Lit Up (4:40)
Lit Up (The remix) (3:51)
Review: A Skillz and Krafty Kuts are veteran names by now but at one option they were some of the hottest new DJs and producers in the game. They pioneered a breakbeat, cut-up and paste sounds 20 years ago that was high on energy and with plenty of character. Now they look to the roots of the sounds they used to draw from and serve up a new single on Jam City that is all about disco. 'Lit Up' has loose, jumbled drums and funk basslines with some great vocal flourishes up top from Gizelle Smith. A remix on the flip takes things into deeper new soul territory.

Richard Ace - "Hang 'Em High" (3:07)
Hugh Black & George Ferris - "Candy Lady" (2:18)
Review: The studio of Harry J's in Jamaica has turned out another pair of belters here. This limited edition and hand-numbered 7" features two killer 1969 tunes. The first is a bittersweet roots tune with a lead trumpet that does all the work. It's in conversation with the organ below and as they to and fro, expressing their pair, the bass rumbles and the percussion jangles. As well as that standout from Richard Ace, the flip-side has a super rare tune 'Candy Lady' by Hugh Black & George Ferris. It's another earthy tune with lovestruck vocals.

Everyday (5:06)
The Top Of My Head (4:17)
Review: Jai Alai's latest release brings forth a collection of forgotten vinyl tracks that have been previously unreleased on 7" format or limited to CD-only albums. Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II, to give him his full name, was a pivotal figure in jazz history and a prominent trumpeter and flugelhorn player after his stint with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the mid-50s. Collaborating with jazz icons like John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, and Sonny Rollins, Byrd's journey evolved into experimenting with jazz fusion, African rhythms, and r&b by the late 60s. His transformative fusion work, notably with the Blackbyrds, reshaped the jazz-funk landscape, paving the way for dance jazz on disco floors and becoming a wellspring for hip-hop samples. These are two of his many great moments of soul-drenched goodness.

Troubles Of The World

Christian Harmonizers - "Troubles Of The World" (3:02)
Gospel Travelers - "Jesus Is Watching You" (3:15)
Review: For those without an intimate knowledge of the private-press-dominated gospel scene of the 1960s, '70s and '80s, Greg Belson's forthcoming Divine Funk compilation of rare gospel-soul and gospel-funk offers a brilliant introduction to the sound - as does this sampler "45", one of a number being released ahead of the full collection. Christian Harmonizers' 'Troubles of the World', which sits on the A-side, is so rare and obscure that it has no Discogs entry. While that's no guarantee of quality, the track genuinely is sensational, sounding a lot like James Brown making gospel-funk rather than the sexually charged sweatiness he was known for. Turn to the B for another exceedingly hard-to-find treat: Gospel Travelers' more laidback, sweet, soulful and bluesy 'Jesus is Watching You'.

D'ailie - "Live It Up" (instrumental) (4:13)
Review: This latest is a reissue of a Congress Productions EP featuring their seminal 'Neptune'. The much-sampled early 80s jazz-funk classic comes in original form next to two unreleased cuts. The first is a rare boogie cut 'Live It Up' that has been extended for more dancefloor heft having first been dropped under the D'aile' alias as a B-side. Then comes 'Kevin's Funk' which is named in reference to Incognito trumpet player Kevin Robinson, who played as part of a Congress-associated line-up for this session.

Jack Costanzo & Gerry Woo - "Jive Samba"
Al Escobar & His Orchestra - "Tighten Up"
Review: An extra special 45: Jack Costanzo's nickname Mr Bongo inspired the label's very name. One of the most prolific band leaders of his time, the drum-heavy "Jive Samba" was originally released on Tico in 1968 on his Latin Percussion With Soul album. For more percussive precocity flip for Al Escobar's take on Archie Bell & The Drells' classic northern soul anthem "Tighten Up". First released as The Modern Sound Of Al Escobar, original pressings have long since vanished or found a place in collections, making this an even more attractive release.

