Review: Having distinguished themselves with a series of superb retrospective releases highlighting the work of Leon Lowman, Gigi Masin and Joan Biblioni, Amsterdam label Music From Memory deviate from the path somewhat with his long overdue Gaussian Curve album. Ask yourself what would happen when a elderly Venetian who specialises in sublime ambient music spends a weekend holed up in a Redlight district studio with two of his biggest, most musically gifted fans. The superb Clouds is the answer, with 'Young' Marco Sterk and Jonny Nash following Masin's lead on an eight track exercise in sumptuous, calming composition. The wait has truly been worth it.

Review: **Repress** The Music From Memory label was launched by Redlight Records founders Tako Reyenga, Abel Nagenast and Jamie Tiller earlier this year, sporting a proud mantra of "giving overlooked and unreleased music that we love a second chance". The focus of attention for Music Of Memory's second release falls on the works of celebrated ambient composer Gigi Masin. Born in Venice, Masin's work has been sampled by the likes of Bjork and To Rococco Rot and his albums attract feverish acclaim, with Wind, Masin's privately pressed debut LP a desired rarity for the only the most well-heeled of second hand collectors. It's from this album and a selection of Masin's other released works that Music From Memory draw from for this stunningly meditative double LP retrospective Talk To The Sea, which also includes a healthy amount of unreleased material.

Review: There was chaos and violence, a collision of dark matter and heat. In the maelstrom, a legacy was created and a new moon born. She left something here forever. But amongst infinite black depths, Theia rages on.
Depicting the legendary impact of the planet Theia, Pop Ambient pioneer Markus Guentner returns to vinyl, with a highly anticipated full-length LP on A Strangely Isolated Place.
The evolution of a historic astrological moment is brought to life through a dramatic, evolving soundscape that only Markus could capture. Drones build upon swathes of light, cut by an ever-present sense of fear. The distant shine of stars puncture a pitchblack canvas, as a force gathers momentum and intensifies. Theia's tortuous movement slowly builds in front of you, and the inevitable moment of impact creeps closer and louder. The destruction is desolate, dramatic and beautiful all at once.
Markus has become synonymous with this unique style of ambient music over the years, stretching between intensely layered, looping rhythms, and subtle rolling dubtechno. His early releases on Kompakt set the tone for the respected Pop Ambient sound, through genre defining tracks such as Express Yourself. Markus went on to release albums with Sending Orbs, Ware, Affin and most recently Moodgadget, as well as a Places Series EP for A Strangely Isolated Place (Talking Clouds) and remixes for the label's debut LP, Uncharted Places.
This is Markus' first dedicated vinyl release since 2006, and with it comes the care and attention to detail deserved of such a return. Mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll Studio, RAI also lends his hand to one track, manipulating an
entire soundscape with nothing but his signature guitar.
Pressed on transparent vinyl allowing the artwork to shine amongst the void, ASIP creative talent Nick Brzostowski has turned the artist's vision into a piece of art, with his meticulous custom design.

Review: A Strangely Isolated Place focuses on sparse electronica and drone music, and its founder Ryan Griffin has been pushing abstract sounds by new and exciting talent since 2008. Arovane, who has already appeared on the label with a bundle of devious outsider sounds, teams up with newcomer Hior Chronik (Mu-Nest, Kitchen) for a collaborative LP, In Between. As the name suggests, the album feels like a collection of sounds for contemplative moments, latching heavy loads of electronic sound design together with ingeniously placed field recordings. These recordings, however, aren't abstract layers of fuzz, but instead recall the sounds of nature and the passing of time. The sea, the air, the forests and beyond. Wonderfully meditative and highly recommended to anyone who wants to experience true tranquility.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Schleissen 1 marks the beginning of a major, four-part project from Stuart Leath's Emotional Response label; an in-depth exploration of the "outer reaches" of drone and ambient. It's a grand scheme, highlighted perfectly by the grandiose scale of Serbian maverick Abul Mogard's opener - a hypnotic, 19-minute exploration of modular drone music that's as freaky as it is beautiful. Stefan Schwander dons his now familiar Harmonious Thelonious alias on the flip, laying down two brilliantly melodious synthesizer pieces inspired by the cyclical compositions of acclaimed minimalist composer Steve Reich. Both pieces are borderline stunning, and more than worth the admission price.

Review: Blackest Ever Black have performed an interesting exercise in issuing this new 12" from Tropic Of Cancer along with the Archive: The Downwards Singles collection; as it allows you to hear first-hand how Camella Lobo's band has progressed musically in a few short years. This three track 12" is her first new music since that excellent debut TOC LP, and finds Lobo working with Joshua Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv. A few words that come to mind when listening to this exquisitely produced record: ethereal, beautiful, immense, hypnotic, and incandescent. Few artists can wrench such emotion from such sparseness of sound. This records shows that Camella Lobo is one of them.

