Review: Grave Of The Fireflies is arguably the saddest of all the films in the peerless Studio Ghibli canon - a pinnacle of emotional impact in the world of Japanese anime. The soundtrack is of course a major part of that, and so we come to the latest edition in the beautifully presented Image Album Collection series, which goes in deep on the soundtrack to a Ghibli classic. The music itself was composed by Michio Mamiya, and their work is interspersed with dialogue from the film. Alongside the music itself is an extensive set of liner notes which feature round-table discussions between the film's director Isao Takahata and the composers involved in the soundtrack.

Cut from a very familiar cloth, the teenage experience is arguably the most documented in television and film of any experience, save for love (often a tandem theme). Within those pantheons of on-screen entertainment, there are good, bad and awful outings, but almost all are consistently on-point when it comes to the score.
Whether you like Euphoria the show, then, is almost irrelevant. Review: Are video games the ultimate 21st Century culture form? It's a bold statement, but stick with it for a second. The past 100 years were defined, in pop terms at least, by two specific creative industries - music and cinema. Today, elements of both are cornerstones of what makes a fantastic playable story, the current pinnacle of an industry's journey from den of geek to den of cool, with releases such as the PlayStation 4 and 5 title Horizon: Forbidden West bringing in numbers other mediums can only dream of in the post-pandemic age of empty movie theatres, free streaming, and concert no-shows. Shifting no less than eight million copies in its first 12 months on sale, the release was praised for technical developments, combat action, acting, and visual beauty. The tunes aren't bad either. Setting the scene in a post-apocalyptic vision of the American West, several years in the future from now, it's a cunning mix of organic, folk-like elements with ambient and classical, and it's well worth a listen even if you've never picked up a control pad in your life.

Review: Let's make one thing clear here - you don't need the technical back story to appreciate Xkatedral Anthology Series II. The second instalment in a compilation series of archival work by composers affiliated with the Xkatedral imprint, the six tracks offered are a fine advertisement for contemporary classical, whether that's the sombre feels of Kali Malone's 'Music for Low Quartet', or the celestially celebratory wall of sound that follows on Jessica Ekomane's 'First Light'. Nevertheless, understanding the framework in which these arrangements were made adds to the sense of listening to very accomplished practitioners and movements. All made between 2018 and 2020, everything on Xkatedral Anthology Series II focuses on synthetic sound and algorithmic composition languages, positioning tracks at the forefront of the point where humans and machines meet to make beautiful music.

Review: If only all record labels were as thoughtful and considerate as Muscat. The imprint opened its catalogue with the first instalment in the now-decade spanning Test Pressing series, in a move it says was all about trying to "check whether the world needs one more label". Clearly, given we're now on part four, they found an audience and enough evidence to support turning this pipe dream into a tangible project, and things have been consistently impressive since launch. The tracks here are all wildly different, although belong in a strange avant grade-electronic hinterland where arrangements can be subtle and delicate or deep and immersive. Andrew Pekler's 'Neon Nocturne', for example, almost sounds like the single-toned acoustic patterns of code being transmitted, while Romeo Poirier offers up 'Haut Lieu' which, while still relatively minimal, makes a pretty bold entrance and continues to create the sense of building crescendo, ebb and flow.

Review: Limbic Resonance go big with this bumper double 12" compilation of absorbing ambient sounds from a range of popular names. Terence Fixmer goes first with booming bass rumbles and sparks of static electricity on 'Threetwoone' then the scratchy textures and mystic moods of 'Cardioid Resonance' set a bittersweet tone from 'Kujo'. Elsewhere Alessandro Adriani's 'Snakeskin' is a suspenseful layering of synths and drums and Ezuri RSOT's 'Blasphemous Bath' is sounds like a communication from a distant planet. Vatican Shadow, Ancient Methods, Zoviet France and more all contribute further excellent to this cinematic album.

It is a superb collection of mellow sounds and ambient atmospheres with some surprising leftfield cuts and curious curveballs along the way.
