Review: Jazz-wise deep house and downtempo producer Hanna has a string of fine albums to his name stretching back to the tail end of the '90s. Bless, though, is his first full-length since 2008, and sees the Cleveland, Ohio man transfer to Theo Parrish's legendary Sound Signature imprint. Each of the album's ten tracks comes dripping in hazy, late night soul, as Hanna smoothly shuffles between hazy nu-jazz explorations and various strains of sensual deep house. For the DJs there are plenty of floor-friendly moments, while the inclusion of a string of groovier downtempo workouts should please the home listening posse.

Review: Robert Hood's Floorplan alias has been a real hit over the years. Not content with captivating audiences for two decades with his minimal-futurist hypnotism on M-Plant, Floorplan explored his love of sampling, bringing back the vibe of early noughties DJ tools that looped up funk and disco classics for infectious dancefloor dynamics. The Victorious LP is the project's second full length since 2013's Paradise and is co-produced by his daughter Lyric. It features the absolutely massive "Tell You No Lie" which works those loops from the 1977 disco classic "Lovin' You Is Really My Game" by Brainstorm to full effect.

Review: British duo Raime are back with the first album since 2012's brilliant Quarter Turns A Living Line and their signature style of dark ambience and haunting imaginary soundtracks which incorporate jungle, dub and post-punk influences into the mix also. The album is said to be largely influenced by their side project Moin which incorporates rock and metal influences too. According to Blackest Ever Black "the DNA of dub-techno, garage/grime and post-hardcore rock music spliced into sleek and predatory new forms." Highlights include the moody subtractive rock of "Dialling In, Falling Out", the dub and post punk crossover of "Dead Heat" and the brooding mood-lighting of "Cold Cain".

Review: This is the latest volume in Jeff Mills' epic Sleeper Wakes sci-fi series, and sees the Motor City techno legend musing on the "cosmic menace" that is the imaginary Free Fall Galaxy (or Britain post-Brexit, perhaps). It's a typically downbeat, atmospheric and evocative affair, with Mills blurring the boundaries between sytnthesizer-heavy movie soundtrack work, high-minded ambient, Radiophonic Workshop style electronic experimentation, deep and otherworldly techno, intense acid and, of course, throbbing 4/4 dancefloor pressure. As usual with Mills work in this series, the emphasis is on instrumental story telling, with the ebb and flow of the album's construction evoking mental images of confusion and paranoia amongst the endless darkness.

Review: Despite now being 25 years into their career, Plaid duo Ed Handley and Andy Turner show no signs of showing up. If The Digging Remedy - their 11th studio set - is anything to go by, their instincts remain as sharp as ever. They've always been capable of creating magical music that contrasts experimental electronic rhythms with picturesque melodies and mood-enhancing sounds, and The Digging Remedy is full of the stuff. Intriguingly, many of the tracks seem deeper and more subdued than previous explorations, with clear ambient and neo-classical influences amongst the classic electro and IDM flavours you'll find on the album's more up-tempo moments.

Review:  Such has been the rise of Marquis Hawkes in recent times that this debut album must mark as one of the most anticipated house sets of 2016. Happily, Social Housing is a superb showcase not only for Hawkes' talents, but also his understanding of house music in its' many myriad forms. The album does include, of course, a sprinkling of jackin' workouts, but these are outnumbered by such thrilling chunks of loved-up positivity as the Tiger & Woods style loop funk of "Fantasy", the Theo Parrish-ish jazz fuzziness of "Summer Memory", and the cheeky, Todd Edwards style cut-up garage of "Something In Yr Head" [sic]. The album's most potent moment, though, is "I'm So Glad", a collaboration with Jocelyn Brown that already ranks among 2016's most potent tunes.

Review: From Cuba, Mala heads south for another mystic adventure in international cross-pollination on Mirrors, the Deep Medi man's latest LP-length bubbler for Brownswood. Fusing inspirations, energies, talents and techniques from Peru - and working with some of the country's most respected musicians - it's another immersive body of work that genuinely sounds like no other. From the pensive tribal march of "Cusco Street Scene" to the shimmering twangs and dusty, languid claps of "Zapateo" by way of demented insistency of "Looney" and the muddy cosmic textures of "The Calling", Mala has once again immersed himself so deeply into a culture and musical discourse that he not only speaks it fluently but has added to its rich vernacular. Vinyl was invented for albums like this.

Review: To date, Rhys "Microlith" Celeste has delivered two cracking 12" singles for Sheffield's Central Processing Unit label, so hopes are naturally high for his debut full-length. Happily, Dance With Me is a bit of a doozy. Sitting somewhere between the underwater intensity of Drexciya, the cheery melodiousness of Artificial Intelligence era Warp releases, and the spacey sound of vintage British intelligent techno, the album bristles with bubbly acid lines, ambient chords, punchy drum machine rhythms, and heady, Motor City inspired melodies. It's mostly dancefloor-ready, but also works as an album that you can enjoy to from start to finish. You can't really ask for any more from a debut album.

Review: Four years on from his second album, 2, Hospital's go-to Belgian bass connoisseur Netsky returns with his third long player, the cunningly-titled 3. Boris Daenen has the fine art of the album down to a tee and there is a real sense of occasion about this 12 track epic. Last year's festival favourite "Rio", the Digital Farm Animals-featuring, Brazilian DNB-style is a fine example of the Netksy sound right now and it features prominently here, a beacon to coax people in and experience the further delights of 3 with Chromeo and Emeli Sande also among the cast of contributing names. 3 is energetic, brash, a reflection of its producer's discography, and yet something new entirely simultaneously.

