Fourth Dimension
Apocalypse
Vortex Field
Review: Following in the footsteps of fellow Russians Bop and Enei, Abstract Elements get freaky on a deep and minimal tip with an EP that gets heavier track by track. We kick off with the eerie muffled pastures of the lead track "Fourth Dimension", a cut so sub-heavy it broke two Juno speakers when we tested it in the office. "Apocalypse" drives deeper into tech territories with precise kicks, spine-shuddering atmospherics and a percussive hook that develops with stealth. "Vortex Field" finishes the set with paranoid urgency. Filmic, dramatic and mechanically funky, it's the perfect EP finale.

Final Descent (3:55)
Endless Horizon (8:58)
Walk Below The Waters (7:13)
Wandering Aimlessly (6:56)
Review: Between Northern Electronics, Semantica, and Dimensional Exploration, techno deviant Acronym has built himself quite a reputation for conjuring the coldest, most mechanical sort of techno. In case you didn't get it, we think he's a master at the genre, and he's right up there on our list of favourite contemporaries alongside the likes of Abdulla Rashim. This new EP comes courtesy of the fledgling Auxiliary label, and it starts off by setting a cinematic scene through the hollow sounds of "Final Descent", a placid glow of harmonies which transform into an apocalyptic chain of metallic percussion on "Endless Horizon". "Walk Below The Waters" continues this mood on the flipside, thanks to a jittering artillery of drums and hi-hats that have been glued together by the raucous, minimalistic melodies suspended in the mid-end of the tune, only to be washed-out in the comparatively more diluted and tranquil whirlpool called 'Wandering Aimlessly".

Solemnity

Wave Upon Wave
Lone Star
Review: Auxiliary boss and audio adventurer ASC invites us to get with the "Programme" as he lays down four beautiful compositions that flitter around the idea of concept of drum & bass while remaining wholly unclassifiable and sprung with surprise. "Solemnity" is a beat heavy trip into the cosmos, all crumpled beats and icy textures. "Fulcrum", meanwhile, casts a much dreamier, mesmerising effect thanks to rippling synths and breath-taking washes. "Wave Upon Wave" has a touch of the Vangelis about it; cinematic, wistful and star-gazing, it's full of emotion. "Lone Star" closes the show with the most D&B flavoured track on the EP; the breakbeats cascade delicately in the background while pianos weave in and out of the mix, held in place by ambient pads.

Review: For his first release of 2020 ASC pays homage to mother nature's strongest push-me-pull-you - the "Zenith & Nadir" of the universe... And he does so in the form of a score to a movie that's yet to be made. A smouldering slo-mo analogue weave of synths and drum machines; from the synth-wave subtle triumph of "Anthe" to the unnerving, skin-rippling intro "Cryogenic" to the melancholy finale "The Milankovitch Cycles", he provides the sounds - you create the pictures.

Nimbus (7:49)
Review: Fresh from offering up an IDM, techno and electronica informed album - the must-check "Realm Of The Void" - James Clements AKA ASC returns to the dancefloor via a two-track missive of deliciously dreamy drum and bass futurism. Side A boasts "Clear Skies", a deep, sunrise-ready roller full of punchy jungle breakbeats, ambient chords, Good Looking Records style picturesque electronics and melodies so warm and positive you might want to take them home to meet your parents. If anything, flipside "Nimbus" is even deeper and dreamier. Clements builds suspense via an elongated ambient intro before introducing snare-heavy early D&B drums, rich bass and some suitably sunrise-ready melodies.

Review: James "ASC" Clements has built up a vast discography since making his debut 19 years ago, mixing atmospheric ambient and electronica albums with more floor-focused EPs that see him explore his own particular take on everything from IDM and experimental drum and bass to deep techno and more dub-wise futurist rhythms. This superb double-pack sits somewhere between the two schools, offering up epic, slowly unfurling soundscapes that fix his explorative, head-in-the-clouds chords and melodies to intriguing, club-ready rhythms. He opens with the IDM-influenced deep techno bliss of "Arrival", before exploring similar sonic pastures on the breakbeat-powered iciness of "Redshift". "Blueshift" is a brilliant 17-minute trip into broken techno/ambient techno fusion, while closing cut "Departure" sees Clements casually join the dots between dub space ambient and hazy dub techno.

