I'm Comin' Home To You
Whole Woman
Review: Australian soul singer Stella Angelico has been at it since 2012, and now, signaling yet more to come, we hear a fresh 7" documenting her work with Cookin' On 3 Burners, a Melbourne-based band whose specialism is Hammond organ funk and soul. On the A we've got 'I'm Comin' Home To You', a nimble pop-soul of impeccable quality, expressing the joy of a long-awaited return. The B-sider, 'Whole Woman', is more of a monologue and slow jam, expressing the joy of staying fully embodied and grounded.

Connie Austin - "Ball Of Fire" (2:35)
Charles Spurling - "You've Got Love On Top Of Love" (2:16)
Review: Kent's Dance label run continues to gift us the finest in vintage soul with this stunning double-header from the songwriting mind of Charles Spurling. His track record included writing for James Brown, Hank Ballard and Junior McCants, and while is 'Ball Of Fire' would eventually be recorded by Marva Whitney as an uptempo cut, it's documented here in an earlier, smouldering version by Connie Austin. On the B-side, the pace picks up a little with Spurling himself leading 'You've Got Love On Top of Your Love', which would no doubt go down a storm with the Northern Soul crowd.

Infinity Pool (3:09)
Review: These two tracks from Mike Bandoni and Chip Wickham have been a long time coming. The two stablemates from the 'Craig Charles Fantasy Funk Band' have been discussing a collaboration for years and now; and it's finally in the bag! Mike brings his trademark killer funky drums (recorded by the legendary Malcolm Catto), percussion, Rhodes, bass and vintage guitar vibes to the party, whilst Chip delivers some sublime and highly complimentary work on sax and flute. 'Infinity Pool' sounds like a long-lost Bobbi Humphrey-meets-Bob James composition, with the flute taking centre stage - underpinned by what can only be described as mammoth funk grooves on every other instrument - while 'Get It!' is a cool number, channelling a phenomenally infectious groove and hook, both of which remain in the brain for days.

Review: Super Spicy's Super Spicy Recipe series is back with a sixth mouthwatering offering and once again it's a super hot outing of party-ready house and disco sounds. First up is the irresistibly colourful disco charm of Birdee with the freewheeling 'Underground' and its groove-infused piano. Label boss Monsieur Van Pratt then adds his own spin to a rare groove classic with a lung-busting soul vocal and Pato Watson is in edit mode as he tweaks 'Ella Fue' to perfection. Italian don Paul Older brings some funky jazz fusion sounds to his steamy 'Turkish Lights, C. Da Afro keeps it a party with his 'Nothing But The Funk' and Mexican Juan Soto slips into a more deep and loved-up funk-house vibe on 'All Is Full Of Love'.

Review: We're really loving the Galaxy Sound Co massive; the label invariably turns up with the heat required to make our heads turn. Their edits aren't just your regular edits, they're reworks of quality soul and funk gems from the creme-de-la-creme of diggers' bags. For instance, the present number nine in the series features Vitamin C's lo-fi jam reworked by Blackish and Theo Thelonious Beats Gillespie, and the result is something extra special - a driving groove to satisfy for than one sort of collector. On the flip, leftfield dance maestro Lovefingers has his "Mr Apples" tune turned into even more of an abstraction by Blackcash and TTBC himself; what you get is a singular slice of wavy psychedelia for the open-minded DJ. Review: Maxine Brown and Chuck Jackson are two of Wnad Records's finest singing talents, as well as being firm favourites of the Kent label. For that reason they are paired up on this vital 7", which provides DJs with some high grade weaponry. They tackle popular songs from Van McCoy and Luther Dixon respectively. with Brown serving up the super short but sweet "I Wonder What My Baby's Doing Tonight", a soul gem that will make your heart soar. Review: The Magnetics was formed in 2017 and bring a fresh fusion of vintage Jamaican sounds with elements of 60s ska, early reggae and rocksteady all couched din a soul and R&B style. This new 45rpm is another glorious one with the superb vocals of Susan Cardigan bringing the sunshine to 'My Oh My' with its Hammond chords and snaking bass. Review: What we would give to go digging in the vast vaults of influential soul label JB's. Well, thankfully, they do it themselves each Record Store Day and as such we have some real treasure here with Richard Caiton's swooning and soul-drenched love song 'Thank You.' It's a super rare one from back in 1978 that is a real piece of New Orleans soul history (it is eye wateringly pricey for an original, too, with the only current one listed at just L2500.) On the flip is another lush modern soul tune 'Where Is The Love' which has been arranged by Wardell Quezerque.

