Review: Atlanta's deep house don Kai Alce can do no wrong if you ask us. His own sets, productions and label are as good as it gets when it comes to this sort of sound. Here he steps away to fellow house hero Toy Tonics with a new 12" featuring his signature smooth grooves. 'Slide It In' will seduce any floor with its erotic sax lines and rolling drums. 'Space Skat N Dat' has lovely jazzy chord work over funkier drum patterns and onto the flip 'New Life Livin' is a subtle rework of a former cut of Alce's, 'Rough Sands' is key-laced basement house deepness and 'Strollin Thru Barcelona' explores broken beats and nu-jazz influences.

Bondkatten (5:45)
Downstreamed (Mount Liberation Unlimited Ethereal Teen Dream version) (6:57)
Review: Last year, Art Alfie finally went solo after spending the first portion of his career collaborating with fellow Stockholm resident Mr Tophat. This EP for Toy Tonics follows hot on the heels of last year's debut album on Studio Barnhus and a widely acclaimed studio hook-up with Cassy. Our pick of the bunch is woozy and soft-focus opener "Downstreamed", where lilting synthesizer melodies and slowly shifting chords sashay in and out of a drowsy and dub-flecked slow motion rhythm track. Fellow Swedes Mount Liberation Unlimited provide their own "Ethereal Teen Dream" version, which craftily re-imagines Art Alfie's original as a defiantly dubby blend of Scandolearic bliss and hypnotic deep house. Also worth checking is the bounding dub disco/deep house fusion of "Bondkatten".

Sex (6:30)
Review: Since starting their career with a couple of well-regarded EPs on Toy Tonics in 2013, Black Loops has been label hopping. This return to the German imprint follows four years spent churning out EPs for Gruuv, Neovinyl and, most recently, Pets Recordings. Opener "Le Mirage" is a bustling and bass-heavy affair, with melodic deep house pleasantries wrapping themselves around a chunky, U.S-garage influenced groove. The rhythmic skip and bass-heavy bounce continues on "Red Light", where fuzzy electric piano parts come to the fore, while "Sex (Part 2)" effortlessly joins the dots between the hazy loveliness of Italian dream house and the bustle of classic Kerri Chandler records. 'Sex", which boasts a wonderfully sleazy spoken vocal, completes another ear-pleasing package.

The Flame (6:36)
Review: For their first release of 2018, Toy Tonics stalwarts Black Loops is joined in the studio by fellow Italian producer Innocent Soul, head honcho of the recently launched Strictly Street Sounds imprint. The EP's four tracks offer a perfect blend of the former's groovy, chunky deep house sound and the sample-heavy, Chicago-inspired disco-house jams favoured by the latter. Highlights include "Black Soul", a funk-fuelled peak-time jam rich in Hamilton Bohannon style guitar loops and elastic bass guitar samples, the James Brown break-fired weightiness of "Bang the Dancefloor" and the squidgy deep house funk of "The Flame", which boasts a particularly rush-inducing breakdown.

Brigada (feat Phil Mill) (5:26)
Brasiliana (5:13)
Brigada (Esa Williams extended remix) (6:32)
Baile Do Silencio (3:35)
Review: Those who pay attention to South American DJ culture may have encountered Barbara Boeing, a genuine rising star who has slowly been easing herself into music production. This is her debut EP, which was co-produced by another scene starlet, Toy Tonics regular Sam Ruffillo. 'Brigada', featuring Phil Mill, is the headline attraction - a brilliant blend of nu-disco colour, mid-90s US house motifs, hip-house breakbeats and sun-splashed melodies aplenty. Esa Williams remixes, keeping the joyousness of the original version whilst giving the track a bit of a post-kwaito, late 1980s/early 90s South African house feel. Elsewhere, 'Brasiliana' sounds like early 90s Pet Shop Boys after a fist full of happy pills, while 'Baille Do Silencio' sees Boeing brilliantly join the dots between Art of Noise, electrofunk and rushing nu-disco.

