Life's Too Short (3:47)
Blame Game (3:48)
Review: New funk and soul grooves from Adesha and Vincent Kwok, the Italian vocalist and production duo responsible for a rain-made string of releases on Sleepers Records. 'Life's Too Short' and 'Blame Game' are infectious, talkboxing punchers; the former hears a muted guitar solo in its sultry breakdown, as if to say "don't be afraid of anything that stands in your way", while 'Blame Game' continues to deal with the tumult of difficult relationships, aiming to mood-set your next party with frank DX7 chords and 909s. This split single comes to a limited pink vinyl 7" and picture cover, and is limited to just 150 copies.

Girl Fun (3:39)
Review: Adesha and Vincent Kwok come together once more for a new transmission that takes its stylistic cues from "the glittering dance floors of the disco era to Minneapolis-inspired funk." These are lush tunes with gorgeous backing vocals, fine sax sounds and irresistible drums. First is 'Hot Mess' which is a classic disco workout with pumping drums and nice loos percussion under the soaring vocals and cosmic synth rays. 'Girl Fan' has a sizzling sax solo and describes the stages of fandom over punchy beats. This is the third collab from this pair on The Sleepers Record label.

Candy & The Kisses - "Are You Trying To Get Rid Of Me Baby" (2:39)
Val Simpson - "Mr Creator" (2:11)
Review: Candy & The Kisses burst onto the Northern Soul scene with their first single and all-time classic "The 81" co-written and produced by the late Jerry Ross. "Are You Trying To Get Rid Of Me Baby" is a storming soul number that went under the radar for the most part, but is good as any of other hits of theirs like "Chains Of Love" and many others. Flipside "Mr Creator" co-written by Valerie Simpson of Ashford & Simpson was taken up by The Apollas in 1967 on Warner Bros. and went on to become an all-time classic.

The Long Island Sound - "Hey There" (4:23)
Vito & The Salutations - "Hey There" (2:49)
Review: In 1961, producer David Rick discovered Vito and The Salutations, a Brooklyn harmony group of Italian, Irish and Jewish teenagers. Their energetic doo-wop take on 'Unchained Melody' became a hit until the British Invasion shifted the music scene. 'Hey There' remained unreleased until Rick's 1981 double album which compiled their singles and rare collector cuts after years of misrepresentation and a court battle with a copycat group. In 2020, Monster Mike unearthed The Long Island Sound's unreleased 1969 demo of 'Hey There' which was recorded before the band dissolved. Now, Oracion Records drops this forgotten gem on 45.

Whatcha Gonna Do
Review: Originally released in October 2013, there's a particularly awesome story behind this special soul slice from Minneapolis act The Valdons. While their live operations made them city legends, they only ever released one 45". Secret Stash managed to bring the band back together, complete with a slew of recording sessions where a range of demos and ideas were brought to life by their in-house band. This is the first of many new slices you can expect from the band. An upbeat Four Tops-style falsetto / harmony fusion ("Stop Wait A Minute") and a deep and spacious, heart-tugging ballad ("Whatcha Gonna Do") So popular it's been repressed, jump on this now.

Home Is Where The Hatred Is (edit) (3:47)
Review: A year after dropping his acclaimed album 'Billy Valentine And The Universal Truth' with Flying Dutchman and Acid Jazz Records, Billy unveils a fresh take on a soul classic. Recorded at LA's prestigious Henson Recording Studio, alongside producer Bob Thiele Jr. and a stellar band including Larry Goldings, Pino Paladino, Jeff Parker, James Gadson, and John Philip Shenale, he introduces three new tracks. His rendition of Gil Scott-Heron's 'Lady Day & John Coltrane', debuted on Gilles Peterson's BBC6Music, mesmerising live audiences. This special edition 7" includes a unique edit of 'Home Is Where The Hatred Is', not previously available on vinyl.

I've Got A Girl (2:14)
Review: The Valentinos had plenty of early success but still, their story is often seen as one of missed opportunities. The group was led by Friendly Womack Sr. who taught his sons gospel songs before they pursued secular music and that rather led to a struggle between serving up gospel and secular sounds. History tells us the friendly "June" Womack recalled their desire for another hit like 'Looking For A Love' which had been a significant seller in their early days. Two tracks from that era had remained unreleased until now when Soul4Real Records pressed them up here and both are seriously good soul swingers.

Goodbye Song (4:24)
You A Little Smile (From You) (3:19)
Review: Soul Brother continue their mission to reissue the rarer side of classic soul, this time focusing their efforts on Vaneeese and Carolyn, a sister-singer duo who've been active since the 70s. Somewhere between soul and gospel, their wistful 1978 single Goodbye Song is nothing less than a tearjerker, with its opening strings seguing into a 'get-on-with-it' beat. Its stridently strutting backbeat and bass is surely the sonic equivalent of making one's peace with moving on. The B-sider 'Just A Little Smile From You' hears the pair find a new hope, urging the listener to share a smile against a backing of boxy drums and a very early example of synth chords in a gospel song.

