87th Off Broadway - "Instant Replay" (2:53)
Larry Sanders - "I’m In Love" (2:43)
Review: Ace's introduces the Soul Harmony label with a thrilling discovery from Golden State Recorders. The 87th Off Broadway, hailing from Seaside, California, recorded a series of tracks in April 1972, with arrangements by Los Angeles' Rene Hall. These sessions, featuring the group's self-penned songs, remained unheard for decades. 'Instant Replay is the final track from these sessions to be released, following previous funk releases on Ace's BGP label. The group later evolved into Welfare, who recorded 'What About The Child' (under the name Gold) for the MRC label in 1977. The intricate harmony and high-quality production of 'Instant Replay' have already garnered praise on the Lowrider scene. The music of Larry Sanders has seen the soar among collectors, capturing the essence of a summer romance with his lush, harmonious sound.

AkizzBeatzz - "I'm An African" (3:29)
Lego Edit - "Sahara Adventures" (Lego re-edit) (4:58)
Review: AkizzBeatzz and Lego Edit join forces to mutually reinforce what they both do best: making disco edits and reworks of classic funk, soul and Afrobeat, and occassionally offering up the odd original track. The 12" 'African Groove' is a downtempo and weighty meditation on what it means to hail from the continent, with Akizz' A-side 'I'm An African' playfully laying down a diasporic big beat excursion, replete with regional instrumentation and defiant political vocal samples. Lego Edit's 'Sahara Adventures', meanwhile, works a chugging beat around a central algaita line.

Lindigo - "Tany Be" (Alma Negra dub) (8:55)
Review: For the latest excursion on their eponymous label, the Alma Negra crew is in full remix mode, in turn reworking tracks from contemporary Maloya combo Lindigo and lesser-known French Afro artist Salem Tradition. Their vocal and dub interpretations of the former's "Tany Be" are particularly special. While the dub is little more than a killer spaced-out percussion track with added delay-laden vocal and instrumental snippets, the "remix" is a near perfect fusion of woozy, spacey deep house and traditional maloya - all half-chanted vocals, snaking sax lines and warm bass. Those looking for heavy and druggy, kick-drum driven tribal Afro-house vibes should head straight for the remix of Salem Tradition's "Kabare", which is little more than loads of drums with an evocative vocal atop.

Kylie Auldist & Lincoln Room - "Party At My Place" (3:27)
Review: "I'm like a monkey with cocaine" goes the vocal on the opening tune here but that conjures up images of quite a riotous scene. In fact, the music is superbly seductive, cool and calm, with low slung disco funk, lush cosmic chords and a laidback, almost aloof vocal all soothing the soul and making for some nice dance floor intimacy. After that collab between Kylie Auldist and Skinny Dipp, Kylie hooks up with Lincoln Room for 'Party At My Place' which has an odds school instrumental disco feel embellished with low slung grooves and lovely claps.

Review: Get yourself geared up for festival season with some fierce party starters certified with the Glitterbox stamp. Melvo Baptiste leads the charge with 'Sweat', a sizzling disco house stomper with Dames Brown giving the biggest diva energy on her show-stopping vocal. Lovebirds bring unbridled joy on the Philly string swoon and slinky b-line funk of 'Burn It Down', while Art Of Tones & Inaya Day keep it peak time on the sassy strutter 'Give My Love'. Review: Incognito Trax is back to drop a fifth bit of heat with this new and heavily limited 12". Once more it is a various arts affair that explores a disco tinged brand of house and tech. BB opens up with 'Zap Revelation' which has lovely vocal coos over raw beats that hark back to early Chicago house. LV's 'Faccia Gialla' has a Latin feel thanks to the lead horns and the percussive grooves and LV's 'Dream On' then goes deep with indie vocals over guitar laced grooves. Macchianera serves up the final two jams, first solo on the loose limbed 'Alle' then with Mattia C on 'Quack Quack' which is a more jazzy jam.