Review: San Diego-based Brit James Clements has long been regarded as one of the ambient scene's most singular talents. While capable of creating blissfully melodious works, his albums under the ASC alias tend towards the darker and fuzzier end of drone. Trans-Neptuian Objects, his latest full-length excursion, manages to combine both of these approaches into one hugely atmospheric whole. Dark and moody soundscapes, where notes and chords seemingly stretch out to infinity and beyond while mutilated field recordings provide texture, are accompanied by pieces laden with melodic melancholia or, on rare occasions, poignant, picturesque beauty. As a result, highlights are plentiful, from the Pete Namlook style haziness of "Eris", to the floatation tank bliss of closer "Quaoar".

Review: James Clements continues his explorations into the depths of the grey zone as ASC with The Farthest Reaches double pack on Auxiliary. Samurai Music's Presha has excitedly called these four tracks "a definitive musical statement from one of the most important electronic musicians of our era," and who are we to argue with him? Making full usage of the format and available space, this is ASC in exploratory mode across a quartet of deep ten minute plus productions that have it all; sound design, atmosphere, groove, bass weight. To simply call these epic is selling The Farthest Reaches short!

Review: Ambient stalwart ASC continues his cosmic explorations with the brand new LP 'Colours Of Absence', the follow up to this year's 'Original Soundtrack'. Both LPs were written during 2020's lockdowns, a time of much strife and creativity for artists. For ASC, it was a time of downshifting - the producer focused on incorporating as many acoustic instruments as possible into his music, reflecting a kind of musical rewilding. Filled with dropletty pads, plinky string-strikes, and many an ambient wash in between, we're sure this one'll calm your soul well enough.

Review: This follow-up to the ground-breaking, genre-defying 'The Farthest Reaches' was initially released over 6 years ago, now seeing the vinyl treatment with four remixes and a transparent disc. The original four tracks were cut from the same cerebral, abstract techno fabric that 'The Farthest Reaches' created upon its inception back in late 2014. The atmosphere in these remixes is tangible, the reverb spreading out its tendrils to the depths of your mind. These remixes add a healthy dose of variety into the EP, with more breakbeat influences found in 'Inverse Ratio', and a more alien industrial feel on 'Fenris' and 'Zoning' which feels true to the techno spirit. The standout is by far 'Night Clouds' which provides a nice payoff from the buildup, a slow journey to terminal velocity that breaks down into something mechanical and other-worldly. This remix 12" is an exercise in tempo and tone, and ASC does it masterfully.

Review: There's something decidedly bleak, almost heartbreakingly sad, about this collaborative album from sometime D&B producers ASC (head honcho of Auxiliary) and Sam KDC. As with ASC's most recent full-length, the steadfastly ambient The Light That Burns Twice As Bright, it's a moody and atmospheric affair, dealing mostly in FX-laden drones, slow-burn melodies and near-endless chords. At times it sounds like a post-modern take on the drifting ambience of Pete Namlook, at others a weary comment on the current state of Western society. Throughout, there's an odd warmth and emotional resonance that belies its introspective approach. Closer "No Safety Zone", for example, seemingly shimmers with toasty warmth.

Review: It has been a little less than 12 months since Sam KDC bestowed his 'Omen Rising' album on fans, a record that saw the British producer refocus attention on beats - or at least rhythms. Now he's back for another full-length voyage, with ASC in tow; another UK head (although now based in the US) who, interestingly, first cut his teeth in the driving dnb scene of the late-1990s. The results of their combined efforts are as deep as they are textured, with work such as 'Awakened Senses' offering the kind of noises you'd expect to hear after descending into the abyss. Moody, atmospheric sounds glide past our ears, occasionally catching the proverbial glint of a new note before slowly receding into the unknown. 'Interoception', meanwhile, shimmers its way to the mind's eye via icy, twinkling keys.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Both staples of Geoff Presha's Samurai Horo imprint, ASC (James Clements) and Sam KDC (Samuel Wood) teamed up on the former's Auxiliary label for a mesmerising journey into dark ambient soundscapes. Originally released back in 2013, these evocative and engulfing compositions entered the dark atmosphere they had cultivated in their respective 'grey area' reductions, with aesthetics in the vein of Geir Jenssen (Biosphere) or Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto). It was best described by one of our very own reviewers at the time as being 'so deep it makes Autonomic sound like peak time tackle'. And indeed, this joint effort laid down the groundwork for each artist's work to follow: such as Clements' much lauded opus Truth Be Told (released the following year) and Wood's next two chilling and suspense filled journeys Late Night Innominate and KVLTVR 2 - also on Auxiliary.

