Review: Some of the most promising Swedish artists on this new Moll release. The label is an excellent guideline of today's techno movement. Firm thumping kicks are at the base of these dancefloor monsters. The boys turn out to be full blown bassline engineers, pushing the envelope when it comes to supersonic frequencies.

Jack The Beatbox (DJ Wild remix)
Review: DJ Small & David André are rising fast on the Parisian scène after their début on Nouveau Né Records last year. The pair is now hyperactive with Small being between Paris & Shangai, playing all over and David buried in the studio to fine-tune the sound of their next releases. So after a limited release on RZ last month, they are now on the motherboard Brique Rouge with a new track called "Jack The Beatbox" and it's damn jackin' with an electro edge, a ravey breakdown, some funky beats. It comes with extra remixes from none other than Mazi under his guise Audio Soul Project and DJ Wild from the Catwash fame. The perfect package!

UzinA Galati (Baltazar remix) (7:38)
Review: We're always going to be interested to hear what a new label from Romania has to say for itself and so it is that we introduce to you the first 12" from Alphabet. It starts life with a collaborative EP that pits Atmann and Bread & Butter together across a trio of nice tunes. 'Blowfield' opens with a melange of spoken words and silky minimal rhythms topped with trippy details. 'UzinA Galati' then rides a nice undulating house groove with organic percussion and screwy leads and 'Hard-Drive' has a more edgy and hard-hitting tech house feel. Baltazar remixes the same cut into a tense dead-of-night freak-out.

Death Is Nothing To Fear 1
Cat: SPC 40. Rel: 13 Feb 07
Audion - "I Gave You Away"
Par Grindvik - "Casio"
Bodycode - "Exciting Ride"
Review: Spectral's first instalment of the "Death Is Nothing To Fear" series mixes the established with the new and embraces the international status the label's roster has earned after seven years of diverse, consistent output. The a-side is dedicated to Audion. The 12-minute "I Gave You Away" is a blistering mix of sprightly bass kicks and bubbly keypad melodies. On the flip, newcomer Pär Grindvik steps up the pace with the addictive, playful "Casio", while Bodycode weighs in with "Exciting Ride", a cut characterized by the spooky keyboard lines and disembodied vocal samples. "Death Is Nothing To Fear" proves that techno is still the most innovative and exciting dance music in the world.

Autre - "Seiryu" (7:02)
Kryptic Universe - "01309 Stairways" (9:04)
Owen Jay & Brian James - "Chordless" (5:25)
Review: Given the success of the first two installments of the Editions series, it's little surprise to see XDB put together a third volume for his Metrolux imprint. He's assembled another crack team of international contributors, too. Autre and Xinner join forces on opener "Nebula", a fine combination of low-slung techno drums, restless electronics and deep space sonics. Autre goes solo to deliver the fluttering, late night hypnotism of "Seiryu", before Kryptic Universe steals the show with "01309 Stairways", a superb chunk of rolling intelligent techno that features an extended ambient intro. Owen Jay and Brian James round things off with the distorted drum machine hits and woozy riffs of "Chordless" (which, to be fair, is an accurate title).

Love & Joy '97 (7:00)
Planet Love (6:02)
Review: Danish artists B From E lands on the increasingly impressive French label Happiness Therapy with a trio of new EPS that delve into spirituality and pay home to the transformative power of dancing. 'Siphonophore' gets underway with a trance-laced melodic edge and high-speed drums then hypnotic neo-trance layers wash over you on the speedy 'Storm' and 'Dreams Of Sasabone' taps in the hard house revival with bouncy but funky kicks and glowing neon pads. 'Love & Joy '97 has an old-school feel with euro dance beats and warped basslines and 'Planet Love' completes the trip with a blend of psychedelic synth colours, filtered vocals and optimism in the uplifting grooves.

Review: B.Love is next up on Leeds legend Ralph Lawson's 20/20 label having come to his attention on Record Store Day 2024 with his Music Dance Experience EP and then later that day when playing as a resident at the Bizarre Trax party Lawson was en route to play. Here he showcases his electro sound across four cuts starting with 'Rhythm Freq', a celestial and disco-tinged sound. 'Movement Feeling' is a party starting cut with old school style and plenty of percussive lushness, then 'Soda Junior' brings louche, low-slung disco funk before 'Bisous' shuts down with more cosmic playfulness and vibrant synth colours.

The Reason

The Reason (7:05)
Ancestors Fun (7:03)
Review: There's deep, and then there's the work of Bastian "Baaz" Volker. The German producer's work is rarely less than ultra-deep, and this return to Slices of Life - a label he last blessed four years ago - is predictably hazy and hypnotic. Title track "The Reason" is typical of his style, with becalmed, head-in-the-clouds chords and chopped-up vocal samples reclining over a crispy tech-house groove. Flipside "Ancestors Groove" is a little livelier, both rhythmically and structurally, with chiming blasts of melody and suitably soulful vocal samples riding a backing track rich in bustling bass, bumping beats and drowsy pads.