Lou Rawls - "See You When I Git There" (A Tom Moulton mix) (9:39)
Review: During the latter stages of the "Philly Soul" era, New York remixer Tom Moulton delivered a string of inspired, DJ friendly reworks for the Philadelphia International label. For proof, check this fine selection of classic Moulton mixes for the storied imprint. Check first his version of Archie Bell and the Drells' "Where Will You Go When The Party's Over", which he brilliantly teases out and increases in intensity over nine spellbinding minutes. The funkier flex of People's Choice's "Jam, Jam, Jam (All Night Long)" is a sweaty, low-down treat, while the Teddy Pendergrass rework is a soaring disco classic in the Philly Soul style. Best of all, though, is the string-drenched disco celebration that is his mix of Lou Rawls' "See You When I Git There".

Dance Till U Can't (6:59)
Review: If you're a serious disco and boogie head, you need this record in your life. It's significant, too, being the first original track from Leroy Burgess's legendary Logg act - one of the finest disco/boogie outfits of all time - since 1981. In its original form (B2), 'Dance Till You Can't' is a sublime slab of updated, house-era boogie full of superb instrumentation, wigglingacid lines, cheerful piano stabs and a typically inspired lead vocal from Burgess, who remains disco's most talented male vocalist. If you're after a more straight-up, classic Logg style boogie sound, Marc Mac's EP-opening 'Main Mix' is the version to opt for (and genuinely brilliant), while the broken beat style 'Broken Boogie Mix' will appeal to those who love Dego and Kaidi Tatham's joint productions.

Review: This is the first in a two-part series from Canopy which highlights the legendary Beninese supergroup T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo, who have put out over 250 releases. Despite personnel changes, founder Clement Melome remained the band's guiding force. The title track translates as "My Fire Will Not Go Out" and has been remastered and reissued for the first time here. It's a fusion of soukous, disco and funk that features driving bass, triumphant horns and cosmic synths. Remixes by Jose Marquez and Sol Power All-Stars blend tradition with modern production for a fine package.

Dre's Night (4:13)
Review: France's faves Battle Weapons deliver two heady new edits, only for those ready. On the A comes an ingenious, probably never-done-before, almost laughably why-hasn't-anyone-else-ever-thought-of-this-until-now breakbeat rendition of Peter Bjorn & John's 'The Young Folks'. To be frank, they've not done much besides beef up the backbeat a little, but a simple sprucing up is sometimes all a tune needs. On the flip comes a phattened version of 'Forgot About Dre' mashed up with the Azzido Da Bass UK garage classic 'Dooms Night', also produced to hilariously, surreally arresting effect.

Review: Jose Marquez has long been a member of the Basic Fingers family. Since making his first contribution to the acclaimed re-edit imprint back in 2011, he's regularly delivered tasty reworks of Latin jams and African gems. Here he returns with two more killer Latin cuts piled high with South American percussion. "Quinto Y Bongo" smartly combines killer drums and vocals from an unknown, stripped-back salsa record with the sort of subtle, spacey synths and thickset bassline you'd normally find on a high calibre deep house record. "Canto Del Caribe" is, if anything, even heavier, with the combination of sturdy house kicks, dense Latin percussion and chanted vocals creating an intoxicating mood.

This cheeky 7" actually features two of the standout tunes from their equally essential 2019 album Aimez Ces Aires. 'El Nino' is a a real summer classic, with falsetto vocals singing about how hot it is with big horn leads and funky drums getting that party started. 'Fontaine (Drink Drink)' is a deeper cut with xylophone sounds, hand claps and a warm, organic feel that is again set to get temperatures rising this summer.

Review: A limited collection of vocal mixes, instrumentals and edits of an eclectic mix of gangster rap, hip-hop-funk and old skool from the '70s and '80s golden era of hip-hop. Featuring a vocal feature from a fresh faced Snoop Dogg on Dr Dre's 'Nuthin' But A G Thang', and Kool Moe Dee's underappreciated tongue-in-cheek 'Go See The Doctor' - both with accompanying instrumentals on Side B. Accessories to these two hits are the instrumental to 2005 R&B banger 'Just Dance' by Lenisha Nelson, who unfortunately never broke through to a mass audience, and the 1974 debut song 'Do It ('Till You're Satisfied)' from the New York funk group Brooklyn Transit Express (B. T. Express). A unique mix of throwbacks to American artists during the peak moments of their respective genres, and the highest quality instrumentals you might ever get from these songs.