Sacred Moments
Review: Fresh from opening proceedings on the newly relaunched R&S offshoot Apollo, Manchester based producer Synkro adds another notable entry to his growing discography, collaborating with ASC across two sublime electronic arrangements. They may have the Atlantic Ocean between them, but Synkro and his more celebrated collaborator share clear production ideals and this is hopefully the beginning of an intriguing working relationship. Swift yet delicate rhythms and tectonic deep bass form the backdrop to "Borderline" with ASC and Synkro slowly revealing an expansive atmosphere that positively tingles with delight. In contrast, "Sacred Moments" sees the duo in more pensive form, filling every iota of space between the half step thump that drives the track with downwards spirals of glowering yet restrained textures.

Review: ASC's Auxiliary imprint reaches out way south of the border for the fourth edition of their Symbol series, enlisting New Zealander Consequence to do the honours. Thrillingly, Consequence grabs the chance to deviate as far from the drum and bass template as possible across the four tracks. The opening two excursions see minimal abstractions jitter and click through vast swathes of desolate IDM textures - more interesting is what follows. Consequence burrows deep into heavily reverbed field recordings and creeping dark tones across two immersive tracks which could quite easily pass for Demdike Stare at their creepiest!

Review: ASC calls on the supreme talents of Bvdub for the sixth edition of the Experimental no-holds-barred Auxiliary Symbols series, with Brock van Wey electing to showcase a new project in the form of East Of Oceans. Naturally there's plenty of the emotional depth and rich textures at play on both tracks here, and "Symbol #6.1" is rightfully called a "game changer" by the label, delving deep into an expansive sound that contains several twists before the runout groove appears. It's complemented by the tough breakbeats and vast swathes of orchestral chords that permeate "Symbol #6.2" with a certain added urgency provided by the angelic but not quite decipherable vocals that swing in the sonic mist beneath.

Review: ASC's Auxiliary label has delivered some excellent downtempo, ambient and experimental albums over the last couple of years, effortlessly flitting between obtuse grooves and comfy organic grooves. For the most part, this first full-length from the mysterious Kiyoko falls into the latter category, mixing enchanting found sounds and winding melodies with the yearning blissfulness of classic ambient (reminiscent, in many ways, of the more entertaining releases on the recently re-established R&S offshoot Apollo) and skittish percussion of IDM. With a title like Sea of Trees, you'd expect it be quite pastoral and organic, and by and large it is, with the fruity sweetness of "Valley" and the title track (similar in feel to early Four Tet or Fridge) standing out.

Review: If you'd just been surprised by some unfortunate news, Memory Fields may not be the best album to pull you out of your melancholic mood. That's not to say that there aren't moments of blissful positivity - see the flowing ambience of "Black Prism (Bvdub A Labrynthine Love Mix)" for starters - but for the most part Memory Fields is a slightly paranoid and downbeat concoction. Based around glitchy, half-awake rhythms, Burial-ish atmospherics and sparse, dubwise sounds, it wearily snakes between grandiose ambience and quiet contemplation, creepy intensity and beautiful simplicity. For the most part, it's actually rather good.

The third instalment in the Symbol series, "Symbol #3" delivers ambient electronica, veering off to discover new sound pockets and experimental moments at every opportunity. Blissfully mellow yet inexorably electronic, each track takes you through a minefield of trippy stories and raw and industrial soundscapes. In a word, essential.

Review: KDC digs deep into the satanic study of angles and ratios with his latest Auxiliary exploration. "Atonement" is an industrial strength snowplough cutting through mountains of ice with a high end riff that buzzes over the hammering, bucking drums while "Summoned" takes what could conventionally be a Funk D'Void-style house groove before turning it inside out with a low end drone that grows incessantly, washing out the original groove. "Vertex" plays the role of conjurer with its pertinent hi-hat shaking and scuffing over a deep sea bass/kick arrangement while "Clairvoyance" updates some of the ideas of acid techno but within a drum & bass framework. Genuinely unique.

Review: Far out beat science from Sam KDC for the Auxiliary label. Our journey into the unknown begins with the lolloping, strangely alluring "Immolate". Driven by an otherworldly vocal loop, you've never heard anything like it. "Navigation To Nowhere" is all about the never-ending anticipation and drama of techno. Loopy, insistent and ultimately teasing, you will drive your crowd bananas with this. Further on we're slapped softly by the palpitating dubbish dynamics of "Vessel" and sent to the darkest corners of techno on "Purgatory". Unique, thrilling and daring, KDC has smashed it once again.