25 Hundred Friends (5:42)
Voyager (Piano mix) (6:45)
Slipstream (7:37)
Midnight Visions (5:17)
Review: Munich twosome COEO have long been a reliable source of hybrid nu-disco and house productions, with their releases on Toy Tonics being particularly good. Music For Friends, their first release of 2021, is another rock-solid collection of ear-catching cuts. The most incendiary, peak-time ready number is undoubtedly 'Voyager (Piano Mix)', a brilliantly rush-inducing slab of piano house revivalism with added nu-disco synths, though EP opener '25 Hundred Friends', a tough-as-teak blend of chunky deep house, fluid piano solos and warming jazz-funk instrumentation, pushes it close. Elsewhere, 'Slipstream' is a borderline Balearic chunk of dreamy and melodious deep house, while 'Midnight Visions' is colourful, emotive and musically intricate.

She Keeps It Good (5:47)
Review: For the fifth volume in their Tonic Edits series, the Toy Tonics crew has handed over the reins to label regular and sometime Razor 'N' Tape contributor COEO. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout. Opener "Orlando Magic" offers a tightened up, re-arranged take on a killer chunk of highlife disco, while "Cabrio Magio" appears to be a tooled-up take on a killer South American disco stomper. On the flip you'll find the rubbery electric bass, Chic style clipped guitars and eyes-closed vocals of "1981", as well as "She Keeps It Good", a superb P-funk/boogie rework which sees COEO brilliantly tease out the groove via some seriously cut-up loops.

Flesh World (Kapote Drum Jam version) (10:04)
Review: Having spent the last few years giddily hopping between labels, COEO has decided to settle down. Flesh World is the Munich-based twosome's third 12" of 2017 for Toy Tonics, an imprint they first graced back in 2014. As usual, they're in a positive frame of mind, serving up a trio of tracks rich with both the feel good pulse of disco and boogie, and the metronomic heaviness of house. Both "Flesh World" and "In Motion" explore similar sonic territory, with the duo working a range of ear-pleasing samples from killer old disco and boogie cuts. Best of all, though, is the Kapote Drum Jam version of "Flesh World", which adds a little percussive pressure to an already celebratory workout.

Japanese Woman (5:40)
Matchbox (7:40)
Uber Man (5:36)
Tibetan Dance (5:02)
Review: The sixth volume in Toy Tonics occasional "Tonic Edits" series comes courtesy of label regulars COEO, a Munich-based duo who previously proved their edit credentials via a tasty 12" on Razor-N-Tape. This collection is arguably even better than its predecessor and sees them take their rusty scalpels to a quartet of Japanese disco-pop tracks from the 1980s. There's much to admire, from the sleazy electrofunk grooves, bold pianos and sparkling pianos of "Matchbox" (A2) and the slap-bass propelled boogie goodness of the Teena Marie-esque "Uber Man" (B1), to the freestyle influenced synth-pop bounce of cheery closing cut "Tibetan Dance". Arguably best of all, though, is lead cut "Japanese Woman", a bi-lingual disco song rich in rubbery bass, Chic style guitars and sparkling synthesizer flourishes.

Review: Following a recent dalliance with Brooklyn-based Razor 'N' Tape Reserve, COEO returns to the loving arms of Toy Tonics with another solid four-track excursion. Happily, they hit the ground running with the rushing positivity of "Mydonna", a bumpin' chunk of peak-time house goodness built around some superb disco samples and a bustling groove. The accompanying, "alternate cut" smartly emphasizes some of the original instrumentation, whilst adding some subtle swing to the disco-house drums. On the flip, you'll find the deep, smooth and sensual "Torrow", and the breezy, atmospheric, piano-laden shuffle of "Coast To Coast".

Review: Unwaveringly reliable house stable Top Tonics keep the good stuff coming this October as COEO steps up with an extra vibes four tracker. This is pure and unreserved house joy, music to party to without a care in the world. It's the bouncing drums and happy trumpets that make it so, with energetic piano stabs and driving bass all working to make you forget your woes. The music is nothing particularly new, but it is pulled off with such a sense of style and class that it's impossible to ignore. Whether all out and sweat inducing or ever so slightly deeper, we cannot get enough of these cuts.

