Alpha & Omega
Cat: 1005. Rel: 10 May 12
  1. Alpha & Omega
  2. Origin
  3. Bloodline
Review: FXHE bloodline member Big Strick continues to excel on his own 7 Days Ent. label, dropping his first 12" of 2012 which has a nice community feel to proceedings. Alpha & Omega introduces us to Generation Next, a rising 16 year old talent from the streets of Detroit who contributes alongside Mr Strickland to all three tracks here. Stylistically, the three tracks here seem equally indebted to Juan Atkins pure techno endeavours as Infiniti and the sub aqueous grooves of Drexciya, not least the restrained title track which shimmers from the murky depths into a finely crafted liquid groove imbued with bubbling elatory Utopian textures. On the flip "Origin" ripples with pressure, its rhythmic elements grappling for your attention as the space between them decreases with Strick and Gen Next expertly layering texture upon texture. A masterful 12" shaped exercise in modern day Detroit sounds is completed with the devious electrofied snap of "Bloodline".

Resivior Dogs Vol 1
  1. Big Strick - "Family Affair" (feat Omar S)
  2. Genereation Next - "Windsor Nights"
  3. Reckless Ron Cook - "Night Moves"
  4. Big Strick - "Armed & Dangerous"
Review: Leonard "Big Strick" Strickland is perhaps best known for his family ties with Omar-S (they're cousins), though his productions are well worthy of praise in their own right. Here, he offers up a sampler 12" featuring cuts from his recent (and excellent) Reservoir Dogs LP. Perhaps the most noteworthy cut is "Family Affair", a lovingly constructed chunk of hypnotic, melodic deepness written with Omar-S. That said, Strick's solo effort "Armed & Dangerous" - a winding chunk of voodoo techno - is arguably better. The mazy techno-funk of Reckless Ron Cook's "Night Moves" is also outstanding.

Like Father Like Son

  2. Generation Next - "And You Too"
  3. Generation Next - "Like Father, Like Son" (feat Big Strick)
Review: Like Father, Like Son sees Big Strick and his prodigious son Generation Next team up for a split 12" showcasing this pair of criminally underappreciated Detroit producers. "Rain Dance" sees the elder of the two deliver a deep techno journey filled with abstracted textures and organic chimes that sound, while the young Generation Next shows a remarkable maturity beyond his years on "And You Too", where sparse, subtle chords and the simplest of melodies drift by on a light rhythm. On "Like Father, Like Son" the two pair up for the most gently uplifting of deep piano jams. Just like pretty much everything on 7 Days Entertainment, this is some nigh on essential material.

Review: This week we have some new wax from Plastik People Recordings. The Albuquerque, New Mexico based operation presents the Locked In EP. On the A side you're in good hands with label head honcho Marc Cotterell who gives you two expressions in classic house music in the form of 'The Way You Hold Me' and the timeless 'Ease Your Mind' complete with swung beats and roaring diva vocals. They tapped legendary Sheffield producer Gavin Dista for a couple of previously unreleased exclusives on side B. Dista serves up a true zeitgeist of the mid '90s on the uplifting garage of 'Fantasy' followed by the absolutely euphoric vocal house anthem 'Funk House'.

INNATE 004 (12")
Cat: INN8 004. Rel: 11 Jan 21
  1. Aroy Dee - "Leegte" (5:29)
  2. Gilbert - "Furthest Planet" (7:26)
  3. Jonski - "Venusian Surface" (6:23)
  4. DJ Guy - "Aphelion Orbit" (5:56)
Review: The fourth multi-artist EP from blog-turned-record label Innate takes the imprint's inherently warm and far-sighted sound into new intergalactic directions. Offering a quartet of cuts from established producers and rising stars, all inspired by dreams of cross-cosmic travel and the alluring weightlessness of deep space. 004 explores the love of stargazing electronics in much greater deapth.

The A-side is all about melodious and spacey electro with Dutch legend Aroy Dee making a rare appearance away from his acclaimed M>O>S Recordings label. "Leegte" A1 is impressively immersive, cloaking a jaunty bassline and lo-fi beats in sumptuous aural textures and glassy-eyed chords. Accompanied by Innate label regular Gilbert, "Furthest Planet" A2 is a deep roller whose lilting lead lines, shimmering electronics and tumbling acid lines are little less than life-affirming.

