A Tribe Called Quest - "Sucka Nigga" (4:03)
Jack Wilkins - "Red Clay" (4:03)
Review: We're big fans of these educational 7"s that often crop up, with a legendary hip hop jam on one side and the source of some its samples appearing on the flip. This time out we get A Tribe Called Quest's deep cut 'Sucka N***a' - which is taken from their legendary Midnight Marauders album - with its buttery rhymes and funky bass buried deep within. Jack Wilkins's 'Red Clay' on the flip isn't that much of a deviation. Though it's slower and free from the rhymes, it is a brilliantly effective and emotive cut. More like this please.

Review: Saxophonist Stuart Bogie and drummer Joe Russo are the founding pair behind the 10-piece The Bogie Band ensemble. The rest of the crew is made up of a bunch of talented musicians who all play with various other notable group such as The Budos Band, Antibalas and St. Vincent. The old friends all come together in blistering fashion with big horn arrangements and powerful drums driving along the tunes with woodwind and brass explosions up top. These tunes bring all new perspectives to wind powered music at the same time as getting you on your toes.

James Brown - "Funky Drummer" (extended Breaks Special edition) (4:49)

Review: This one came our back in January but sold out in quick fashion, so a limited edition repress is now here but likely to be gone just as quick. And it's easy to see why as this latest Breaks & Beats offering takes on edits of two massive James Brown classics. Extended with DJ friendly breaks and elongated grooves, the Godfather of Soul's fine original is made into a much more useable tool. Jimmy Smith classic "Root Down" gets similar treatment on the flip as it starts and ends with some very workable drum loops that will liven up any set and party.

Don (2:10)
Jon (2:30)
Review: Two masters of the free / improvisational jazz form, Don Cherry and Jon Appleton, are rare to come by these days. Both artists are highly sought after and difficult to find on the second-hand market, so a reissue of their work - especially together - is the perfect kind of treat for our Thursday morning tasting sessions. This reissue of "Don" comes in 7" format, and its wonky, spaced-out horns and subtle electronics are every bit as strange and daring as they were back in 1970. "Jon", on the flipside, is just as twisted, and possibly even further out there into the ether. Bloody hell...1970! Highly recommended.

Review: New Zealand-born Nathan Haines picked up a fine reputation for his jazz playing skills as early as his teenage years. He has recorded more than a dozen albums since the mid-nineties and for this new one on Na Vitrola Brazil he takes care of a-side 'Thorne Bay Bossa' which is a heavy, piano-led jazz workout with shuffling drums and shakers. On the flip are Alain Eskinasi and Graham Lusty aka Jazz Juice for an even more energetic tune. 'Los Chicos' is built on a succulent samba beat with lead oboe, mad keys and plenty of woody percussion making you shake every bone in your body.

Short Story From Tabla, Drums & Trumpet (2:11)
Oye Maia (3:01)
Review: Thanks to a plethora of pleasing releases from the likes of Nat Birchall and Michael Grossman, 2019 has been a vintage year for Jazzman's "Jazz 45" series. The last volume of the year comes courtesy of Jai Ho, an occasional studio "supergroup" who initially met by accident in the late 1990s. In fact, A-side "Short Story From Tabla, Drums & Trumpet" was recorded in a single day in 1996. The descriptive title is accurate, with squally, effects-laden trumpet solos riding a killer backing track of military style drum breaks, exotic tabla motifs and toasty double bass. The group met again for another studio day in 2003 and recorded B-side "Oye Maia", a wonderfully lucid and languid mixture of attractive Kalimba melodies, drifting trumpet and shuffling Indian instrumentation.

Groovin' You (6:31)
Review: Believe it or not, but the infamous BBE label, who started unleashing their barrage of musical waves all the way back in the mid 2000s are still run out of Hastings, an unlikely and yet bizarrely fitting location for a record imprint. Through the years, they've been responsible for releasing copious house albums from the likes of DJ Deep, Henrik Schwarz and Dimitri From Paris, among many others, but they've always had a soft spot for all things jazzy. Ricky Reid makes his debut under The James L'Estraunge Orchestra and the results are magnificent. "Closer" is a luvvy-duvvy sort of ballad, backed by Reid's deep lyrics and a euphoric wave of harmonics that sound all too angelic and soulful for a straight-up jazz tune; "Groovin' You" is the more percussive of the two, breaking out the jazz horns, unleashing a subtle glow of Rhodes fluttering, and providing a mighty fine groove.