Bobby's Grapevine (Aldo Vanucci re-edit) (3:43)
Billy's Missus (Del Gazeebo re-edit) (4:17)
Review: Wah Dubplate cannot and will not be stopped. The incorrigible little bootleg unit marches on with its usual mishmash of funky, disco-friendly edits from the most improbable of producers out there and this latest outing is another minor success in what is a whole catalogue of hidden gems. Italy's Aldo Vanucci and Del Gazeebo turn up sounding wild and soulful; the farmer's opening edit of "Bobby's Grapevine" does the Mo-Town tricks, while the latter's re-visioning of "Billy's Missus" gives the original 'hey, Mrs.Robison!' a nice little dance makeover. Sweet as a nut.

Be My Wife (3:44)
Review: Togolese Afro-funk band Vaudou Game has been responsible for some of the most essential music on Hot Casa Music, so the arrival of a new single from them following an extended absence of three years is positive news indeed. A-side 'Bella' is little less than superb: a sparkling slab of Afro-soul in which spacey Moog lines and the band's own distinctive vocals ride a gloriously sunny, percussion-rich groove. They revert to their trademark up-tempo Togolese Afro-funk style on B-side 'Be My Wife', which adds Highlife style guitar motifs and more spacey synth sounds to a stomping, club-ready rhythm. Sun-soaked brilliance: don't sleep!

Talkin (Stereo) (2:53)
Review: The Vee Gees began as 'The African Americans', but their name was later changed to 'The Versatile Gents' aka. The Vee Gees following a spate of creative differences over their original name. 'Talkin' was born from the breaksy sweet soul sound of the early '70s, which touched on the wall of emotive sound that pigeonholed the sound of rare groove. The song is devotional and improvisatory, spiffingly showing off Robert Evans' pitch-perfect dialogue with the thing upstairs.

I'd Like To Know (3:02)
Review: Featuring sister funk paired with a beautiful ballad, this release is a true gem for aficionados of 1960s indie soul music. It comes from The Velvet Vettes via Tramp and is a limited pressing so don't sleep. A-side cut 'Give Me A Little Bit Of Time' is a lively one with plenty of Northern soul energy as well as lung busting vocals and great backing harmonies full of soul. Flip it over and you will find the much more slow and sentimental sounds of 'I'd Like To Know' which is a real heart melting crooner.

Forgive, Live, Repeat (2:41)
Review: Raw Georgian soul from Ruby Velle and her ever ready Soulphonics: two of the most powerful songs from their recent sophomore album State Of All Things enjoy a little slice of 45 justice. Big full flavoured instrumentation, and an even bigger presence from Ruby herself, across the sides Ruby and co flex their full palette; "Broken Women" is so heavy and urgent it naturally carries a powerful and infectious rock feel while "Forgive, Live, Repeat" taps a little more into the early 70s with its extended organ blasts and more lyrical clarity from the provocative bandleader. Pay attention.

Love Less Blind (4:21)
Review: Atlanta troupe Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics treat us to two of the many highlights from their recent sophomore album State Of All Things. Delivered on a limited white 45, both cuts surge with the full spectrum soul they've been developing over the last 12 years. "Call Out My Name", the triumphant Valli-esque album finale is a thumping yet vastly emotional northern soul shakedown while "Love Less Blind" shows the band in a slightly woozier, dreamer state as the band's clam-tight horn section get given the spotlight shine.

Party Hardy (3:25)
Review: Two Velvet Hammer heaters finally get reissued officially here for the first time since 1977, a mere 45 years since their original release, this time on limited edition red vinyl. 'Party Hardy' is a gorgeous disco groover and an essential slice of Chicago history via Soozi Records, whilst the flip, 'Happy', is the ultimate feel-good modern soul classic and about as anthemic as they get. The appeal of this record knows no limits whether you've heard it once or one hundred times. With mint originals being virtually impossible to get your hands on and second-hand copies that do come up clocking in at L250+, this is a no brainer.

Velvet Hammer - "Happy"
PW - "Happy"
Review: The Originals series continues to excel in deep-digging dot-joining department with this cool rewind back to 1977 when Velvet Hammer's "Happy" became a ubiquitous northern soul anthem thanks to its relentless groove, emphatic organ and soul-stirring falsetto vocals. Back to the future for the B-side we hear how celebrity hat wearer Pharrell Williams digested the classic and made it his own. Spanning over 35 years of soul, the Originals concept just keeps on teaching.
