Review: Chris Bangs is actually credited as being the man who coined the term 'acid jazz' and here he shares this new Acid Jazz 7" with Mick Talbot who was of course a founding member of the Style Council. Together they serve up a brace fo brilliantly cheeky but functional jazz cuts to get dance floors in a spin. Review: Soundway presents a 7" featuring two rare tracks from Java, Indonesia, recorded in the late 60s. On one side, Rully Djohan delivers a psychedelic organ version of 'Bubuj Bulan', a classic Indonesian song by Benny Corda. On the other side, Munif sings a raw funk tune in Arabic called 'Naghm El Uns'. It amounts to nothing less than a fascinating glimpse into the diverse musical scene of Java at the time.

Review: As DJ at one of the longest running and most venerable jazz nights around, London's Messin' Around, Adrian Gibson has road-tested more than a fair share of jazzy sensations in his time. Music For Jazz Dancers distills his knowledge and experience into one vital collection of essential cuts, and it's an eye-opening and valuable resource.
Trombonist and bandleader Peter Herbolzheimer's collaboration with Dianne Reeves from 1995, "Cherokee," kicks things off with a big band flair that would undoubtedly tear up the right dance floor. Samba rhythms find a good home here too - with Mario Canonge's "Kon Djab Djigidi" and Marcos Ariel's pacey "Samba Torto" breaking out the congas in particular. In fact, much of what Gibson selects comes at a break-neck speed, which suggests the crowds at Messin' Around must have superhuman stamina. Fernando Gelbard's "Alevacolaries" in particular is blisteringly fast, driven by hand percussion, some screaming vocals and Rhodes. The combination of all these elements is fascinating and a real find. For listeners inclined toward a slightly more conventional mode of jazz though, Primo and the Groupe's "A Child Runs Free" is a perfect fusion of uptempo rhythms with smooth vocalisms and laidback piano accompaniment. Not only is this a great collection of hitherto obscure jazz, the fact that it's presented with dancing in mind makes it all the better!

Review: Minnesota's Shaun LaBelle returns with two collaborative cuts that shimmer with West Coast class. On 'Mon Cher Amour', Maysa's effortlessly fluid delivery rides plush piano chords from Bobby Lyle, whose presence elevates the arrangement with vintage jazz-funk elegance. Lyle's involvement i rare and usually reserved i speaks volumes. Flip to 'Your Love Kept Calling My Name', a slower burn that shows off LaBelle's syrupy synth bass and clean guitar touches, anchored again by Maysa, this time joined by Stokley. The track's groove is thick but graceful, helped along by contributions from Jeff Lorber, Patrick Lamb and Maurizio Metalli. While there's a polish that veers towards the adult contemporary side of soul-jazz, both tunes have the kind of melodic strength and studio richness that make sense of their Billboard and UK Soul Chart success.

Review: 'Beat Me Till I'm Blue' is a wonderfully funky classic by The Mohawks presented under the M Hawk alias, the Hawk in question being none other than KPM Music Library overlord Alan Hawkshaw, who wrote the themes from everything from Grange Hill to Countdown. It was a real cornerstone of the late-1960s library and soul-infused grooves of the sort that diggers still fawn over today, and sample fiends still search out. The track delivers Hawkshaw's distinctively driving Hammond organ riffs, tight drum breaks and irresistible rhythms, all of which have made it a favourite among DJs for decades. Two versions are served up here, one with the iconic horns and one with them stripped away, and both offer plenty of energy. .

Review: Tennessee's legendary jazz pianist, Harold Mabern, is surely one of the kings of the mighty Prestige label, and his material helped bridge the gap between jazz and funk back in the 1970s, alongside the likes of Idris Muhammad, The Jimmy Castor Bunch and all those geniuses. "I Want You Back" is a stone-cold classic and contains one of the most hummable trumpet lines ever, and if you hear closely it's been reworked and sampled by none other than the King of pop when he was only a little one. Funk Inc's sublime "Sister Janie" resides on the flip, a more lo-fi funk bullett for the diggers, and complete with a dusty organ!

Review: Best known to many as Brett Domino from 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and all round internet keytar cover verion fame, Rob J Madin steps out from his comedy roots with a fresh suite of instrumental jazz-funk recorded mostly in his Sheffield attic. Drawing from the energy of artists like BadBadNotGood and Mildlife, the new six-track EP blends silky keys, warped synths, and choppy drum samples into a head-nodding, sun-drenched mod soul anthem set. 'Callisto Disco' veers over brash momenta, while 'Cherryade' leans back towards a laid-back optimism, not to mention the opener 'Bouquet Garni', which prophesies restless singalong hums by the never-forgetting listener.

Review: As the title suggests, this fantastic re-edit EP of jazz-funk and fusion workouts was created in tribute to the UK's most renowned jazz-loving DJ, Gilles Peterson. We could certainly imagine dancers at his legendary Dingwalls sessions of the 1990s dancing enthusiastically to all three cuts. A-side 'Happy' is a fast-tempo slab of guitar solo-laden jazz-fusion positivity full of Latin-tinged percussion, twinkling pianos and spacey synths, while 'Desde El Mar' is a breathless, percussion-rich samba-dance monster blessed with some of the most life-affirming vocal improvisations we've ever heard. Closing cut 'Wings', meanwhile, is a synth-splashed, solo-sporting chunk of obscure jazz-funk whose rhythmic complexity will delight dedicated jazz dancers.

Review: Basic Fingers welcomes The Magic Twins to sprinkle some of their fairy dust over some old time disco music, and they don't hold up on chopping up with aplomb. The source material gets mystified on 'Magic Theme' as recognisable hooks and stabs meld with nimble keys and swirling organ pads until something wholly new emerges from the alchemy. 'It's Bright' has a jazz funk lilt which will bring you sunshine even in the depths of December, and once again the Twins do such a slick job with their edit you can't be sure where the joins are.

It was originally released on seven-inch single in 1964 and contains a quartet of tunes featured on the soundtrack to a French comedy film of the same name. The EP-opening title track is our pick: a jaunty, club-ready, flute-sporting jazz number that sounds a little like Dave Brubeck classic 'Take Five'. The other three compositions are a little cheekier and quirkier, with more obvious roots in cinematic comedy, but no less inspired in their own way.