Review: American ambient producer Michael Mantra sadly passed away a few years back, having played a vital role in the development of vibrational and sonic therapy. His theories hugely influenced Echospace duo Stephen Hitchell and Rod Modell, who became close friends with Mantra during the final years of his life. Here they pay tribute to him, creating a piece in three parts inspired by his theories and production methods. It's an all-analogue, drone-influenced soundscape full of dubbed-out textures, meditative white noise and subtle melodic shifts, created in part by using a variety of obscure electronic instruments and experimental production techniques. Sea Shell City is a fitting tribute to Mantra's work, and one of Modell and Hitchell's finest ambient works.

Review: Devon duo Fred V and Grafix has been slowly building their career since 2009, with 2014 debut album Recognise thrusting them towards the higher echelons of the drum & bass community. Oxygen is their sophomore set, and builds on the attractive, soulful and melodious liquid D&B sound showcased on its' predecessor. A variety of vocalists - many with soft and folksy voices - take it in turns to add their distinctive tones to the duo's rolling rhythms, dreamy chords, shimmering synthesizers and mood-enhancing melodies. While there are plenty of tried-and-tested dancefloor numbers present - see the skittering "Rainbow Road" and radio-friendly "Living In The Past" - the album's most attractive feature is its' cozy, home listening feel.

Review: After he became a father for the first time last year, former Studio man Dan Lissvik began jamming out tracks in his home studio after his partner and newborn baby went to sleep. These recordings, largely created with a limited amount of instruments and electronic hardware, can now be heard on Midnight, his second solo full-length, and first since 2008. It's a hugely entertaining and positive set, featuring cheery tracks that join the dots between grinning lo-fi disco, dub disco, Scandolearic electronics, and the kind of glistening, sun-kissed Balearica that regularly emerged from the Studio, erm, studio. Each of the eight tracks is a work of loose, life-affirming beauty, with Lissvik wisely offering a good balance between dancefloor shufflers and hazy downtempo grooves.

Sequential Sleep (Modular mix)
Review: Echospace man Stephen Hitchell has been devoting much time to his Variant project over the last couple of years, releasing no less than nine, straight-to-tape explorations in 2015 alone. Here, he continues his seemingly endless voyage into the deep space where ambient, sound design and dub techno meet. Sequential Sleep is a double-disc affair, with each CD boasting one long take on the fluid, spacey, becalmed and hazy title track. The differences between the two are subtle, but certainly noticeable: the slightly longer Granular Mix (hosted on disc one) feels more fluid and spaced-out, while the Modular Mix (presumably titled in honour of Hitchell's chosen production method) is bolder and louder, with more distinctively layered electronic textures.

Review: Is there anything Will "Quantic" Holland can't do? Certainly, the multi-instrumentalist has successfully turned his hand to all manner of global styles over the years, invariably hugely successfully. 1000 Watts is the third full-length from his occasional Flowering Inferno project, which sees him blend the dub-wise riddims of the Caribbean, with the humid horns and tropical instrumentation of South American music. It's a predictably entertaining, well-made and immaculately produced set, with Holland calling on a range of collaborators (most notably U-Roy, Alice Russell and Christopher Ellis). Sure, there are few surprises, but the project's parameters are firmly set. What's offered is undeniably attractive, as if Lee 'Scratch' Perry had spent a week producing bands in Bogota.

Review: Former Panorama Bar resident and local Berlin fixture Cassy Britton presents her first full length release since giving up her residency and leaving Europe's clubbing capital for the sunny shores of Los Angeles. The Donna LP features some dusty classic house sounds of the deeper spectrum, as heard previously on her eponymous imprint, Uzuri or Perlon sporadically over the last 10 years and her great vocals which veer from spoken word, haunting/monotone to high pitched diva moves are a constant throughout. Highlights for us were the uplifting deep disco of "All I Do", the soulful deep funk on her cover of Prince's "Strange Relationship" or the emotive yet tough techno of "Move".

Review: The Dark Side of the Moog series has always been one of ambient music's best-kept secrets. Launched by former Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel man Klaus Schulze, and German ambient legend Pete Namlook in 1993, the series eventually ran to 11 albums. Given that original copies of many of the sets now go for silly money online, this ongoing series of boxed reissues is a godsend. This third (and final) installment contains the final three albums in the series, all of which were amongst the duo's finest collaborative work, plus a sparkling 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound edition of volume XI. There's also a fifth bonus disc, containing a typically epic, improvised live performance, recorded in Hamburg.

Review: The Erised first made their presence felt on Med School back in early 2015, releasing the tasty 10" In My Car. Here, the six-piece band unveils their debut full length excursion, a deep, woozy and evocative collection of cuts that perfectly showcases their distinctive sound. Largely downtempo and hazy in outlook, the 14 tracks on Room 414 blend the heavy bass and ricocheting percussion hits of dubstep, with moody chords, twinkling electronics, paranoid textures, and the emotion-rich vocals of front woman Sonya Sukhorukova. For the most part, it sounds like a contemporary update on trip-hop, with production tricks borrowed from a wide range of dancefloor styles.

Review: Jim Jupp aka Belbury Poly has been running the Ghost Box imprint for over ten years now and, from the sound it, he has no intention of stopping his lust for sleek, spectral electronica with a vintage feel. New Ways Out is a perfect companion to the rest of his catalogue, and the sounds within are workable in more than one situation - on your headphones, on a beach, in a car, or even in a corner of some hedonistic bar. The ten track on this LP offer the listener a 360 degree experience, a wide-eyed foray into the weird and wonderful mind of this multi-talented producer who seems to stretch the meaning of electronica to its very limits.