Review: Toy Tonics is a real favourite here at Juno - their house is always fresh, never cheap and often with an authentic link to the past. Next up they have London's Cody Currie serving up his debut long player. Lucas is a nice broad work that opens with some of the broken beat the UK capital is so well known for before progressing through loose house funk on 'Money,' percussive and soulful vibes like 'Red Hot' and steamy slow jams in the form of 'That Stick.' And that's just the first side of the first record with three more to come that are just as good.

Review: Toy Tonic always deliver interesting, functional, emotional house music and here comes another such serving from the so-far so-excellent Cody Currie. The opener is as deep and jazzy as they come, with rich chords and twinkling pads all floating way above a nice warm bassline. 'LS Anthem' plays with broken beats and warped chords that are woozy and rich as a spoken word sample brings a sense of cool. 'When The Time Is Right' then keeps up the magical Rhodes work and a soulful, shuffling groove before 'M9' picks up the pace a little without loosing any of the heart and version of 'Moves' closes in steamy fashion.

Review: Having graced the likes of Razor N Tape, Classic and Shall Not Fade, in recent years Cody Currie has bedded himself in deep on Toy Tonics - just check the London-based producer's Lucas LP from last year if you need further proof. The label have taken a peep back at that album to serve up this feel-good remix package with some serious talent on re-fix duties. First up Dan Shake serves up a tough-bumpin' version of Cash before Sam Ruffillo and Kapote have fun amping up the funky elements of the track. On the flip, the mighty Kaidi Thatham lays down a typically soul-charged version of 'Money' before Jamie 3:26 takes the track deeper, riding on a sweet Moog bassline that will pull in the stiffest of crowds until everyone's feeling good and loose.

Review: DJ Sneak is in a great run of form right now, which is all the more impressive given that he has been turning out his signature house sounds for more than 30 years now. The self-declared House Gangster recently impressed on Dam Swindle's Heist Recordings label and now makes this way to the always-assured Toy Toncis outlet. He offers up four cuts that veer away from his loop, filter-heavy house into more edgy and late-night minimal and techno but with the robust sound design and compelling sense of underlying groove that you always expect from the man.

Review: Forging his craft on a penchant for re-edits, Fred Berthet has issued forth a healthy amount of discoid funk in a short space of time since first appearing on Superbreak. Now he has been snapped up by Toy Tonics to deliver this four track EP which is packed full of craftily deployed house groove with plenty of classic reference points, not least the unmistakable 20th Century Steel Band lick on "Venusian Missing". "Angels Behind The Bar" is particularly sharp with its rich spread of samples and engrossing synth stabs creating a neon-lit fantasy around a crisp drum arrangement.

Review: Gold standard house label Toy Tonics operates at what you might call the traditional end of the spectrum but always manages to find fertile new ground within that. This is another case in point, an excellent EP from Nathalie Duchene that gets the party vibes going from the off. 'Praia' is a hearty disco house serving with lashing of funk and an exotic vocal. The Yuksek remix is all big Philly strings and camp disco energy while 'Glatson' slips into a deeper, darker, more late night but still melodically cosmic groove. A Boom Bass remix then explores Mediterranean house soundscapes.

Review: Stefan Lindblom made his debut as Gome last year, serving up a colourful and vibrant EP on Toy Tonics rooted in the 'Munich Machine' productions of Giorgio Moroder and shirts-off Italo-disco. He flips the script a little on this equally as impressive sequel, kicking things off with the pleasingly sleazy, P-funk fuelled electrofunk workout 'Teach You', whose risque spoken word vocals are as seductive as they come. The tasty original mix comes backed with the sparser, slap-bass sporting 'Erobique Remix' and two bonus flipside cuts: the rushing, old school piano house/acid house fusion of 'Come On (Piano Mix)' and deep, TB-303 and vocoder-sporting electro number 'Electric Boulevard'

This Gome pair come from Hamburg and make happy house music with lashings of disco goodness that is inspired by the 1980 Italo and Munich disco scene. 'Fever (Of The Night)' opens up with some fantastic mic work and glistening melodies, then 'Bier & Gold (Vocoder Jam)' rocks an old school electro jam complete with vocoder vocals. There is sleaziness to spare on the dirty ghetto pumper 'Bier & Gold' then a two part 'Shrimp Cocktail' that gets you up on your toes with dazzling synths and retro-future grooves to bring in the fun times.