Cymande - "Bra"
Gang Starr - "Movin' On"
Review: Here's a cool concept... Originals have coupled up a funk classic and a tune that's sampled it. Cymande's chucklesomely titled "Bra" has been sampled by De La Soul, Raze, Chuck Chillout, Busy Bee and Rhythm Technicians, but it's Gang Starr who score the B-Side with their old school classic "Movin' On". Ironically that was later sampled by Chad Jackson in "Hear The Drummer Get Wicked"... This unique and highly collectable concept could go on forever!

Teenager (3:31)
Review: The Four Flies 45s series opens a new chapter with a collection of super-groovy themes from the finest Italian soundtracks. They are being pressed up to 45rpm for the first time and the opening salvo is from Gianni Proia's Mondo Di Notte Oggi, a 1976 Mondo movie. Gianni Oddi and Gianni Dell'Orso scored it having worked in a wide range of genres and on many soundtracks before this one. 'Soul Meeting' is summery soul and upbeat Latin grooves with a big piano phrase powering it along. 'Teenager' is more deep cut and elegant with its big horns and strings.

Review: vKeen Africa 45 followers should recognise Eshete's name as he's appeared on the series before. Mr Bongo call him the Ethiopian James Brown and the Abyssinian Elvis... And they're not far off. This 74 rarity shows him crooning and crying at full pelt over a solid funk groove that's powered by piano and guitar. Flip for an equally rare vocal track from fellow Ethiopian Girma. Recorded in 69, full focus is squared on the lavish organ leads while the horns provide a soft but sturdy backdrop.

Aretha Franklin & Black Star - "Young, Gifted & Black" (4:50)
Aretha Franklin & Gucci Mane - "My Chain Of Fools" (2:48)
Review: Over the past few years, American producer Amerigo Gazaway has delivered some of the most inspired mash ups and bootleg remixes around, including a number that breathe new life into recordings by genuine soul and hip-hop greats. He's at it again here, crafting two killer cuts featuring the late, great Aretha Franklin. He first offers up a head-nodding take on 'Young, Gifted and Black' that cleverly combines his own beats, extended raps from Tallib Kewli and Mos Def as Black Star, and snippets of Aretha at her powerful best. Flip the disc for 'Chain of Fools', a stomping fusion of hip-hop and Detroit soul which sees him flit between Gucci Mane raps and more Aretha goodness.

Gnabolo (6:57)
Review: Bologna-based twosome G&B (apparently short for Gino and Dino) have offered up some of the best scalpel-style disco edits of recent times, with each of their three previous EPs receiving plaudits from both party-starting selectors and dusty-fingered record collectors. This fourth EP lives up to the high-quality of its predecessors, delivering three more hot-to-trot edits. The Italian pair begins via the triumphant disco-funk of 'Ori One', where rubbery bass, mazy electric piano solos, spacey synth chords and punchy horns catch the ear, before opening side B with a tidy revision of a boogie-era disco-soul gem ('Homecoming'). Arguably best of all though is closing cut 'Gnabolo', a superbly squelchy revision of a killer Afro-boogie number from 1982.

Gusto (G&D edit) (6:00)
Review: Nine years after volume one landed in stores, Italian twosome G&D return with a fifth instalment in their occasional edit series. This time they've got company, too. Fellow Italian producer LTJ contributes a brilliant EP-opening edit - the languid, disco-meets-jazz-funk shuffle of 'The Rain Machine', where elastic bass and electric piano solos catch the ear - while Star Creature signees First Touch provide a smoother, chunkier and more synth-heavy rework of the very same track on side B. G&D fill in the gaps, first tweaking a sweaty disco-funk jam ('Ziddy'), before reworking a surging, techno-tempo disco stomper (the wonderfully camp 'Gusto').