Miss Your Life (2:44)
Small Thing (3:10)
Review: 'Miss Your Life' is a punky new wave track that was originally penned as a poem before evolving into a song. It critiques British apathy, complacency, and a pervasive sense of powerlessness and pessimism that we can all relate to. The song itself serves as a rallying cry to resist and take action before it's too late. The James Taylor Quartet's guitarist Mark, typically known for his more intricate parts, nails the punky intro with precision and the track captures this outfit's defiant spirit and youthful energy while also blending joy and rebellion as they revisit their adolescent years with a powerful message.

Night Crawler
Review: What a repress! Bob James is, without argument, one of THE most sampled gents in the game. It's so easy to see why... He's one of THE most talented musicians in the jazz game. His deft ability to compose and arrange leaves him in a league of his own. "Westchester Lady" is immediately recognised as the spring board for Adam F's "Circles" and its lush orchestral crescendo and sudden switch in phrase and key. Having been plundered by the likes of Supernatural, Demigodz, Guru and many more, "Night Crawler" is equally as distinguished. A jazz boogie anthem for the heads, if you've not got this in your collection now is your chance!

Review: Etta's career-defining debut album At Last showed the world what she was capable of. Unfettered breadth spaced over three 45s, delivered by Chess off-shoot Argo, each track explored a different style from blues to jazz to doo-wop to smoking soul. Complete with her two most legendary songs ("At Last" and "I Just Want To Make Love To You") the real beauty is in the less-celebrated numbers such as the carnal sensuous "Seven Day Fool", the chop-slapping gospel power of "Hold On Me" and the sleazy guitar lines and time signature switches of "Spoonful". A serious piece of soul history.

Water No Get Enemy (DJ Jin Respect-To-The-Man edit) (4:02)
Review: Jaribu Afrobeat Arkestra have long been one of Japan's foremost purveyors of Fela Kuti-style goodness, though in the past they've shied away from covering the great man's works. With this must-check "45", the group has finally relented and delivered their interpretation of 'Water Get No Enemy', one of Kuti and Africa '70's best-loved tunes. Their interpretation, which was made in cahoots with DJ Ryuhei The Man, is simultaneously deliciously heavy - all low-register horns and Tony Allen style polyrhythmic drums - and surprisingly light and airy, with a sun-kissed vibe that draws the track towards Japanese spiritual jazz territory. Cro-Magnon collaborator DJ Jin delivers a flipside re-edit the emphasises all the good stuff while utilising a slightly more dancefloor-friendly arrangement.

Japanese label Soul Garden have become a natural home for their sound since 2009 debut LP Afro Sound System, and they're back on Soul Garden once again with their latest single, a cover of Aretha Franklin's universally adored funk pinnacle, 'Rock Steady'. As well as the band's effervescent original version on the A side, on the flip we get an edit of the track by MACKA-CHIN with just a few tweaks here and there for the DJs.

Vision Of Phase (12" mix)
Review: Living up to their name in every way, these Japanese showstoppers were picked up by Keb Darge and have lived up to the hype ever since. Here we have their new single from their latest eponymous album, and it's quite the attraction. "Halyards" has been given the Midas touch by homeland heroes Kyoto Jazz Massive. The end result is a cute Q&A discourse relayed in minor key with sudden switches in time signature and a mournful middle eighth. "Relative" comes with a more Mancini style score flavour and "Jazz Collective" acts as a perky, classic ballroom theme tune for the band. The biggest attraction here, though, is their 12" version of "Vision Of Phase" which is heavy enough to sing to fans of Detroit techno as well as jazz.

Review: Bristol's soul jazz kings The Jazz Defenders land on the Haggis label here with a new jazz rap-cum-hip-hop single featuring Doc Brown. It is a melange of all things great about jazz, funk and instrumental hip hop with some of a big swing feel. The arrangement is fulsome on 'Rolling On A High' with woodblock hits, big horns, warm chords and free flowing bars. Things get more deep and reflective on the B-side tune 'Looking Back' which is slower, more vulnerable, more seductive.

Review: Here's another essential selection of reworks from London's Jazz N Palms crew, a collective of dusty-fingered diggers and good groove enthusiasts best known for the (pre-pandemic) residency at Ronnie Scott's. They hit the ground running with 'Luz Del Sol', a tidy revision of a gorgeously sunny, vibraphone-sporting chunk or orchestrated smoothness, before going all Balearic on the similarly summery 'Cold Drink' (think Pat Metheny style jazz-fusion, and you're close). Over on the flip, 'I Won't Be Long' is a fantastic extension of a previously oh-too-short, disco era jazz-funk gem, while 'Fenix' is a deeper, more spiritual jazz excursion that boasts a soft-touch groove and some spellbinding woodwind solos.

