Review: This is a bold, progressive funk album from one of the genre's masters in Isaac Hayes. Although Hayes who was rooted in r&b was often overlooked in favour of prog-rock bands like Emerson, Lake and Palmer, his music was just as expansive and expressive across his career. This album served as the soundtrack for Hayes' first major film role and perfectly matches the gritty, exaggerated tone of the movie. Over time, its tracks were reimagined and sampled and influenced works from Geto Boys to Quentin Tarantino films, which has ensured it a lasting legacy in both cinema and music history.

Review: US jazz drummer Roy Haynes' 1971 album was originally recorded in New York for Bob Shad's Mainstream Records. Wewantsounds has now secured the rights to a full reissue that is likely to ensure it connects with a new generation. The album features a stellar lineup with Hannibal Marvin Peterson, George Adams, Teruo Nakamura and Lawrence Killian blending jazz funk and spiritual jazz with Haynes' powerful drumming at the forefront. This is the the first vinyl release since 1971 and it retains the original gatefold artwork, plus first-generation photos, and also includes the bonus track 'Roy's Tune' and a two-page insert with new liner notes by Kevin Le Gendre.

Review: Chicago was a hotbed for talent in the 1970s (well, it always has been and always will be, to be honest) and one of the groups to emerge at that time was Heaven & Earth, a vital soul vocal collective. They released four high-quality albums and this one, 'I Can't Seem To Forget You', was the first on Clarence Johnson's G.E.C. Label. It is packed with super sweet vocals and Dwight Dukes' lush falsetto and has never before been reissued. This version from the good folks at P-VINE has an extra bonus cut 'Promises,' which has previously only been available as a single from 1975.

Review: Finnish fusion five-piece the Heikki Sarmanto Quintet recorded and released their sole album, Counterbalance, way back in 1971. Brought together by bandleader and Rhodes electric piano wizard Heikki Sarmanto, the band burned brightly briefly before vanishing into obscurity. Svart Records has - wisely, given its cult status - decided to reissue the album, this time on translucent green vinyl and accompanied by extensive liner notes. It remains a unique and hugely enjoyable album that joins the dots between warm and largely laidback contemporary jazz, jazz-funk, more pastoral folk-jazz fusion, and more high-octane, spiritual jazz-inspired improvisations. It also boasts some genuinely life-affirming flute and guitar solos amongst the rubbery double bass, loose-limbed rhythms and Sarmanto's inspired keys-work.

Review: Joe Henderson's synergistic 1973 sax record first came to Milestone Records amid the musician's long and storied fusion-crossing-into-free-jazz period. With a Warholian front cover and a punch-packing cast of talents behind him - from Larry Willis to James Blood Ulmer to Dave Holland to Jack DeJohnette - this is indeed a milestone, charging terminals of funk, blue jazz and Afrobeat, and crossing into both the spiritual and the atonal. Mid-record high-point 'Song For Sinners' almost certainly takes after Sun Ra with its trembling saxophones above a distended groove, while 'Turned Around' is a lot freer and easygoing and yet far more determined in the rhythm section.

Review: Hiatus Kaiyote are amazing - plain and simple. The Melbourne-based group have risen to well-deserved stardom with their expertly crafted, multi-layered slow jams backing the sensational vocal stylings of lead singer Nai Palm. Since their 2013 debut 'Tawk Tomahawk', the group has been sampled by The Carters, Drake and Anderson .Paak, undoubtedly for their smooth genre-bending and soulful sound reminiscent of Erykah Badu - who has since become a big fan. The two singles, 'Make Friends' and 'Everything's Beautiful' are rich in depth and have some of Palm's best vocal performances to date - they belt out some crazy riffs on the latter track, a cut oozing in groove. Pressed on indie exclusive marbled disc, so support independent vinyl companies and get a beautiful pressing in return.
