Review: Dark Entries has been at the forefront of the coldwave and synth revival that has slowly taken hold over the last decade. Next up they turn their attention to a reissue of an out of print EP from 1988 by Jordi Guber and Krishna Goineau as Velodrome. Villalobos has been known to drop cuts from it, which should give you a good idea of its musical style: freaky 80s electro built on steppy drums, with taut and twanging synths reverberating around the mix, as exemplified by the opener. "Glasfabrik" is a hyper-speed cut with a tongue in cheek vocal, while "Capataz" is the most well-known joint with its acid bass and crashing hits.

Maritime Tatami (12" + lyric insert)
Cat: DE 055. Rel: 13 Jan 14
  1. Maritime Tatami
  2. A Game Of Despair
Review: Having released over fifty records since their foundation back in 2009, Dark Entries use the widened exposure afforded by that excellent Patrick Cowley compilation released in the last quarter of 2013 as a springboard to launch a new dedicated 12" series. Retaining their archival approach, the first release focuses on the short-lived Italian act Victrola; formed as a four piece combo in Messina, Victrola slimmed down to the synthesizer and guitar-based duo Antonio "Eze" Cuscina and Carlo Smeriglio and moved to the fertile music scene growing in early 80s Florence. In 1983, the pair issued their one record-shaped contribution to the early 80s Italian synth scene in the shape of Maritime Tatami, a two-track 12? issued on the Electric Eye label. Recorded using the Roland TR303 and TR606 at a time when these models had only been made available, so this reissue of Maritime Tatami from Dark Entries offers a chance for people to assess a slice of analogue experimentation at its most nascent.

Sour EP (12")
Cat: MNQ 049. Rel: 03 Sep 14
  1. Sour
  2. Sour (Vanzetti & Sacco remix)
  3. 20-20
Review: Initially a duo responsible for a sole 7" release on Blind Prophet, Void Vision re-emerges here as the sole project of Shari Vari on this sublime 12" for the excellent Mannequin Records. The three track Sour precedes a debut Void Vision LP for the Berlin-based operation which is apparently due later this year and we cannot wait based on the sounds explored here. Lead track "Sour" is a ripe and muscular Italo track which is profoundly danceable and wholly erotic, whilst the accompanying remix from Bordello A Parigi pair Vanzetti & Sacco does a splendid job in magnifying more dancier elements of Void Vision's production. The full throttle instrumental thrust of closing track "20/20" will please fans of Void Vision's earlier work though we are more focused on what she's going to do next!

Review: While most editions of the "Many Faces Of" compilation series will be of little interest to electronic music fans, this volume should be essential listening to anyone with even a passing interest. It focuses on legendary synth-pop sorts Depeche Mode and gathers together tracks from spin-off bands, collaborations, little-known remixes by band members past and present and cover versions of their best work by other acts. While highlights come thick and fast throughout, our current favourites include Martin Gore's moody electroclash remix of Senor Coconut's "Smooth Operator", Vince Clarke's cheeky Italo-disco collaboration with West India Company (a cover of "Ave Maria"), Nouvelle Vague's cheery cover of "Master & Servant" (in which Martin Gore provides backing vocals) and Enrico Cacace's wonderful instrumental tribute to "Policy Of Truth".

  11. Fad Gadget - "Back To Nature" (5:51)
Review: With the renewed attention surrounding industrial and EBM in the last few years (and its influence on techno, again), it's important that someone with credentials gives the new generation a decent history lesson. Fitting that Berghain resident and MDR boss Marcel Dettmann curates a compilation of classics from the sound's heyday: here's someone who actually lived through it. As part of Amsterdam imprint Dekmantel's Selectors Series, these gems from yesteryear should certainly set the record straight and provide solid reference points for new school retroverts. Highlights (and there's many) include: Belgian EBM legends Front 242 with "Don't Crash", Philadelphia industrial underdogs Executive Slacks' "So Mote It Be" and the mandatory Cabs track comes in the form of "Low Cool" (the Marcel Dettmann Edit, no less). It wouldn't be a proper industrial comp without a bit of Wax Trax! would it? Label staples Ministry appear with their 1982 song "Same Old Madness", a period in the band's history that some consider their finest.

Review: Initially recorded and released in 1980, Ashra drummer Harold Grosskopf's debut solo album "Synthesist" has long been one of the essential audio documents of the "Berliner Schule" (Berlin school) electronic scene. It's certainly a stunning album: a set of attractive, futuristic, far-sighted synthesizer soundscapes, created at a time when electronic music technology was still in its infancy, that combines heady, beat-less ambient workouts and Terry Riley style minimalist movements, with more up-tempo workouts that recall the period work of Tangerine Dream. This 40th anniversary reissue from Bureau B showcases a re-mastered version of the original album on side A, with a second disc of equally ear-catching contemporary interpretations by the likes of Paul Fick, Steve Baltes, Love Songs and Stefan Lewin.