Review: Ten years have passed since Italian "cinematic funk" specialists Calibro 35 delivered their debut release, an anniversary they recently celebrated via a killer album called "Decade". Here, one of the album's standout cuts is released as a single. "Travelers, Explorers", featuring the seductive vocals of Elisa Zoot, is a beautiful end-of-night number rich in atmospheric instrumentation and cinematic strings reminiscent of Italian great Ennio Morricone. Over on the flipside they go down an altogether heavier route, delivering superb vocal and instrumental covers of Barry Gardiner's familiar theme from Gerry Anderson puppet show "Stingray". Short but sweet and thrillingly sweaty, the instrumental is arguably the seven's standout track by some distance.

Review: Calibro 35's latest release showcases the band's ability to explore new sonic territories while paying tribute to the legends of jazz-funk. This limited edition 7" vinyl includes two standout tracks, 'Lunedi Cinema feat. Marco Castello' and 'Chaser.' 'Lunedi Cinema' revisits Lucio Dalla's iconic theme from RAI TV's Monday Movie, infusing it with a fresh jazzy disco-funk feel. Marco Castello's scat singing adds a playful yet sophisticated layer to this energetic reimagining, keeping the spirit of the original intact while adding a modern flair. On the flip side, 'Chaser' is a groovy jazz-funk stormer originally composed by Piero Umiliani for the 1975 noir film The Body. Review: Terry Callier's rediscovery in the early 90s was a turning point for Acid Jazz and few records symbolise that era quite like 'I Don't Want To See Myself (Without You)'. Originally released as a one-off on the indie label Erect, the track was Callier's final release before stepping away from music, leaving behind a career that had spanned Prestige, Cadet, and Elektra. By the time Acid Jazz reissued it in 1990, the original pressing had become a grail for collectors, with prices soaring. The song itself is a masterclass in understated soul, Callier's plaintive vocal weaving through rich instrumentation with the kind of deep emotional resonance that only he could deliver. Over the next decade, his legend grewihe returned to recording, toured the UK, and finally received the recognition he deserved. In 2006, Acid Jazz gave the record another limited pressing, featuring a fresh edit from Andy Lewis. Here Hell Yeah Recordings shine a light on two of his numerous killer remixes. On paper, this may seem an unlikely collaboration - Japanese ambient and deep acid stalwart meets eccentric Finnish lounge, jazz and exotica veteran - but it's a genuinely brilliant EP. 'Big City Takes' genuinely makes the best of both Calm and Jimi Tenor's talents, with the latter's eyes-closed vocals, evocative flutes and shuffling exotica rhythms fitting perfectly with the former's stirring strings and immersive ambient electronics. Tapes remixes, first delivering a jazzy hip-hop informed head-nodder before serving up some ambient dub/digi-dub fusion, before Calm delivers his version of a second Tenor collaboration, 'Time and Space' - an ambient jazz masterpiece. Vendetta Suite's warming, subtly tropical Balearic rework of that track is also brilliant. Tip!

Review: Mr Bongo's reliable Brazil 45s series reaches its' 85th instalment. This time round the Brighton-based label has chosen to offer up two cuts from Waldir Calmon's 1970 set Waldir Calmon E Seus Multisons. While the album is not all that renowned, the track 'Airport Love Theme' - which resides on the A-side here - most certainly is, thanks to Madlib sampling it on the Madvillain album. It's a laidback and languid fusion of mellow soul breaks, Mexican stand-off trumpets, soaring choral vocals, Mediterranean acoustic guitars and mazy organ solos, all topped off with the sugary polish often associated with classic lounge music. Over on side B there's a chance to savour another killer cut from the same set, Jean-Jacques Perrey-esque lounge funk groover 'Afro Son'.