Review: Jazz N Palms turn out another of their standout re-edit EPs here and the sixth in the series is no less special than the previous five. As ever, the MO is that the London collective offers tidy revisions of all a wide range of jazz and jazz-funk obscurities. This one kicks off with a Bob James style jam full of instrumental funk and then goes on to the glossy samba rhythms and woodblock hits of 'Santa Ana.' There are more languorous sounds on the stretched out solos of 'El Sabe' then the pace picks up for the energetic shuffles of 'El Sabe.' There's a reflective, season-shifting mood to 'This Thing Of Ours' which feels perfectly suited to the time of year, whether it's David Giordano's wistful guitar chops or Josh Glazer and Shawn Rhoades' brass section pealing out over the laconic rhythm. The lead single from that record now gets its own pressing treatment on hi son label and comes with two alternate versions. Joyce - "Aldeia De Ogum" (4:30)
Rosinha Da Valencia - "Summertime" (2:59)
Review: Joyce Moreno, a legendary Rio-born artist, is celebrated for her exceptional voice, musicianship, and songwriting. With over 30 albums in a career spanning more than 50 years, she continues to enchant audiences worldwide. Her iconic track 'Aldeia de Ogum,' known for its vibrant jazzy arrangement and rich samba rhythms, became a staple in London's Acid Jazz scene, championed by DJs Patrick Forge and Gilles Peterson. Originally featured on her 1980 LP Feminina and our 1997 Essential Joyce compilation, this beloved song first appeared on 7" through the Brazil 45 series. Rosinha de Valenca, another Rio native, was a revered composer, arranger, and guitarist who collaborated with giants like Baden Powell and Sergio Mendes. Her instrumental rendition of Gershwin's 'Summertime,' from her 1975 LP Um Violao Em Primeiro Plano, shows off her exquisite guitar skills accompanied by lush strings, delivering an emotionally stirring performance. A lot of great history on one 7".

Joyce - "Aldeia De Ogum"
Rosinha Da Valencia - "Summertime"
Review: One of the many musical golden moments Joyce has given us during her 20 album/40 year career, "Aldeia de Ogum" is a full-bodied samba smash that enjoyed a renaissance during London's acid jazz era in the late 80s. Meanwhile on the flip Roshina lays down an incredible version of Fitzgerald's "Summertime". Spider like nylon string finger business, softly backed by emotion-drenched strings, it's one of the best cover versions Mr Bongo have ever given us.

Review: Colin Curtis Presents is dropping some real heat this month with a pair of fine fusion EPs including one from GeeW and now this one from JuJu. This is another excellent transmission from the forefront of the contemporary British nu-jazz scene by Roderick Stewart. 'Black Samba' is one of those nimble and ass-wiggling rhythms the is punctuated by big horns, funky chords, busy percussion and a cool sense of style. 'Musa' (Cumulative Collective rework) keeps the life-affirming Roy Ayers melodies going over more effortlessly funky bass and 'Cla Samba' (feat Josue Ferriera) and 'So Da Manha' bring more Brazilian vibes to this superb EP.

Stick Of A Branch (3:36)
Review: Back in 2017, we aptly described the Jukka Eskola Soul Trio as "the Finnish horn boss's newest project". The combo is now not so new, of course, but the trumpeter and flugelhorn player's outfit remains a go-to source for quality jazz and jazz-funk material. There's more than a little Latin flavour to be found on "Tiny B", a Hammond-powered shuffler rich in South American drum rhythms and the kind of sticky trumpet solos that were once a hallmark of Herb Alpert's records. Flipside "Stick Of A Branch" is a far more up-tempo affair, with Eskola's punchy playing riding fluid vibraphone motifs and floor-rocking jazz drums.

Martha's New Moment (5:01)
Review: Longstanding horn boss Jukka has been cooking up rare gold for over 10 years now in various troupes and forms. The Soul Trio is his latest project, having sparked the fire last year on We Jazz. The fire now heating up with every toot, this Timmion 45" is a jazz funk inferno. "Introducing The Soul Trio" is a snare-rattling, organ-snapping entry tune while the clipped, hooky riff on "Martha's New Movement" is the finishing move. Victory is Jukka's.

Review: KPM Music might just be one of the most expansive music libraries out there, boasting a whopping 30,000 exclusive music tracks for licensing. Some of their earliest pieces are being reissued by Measured Mile, the latest of which appears here in the form of a split 7" by four of the label's most treasured contributors. 'Viva La Tamla Motown' helms up the A-side with wonky, laboured drumming and an excitable rock n' rolly guitar and harmonica. 'Main Chance' brings up the B with a more loungeified flutey strutter.