Review: Nick "Linkwood" Moore and Euan Fryer established East Coast Love Affair with the idea of making it the "Athens of the North house band". They've recently released a slew of singles, of which this sparkling, soulful cover version of Eddie Kendricks' favourite 'Date With The Rain', featuring the silky voice of lover's rock legend Peter Hunningale, is arguably the most revelatory. Rich in leisurely but ear-catching drum machine patters, warming bass and spakrling synth sounds, the duo's full vocal cover version sits somewhere between lover's rock, street soul and mid-80s electrofunk. Fittingly, it comes backed with 'Dub With The Rain', a delay-laden instrumental take that subtly showcases the depth and beauty of the pair's backing track while also adding a little extra low-end grunt. Simply sublime.

Review: Eddie C met fellow Berlin-based artist LJ Simon a couple of years back. The pair bonded over their joint love of "boogie-funk" (as Soul Clap put it) and soon the Canadian was in the studio remixing a couple of Simon's collaborations with vocalist Idriss. Now presented on this "45" as a vinyl-only release, those two mixes are well worth checking. On side A you'll find 'I Wonna Know' [sic], a delicious fusion of Soul II Soul style street soul, tactile boogie synths and grandiose orchestral disco samples topped off by a fine lead vocal. The flipside dub of 'Rendez-Vous' is arguably even better - a jaunty boogie-reggae affair piled high with colourful synth sounds, echoing vocal snippets and toe-tapping beats.

And while an increasing sanitation of sound might often be associated with most generic "neos", Ernie & The Family Mckone prove this wrong on their latest 7", 'That Girl', whose sound is as tight yet live as ever. Fronted by Boogie Back label owner, singer, producer and guitarist Ernie Mckone (aka. "The Great Ernesto"), this record is a family affair in aspirate vocals and finger-clicking beat bounces. The A-side hears Mckone aim to relieve a lover from pain by keeping a secret, and the B slangs lower on a near-variation of the same beat, albeit the lyrics carry a deep saudade.

Review: As Tangent, one of London's cherished underground institutions, marks a decade of unforgettable nights, it does so with a meticulously curated compilation on Mr Bongo. The new release is more than a celebratory gesture; it's a sonic anthology reflecting the essence of a decade spent at the heart of the city's underground scene. Curated by Tangent's own John Gomez and Nick the Record, the compilation presents a blend of rare and dancefloor-ready tracks that have defined their parties over the years. This isn't merely a collection of past hits; it's a celebration of the edits that transformed these tracks into Tangent anthems. Alongside remastered reissues, the CD edition includes three exceptional edits by Nick, John, and Dan Tyler of the Idjut Boys, each crafted with the kind of attention to detail that only years of club experience can bring. Nick's collaboration with Dan Tyler on Leo Basel's 'Quelle Drole De Vie' breathes new life into a 1987 remix, honing in on the standout elements of the original. The result is a vibrant, French boogie-infused track that promises to elevate any dancefloor. John and Dan's rework of Love Isaacs' 'Surprise Surprise' offers a cosmic twist on 80s electro-funk, extending the grooves and adding a highlife touch that enhances the track's dancefloor potential. The compilation's crowning piece is Nick's edit of Rick Asikpo and Afro Fusion's 'Let's Get High'. This 12-minute reimagining takes the energetic climax of the original and expands it into a frenetic, cosmic journey, showcasing synthesised jazz-funk in its most exhilarating form. This release is not just about revisiting old favourites; it's about acknowledging the transformative power of edits and the unique role Tangent has played in shaping London's underground music scene over the past decade.