The incendiary live band has a new album on the way (their last dropped three years ago) so to get us in the mood Favorite Recordings has served up this suitably steamy workout. Review: The Brazil 45 series is pure gold for lovers of Latin sounds across the funk, jazz and soul spectrum. Each one sells out fats but usually emcees back around, as is the case with this 18th edition. It features Ely Camargo's 'Taieiras' from his Ely's 1972 album Cantos Da Minha Gente and is a lively folk-inspired track sampled famously by DJ Yoda in 2012. Despite recording 12 albums, Ely remains an enigmatic figure whose music is all we have to feed off. On the flip side, Rio sibling trio Trio Esperanca shine with their psychedelic gem from their 1971 self-titled album. Besides the fact that she was pretty prolific (12 albums between 1960 and 1983) Mr Bongo don't know much about Ely... Her music tells us volumes, however. Minimal, jaunty and wholly vocal-focussed, there's a great sense of mischief about "Taieiras" as the band and singers develop momentum. First Nothing, by contrast, is an entirely new affair, and after its full release in September 2024 comes two new ice-cold sound-shakings by remixer Noche. Here the artist attacks the title track with a blissfully whammied chug, with tremolo'ing Rhodeses on the sixteenths and minim-length breath-pads on the ones. He is joined by Astral Travel on this new single for Le Disque's Ambiwa imprint - a Northern Italian music store and distributor - and "World Traveller" is more of a lo-fi, acid jazz sort of song than anything techno or house-related. The real magic comes on the flipside, however, where master technician Donato Dozzy totally deconstruct the song with his cinematic reinterpretation that goes way beyond both the original or his usual flex of stripped-back four-to-the-floor. It's a fairly safe bet you won't have heard the kind of obscure wonderments they dust down from the history of funky nuggets on the far out fringes, and so it goes on this opening gambit - a split 7" from Capprells & Soul Brothers Band and The Inner Thumb. The Capprells were a Pittsburgh-based family group who released a string of singles in the 70s, all of which are hard to come by but with 'Close Your Eyes' quite possibly being the pick of the bunch, still carrying a little of that 60s magic and more than deserving of a fresh airing on this release. Review: Original copies of this sweet as you like bit of South African tropical disco-boogie brilliance have been down to change hands for over L700. As rare as it is, it's also brilliant and this first ever reissue confirms that. It's superbly warm and feel good, with tinny drums making lengthy strides beneath all manner of sizzling synths. Hints of Italo colour the melodies and the bouncy, strutting beat is pure bubblegum bliss. On the flip are some killer remixes that up the Italo levels and add more weight to the dubs bottom end.

Take It Too Far (3:49)
Review: Captain Over (real name Greg Surmacz) rather brilliantly describes himself as an "intergalactic skengman" who crafts "broken beats out of space debris". Here he makes his label debut on Darker Than Wax with his first fully instrumental EP (much of his previous work featured grime MCs). He opens the 12" strongly via the shuffling broken beats, alien electronics, warm chords and eight-bit melodies of "4D", before skewering the drums further on the wonderfully bass-heavy and out there "Deep Blue". Over on side B, "Mind's Eye" is an off-kilter chunk of spacey bruk positivity, "New Life Forms" boasts some sparkling synths and bleepy "space debris", and "Take It Too Far" is an on-point broken beat roller rich in Sinclair Spectrum beeps and rich, jammed-out chords.

Review: Captain Planet is a globe trotting DJ and producer who mixes up worldly roots music with his own fresh take on hip-hop and dancehall. For this one he joined up with Zuzuka Poderosa & Raphael Futura for a brilliant Brazilian disco and funk song that harks back to the 70s and 80s with influences like Tim Maia, Sandra Da Sa & Gilberto Gil. 'Moqueca' though also has some nice dance floor weight to it as well as the richly tropical percussion, steamy horns and seductive chords. On the flip is an instrumental and the good news is this is a taster of a full album to come.

Review: Caravela are an Afro-Brazilian quintet with members from Portugal, South America, Australia and the UK. Their music is an exploration of the communal traditional and spiritual music of Lusophone countries like Brazil and Cape Verde approached with a contemporary groove and feel. Caravela shine a light on traditional rhythms and styles and reimagine them with a jazz attitude of improvisation. Blending influences like Baden Powell, Mayra Andrade and Lionel Loueke, Caravela's exploration of Afro-Brazilian music on their debut EP is not to be missed.