Kraut House (6:53)
You (Can't) (3:02)
Modual (6:20)
Simple E (5:51)
Review: Swiss master of all things deep, Bastian Volker is back for the eighth release on his always impressive Office imprint. Not just content with creating some lush music under the Baaz alias or redefining the dub techno sound as Eric Miller (like on his recent album Silhouettes for Sushitech this year), could he be delving into the world of hypnotic techno now also? Brilliant opener "Kraut House" starts the EP off in great form and is reminiscent of the tribal trance sounds of Refracted or Tozzy. On the flip, "Modual" is more like the Baaz we know; deep, dubby and emotive with a bumping baseline, smoky drum patterns and pitch shifted druggy vocals for added effect. Finally "Simple E" adds yet more variety to the release with this dusty and bittersweet slow burner that's perfect for drifting.

We Both Know It's The Last Game We Play (6:59)
Review: Baba Stiltz isn't exactly the first name you'd associate to Will Bankhead's The Trilogy Tapes, but the reality is that the producer's shady strain of deep house works perfectly well with the incorrigibly leftfield label. Moreover, Bankhead has never been one to shy away from anything that he likes, so it would be unfair to limit this incredible imprint to techno or noise. "Keep It Lit" kicks off with a warm, gloriously funky little house groove that reminds us of DJ Nature or even Kyle Hall's early productions whereas, on the flip, "BB 1-2" edges closer to typical TTT territories thanks to its deranged vocal samples and broken arrangement. "We Both Know It's The Last Game We Play" is similarly twisted, and verging towards just the right kind of dark and eerie. This is a fine, three-piece house EP with a hint of TTT's inimitable oddity. 5 stars.

Havai
Review: Phantasy unveil the second round of strange but wonderful electronica from Brazilian newcomer Babe, Terror - this time on fancy purple streaked white marble vinyl. And it's a welcome return for Duke Dumont as well, with the far from prolific producer demonstrating a new found appreciation of creeped out techno paranoia on his remix of "Epicentro". The Duke has always demonstrated a penchant for composition that sits far beyond his contemporaries and the gargling acid drop that grows to end this remix proves to be captivating. Memory Tapes also contributes a remix, transforming the vocal oddity of "Havai" into a track that starts off sounding like Pantha Du Prince before growing into a multi faceted slice of modern electro energy.

Review: Cologne-based electronic music guru Robert Babicz is a man with stamina and many talents, besides producing and performing outstanding dance music he also runs an exclusive mastering service and creates sounds for musical devices. One can say that Mr. Babicz truly lives electronic music. "Sin" is the first single taken from his masterpiece album, "A Cheerful Temper". A very atmospheric track with incredible SFX and hymn-like rave signals on top of a killer beat! The flipside belongs to no one else but Brazilian boy wonder Gui Boratto - he puts the original into a more classy rhythm corset of grooving drums and bass - without losing any rave attitude.

Star (Robert Babicz mix)
Review: Barbarella is proud to announce these new mixes of "Star" by Rob Acid. The track is taken from Rob's "Star EP" on Censored Records and now it appears on the hot new Barbarella label. The new remixes come from two of the top producers of the UK underground scene who both deliver very different interpretations of Rob's original track. On the info sides is Scott Edwards aka Avus, in the past he has recorded for Border Community, Klang Elektronik and Perc Trax. His mix is a classic slice of modern minimalism, dubbing out the track with his trademark glitchy effects. Turn it over and Perc Trax label owner Ali Wells aka Perc, gives us a deep, bassline-driven remix pushed along by a warped drum track. Recent fans of Perc's music include Michael Meyer, James Holden, Slam and Laurent Garnier.

Few have ever matched the matter levels he achieved when it comes to deep minimal and tech house fusions. This latest on his own Trelik takes the form of three classic cuts from two much sought-after EPs - Built In and All That Nothing. Rainstorm (7:04)

Review: Andy Vaz's Background Records has been treating early 00s minimal die hards of late with a run of choice reissues. It was great to see the Smyglyssna getting another outing, and likewise this crucial slice of stripped down surrealism from the mighty Baby Ford. 'One For Sorrow' is a party rocker through and through, with a bubbling bass pulse that hooks you into the groove while the strange vocoder flexing over the top tries to throw you off. 'Rainstorm' uses the subtlest threads of static noise to create a subliminal sense of atmospheric interference around a crisp beatdown, and 'Woody' uses a simple melodic loop to create a mystical energy you could lose yourself in for days.