Let's Dance Volume 4 is another various artists affair that launches with James Greenwood & Aniello's feel-good 'Look Of Love' which has it all - the sweet female vocal, the florid strings, the rolling bassline and big brass leads. Scruscru & Los Protos's 'Corason' brings some Latin flavours with a more deep and seductive groove and Jkriv and Love Drop offer up two b-side jams packed with soul and irresistible rhythms that effervesce with uplifting vibes.

Review: Following up some great edits by the likes of Delay Lama, Atoz and Wandervogel, the Lego Edit 7" limited series returns with one shot per side here, each offering a beautifully arranged, string heavy backdrop of low slung funk. On the A side, Hansi respectfully resplices a bumpin' and super soulful underground goodie on "Party Is A Gruv", while over on the flip you've got a timeless R&B anthem that's paired perfectly with a love of the wacky backy on "Baci Baci" (Lego ReFunk) by the boss man himself Lego Edit.

It's Just Begun (Hansi remix) (4:22)
Jungle Groove (Lego re-edit) (5:27)
Review: The Italian disco dons at Legofunk have another couple of belters for us here. As usual, both sides of this 7" feature an edit. The first is by Hansi who flips the well known 'It's Just Begun' into a driving and funky rhythm with rolling bass. It's a chunky one that never lets up. On the reverse, 'Jungle Groove' gets a re-edit from the in house Lego team and it becomes a loopy affair that teases the drop for ages. When it comes, big chords and raw, yelping vocals add extra fuel to the fire. Both are highly impactful.

Alan Strani - "Tension Salsable" (edit) (4:58)
Review: Maledetta Discoteca closes out its year with this special blue vinyl featuring a mix of brilliant Italo disco artists. They all hail from Italy and Argentina and are editing originals that span disco, electro, proto-house and more. Hararis' 'Si No Pagan' is the first under the scalpel and is a funky cut with raw drums. Lance's 'Yo Quiero A Lucy' is a more slowed down and seductive sound with 80s synths, Marta Paradise's 'Calling' (edit) is a direct and sugar synth laced house stomper and Alan Strani's 'Tension Salsable' brings things to a closer with a nice stomping disco grove with mysterious synths and lush percussion.

Review: An original "clash single" featuring two Alan Toussaint teammates goes head-to-head on one northern soul classic on this special 45. Willie Harper's superior and original unreleased recording of Alan Toussaint dance classic "Here Comes the Hurt Again" which is made available on 7" vinyl for the first time goes up against Lee Dorsey's version of the same track. Whatever side you pick, both remastered recordings will take Soul revellers back to the heyday of the Northern Soul scene where the All-Nighter's dancefloor was the only place to hear the best, rarest and breaking sounds spun by the leading DJs. Why Can't We Be Lovers (4:04)
Don't Leave Me (3:15)
Review: Largely known for writing some of the biggest and influential Motown hits, the Holland brothers and Lamont Dozier were just as canny at laying down their own gems as they were for the many acts who benefited from their writing (The Supremes, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye and stacks more) "Why Can't We Be Lovers" (known most famously for its Chain Reaction cover) is a powerful love song with full orchestration and a massive backing vocal presence while "Don't Leave Me" struts with a much more bare-boned dynamic where Dozier's dulcets, striking piano and emphatic backing vocals do all the driving. This one won't be leaving your side for a long time...

Seegweed Edits Part 2

Willie Hutch - "Slick"
Los Monequitos De Matanzas - "Lo Que Dice El Abacua"
Lou Bond - "To The Establishment"
Review: GAMM waste little time in dropping the second round of Scandodelic edits from man like Seegweed who presents a trio of tweaks that straddle the lines between disco, beatdown Latin and heavenly soul. The familiar tones of Sir Willie Hutch open proceedings in richly orchestral disco style with a tweak of the iconic singer's "Slick" lifted from the OST to The Mack starring a certain Richard Pryor. Seegweed's main embellishment concerns adding some neat percussive touches as the brass heavy arrangement makes any major surgery redundant. Alongside this is a lolloping expansion of Afro Cuban act Los Monequitos De Matanzas which is caked in sonic dust. Do check the flip for Seegweed's take on Lou Bond that adds a delightful broken bump to the singer's psychedelic soul masterpiece "To The Establishment".

