Review: It's always worth checking the reissues offered up by Jazz Room Records, not least because there are few people more knowledgeable on the dancefloor friendly end of jazz than boss man Paul Murphy. Predictably, he's scored another coup here by securing the rights to reissue Jazzberry Patch's 1977 debut - a private-press jazz-funk gem that's long been a "holy grail" amongst collectors. Joined by virtuoso organist Mike Longo (who supplies liner notes) and a handful of guest percussionists, the Californian trio lay down a series of effortlessly funky, percussive and solo-rich workouts that should delight jazz-funk fans everywhere. The piece de resistance is undoubtedly the epic title track, which grooves, bobs and weaves over 20 mesmerising minutes.

Review: Enja Records was founded in Munich in the early 70s by jazz devotees Matthias Winckelmann and Horst Weber. Given a co-sign by the always on-point BBE and IF Music founder Jean-Claude, the label is now enjoying a retrospective compilation which seeks to celebrate the best of their golden years. Featuring performances by John Stubblefield, Bobby Hutcherson, Harold Land, Don Cherry, Cecil McBee and Pharoah Sanders collaborator Marvin Hannibal Peterson to name but a few, this collection provides a great jumping-off point for Enja's rich and diverse back catalogue. It may only be an introduction to a vast pool of music, but it's curated with authority by a dedicated head, so you know you're getting a shortcut to the best the label has to offer.

Review: East London record label and shop BBE assign their curators' arm over at If Music another reccy in Latin and Afro-infused "deep jazz", yielding this brilliant fourth edition in a series. Made up solely of material formerly licensed to, but not necessarily released by, If Music, this one represents a global diversity of Afrobeat and jazz artists: from the creeping, hair-raising panter 'N'Kon Kini N'Kon N'Kon' by none other than stowaway Cream drummer Ginger Baker (cut from the album Eleven Sides Of Baker, on which there is an impressively mammoth cast of contributors) in collaboration with Ransome Kuti, through to the Japanese drummer George Hirota ('Process Of Cloud') and Kan Digor ('Croonardise').

Review: Symbole has secured the rights to the first-ever release of Patrick Jean-Marie's seminal Atika - LIVE! This rare recording - which has been made from the original master tape - was captured in mono during a 1982 TV live show on RFO in Guadeloupe. The fragile tape's survival is a real miracle. Recorded in non-studio conditions, the spontaneous and improvised sequences create an atmosphere that shows up the subtle dialogues between the musicians. The Jean-Marie brothers shine at their best here as they effortlessly cross musical dimensions. Raw but intimate, this is a special piece of musical history.

Review: Jimmy Giuffre was an American jazz clarinetist and saxophonist who helped propose ideas in jazz around free improvisation that led to some remarkably fluid, spirited works as his career matured in the 50s and 60s. 50 years on from its initial release, Music For People, Birds, Butterflies & Mosquitoes sounds like a landmark vision. It might be framed as free jazz, but it retains a harmonious, soulful quality which is more readily aligned with Sun Ra, or even as grounded as Yusef Lateef and Pharaoh Sanders. Joined by Randy Kaye on percussion and Kiyoshi Tokunaga on bass, the sharply focused trio found a veritable menagerie of expression that sounds just as vital in the modern day.

Review: The newly issued and remastered Movement by The Joe Harriott Quintet revisits one of the most innovative jazz albums of the 1960s. Originally released in 1963, it's a stunning work that showcases Harriott's pioneering work in "free form" jazz as he blends Caribbean influences with avant-garde improvisation. Harriott, alongside his stellar quintet which includes trumpeter Shake Keane and pianist Pat Smythe explores experimental yet accessible compositions to create an engaging balance between structured melodies and freeform expression. This edition enhances the album's clarity and offers a fresh chance to take in its bold, genre-defying sounds, which means it remains a must-listen for jazz aficionados jay also reaffirms Harriott's legacy as a British jazz innovator.

Review: Released in 1974, during Strata East's golden era, Florida free drummer John formed his first pop-up troupe to record this one-off document. At points overwhelmingly funky (the seashore laps and waves of the sun-kissed "Ode To An Untitled Lady"), at others frenetic, chaotic and challenging (the time signature switches and spiralling horns on "Ra"), at others softly cinematic and dreamy (the abstract floatation sermon of the title track) Earth Blossom creates and exists in its own cosmos. As such, it is timeless and will remain contemporary sounding for many decades to come.