Review: Stroom's latest chunk of left-of-centre brilliance comes from Jan Van Der Broeke, an artist active since the 1980s who's arguably most famous for his work under the Absent Music, June 11 and The Misz aliases. 11,000 Dreams is his first career retrospective and draws on 30 years worth of self-released cassettes and CD-Rs. It's a sublime set, all told, pulling together dreamy, evocative, melodious and soft-touch tracks that blur the boundaries between ambient, skewed downtempo pop, blissful warmth, spoken word laden cheeriness (the odd but brilliant "My Lesbian Girlfriends") and spacey cuts laden with exotic instrumentation and whistling synthesizer melodies.

Review: Given that DMC has been delivering exclusive remixes to DJs since the 1980s, it makes sense for them to dip into their archives now and then and offer-up the best of them to a new generation of selectors. Here they do just that, gathering together their best interpretations of classic cuts from Sheffield synth-pop heroes the Human League. There's much to admire throughout, from RKL's stomping, house-style take on 'The Sound of the Crowd' and a sleazy, stripped-back, early progressive house style remix of 'Love Action' (very Brothers in Rhythm), to tweaked and heavily edited club revisions of 'Don't You Want Me' and Phil Oakey's collaboration with Giorgio Moroder, 'Together in Electric Dreams'.

Review: Emotional Rescue continue to mine hidden corners of esoteric music to bring your rarified delights in a freshly mastered form. This time the label has turned to cult Spanish label Auxilio De Ciento, who have been quietly picked up by more tuned in heads for their excellent new wave, synth pop and industrial wares. La Caida De La Casa Usher present the most abrasive material on here, but largely it's a relaxed affair. You can lose yourself in the bubbling synthesizer goodness of Bene Gesserit and Danny Alias, or trip out to the pattering drums of Zazou, Nodland, Lema.

The Bay Area Retrograde series from Dark Entries and this second chapter particularly, showcases San Francisco's buzzing post-punk and noise scene of the early 1980's, so we're talking real pioneering stuff here! There's everyone from Factrix to the legendary Tuxedomoon, but also some lesser known and more obscure names such as Chrome - a truly badass outfit if you ask us. Dark Entries couldn't have done a better job and this is the leftfield pick of the week from us!

Review: 2011's BART: Bay Area Retrograde Volume 1 LP was one of the albums that put San Francisco's Dark Entries label on the map. Like this year's second volume, it featured a sublime mix of lost, forgotten and previously unreleased gems from San Francisco's little-known early '80s underground new wave, post-punk and synth-pop scenes. Here, both volumes in the series make it onto CD for the first time, having previously been available only on vinyl. Naturally, there are plenty of highlights to enjoy, from the Residents style throb of Standard 0f Living's "NFA" and the magnificently stylish synth-pop of Quiet Room, to the maudlin coldwave of Tuxedomoon and riotous EBM pulse of Human Being Men's "Human Dub".

Review: In 10 years Dark Entries has become one of the most important labels catering to an ever-swelling throng of nightwalkers seduced by the sinister underbelly of electronic music culture. Both as a reissue vessel for obscurities from the annals of DIY synthesizer deviance and a platform for emergent artists cut in the same mould, it's hard to imagine the contemporary landscape without Josh Cheon's mighty imprint. Of course, they're marking their decade anniversary in style with 10 fresh cuts from across their roster, new and old, making it to vinyl for the first time and spanning 10 different countries. The allure of sinister incantations from arcane circuitry is a global phenomenon that spans many eras, sounding as old as the hills and beamed in from the future at the same time, and Dark Entries is the perfect vessel to traverse the timeline.

Review: The guys over at Stones Throw did us a massive favour this year by compiling these long-forgotten experimental pieces form the 80s and 90s. This is the second chapter and we couldn't have expected any better from Peanut Butter Wolf's imprint. There's plenty of rarities and gems here, starting with with the opener by Hard Cops, "Dirty" an italo-influenced electro stomper with an unmistakable 80s edge to it. Philippe Laurent's "Distortion" is another massive track, with those wavering lyrics falling apart over the grinding beat beneath it; "HSTA" by Das Ding is also unmissable and worthy of any collectors shelf. To be honest, there isn't a single average piece here and if you haven't got this compilation already, you're making a huge mistake...

Review: For those with an interest in the development of electronic music in the late '70s and early '80s, the sporadic synth-wave collections from New York-based Minimal Wave Records have always been essential listening. This latest missive, originally released on a limited vinyl pressing earlier this year, offers another treasure trove of little known and unreleased material from the period. Most pleasingly, it offers a truly global outlook, showcasing music from Japan, the US, UK and the former Yugoslavia. Predictably, there's much to enjoy, from the skewiff vocoder electro of Polaroid and low-end madness of Robert Lawrence to the synth-phonic doodlings of Reserve and new wave strut of Danton's Voice.