Review: Galaxy Sound Co. hits 40 releases deep with yet another buy-on-sight 7". This latest entry into the Sample Series kicks off with an edit of 'Lovely Is Today' by Eddie Harris from his 1968 album Plug Me In. It's steeped in delightfully conversational saxophone with rousing chords dancing beneath in a swinging 60s fashion. A real classy gem. On the flip, 'September 13' by Deodato gets reworked and is from his self-titled jazz-funk album. This one is more funky and it's led by some big, proud horn stabs and silky drum rumbles enriched with great synths. Another vital 45 from this fine label.

Review: Galxtc take us back to the prime era of Brit funk here with a super slick new single for the young Space Grapes label. 'Life Is A Mirror' is an eleven minute workout which really uses the long playing time to take you on a trip. It's got a loose rhythm section with tight drum work, a peppering of percussion and darting synths that are cosmic and funky from the off. Building up a fine head of steam it gets ever more intense and fabulous with various different chapters all taken care of by a range of leads. The dub and version complete this fine maxi single.

Review: Arguably one of the first ever dubplate labels, Sunshine Sound was home to limited runs of DJ-friendly versions throughout the 70s and early 80s. Most are long gone, but the "Unreleased Version" series continues to unearth the existing gems. Having previously dusted off a very special version of Candido, they return with three more exclusive rubs; a super-slinky boogie take of Taana Gardner's 1979 "Paradise Express", a thriving, drum-heavy take on the lolloping bass jam "Loosen Up" and the piano-slapping strutting "Hot Fun" where Dee Dee Sharp's vocals provide the ultimate sensuous showdown. It is two versions of his debut single from 1971 on New Day and if you can find one of those original copies on 7" then you will also need to find over 500 quid to make it your own. Buddy Conner - "Half Way Loving"
Review: Long awaited reissue of one of the most in-demand slices of soulful funk to ever grace a turntable! Kicking off with an instantly recognisable break (stand up Gangstarr!), this gritty slab of down home groove is always a big hit on the dancefloor rasping vocals and a swirling organ over fat back drums and a sinuous piano line add up to create a true classic. Originals (on the New Day label) are tough to find, and even though Billy went on to score a top ten hit with 'Super Duper Love' (recently covered by Joss Stone), practically nothing is known about him. Nothing, that is, except the fact that he did indeed get some, and wants us all to know about it.

I've Learned My Lesson (2:55)
Don't Do What I Do (2:23)
Review: Nebraska-raised, California-based soul man Vernon Garrett was at the peak of his powers when "I've Learned My Lesson" was first released back in 1974. He'd scored a number of dancefloor hits at the tail end of the '60s via 7" singles on such labels as Kent and Venture Records, and by '74 was happily releasing material on the Watts U.S.A imprint he'd established as a vehicle for his own work. "I've Learned My Lesson" is arguably Garrett's strongest song of the period - a James Brown style heavy funk workout full of rousing horns, blistering drum breaks, jammed-out organ lines, gospel style backing vocals and, of course, his own scorching lead vocal. Since original copies are pretty hard to find these days, this reissue is more than welcome.

Review: Scorching soul heat from Atlanta: once-married couple Delia Gartrell and James Shaw (best known as The Mighty Hannibal) unleashed a short-but-singeing run of 45s around the late 60s/early 70 and here are two of their hottest moments. "I Must Be Doing Something Right" comes with a belting gospel backing chorus and a nagging hook you've definitely felt before. Review: Those who've not checked Marvin Gaye's 1972 soundtrack to blaxploitation movie Trouble Man - a score that was heavily inspired by earlier works by his contemporaries Isaac Hayes (Shaft) and Curtis Mayfield (Superfly) - may only have heard the vocal version of the film's title track, a song that has featured on many retrospectives of the Detroit soul great's work. This "45" takes a different approach, showcasing two of the album's instrumental highlights. On the A-side you'll find 'T Plays it Cool', a synth-sporting slab of wah-wah-guitar-powered jazz/funk fusion blessed with some seriously good sax solos. Turn to the B for 'T Stands For Trouble', a more emotive and laidback number that features more complex horn arrangements, a head-nodding groove and more vintage synthesizer sounds.