Verve are focusing on Coltrane's live albums in particular; 'Crescent' almost certainly tops 'Live At The Village Vanguard', again featuring the unparalleled performative chops of Trane's fellow jazz peers McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones - his Classic Quartet. Review: A beautifully made package that presents Coltrane and his ensemble exploring a softer, more introspective side of jazz. The quartet, featuring McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums, delivers a captivating performance characterised by sublime improvisation and profound musical expression. Across the album's tracks, including classics like 'Say It (Over and Over Again)' and 'It's Easy to Remember,' Coltrane's saxophone weaves intricate melodies with a soul-stirring resonance, Tyner's piano work adds rich harmonies and delicate textures, while Garrison and Jones provide a solid rhythmic foundation that anchors each composition. Ballads shows Coltrane's ability to convey a wide range of emotions through his music, from tender vulnerability to profound introspection. The quartet's impeccable musicianship and intuitive interplay make this album a timeless treasure in the world of jazz..

Review: First released in 1970 and now reissued in conjunction with Light In The Attic and Future Days, Pete Jolly's Seasons first manifested on A&M Records as a series of live-composed melodies and textures, recalling the naturalisms of each passing season through their expression in jazz and funk. Starting naturally in spring before segueing into a verdant nature-scape, then briskly launching into a sandstorm, not long followed by an 'Autumn Festival' and an 'Indian Summer', the order of each season in Jolly's remit is not the same as their occurrence in reality; yet this is precisely what makes this early ambient, cool jazz opus so arresting; it's as though it came from another world.

Review: Pete Jolly's Seasons, first released in 1970, is an early example of, one could say,'"environmental' cool jazz and ambient music. Seasons never saw a significant commercial release, though they say that if one successfully articulates the spirit of the time, one is rewarded with fame regardless: the ensuing cult following in the years after felt almost inevitable, and now that its flames are being fanned again, we can say with surety that the West Coast jazz pianist and accordionist's efforts will continue to be rewarded once more. Cycling through each season in a jumbled order, yet revelling in every possible sensory twist and turn characteristic of each season, we're met with an album that not only straddles the jazz and pop worlds in unprecedented ways, but also serves a premonitory rendition of hip-hop; the album is a favourite sample source of such greats as Cypress Hill, Jay Dee and Busta Rhymes.

Review: Harking yet another Tone Poet 2024 edition to come, comes this new forthcoming reissue from the esteemed master drummer Elvin Jones: Poly-Currents. After his six years with the seminal John Coltrane Quartet, Jones signed with Blue Note in 1968 and began building his own career as a bandleader. His first two albums for the label were spare trio outings - Puttin' It Together and The Ultimate - both featuring saxophonist Joe Farrell and bassist Jimmy Garrison. For 1969's unfettered post-bop exploration Poly-Currents, Jones expanded his ensemble with additional woodwinds and percussion while still maintaining spacious realms for the musicians to delve into on modal band member originals including 'Agenda,' 'Agappe Love,' 'Mr. Jones,' and 'Whew'. Jones is joined throughout by a cast that includes Farrell on tenor saxophone, English horn and flutes, George Coleman on tenor saxophone, Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone, Fred Tompkins on flute, Wilbur Little on bass and Cuban conguero Candido Camero.

Review: Verve By Request repress Elvin Jones and Richard Davis' Heavy Sounds, one of the few recorded collaborations between the drummer and bassist ever laid to disc. The title is debatable if not misleading, as we'd wager that most listeners would typify this record as decidedly 'light' in feel. Recorded for Impulse in 1967, a session originally intended to be a trio date morphed into an 11 1/2-minute duet, on the album Summertime, between drummer Jones and bassist Davis, after the guitarist did not appear. The following day, saxophonist Frank Foster and pianist Billy Greene joined in to round out the rest of the cuts including 'Elvin's Guitar Blues', which features Jones' only recorded guitar performance.