Review: Over the last two or three years, New York's Minimal Wave outpost has focussed on releasing plenty of new music that fits in line with their unashamedly 'cold-wave' approach, and this has opened them to a whole variety of listeners and DJs. However, in our opinion, where they truly shine is in providing the underground masses with compilations such as this latest The Bedroom Tapes: A Compilation Of Minimal Wave From Around The World 1980-1991, a glorious snapshot of all the very best slices of lo-fi that has largely gone unnoticed to the modern eye. Of course, the majority of these tunes are now expensive in their original formats, but we're taking about a small crew of Discogs sharks who are upping the prices. Here, you're able to properly - and peacefully - enjoy some of the very best minimal machine-drum soul from peeps like Karen Marks, Vorgruppe, Perfect Mother and Aural Indifference, among others. This truly is a feast for the modern digger. Excellent.

Review: The 1980s was a breakthrough time for underground electronic music. Before restrictive genre definitions saw different modes of expression streamlined, the options were wide open in the lawless surge of post punk and industrial culture. This finely curated compilation from PIAS provides an excellent overview of some of the deadliest operators from this wildly creative time - the names involved are integral to the development of electronic music in the 80s. Throbbing Gristle, DAF, Cabaret Voltaire, Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Meat Beat Manifesto - just some of the legendary names shown in their best light on this essential collection.

Review: Minimal Wave present their first double vinyl selection since their breakthrough Minimal Wave Tapes compilation released in conjunction with Stones Throw a few years back. This time Veronica Vasicka and company switch their focus to the cult mid 80s Swedish synth cassette compilation Orgelvark. The 23 tracks spread across the two heavy weight 160g slabs of vinyl give a newly remastered look at the multifaceted music which surfaced from the underground tape scene in Sweden, bridging the gaps between outright synth pop, industrial music and more. This vinyl edition includes five unreleased tracks, along with a rather enlightening letter from the compiler Tor Sigvardson as well as detailed band notes across the gatefold sleeve. It makes for an enlightening peak at the fledgling beginnings of Swedish synth based music, a genre which these days is stronger than ever.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: The Alternative Funk series was a hidden weapon for obsessive collectors of 80s obscurities across the spectrum of new wave, minimal wave and other such cult movements in this most creative of eras. With Platform 23 having just dropped the first volume of reissued material from this deep cover collection, they're right back on the case with another 15 oddball gems for your delectation. Dee Nasty's "Orientic Groove" is as exotic and funky as it sounds, while 3M create a kind of nightmarish collage of noise, found sound, percussive lurch and a positively unhinged brass section. That gives you just some idea of the scope you can expect to enjoy on this welcome reissue.

Review: It has been two years since the first 'Sowas Von Egal' compilation arrived courtesy of Hamburg label Bureau B and Hamburg party series Damaged Goods. The world is unrecognisable compared to then, but diving headfirst into a bunch of obscure tracks from one of Europe's countercultural epicentres, recorded during one of the country's most troubled but fascinating and creative periods, is still a wonderful experience. While tracks here veer from having one foot in indie punk to full blown electronic assaults, the energy levels are consistent throughout - in short, they all pack a punch, whether it's the runaway juggernaut of Vono's 'Fred Der Ritter' or the frenzied looped bleeps on 'Steig Den Luis Trenker' by 4712. Similarly, with distortions, fizzes, crackles and all manner of other audible DIY tells, it's hard to argue with the fact that everything here puts artistry first and foremost, giving commerciality short shrift.

Review: The legacy of homegrown Australian rock in the '80s may be dominated by somewhat boisterous and boorish forces in the mainstream, wiith the like of Midnight Oil, Jimmy Barnes, INXS and John Farnham comprising the national heroes, yet cultural stereotyping would ignore a whole plethora of underground artists that went almost completely unnoticed yet continue to delight some thirty plus years on. 'Oz Waves', compiled by maverick DJ Steele Bonus, includes the unlikely likes of MX Ultra & The Assassins, Zerox Dreamflesh and The Horse He's Sick, yet their minimal electronics, dub-tinged strangeness and post-punk dreamscapes sound like another weird world - one on a thrilling knife-edge between past, present and future.

Review: LTM Recordings offer up an expanded edition of B9: Belgian Cold Wave, the compilation of early Belgian cold wave and primitive electronics originally issued by the iconic Sandwich Records label back in 1981. This deluxe double vinyl pressing expands on that original edition with ten further tracks by Belgian acts that give a more conclusive overview of the country's contribution to the European cold wave moment that swept the continent in the late '70s and early '80s. So along with tracks by Digital Dance, Polyphonic Size, Pseudo Code and Prothese (Daniel 'Front 242' Bressanutti's first recording project) this new edition takes in the works of The Names, Marine, Front 242, The Neon Judgement, Siglo XX, Allez Allez, Berntholer, Nausea, Jung and Isolation Ward. Presented in a gatefold sleeve with new artwork from Victor Vasarely, B9: Belgian Cold Wave 1979-1983 also includes detailed sleeve noted and periodical images and will prove all too tempting for those seeking a particularly Belgian focus on Cold Wave.