The L'Amour Disco mix rounds out the package, paying homage to classic r&b, disco and house sounds with a polished nod to the 80s. Both versions offer a unique flavour, making this release a stunning collection that caters to diverse musical tastes. Review: Teddy Powell and Zee Desmondes are The Jack Moves, a contemporary disco and hip hop outfit who here link with unknown newbies The People Of Newark and Larry Hamm for this tidy new 7" on Star Creature. 'Horror Games' has a squelchy synth bass line that carries the loose drum work and bustling methane of background vocals and found sounds. A lead singer takes charge up top as various chatting crowds play out in the background. It's a busy tune that also comes as an instrumental for those who prefer the focus to be on the well crafted drums and bass.

While we'd argue that neither of the tracks featured on this first "Rare Grooves" seven-inch release is particularly hard to find, there's no denying that both are stone cold classics that should be in every DJ's collection. On the A-side there's a chance to admire The Jackson Sisters' superb 1973 proto-disco sing-along "I Believe in Miracles", a Clavinet-sporting anthem whose stabbing orchestral refrain is one of the most familiar of all time (and much used by doubling-up hip-hop DJs). Over on the flip you'll find Laura Lee's laidback deep funk gem "Crumbs Off The Table", a 1972 B-side that later became something of an anthem on London's 1980s rare groove scene.

All raw and loopy, it's a fine twist on a well known classic. Flip for two cuts from Horses-affiliate Laura Ingalls as she puts the EQ back into equine with two deeper dug edits. George Duke's "Party Down" gets a pumping, thumping, filtered disco twist while Roy Ayers gets an equally sweaty edit. Tasty.

Now Kalita have done the right thing and got hold of the release for a much needed repress, and it's highly likely this jam will become a staple for anyone with a taste for African grooves of all shapes and sizes. On the B side of this reissue "Cameroun Airline" gets a tasteful edit treatment from the trusted hands (and ears) of Nik Weston from Mukatsuku Records.

Review: For their latest trick, Soul Flip duo Aldo Vanucci and Del Gazeebo [sic] have turned their attention to classic cuts from Lee Dorsey and Gladys Knight and the Pips. It's the latter's rare cut "If You Ever Get Your Hands On Love" that gets the scalpel treatment first, with the pair cutting up and looping the opening piano riff before extending the Motown style song's stomping groove and inspired vocals to better suit modern dancefloors. On the flip it's all about their take on Lee Dorsey's 1970 song "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley", a DJ-friendly version that sneakily extends key instrumental passages to make the track well over a minute longer than the original. Given that Dorsey's version is arguably too short, we think it's a much-needed adjustment.

You might not be familiar with La Famille - a short-lived group established by jazz guitarist Alan Weekes, whose members also included then future Soul 2 Soul singer Caron Wheeler and a pre-fame Cleveland Watkiss - but in 'Dancer', they made one of the loveliest jazz-funk/boogie crossover records of the early 1980s. Originally a white label-only release and near impossible to find since, the record has long been crying out for a reissue. It has all the ingredients you'd expect - squelchy synth-bass, soulful vocals, leisurely jazz guitars, drum machine beats and an overriding sense of musical sweetness - and is presented in equally essential vocal and instrumental mix variations.

Review: La Pregunta was a short lived project in the late 70s and early 80s. 1978's 'Shangri La' on GBP Crescendo was their biggest tune and so is the one that gets the new reissue here by US label Undercover Brother. It is the sort of soaring, glossy, and lush disco sound that defined the ear. The strings do plenty of work up top, but the smooth female vocals also carry plenty of emotive soul over the fat synth bass and nice loose-limbed drum work. The tune is pressed to both sides here for those most active DJs.