The Phantom - "Across The River, Beneath The Trees" (12:32)
The Phantom - "Europa" (11:33)
Sad City - "Limbo" (21:56)
Review: The 2nd part of the 4 part split (Schleissen) series welcomes rising stars of the experimental end of modern electronica, with Warsaw's The Phantom and Glagow's Sad City bringing a lush, Fourth World ambience to ErB002.

Emotional Response returns to the Schleissen series with another cross-European exploration of ambient minimalism, film sources, field recordings and fluid soundscapes to create an over-whelming album of beauty for the listener to simply let go and wash away to. This time the influences are softer, but still prevalent, with forbears Satie, Stockhausen, Reich, Cage, Russel, Cunningham, Toop and of course of Hassel and Eno all acknowledged and explored through structure and the gentle syncopation of melody or occasional rhythm. With a nod to the film works of Tangerine Dream (or is it Global Communcation?) The Phantom follows up his outstanding LP1 with a move further in to the ethereal. Working as one piece,
Across The River, Beneath The Trees and Europa go beyond the real train with their blissful, floating arrangements creating an atmospheric blanket that consumes you. This is matched by up and coming producer Sad City. With 2 recent EPs on Phonica's Special Editions series as well as his debut on Underwater Peoples, his offering, Limbo, shows an exemplary understanding of sound design, resulting in an immersive, panoramic 18 minutes of pure music. Ambience, drone and modulation interwine and slowly engulf the listener so, as the title suggests, the only option is to be still. A change from SchleiBen 1 then, ErB002 is gentler on the mind and ears, but still challenges you to stop and (un)listen.

Review: Oh Lord! These days there are even reissues of albums from a few years back on different labels! That just shows the state we're in right now: everybody's just vinyl hungry. Imre Kiss' 2013 cassette excursion on Farbwechsel, the aptly named Midnight Wave, is given the vinyl treatment by London powerhouse Lobster Theremin, and the artwork has been given a good makeover, too. Many of you are probably familiar with the release already, but this is the perfect joint if you're looking for house music that spans onto the bizarre and the abstract; you'll find nine tracks of meditative dancefloor delight and, as Ron Morelli would label it, it's certainly club music for shut ins. For fans of everything from Opal Tapes to Berceuse Heroique.

Review: The fourth and final edition of SchleiBen is an extra special one, bringing forth acollaborative project between Colin Potter of Nurse With Wound fame, Not Waving artist Alessio Natalizia and Brain Machine's Guido Zen. Furthermore the series ties with Dusseldorf remain, as Osnabruck based producer Niklas Rehme-Schluter lines the flip with the beautiful ambient touches of his Cass project. The two part efforts from Potter, Natalizia and Zen offer a perfect marriage of methods, with percussion hinting at and Techno, while the constant Drone influx and disintegration grab your attention, overlapping with rhythmic repetition deeper and deeper. The Cass contributions see tracks from the German artist's cassette only Hiding Place album presented on vinyl for the first time and fit snugly into the sonic ethos explored over the previous SchleiBen releases.

Review: Current scene favourite Nils Frahm teamed up with Icelandic multi-instrumentalist Olafur Arnalds on three breath taking excursions through lush ambient textures on "Stare" as a surprise release back in 2012 for label founder Robert Rath. "A1" features Frahm's entrancing irresistible melody over some gorgeous all-consuming strings and glacial soundscapes courtesy of Arnalds. "A2" with its heavenly, transcendental beauty has just got to be heard while "B1" explores darker territory with its excavating soundscapes accompanying the most hauntingly delicate cello notes. Exquisite!

Review: With a particularly expressive, adventurous approach to sound design and abstract composition, Luke Younger's Helm project has matured gracefully over the past seven years. He reaches his sixth album, and second for PAN, in fine fettle, matching eerie patience with studio flamboyance in a balance that few manage to successfully achieve. Olympic Mess moves from cloying hypnotism on the aptly titled "I Exist In A Fog" to unsettlingly spacious tension on "Often Destroyed", but rarely do the tracks idle for too long in one place. It's a pitfall of so much noise and drone music that Younger has side-stepped with ease on his latest effort.

Review: The legendary John Beltran returns with another masterpiece on Delsin. A master producer whose career has spanned everything from Detroit techno and electronica to Latin music, his attempt at ambient is equally well executed. The breath taking "Music for Machines" with its droning mechanical soundscape and beautiful transcending strings. "Orange Background" and its factory sounds accompanying a repetitive resonance. Beltran's emotive and sombre piano sound plays a large part and he does it tremendously on "Many Moments to Come" as well as the memorable "Love Suspended". All in all a brilliant effort and contender for one of the finest albums this year.