Review: In the pantheon of Marvin Gaye classics, "T Plays It Cool" is a steadfast favourite here at Juno Records. That intro, the stone cold drum fill, the monster saxophone, the subtle moog melodies, and the fact it was part of Gaye's superb soundtrack for Troubleman. A mark of its stature as a classic is the countless times it has been sampled, with Originals opting to line the flip of their latest 45 with Jazzy Jeff's chunky late '80s cut "A Touch Of Jazz". The band themselves have given full blessing for this one and as soon as the needle drops you're taken into a swirling, high-octane world of raw 60s rock heavy funk. It is very much a case of Tower of Power meets Funkadelic with a lo-fi twist.

Look Out (I'm Gonna Blow Your Mind) (2:55)
Mother Duck (2:43)
Review: When Jazzman themselves describe a release as 'hopelessly obscure' and 'off the radar to even the most dedicated' you know you've got something special. There's a really raw rusty garage funk to both sides here; both the classic R&B swing, majestic organs and powerful vocals of "Look Out" and the sweaty instrumental frenzy "Mother Duck" instantly enrapture and make you ponder the age-old question... HOW has this gone unnoticed for so long?

The Big Noise (3:27)
Review: Burning Sole sure will have those soles bring with this new 7" from The Getups. Here the band serve up one of their super powerful house funk takes on the hit pop single by Fitz and the Tantrums. The way was guitar twists and turns, the urgent drums hammer away and the warm, funky bass ties it all together. Flip it over for a high speed cop-chase theme from the 60's. 'The Big Noise' is just that. This one is super limited with just 100 copies each on either purple or black vinyl.

The Cracker (4:26)
Review: London's The Getup release their seventh release, this time for Saskatoon's' Funky Pops Records. Hammond player Mark Ashfield first met up with established funk musicians Mark Claydon (drums) and Ian Stevens (bass) and that's when the band was born. The past few years have seen them establish themselves in the national funk scene, playing many of the top venues like The Jazz Cafe and The Yardbird in Birmingham. Now they add Lee Blackmore on guitar and horns by Tristan Gaudion and Alex Harris. The Getup's sound remains firmly in the British camp - indeed they seem to have developed their own unique style and have been compared by many to an early James Taylor Quartet.

Walk Like A Motherfucker (3:08)
Issac Hayes (2:48)
Review: Karma Chief takes strict instructions from Ghost Funk Orchestra here to 'Walk Like A Motherfucker'. It is a single taken originally from their 2019 album A Song For Paul which was written, arranged, and performed by Seth Applebaum with plenty of sidemen on cello, violin, trombone and trumpet all making it a fulsome and raw funk sound. The vocals are coated in sleazy reverb to add some menace to the sensuality of the tones and on the flip is 'Issac Hayes', another reverb heavy funk chaser.

Declaration (5:46)
Review: Detroit will always be known as the birthplace of techno but the mighty fine Star Creature label does a fine job of offering up different sonic perspectives from the Motor City. Kibbi Gibbon is a new outfit from the 313 that makes a great mark here with two effortlessly cool and breezy new instrumental funk cuts. 'Still Dreamin'' is all leggy drums and thinking melodies with squelchy lines and warming bass that will prove irresistible once the sun comes out and even beyond the time it sets. 'Declaration' on the flip slows things down a little for some extra romance with whimsical leads and a distant cosmic glow.

Africa Con Bajo
Review: A side-project from some of the members of excellent Spanish funk band Speak Low, the Gigoletto Brass Band have come together to release two vibrant and lush songs on this excellent single. "Boogalow" is a delight, a live and organic sway through some classic mamba and boogaloo rhythms with a healthy helping of brass on top. "Africa Con Bajo" has a more 70s funk feel, with some riveting key changes and a quirky rhythm to really make it stand out.