Review: Just over a year after their Home Schooling EP appeared on Toy Tonics, Julian Marks and Robin Townshend bring their Gome project back to Toy Tonics. The headline attraction is undoubtedly 'Elevator Man', a wonderfully warming and infectious chunk of samba-tinged deep house/Balearic nu-disco fusion piled high with attractive synth sounds, loose-limbed Latin house drums and evocative spoken word vocals. It comes backed with two hugely impressive revisions - a rolling, piano-sporting Chicago deep house tweak from Mike Dunn and a kaleidoscopic Telephones revision that joins the dots between vintage Italian dream house and tactile Balearic house - as well as bonus cut 'Television', a dub disco-goes-house collaboration with regular studio buddy David Bay.

Review: Fresh from fine recent outings on Lovedancing and Quintessentials, rising star Felipe Gordon releases his first EP on Toy Tonics, a label he's been loosely affiliated with since contributing a track to a compilation style EP last year. The centrepiece of the 12" is clearly "Acid Party at Tuesaquillo", a cut that cleverly combines classic deep house elements (woozy chords, spine-tingling pianos) with the jacking rhythms and mind-altering acid lines of early Chicago house. While the track arguably didn't need remixing, we're rather enjoying the deeper, jazzier interpretation from Retrogott and DJ Qualle, not to mention the enveloping warmth of Seb Wildblood's Detroit Techno-meets-deep house rework.

Review: Toy Tonics output is not only reliable, but it is also hugely relatable for lovers of house music. It is steeped in classic tropes and real musicality but always has enough about it to stand out. Felipe Gordon and Bob The Egoist join forces for this latest one and cook up some real magic. 'Freedom' is a clipped and bumpy one to start with before humid organs and tropical percussion are finished with a steamy vocal on 'Don't Wanna Try It.' There is a coy funk to the bass twangs and lithe vocals of 'Sexy Trippin' while 'Expendable' and 'Time' offer more gems to this hugely fresh EP.

In This Moment
In This Moment (Dimitri From Paris & DJ Rocca remix)
Review: New German imprint Toy Tonics launch with panache and style, scooping up the instantly familiar Hard Ton for the hard jacking, high pitched action of the Not Again EP. According to the press release, Toy Tonics' remit is to focus on Berlin-centric artists whose music references 90s house and German electrofunk, which makes Hard Ton an obvious candidate. The title track "Not Again" is a glorious combination of fully primed drum machine funk, rich analogue bass, raved up keyboard stabs, deviating acid lines and of course Hard Ton's singularly unique holler. The ever dependable Snuff Crew are a perfect choice to remix the track, stripping down the melodic excesses and introducing their own unpredictable acid refrain and uber raved stabs to give the track a fresh look. Hard Ton's "In This Moment" throws down expansive keys and pads over rigidly framed "Set It Off" drums and it's given a looser, uplifting, almost 90s freestyle sheen by Dimitri From Paris and DJ Rocca.

Food Of Love (DJ Sprinkles Deeperama remix)
Review: Berlin house head Hard Ton returns to the Toytonics label he inaugurated last year with another round of jacking 90s vocal house. "Food From Love" has all the electrofunk tendencies of his last Toytonics release, combining a raw drum machine rhythm with midnight keys and a rising arpeggio which perfectly complements the yearning Bronski Beat-esque vocal. "From Club To Club" meanwhile wears its rave influences a little more explicitly on its sleeve, with a bubbling acid line and neon house stabs popping off in the background, while the pitched down backing vocals offer a subtle contrast to its A-side companion. On the flip, "Food Of Love" is given a rather stunningly deep rework by the legendary DJ Sprinkles, who adds his own meandering bassline and latin percussion elements to give the whole thing a welcome bit of swing, before soaring off on an improvised piano line at the end.