It highlights an unparalleled level of musical craftsmanship where the arrangements are lush and use orchestral instruments, funky rhythms and smooth vocals to create a timeless sound. Standout tracks like 'What's Going On?' and 'Theme From The Anderson Tapes' showcase Jones' ability to merge complex jazz harmonies with commercial appeal. He also balances upbeat tracks with introspective, slower tunes with the result reflecting Quincy's deep influence on the music of the last half-century.

On this record, Articulation, Jones is joined by an impressive lineup including Wallace Roney III on trumpet, Arthur Blythe on alto sax, Bob Mintzer on tenor sax and others besides. The track 'Hard New York Swing' features additional musicians Benjamin Brown on drums and Bruce Johnson on bass while Wim van Eyle's liner notes complement the album and offer more insight into this vibrant jazz project.

Review: Thad Jones' The Magnificent Thad Jones is a stunning album that beautifully showcases the beauty of hard bop. Released in 1956, it reflects the era's evolving jazz landscape, influenced by modern jazz pioneers like Horace Silver and Miles Davis. The album's tracks, including original compositions like 'Billy-Boo' and 'Thedia,' exude a relaxed yet lively vibe, typical of hard bop. Jones' trumpet work shines throughout, displaying a remarkable blend of relaxation and intensity in his solos. The ensemble's chemistry, especially between Detroit-raised musicians like pianist Barry Harris and Jones, is palpable, supported by the solid foundation laid by Percy Heath and Max Roach. Rudy Van Gelder's recording in Hackensack, New Jersey, harnasses the warmth and depth of Jones' trumpet sound, adding to the album's allure. The Magnificent Thad Jones is a timeless gem that continues to enchant jazz enthusiasts with its impeccable execution and rich musicality.

Review: Oona Toivanen Trio returns to We Jazz Records with their new album Gravity and in doing so they mark a milestone. It's a record that offers up their evolving sound and one that goes beyond the traditional piano trio format. The music exudes a remarkable sense of telepathy and intimacy which is evident from the first moments of Gravity. Formed in 2000, the trio's bond extends beyond music, with Joona, Olavi, and Tapani's friendship dating back to childhood in Jyvaskyla, Finland so their deep connection has been built over years of playing together. Happily, that is reflected in the synergy on show here.

Review: Cliff Craft is a standout gem in Blue Note's 1500 series and one of the rarest treasures. This superb album features Clifford Jordan on tenor sax, alongside Art Farmer (trumpet), Sonny Clark (piano), George Tucker (bass), and Louis Hayes (drums). It's a smooth, soulful journey that captivates from the first note. The album opens with Jordan's composition 'Laconia,' setting the tone with a relaxing, immersive sound. Jordan's craftsmanship shines throughout, especially on 'Soul-Lo Blues,' a bluesy, enjoyable tune that highlights his exceptional talent. The title track, Cliff Craft, is a fast-tempo, hard-bop piece that showcases Jordan's rich tenor sound and the superb rhythm section. Side-2 kicks off with 'Confirmation,' a medium-tempo Bird tune that features laid-back solos from Jordan and Farmer. Clark's smooth, flowing solo adds to the track's charm. 'Sophisticated Lady,' a beautiful ballad by Duke Ellington, stands out as a favorite slow tune. The album concludes with the driving energy of Parker and Gillespie's 'Anthropology,' leaving you wanting more. Cliff Craft is one of the finest Blue Note records ever made.

However, here she makes her Verve debut and showcases a voice that evokes great legends of the genre like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Her phrasing, tone and vocal control place her among these icons despite her youth and Samara's voice, already rich with timeless elegance, carries the weight of jazz's history while still feeling remarkably fresh and exciting. With this remarkable debut, she is surely poised to become a defining figure in jazz music.

Review: Passarinho Urbano (Urban Bird) is the album-length result of a chance encounter between singer and musician Joyce Moreno and producer Sergio Bardotti in Rome, Italy. Thoroughly relaxed and recharged after a long break in the city, Moreno's rejuvenated state of mind lent immediately to a spur-of-the-moment reimagining of some of her favourite classical Brazilian MPB and bossa nova standards, some of whose original composers were leading lights of the underground cultural resistance during the country's military dictatorship by the Brazilian Army during the 1960s. With a soft-spoken, intimate vocal intonation by Moreno, and a composition centring on slow-building, rhythmically deft call-and-response cantos, this album deserves its longstanding status as a secret masterpiece, a status which'll surely be renewed once more by this first-time-worldwide reissue by Week-End Records.