It's All Over (3:26)
Review: First released in 2009 through People's Potential Unlimited - the vintage funk and soul outfit operant out of Washington, D.C. - Cardell Funk Machine's 'Shoot Your Shoot' is a daring tease, dealing in candid soul thematics about taking chances, and/or asking, "what's the worst that could happen?". The first ever release by this alias of the avant-soul Chicago musician Cardell Harrington, 'Shoot Your Shot' was released in 2009 but may have been recorded even earlier; Cardell was said to have only been 19 at the time, allegedly laying it down in prominent soul producer Donald Burnside's studio. Backed by the 'lo-fi' halfstep number 'It's All Over', this is electric soul through and through, commanding a bare-boned but still brilliantly even, neon sonic keel.

Review: Brazil 45s hit the quarter century in their run and show no sign of stopping. It's an all-girl affair on this one as two hugely popular and prolific singers take a spin under Mr Bongo's spotlight. Elizabeth (often known as Elizete) lays down a steamy samba flavour that gets raunchier as the track develops. Elza, meanwhile, gets busy on a Bossa tip as a carnival of percussion and horns go toe-to-toe with her sharp, sexy staccato vocals. Powerful.

Review: No thrills, no fills, just heavy funk. The Cardova 3's debut EP contains some of the rawest, dirtiest recordings you'll hear this side of the 60's, laid down by the finest three-piece of strutting guitar, in-the-pocket bass and dust bin-lid drums. This is a strictly limited one off run of only 100 copies vinyl, each hand-sprayed and numbered.

Review: The well regarded Whities label invites you deep into a darkened world of coldwave soundscapes on its next 12". There are Arabic overtones to Carl Gari's music here, both explicitly in the meditative vocals from Abdullah Miniawy, but also in the exotic synth drones that hang heavy in the air. It makes for a spiritual eight track affair that has a beautifully bleak and spiritual feeling: tracks are largely empty, absorbing affairs with only suggested rhythms moving you forward. Part organic and human, part mechanical and synthetic, Whities 023 is a bewitching and otherworldly listen of the highest order.

Review: Spanish label Vampi Soul continues to bring you off-centre party starters with a global outlook, this time looking to Peruvian cumbia legend Carlos Pickling and his orchestra. Pickling's fabled organ skills take centre stage on this pair of tracks, originally published in the 1960s on MAG but never available on a 45 before now. Whether you're a seasoned cumbia digger or just someone who appreciates infectious, vibrant grooves, this is a record with universal appeal timed perfectly for the sunnier months.

Loving In The Morning (2:36)
Review: A reissued 7" single, pressed on standard black vinyl, shows Carmen's unique fusion of soul, country and r&b, recorded in New York City with legendary producer Bob Morgan. Carmen's smooth, emotive vocals are perfectly complemented by the rich, soulful instrumentation of The New Frontier, harnessing the beauty of the early '70s music scene. Both songs highlight Carmen's ability to blend heartfelt lyricism with groovy, soulful melodies, creating a sound that resonates with fans of both northern soul and roots music. Despite not achieving mainstream fame, Carmen developed a dedicated following, and these songs provide a snapshot of his talent as a songwriter and performer. Housed in a full-color jacket with an insert, this release is perfect for fans of classic soul, funk, country and the crossroads of these genres. It's a remarkable opportunity to experience the timeless, evocative music of Kip Carmen in all its warmth and authenticity.

Review: Calvin Carr's wonderful gospel-soul has been a digger's favourite for yonks, often being cited and used by the very best selectors in the game. This 1878 single, originally out on Philadelphia United Records, is aptly named "Without Christ" and it offers listeners, dancers and lovers an opportunity for positive redemption. Much like the rest of the gospel world, this is perhaps the best way to convert people into enlightenment and keep them positive - there is absolutely no way that this disco-tinged gem cannot make you jump up with joy and excitement. The instrumental cut is pretty killer, too. BIG.

The Moment (4:35)
Review: 'I'm Here' is the glorious second single from Cornell CC Carter's album, Next Life. It is a superbly seductive and go-slow stepper with neat bass riffs spaciously drawn out beneath acoustic guitar motifs and lumpy drums. The vocal is butter sweet and as the track rolls on the chords grow ever more lush. After that memorising a-side comes a modern take on Curtis Mayfield style soul complete with the steamy spoken vocals, screen string sweeps and pillowy chords. Finishing it off in style is a bassline to die for.