Karl Hector & Nicolas Tounga - "Ngunga Yeti Fofa" (The Joaquin Joe Claussell Electric Afrika version) (11:36)
Vito & Druzzi - "Night Masquerade" (7:30)
Kapote - "Besamo Fly" (7:03)
Review: There's much to enjoy on the latest volume in Toy Tonics' ongoing hallucinatory house series, regardless of your psychedelic state of mind. The undoubted standout is Joe Clausell's epic version of Karl Hector and Nicolas Tounga's "Ngunga Yeti Fofa", a feverish, dub-flecked deep house interpretation of a track rich in both African and South American vocals and instrumentation. That said, we're also fans of Vito and Druzzi's "Night Masquerade", where Steve Reich style marimba melodies and fizzing synthesizer solos rise about a jaunty, tropical house groove, while Kapote's "Besamo Fly" is a lolloping, mid-tempo romp full of delay-laden African vocal snippets, jaunty Afro-funk horns and sludgy drumbeats.

It Feels Good (4:31)
Playing With My Mind (4:35)
Pose (5:09)
Got To Survive (4:32)
Review: As reliable as your favourite old pair of jeans, Toy Tonics keep on keeping on with yet another more than handy EP. This one is from Joel Holmes who is a 38-year-old American jazz pianist and four time Grammy nominee who was also the musical director of Carl Craig's Synthesizer ensemble. He opens up with a dazzling house number in 'It Feels Good', It's perfect US house complete with Detroit synths and a timeless male vocal filled with buttery warmth. Jazz keys com to the fore on 'Playing With My Mind', 'Pose' is more chord-led deep house of the highest order and 'Got To Survive' closes and a cute and romantic vibe. A sensational EP.

Give It To Me (edit) (8:03)

Grandmaster (edit) (7:21)
Pleasure (edit) (6:14)
Review: Although it was established three or four years ago, it's only been in the last 12 months that Toy Tonics' edit offshoot Tonic Edits has really come into its own. The label's seventh missive is one of its strongest to date and comes courtesy of Berlin-based deep house stalwart Kapote. He kicks things off in style with the eccentric electrofunk brilliance of "Give It To Me" before diving into hybrid disco/P-funk pastures on the deliriously tongue-in-cheek silliness of "Pump It". Over on side B, "Grandmaster" is a fine rework of a strange, stripped-back early disco-rap tune laden with spacey synthesizers and clipped guitars, while "Pleasure" puts a new spin on a hazy, boogie-era cut by the band of the same name.

Review: Kapote is the enigmatic staple of Berlin's Toy Tonics label, and he's back with another serving of wicked house on "Brasiliko" which takes its cues from classics like the West London sound of Archive Records/Seji, while the wonderful remix by Byron The Aquarius goes for the original NYC jazz house sound from Kenny Dope and Joe Claussell. Finally, "Salva Tion" takes it even deeper into this territory (think 4hero).

Tonite (Marvin & Guy Obscure mix) (9:30)
Salvation (FYI Chris remix) (6:03)
Review: Berlin's Kapote has fast become a staple of local label Toy Tonics - this will be his fifth release on the imprint in as little as three years. These remixes by some of the top names in house music are equally as worth your while: "Temptation" from last year's EP of the same name gets a remix by Real J: dusty, blissful lo-fi shenanigans from the street in typical Berliner style - much like Money $ex et al. "LOVE" from the Body Move EP (also from 2017) receives a makeover from Swedish wunderkind Art Alfie and is a right stompin' affair that you could imagine hearing up at Panorama Bar on a Sunday night. On the flip, we get treated to a journey down the cosmic hole by Italians Marvin & Guy on their Obscure mix of "Tonite", while FYI Chris' remix of "Salvation" goes down a deeper route on this emotive and swing fuelled number that gallops along quite nicely.

The Slide
Review: The Toy Tonics label has been one of the most consistently good house labels in the past decade plus. Those who see the label design in a record bin immediately recognize and respect the curation of the label by their owners Murk and Kapote. Electric Slide is the latest EP to get the seal of approval for mass release. Producer Kapote brings his high energy Balearic house sound to this record which also mixes in a bit of steady deepness to tracks like 'The Come On' (extended version). The title track blends a late-night disco groove to maximize the mood of the record. Do not sleep on the A-sides though as they blend in some classic Euro sound and New York 90s sounds.