Colours Of My Dream
The Eleven Eight Song
Review: Behind the unassuming monotone cover of Colours, Judy Bailey's 1976 electric soul-jazz masterpiece, lies a richly textured, spirited recording that defies its minimalist presentation. A central figure in Australian jazz for over 70 years, pianist and composer Bailey captured the shifting jazz landscape of mid-70s Australia with Colours, a pivotal album in the country's transition from semi-acoustic jazz to electric jazz-funk. Often compared to the smooth production of Creed Taylor's CTI label, Colours features crisp drums, processed bass, and soul-jazz arrangements akin to those heard on Bob James and Joe Farrell albums, while also incorporating influences from the sensual vocals of Flora Purim and the lively flute work of Hubert Laws. Bailey's fusion of these elements with her own signature style creates a warm, sophisticated atmosphere. Tracks like the funky 'Fall Down Dead', the Latin-tinged 'Toledo', the vibrant 'Colours of My Dream' and the expansive 'The Eleven Eight Song' showcase her ability to blend genres seamlessly. With contributions from saxophonist and flutist Ken James, the album's grooves are both refined and raw, adding to its timeless appeal. Now reissued by The Roundtable, this seminal Australian jazz recording is available on vinyl in a replica gatefold sleeve, allowing new listeners to experience its vibrant energy firsthand.

Possibly the most vibrant jazz record to emerge from Australia, it shows Bailey has a dynamic piano style and why she has long been a key figure in Sydney's studio scene. In later years, she gained recognition as a composer, contributing to film scores, children's music and education. This newly remastered reissue brings her unique sound to a new generation who will likely fall for her impeccable rhythm and jazz flurries once more.

Review: Strut's latest release is a freshly remastered edition of Juju's influential 1974 album Chapter Two: Nia which is bound to excite those looking for a nice copy of this unique record. This reissue shines a spotlight on Juju's unique fusion of Afrocentric jazz and black nationalist poetry, recorded during a transformative period for the band. Founded in San Francisco and relocated to New York in 1972, Jujuiled by James "Plunky" Branchiimmersed themselves in the avant-garde scene, performing at notable venues like Slugs and Ornette Coleman's loft. By 1974, the band had moved to Richmond, Virginia, seeking a creative refuge from New York's high living costs. They settled into what they called the Juju Raga Artist House, a cultural hub that also functioned as the state's first black arts gallery and performance space. Chapter Two: Nia, recorded at Eastern Recording Studios, reflects Juju's commitment to Afrocentric themes and includes a freeform rendition of Pharoah Sanders' 'Black Unity.' The reissue retains the original artwork, adapted from a concert video by Collis Davis, and has been remastered by The Carvery for enhanced sound quality. It also features new liner notes from Plunky Branch, offering deeper insights into the band's revolutionary impact and creative journey.

Review: If you're not familiar with the 1973 American-Philippine action movie Savage! then join the club. Distributed through Roger Corman's New World Pictures, the Cirio H. Santiago production was one of around 40 that the Hollywood legend worked on at far lower costs in the Asian island nation compared with back in the US. A somewhat exploitative business model taking advantage of lower wages in a developing country, the story also used more than a few totems of the Blaxploitation canon to tell the tale of a criminal who winds up getting caught up in a revolution to overthrow a military government. Heavy stuff dealt with in a pulp fiction style, the score reflects this - funk filled guitar licks, slap bass and woodwind hooks. Hip hop selectors take note, then, there's plenty to play with here.

Deft rhythms, and loosely-laid-down layers of guitar and horn, ride over each other like harmonious, health-giving backings for life across this short statement of nine tracks. Now reissued via Strut, we're reminded of its spiritual mood of tricky electronics and wahhing ambiences, as it slowly expands outwards into a holistic psychedelia, more than the some of its easily discernible parts.