On side B, the sound subtly shifts towards the multi-coloured, sci-fi shimmer of techno. Newcomer Jonski, (aka Bristol electro producer Zobol) drops "Venusian Surface" B1 - a classic interstellar jam full of vivid chords, echoing synth squiggles and alluring leads that rise above a classic tech-funk bassline. Last but not least, effervescent Welshman DJ Guy (Unthank/Other World Music) slams down an energetic techno stomper in "Aphelion Orbit": boasting brilliantly breathless drum programming, illuminated by the celestial shimmer of accompanying chords. A perfect conclusion to Innate's most action-packed release to date.

Review: French deep house imprint Rutilance reaches its 'Twentieth' release as the name suggests, with four surefire tracks by its label chiefs. On the A side, the ever reliable DJ Steaw hands in two tributes to the sounds of yesteryear: he first captures the classic sound of the Cab Drivers on the tough rolling analogue bounce of "This Kind Of Music", followed by the funky disco loops on "Fat Sherbet". On the flip, co-head Gunnter makes a rare appearance and pushes the envelope harder with his tough rolling and dubby stomper "Wait" and closes it out with the entrancing energy of "Shhhake It" where its sonar bleeps hypnotise you against a backdrop of Todd Terry style 4/4 breakbeats.

Review: London-based G Markus' credentials include productions on Soul Clap Records, Exploited, Roots For Bloom, Music For Freaks and Monologues. This will be the sixth edition of his own G-Edits series, where he serves up a familiar stateside groove that has been respectfully respliced on "Red E" - think classic Strictly Rhythm or Catch from the early '90s. On the flip, it's more of a remix on the sexy late-night trip "Cum Thru" that will give y'all a nice fix of deepness with its bouncy bassline and soulful vocals. More surefire grooves from the lesser known alias of Ben Gomori.

  1. Soul Control (Palms Trax remix) (5:51)
Review: Back in 2014 Galcher Lustwerk and Palms Trax were both emergent artists making their first tentative steps into the scene. While they may be thoroughly distinct in their sounds, they found some crossover in an exchange of remixes, with Lustwerk's take on "Forever" appearing on Lobster Theremin. Palms Trax returned the favour with a version of Lustwerk's "Soul Control" which never saw the light of day until now. While it's certainly redolent of the earlier phase of Palms Trax's career, the effervescent musicality at the heart of the release is still completely in step with Palmsy as we know and love him today, replete with Lustwerk's inimitable laconic vocal delivery over the top.

  4. Kevin Griffiths - "Satori" (5:46)
Review: Tsuba's ten year anniversary - that's right, it has been that long already - has been marked with hit after hit from a wide selection of artists from across the house kingdom. In fact, for this 2nd instalment of the festivities, we have White Material frontman Galcher Lustwerk remixed by the inimitable Jimpster, with the latter putting a more starry-eyed mechanic onto the original; For Romeau complete the A-side with a vintage-sounding remix of "Pinball" by Williams. On the flip, Roy Comanchero drops the Chicago bass over a minimal sort of percussion groove on "Hypba". Kevin Griffiths adds a little acid to the jingly 707 beat of "Satori", and completes a stellar EP from the magnetic Tsuba.

  3. Untitled
  4. Uvolnenie
Review: Having already made a strong connection with the ever-excellent Udacha label, Russian duo Gamayun now take their talents to Hesperian Sound Division to unfurl more of their delicate, richly musical creations. "Golden Ratio" leads in on stunning jazz piano refrains, edging threads of percussion into the mix with poise that sets Gamayun apart from the rest of the crowd. "Ascension" takes things in a more cosmic direction, all swooping and swooning synth lines beamed in from a distant star. "Untitled" has a more lazy, blues-minded attitude, while "Uvolnenie" edges a little more techno influence into the mix, but truly this is space-age music played by musicians with genuine chops.

Review: Surely one of the finest record labels operating out of Russia right now, Udacha welcomes Gamayun back for a second time to admirably dive into the particular spirit that surrounds the label. Somewhere between loose-fit soulful house grooves you might hear on Downbeat and a more mystical, far-out spirit, this mysterious producer is a dab hand at weaving a particularly enchanting spell. The jazzy fluidity of "C-Music" could easily sit alongside some of Vakula's more wayward works, while "Aerial Dance" pirouettes off into an abstract rhythmic space that truly stimulates even as it confuses. Records this fresh-sounding don't roll around every day.