Lil Kim - "Crush" (Jazz mix) (4:42)
Jeff Lorber - "Raindance" (re-edit) (4:14)
Review: Galaxy Sound give this 1997 hip hop classic a new twist with some slick jazz stylings. Lil Kim's "Crush On You", is known by all but here it becomes something completely different: a forgotten jazz funk gem, colourful trumpet leads awash with lush drums and timeless soul. The flipside houses a re-edit of Jeff Lorber's "Rain Dance", which is in fact the original source of the samples on Lil Kim's track, and one that has been used on more than 20 other big time tunes. Here it's subtly tweaked but still remains a classic bit of jazz-flecked hip hop with some proper rude vocals.

Funk Yourself
Repartamos El Funky
Review: Mukatsuku struck gold again on this latest first time on a "45" issue. It boasts a couple of lesser-known jazz-funk fusion jams which originally featured on Argentine musician Jorge Navarro's 1977 album "Navarro Con Polenta", an LP that has never been issued outside of South America. A-side "Funk Yourself" is a bustling, high-octane jazz-funk Hammond licks and spiralling horns jumping above a Blaxploitation style backing track. "Repartamos El Funky" is a more laid back but no less musically intricate affair, with a variety of high-grade electric piano and guitar solos riding seemingly endless jazz style drum solos and rubbery bass. Juno hand-numbered copies come in exclusive sleeves and this 45 not be repressed. DJ Support comes from Ge-ology, Dom Servini, DJ Koco (Japan), DJ Food,The Allergies,45LIVE.net ,Dr Bob Jones,Rob Luis, Smoov and more

Review: Re-press alert! It's the tune that simply won't quit... Gregory Porter's incredible groove-workout "1960 What?" came to fame earlier this year thanks to Opolopo's Kick & Bass rerub. But if you're looking for something more organic and less electronic then Gerardo Frisina's Cuban Soul mix is the perfect solution. Jazz addicts should head directly to the B-side as Room56 and Japanese headliners Jazz Collective both lay down some beautiful grooves. Loaded with latent spring and sizzling instrumentation, this release really is rather special.

Bobby Shad & The Bad Men - "I Want You Back" (edit) (3:57)
Johnny Coles - "Never Can Say Goodbye" (3:03)
Review: For fans of heavy funk, this double-header from Japanese label Mainstream's Kickin' seven-inch series should be essential listening. Of the two tracks, the real killer is Bobby Shad & The Bad Men's insanely energetic, 1973 free-funk cover of 'I Want You Back' - an insatiable and life-affirming instrumental revision full of booming proto-disco horn arrangements, loose-limbed drum-breaks and sweaty solos aplenty. Over on the flip you'll find a more considered gem: trumpeter Johnny Coles' laidback, emotion-rich 1972 rendition of Clifton David composition 'Never Can Say Goodbye'. While technically a jazz-funk number, it's more on the jazz end of the spectrum, with Coles' impeccable trumpet solos catching the ear throughout.

9th Wonder (Digable Planets) (3:28)
Crown Ones (People Under The Stairs) (3:54)
Review: This 7" release sees Amsterdam-based Soul Supreme and NYC drummer Jay Mumford continue their collaborative exploration of hip-hop and funk classics. The duo, known for their captivating Instagram covers, deliver fully realised reimaginings of two iconic tracks. On the A-side, Digable Planets' '9th Wonder' gets a modern update, with Jay's thunderous drumming and Soul Supreme's funky clavinet work transforming the original into a vibrant jazz-funk odyssey. The addition of cascading horns and a New Orleans funk break further elevate the track, showcasing the duo's impressive musicianship and arrangement skills. The flipside takes on People Under the Stairs' 'Crown Ones', transforming the hip-hop classic into a heavy funk anthem. Soul Supreme's catchy Rhodes lines and soaring solos are complemented by Jay's driving groove and a powerful horn section, resulting in a slice of uncut jazz-funk that's both raw and sophisticated. A great illustration of the duo's ability to breathe new life into classic tracks, creating something fresh and exciting while paying homage to the past.

Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45s series gets its rock on with two hairy grooves, both of which have enjoyed the sampler's crafty knives over the years. First up, Tom Ze's "Jimmy Renda-se" rolls with an oily sleazy groove that's peppered by a playful lyrical rhythm that transcends language barriers. Ben's "Take It Easy My Brother Charlie" joins the dots between Samba and very light Rock with all the signatures that made Mr Ben the legend he remains to this day with big vocal harmonies and infectious textures of Brazilian percussion.

Review: Mushroom Pillow have tapped up the maverick Jacques Renault here and asked him to tap into a whole new world of influence away from his colourful house fair. It is the rich heritage of Latin underground sounds he leans on most as he threads together his own edits of classics from that world into two steamy new jams. His vibrant rhythms come peppered with mystic flutes and Latin vocals, psyched-out guitars and soulful melodies that make for truly captivating listening. The originals were chosen for their historical significance and cultural impact and have been sympathetically touched up here.