It was thought to be a lost recording until it recently showed up and now gets fully revived by Strut. There are strong political links between these countries which no doubt adds weight to this musical link up. Review: Jazz and punk's best legacies fuse together with this latest collaborative release between The Messthetics and James Brandon. Brandon is a jazz saxophonist and contemporary virtuoso from New York; meanwhile, the Messthetics consist of former Fugazi members - bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty with guitarist Anthony Pirog. Continuing the latter's pegging as a 'jazz punk jam', the focus here is on Brandon's novel sax playing, lent to the Messthetics' cathartic, ultimate punk-riffing focus. All is instrumental, as signalled on the lead single 'Emergence', which finds pure enjoyment in variation around a singular four-by-four bass loop. In the saxophonist's own words: "The Messthetics are friends at this point and collaborating with them over the years has now brought us to another high point of musical bonding and purely unapologetic energy!"

On his return to the label, Three of Us Are From Houston and Reuben is Not, Smith pays tribute to the Texan city of his birth in the company of Jason Moran (piano), Eric Harland (drums) and Reuben Smith (bass). It's a pleasingly breezy, positive and expertly crafted affair, with the quartet running through a series of ear-catching Smith compositions and a radical (and rather good) interpretation of an old Sam Rivers number. A wholehearted tribute to the rarely discussed cultural richness and diversity of Smith's home city.

Review: Daniel Sommer's Sounds & Sequences, the second entry in his Nordic Trilogy, ventures deeper into the nuances of Nordic improvisation. Featuring Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen and Swedish bassist Johannes Lundberg, the album takes an adventurous approach, blending chamber music, spiritual jazz and ambient influences. Recorded at Gothenburg's Studio Epidemin, the trio navigated the sessions without set guidelines, letting intuitive improvisation guide each track. The album's atmosphere is distinctly expansive and haunting. In 'Vejen Til Epidemic', Henriksen's ethereal trumpet melodies float over Lundberg's deep bass and Sommer's textured cymbal accents, creating a tone both ominous and inviting. 'Hey, Superhero' adds a more aggressive edge, as Henriksen's airy trumpet soars against grounding basslines and Sommer's more assertive stick work. 'On Blue - Seven', subtle electronic touches and reverberant trumpet evoke a foghorn's call in a shadowy soundscape, while Beautiful Daisy brings in Henriksen's otherworldly falsetto, crafting an eerie, ritualistic feel. The title track's primal drumming and electronic effects add a rock-infused urgency, with Henriksen's falsetto peaking in a raw crescendo. Sounds & Sequences boldly explores Nordic soundscapes, blending electronic and acoustic realms in a stirring album.

Review: The pairing we didn't know we needed - Rod Stewart and Jools Holland - share their latest full-length album Swing Fever, a worthy throwback to the swing music of yore. A 13-track sparkling salute to the timeless songs of the big band years, and reignited by two giants of their craft, this unlikely dialogue between such titans has produced a convincingly diegetic and immersive work, avoiding any overt pratfall of pure anachronism by producing a roomy, spacious and overall future-present work of art, one which confidently reignites the feeling of Charlestonning and jitterbugging in school proms and/or formal bally occasions, until such quaint aerialisms can be performed no more, whether due to nostalgic satiation or mere exhaustion. With peerless dexterity, Stewart and Holland deliver their takes on timeless jazz classics like 'Ain't Misbehavin', 'Frankie And Johnny', 'Sentimental Journey' and 'Lullaby Of Broadway'.

Review: Forces of Nature: Live at Slugs' is a thrilling, never-before-released live recording of jazz giants McCoy Tyner and Joe Henderson, captured at Slugs' Saloon in 1966. Joining them are bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Jack DeJohnette, forming a powerhouse quartet. The performance, unearthed from DeJohnette's personal archives after nearly six decades, showcases the intense musical chemistry between Tyner and Henderson, who were central figures in the 1960s jazz scene. The recording, originally engineered by Orville O'Brien, brings the energy and creativity of this 1966 set to life. With expert mastering by Matthew Lutthans, the sound is crisp and vibrant, transporting listeners back to the legendary Slugs' Saloon. Forces of Nature is a amazing look into an era of jazz brilliance.