Lionsong (Mica Levi Kareokieijd remix) (8:33)
Review: Off the back of her new Vulnicura LP, Bjork has already received the remix treatment from a number of artists, namely Lotic, Untold, and now Mica Levi. Unlike many of the other commissions, Mica's self-styled Kareokieijd transformation of "Lionsong" takes a much darker path, and can essentially be seen as an electro acoustic cover version. The track is vast and cinematic, cerebral and eye-opening, where strings gather momentum only to be engulfed in a sea of deep, luscious atmospherics. A fitting remix to Bjork's inimitable style.

Review: Recorded last year at Rome's contemporary art museum, MAXXI is as graceful and noble as the environment in which it was created. "Intro" sets the tone for this work with its understated pulses and chilling synths. This leads into the deeper, more textured depths of "Sonia Danza" and the aptly named "Dreamscape Generation", which features warbling streams and rivulets of sound, squelches and chatter, like a moist riverbank on a spring morning. "Orange Steps" and "Scintille" are serene and more reflective, after this veritable flurry of musical activity. The release finishes with "Max", a cover of a piece by Italian composer Paolo Conte, but its chimes and layered textures are unmistakably Neel and Dozzy's.

Review: Earthen Sea goes by the name of Jacob Long when he's out of the studio, and out in the real world. This is for good reason, too, as his alias is just about as dreamy and hazy as one can get without taking a heavy load of tranquillisers. He's back on Ital's Lover's Rock label - the man himself has featured on Workshop, just in case you didn't know - with eight pieces of foolproof electronic psychedelia. "Entrance" sets the seen with cinematic drones, and opens up the doors to a rugged and loose collection of pseudo house tracks. Not really for the dancefloor, but equally not tame enough to be listened to on headphones, Earthen Sea's mood is energetic yet melancholic. Ambient and abstraction is mixed up with steely percussion, and locked grooves. We love this stuff, it's for the dreamers...

Review: San Fran-based multi-instrumentalist Jerfre-Cantu Ledesma pops up on Mexican Summer with an absolute peach of an LP! He's has been making music for no less than twenty years now, and has released on everything from Type to Last foundation and of course, his own excellent Root Strata label which has seen releases from the likes of Oneohtrix Point Never, Keith Fullerton Whitman and Grouper. A Year With 13 Moons is a 16-track journey into the depths of electronic gorgeousity, where mammoth-like waves of feedback splurge onto more docile soundscapes. Tracks like "Love After Love" or "Interiors", although dark and foreboding in places, retain an element of peace and tranquillity, something which Ledesma is just so damn good at. It's music for the open mind, an adventure into the most treacherous of calm waters.

Review: The Serbian representative of retirement synthesiser success Abul Mogard has a new release to impart which comes forth on Walls' own label Ecstatic. As with previous Mogard releases on VCO Records, there is a quiet, slow-burning intensity to this work, gently unfurling monstrous tones in a harmonious swell that manages to be both comforting and unsettling in the same stroke. With subtle processing at the heart of his sound, Mogard once again demonstrates just how powerful the right combination of signal paths can be at evoking strong emotions, using the most glacial sonic gestures possible as a throwdown to an impatient age.

Review: When it comes to a quantity of quality ambient music, the Further label has set itself up to be a major port of call. The Dose LP was the second by co-founder Chloe Harris aka Raica, originally released on tape in 2012, and even though full-lengths on Digitalis and Gretta Cottage Woodpile followed, this still remains one of her best. Synthesised textures and low end pulses mixed with fluttering clusters of busy sound design and effects make Dose a dreamy and at times surreal listen, with tracks like "Harchone" the most challenging. It's album opener "Satmor", "Slep_Non", "Watr Dragn", "Skrt" and the concluding "Entridam" that will appeal most to ambient enthusiasts.

Review: Southern Lord boss, noise-head, sound sculptor and all-around electronic master Stephen O'Malley drops a truck-load of abstract atmospherics on the Demdike Stare's self-names imprint. Guides is the result of O'Malley being approached to try his hand at orchestral composition at the behest of noted pianist Frederic Blondy on behalf of the 35-piece improv orchestra ONCEIM. O'Malley proceeded to develop a piece based on long sustained notes that merge into a 35 minute piece, somewhat sadistically requiring string and woodwind players to hold notes for minutes at a time. Sinister swirls of noise blend seamlessly with sparse rattles of percussion and culminate into a spine-chilling backdrop of hollow drones. It's the master doing what he does best. Recommended.