Derrick Carter - "Squaredancing" (DC Nu Vox dub) (4:59)
George Alexander - "Promised Land" (feat Big John Whitfield) (3:23)
Review: This tasty release is the first instalment of BBE and Soul Clap member Eli "Bamboozle" Goldstein's "House On 45" series. The basic idea is to offer up rare and hard to find house cuts that have only ever been released on seven-inch singles. To kick things off, Goldstein has selected Derrick Carter's 2017 "DC Nu Vox Dub" of his 2002 classic "Squaredancing In A Roundhouse", an insatiable version of a killer cut rich in bluesy samples, bumpin' beats and scat vocals. Equally as impressive is George Alexander and Big John Whitfield's 2009 cover of Joe Smooth classic "Promised Land", a warm and musically expansive affair that adds superb new flute and electric piano parts to one of house music's most celebrated songs.

Kenny Carter's "You'd Better Get Hip Girl" is straight out of the Motown playbook; raw emotions, rich harmonies and superb orchestration it's a ballad of the highest order. "My Life Is No Better" carries the same lamented sentiment but delivers it in a much more uptempo fashion a la Delfonics. Powerful.

Let's Run Away From The World (3:15)
Review: Tramp Records has a good relationship with obscure Illinois soul man Wayne Carter. Back in 2013 they put out a compilation of his near impossible-to-find singles and here reissue arguably his most rare and sought-after 45 (for proof, check how much original private press copies change hands for online). With its meandering Hammond organ solos, heavyweight rhythm section, fuzzy horns and impassioned vocals, "Peter In Or Out" is a genuine deep funk bomb. On the flip you'll find the more laidback and groovy "Let's Run Away From The World", in which backing band the Organ Twisters provide a fitting backing for Carter's impassioned plea to a lover to "at last be free".

Big Jim - "Stone Born Country Boy" (3:02)
Review: There's not an awful lot of information about Perfect Toy's latest killer funk reissue, which appears to gather together two different recordings of 'Big' Jim Cartwright's sole single, 'Stone Born Country Boy'. At least two original pressings of the obscure, extremely hard-to-find single exist, with Cartwright recording slightly different versions each time. On this essential reissue, the (probably later) A-side version is the superior recording; tighter, heavier and blessed with female backing vocals, it's a fiery chunk of country funk from the point when the style was starting to diverge from rhythm and blues. The marginally longer flipside take is most likely an earlier recording; fuzzier and more raucous, it is closer in tone to purist rhythm and blues.

Breathe For Me (feat Chrissi Roper) (4:09)
Review: Caruso's 'Thank You', released on Ten Lovers Music, delivers a refined blend of broken beat and nu-jazz. The title track on Side-1 is a smooth and jazzy number, featuring a laid-back, shuffling rhythm with subtle Latin or island influences. The groove is easy-going yet rich, making it an effortless listen with an inviting vibe. On Side-2, 'Breathe For Me' leans into broken beat territory with a smooth, soulful vocal and standout keyboard work. The track flows seamlessly, offering a mellow yet rhythmic experience. Both songs exhibit Caruso's ability to fuse jazzy elements with contemporary beats, creating a soothing and sophisticated sound that will resonate with fans of nu-jazz and broken beat.

Review: The Carver Area High School Seniors' 'Get Live '83 (The Senior Rap)' is a stone cold party hip hop classic. It has been out of print for some four decades, however, and so has become a rather hard to find and expensive record. Thankfully, Soul Jazz Records have got the rights to this full reissue which was first pressed in 1982 on the private press label Challenger. The cut featured as the standout on Soul Jazz Records' recent 'Yo! Boombox' collection and now standalone as a seven minute stunner. It's an old school party disco delight with great rap and killer beats, all presented with the original artwork.

Review: Casbah strikes again with a powerful homage to the NYC foundations with this juicy, insatiably funky piece of disco soul. Driven by a belting vocal from Angela Goode, there's a strong sense of timelessness, honesty and raw funk that smacks with authenticity and one of the funkiest slap-bass breakdowns you'll hear all year. Chicago's Rahaan takes the remix duties with a pumping contemporary disco cut while Casbah strips things back himself for the essential DJ tool that is the percussion edit. Feel the love.