Westway
Review: Autoreply do the record buying public a favour and give Baby Ford's Tin Of Worms 12" another repress, this time on yellow wax. Baby Ford has been making electronic music since the late 1980s and is regarded by most as one of the key players in the nascent UK acid house scene. His entry into the Autoreply stable is a classy, versatile two tracker. The title track showcases crisp, tight linear drum programming - with ribcage shaking sub bass and supernatural synths which undulate over its eight minute cycle, displaying the original principles of minimal techno alongside forward thinking sound design. On the flip you'll find "Westway", originally recorded on Ford's now defunct hardware set up and mastered from DAT. This track conjours images of smoky late night jazz clubs with its smooth piano chords and strings that seem to float in an out of the mix- set starter, nightclub techno lesson, afterparty showpiece; the choice is yours...

Curfew
Review: With fewer appearances on wax in the last few years, it's always a cause for celebration when Baby Ford crops up with a slew of new wares. This time he's doing the business for the Ugold Series, and he's in fine fettle continuing to explore the minimal abstractions that have characterised his output since becoming aligned with the Perlon imprint in the 00's. "Snakes & Ladders" even sports the trademark weirdo vocal treatment that you would only find on a BF record, while the subtlety of the melodics slowly creeps up on you through repeated listens. The micro shuffle of the beat itself takes no time to work out, so sublime it is in its simplicity. "Last Call" comes on more spaced out, with a whisper of 90s leftfield techno about its disembodied machine bleeps.

Word For Word (4:16)
Review: Legendary minimal - and acid house before that - pioneer Baby Ford very much set the blueprint for the genre back in the late 90s, both solo and with The Ifach Collective, who featured Ian Loveday, Mark Broom and Thomas Melchior (amongst others). Now they are reminding us of the greatness of that work with the first in a series of reissues coming in 2023. These tunes were originally put out back on the legendary Klang Elektronik in 2000. First up is 'Tea Party' by Eon, M-Core, and Baby Ford, an ice-cold rolling dub. 'On The Floor' with Mark Broom gets more percussive and then comes a solo cut from Baby Ford, 'The Healing' which is as heady as can be and finally 'Word For Word' featuring Cheru Amadi layers up slithers of silvery percussion and cuddly bass into dubbed-out tech heaven.

"Caiarna" may feature some peppy beats, but the delay-drenched synth lines and delicate piano fills are fine-tuned for psychedelic impact. "Cavara" pushes the drums to the front and keeps the chords submerged, but still the sound palette is rich and detailed in all the right places. "Demijloc" finishes things off with the most stripped-down offering, getting heavy on the bass to embark on an introspective journey into subliminal dance music of the highest order.

Flat Mates
Review: Wagon Repair welcome a new artist to their ranks in the form of Italian minimal master Luca Bacchetti. "Rolling Brooklyn" is a busy and investigatory track driven by sniffing snare sounds, moist synth balloons and screeching metallic accents. The b-side, "What Ever", progresses defiantly amidst reverb laden howls and sirens, throbbing to a climax with stabbed bass and rolling percussion in an impenetrable surge to the senses. The final cut, "Flat Mates", is led by a dizzy synth haze and fuelled by a tight house rhythm. Luca adds acoustic metal drum sounds into the mix to broaden the tone. All in all, a very nice release.

Review: Fresh after the release of his well-received Wagon Repair debut, we are thrilled to present Italian producer Luca Bacchetti's 'Like a Sadhu EP'. A prominent tech-house DJ and prolific producer with releases on Tenax Recordings and Safari Electronique prior to his work with Wagon Repair, Luca can also be found presenting the excellent Xtrabass show on Samurai FM. Opener 'Like a Sadhu' is a driving tech-house track, motored by a pulsating bass loop and enlivened by fast approaching synth highlights, buzzing rhythmic tones and restless percussive transformations. 'Trust' is saturated with new dimensions, mixing a deep bass drive and clattering percussion with intensifying synth passages and an unnerving ambience. 'The Way To Corvocado' is the deepest of the trilogy, mixing a sparse soundscape with subtle percussive pushes as a stabbed chord passage adds melody.

The eponymous release features all the hallmarks of Melchior's singular sound: from its rich tapestry of ethereal - almost arcane- tapestry of elements reaching near spiritual moments, underpinned by meditative and clipped rhythm programming. Be prepared for yet another altogether magickal experience from the legend.

Review: Ever thought about living behind the polar circle in the city of Murmansk? Mikel Back puts lots of mystic atmosphere of the surrounding northern landscapes into his tracks - forming abstractions of the outside world. Mikhail Maksimov aka Mikel Back is a northern electronic artist from Murmansk - He has been establishing himself in the underground party scene since 1999 as 12-1 Level. In 2003 together with Freska, he created a synth-pop band called "Kola Lounge". Since Summer 2005 Mikhail has been releasing tracks under the name Mikel Back. Mikel's goal is to fuse live synthesizer instrumentation and a wide variety of musical styles to create rich sounds, which can be enjoyed both at home and in the club. His music is full of melancholic subtones - no loungey soundscapes to chill - these cool Nordic tunes all have drive and work very well on the dancefloor!