  1. The Phase
  2. Vari Tube
  3. Slam Dunk
  4. Dons Slide
Review: Aubrey's Don Gardon alias was a one-shot decoy deployed in 1997 with the now highly sought-after "Textures" 12" on Aubrey's own Textures label. While the provenance of these new tracks is a little foggy at this stage, what you can be sure of is the grade of techno we're dealing with here. Aubrey's illustrious career speaks for itself, and so do these tracks in the first Textures release since 2001. "The Phase" is an effervescent, funk laced race to the stars, while "Vari Tube" takes a more intimate route through dusty house that wouldn't sound out of place in the Workshop stratosphere. "Slam Dunk" is a cheeky, jazzy affair while "Dons Slide" gets a little more freaky and far out in the finest tradition of B2 tracks.

Review: Manchester's Garth Be is up next on esteemed London based imprint Wolf Music. This is his latest release since last year's Law Of Fives EP on Ruf Kutz. Much like fellow homeboy and elder statesman Trus'Me, he channels the dusty, soulful and emotive sounds of the Motor City like that of Kenny Dixon Jr and Theo Parrish et al and even sneaks in a few cheeky disco edits like on the intro "Feelin To Be". On the evocative "Pashun" we have a right wicked jam packed full of tight and dusty rhythms, neon-lit synths and emotive chord progressions. The late night deepness of "Allens" is another worthy addition to this collection of fine tunes, as is the off-kilter minimal electro of "Jodisho" and the absolutely saturated lo-fi/slo-mo bliss of "Jonse".

  2. Purple (4:04)
Review: Patrick Gibin has signed some terrific records to his Mother Tongue label, so it's no surprise to discover that the Italian imprint's first "45" is a bona fide stunner. It sees sometime Gustosa producer Gary Superfly join forces with Other Lands (AKA Gavin Sunderland, previously best known for his work as Fudge Fingaz) to offer up the kind of sumptuously warm, languid, loose, toasty and organic fare that can't quite decide whether it wants to be jazz-funk, modern boogie or especially hazy deep house. A-side "Endless" is particularly potent, with waves of kaleidoscopic synth sounds and twinkling Rhodes solos relaxing over a chunky bassline and head-nodding drums, though toastier and hazier flipside "Purple" is almost as good.

Review: Simone Gatto has been working tirelessly to build up his catalogue of deep, thoughtfully crafted techno expressions - with albums on Out-Er, Pregnant Void and Sheik N' Beik, not to mention plenty of singles and EPs too, he's done a fine job of establishing himself as a singular voice in the techno thoroughfare. This latest 12" comes courtesy of Finale Sessions, who coax out some of the deeper material in Gatto's arsenal. There's heads down dubbiness to immerse yourself in on "Melodies From The Hearth," craftily filtered house abstractions on "Foot Tapping Mix" and the very Finale-esque smooth out of "How Can I Get To Sleep."

Review: Having previously appeared on TINK! Music back in 2015, Portugese producer Gatupreto returns to the label for their second release with the powerful, vocal led "I Became Me". There's a loose, tribal lilt to the percussion on this lead track, while the wobbly bass gives everything a gnarly swagger that offsets the impassioned vocal in style. Philou Louzolo takes to remix duties with a perfect compliment to the original, edging the wild elements into a focused yet natural kind of Afro house. On the flip, "Afrowerk" brings a distinctive vintage soundtrack approach to the table, and "Gatu Di Noti" features heavily syncopated drums tumbling over even more darkside monosynth action.

Now the UK talent is back with more of his warm, cuddly deep house sounds, all mixing acid jazz instrumentation with slick electronic synthesis. Opener "Much Love" is a deriving number with a dreamy sax line adding the romance, while "Regards" is even more tender with its gentle pianos and shuffling, soul infused house grooves. Review: This year, Theo Parrish seems to be doing his best to breathe new life into the careers of broken beat-era producers and musicians. Having previously released an excellent EP from Dego and Kaidi Tatham on Sound Signature, his latest missive comes from one-time conscious hip-hop producer Ge ology and one-time go-to jazz keys-man Mark De Clive-Lowe. The latter's brilliant synthesizer and piano work is arguably the highlight of both tracks here. On the spacey, P-funk influenced space-house swing of "Moon Circuitry" he does his best impression of Herbie Hancock, while "Escape On The Lodge Freeway" boasts intricate jazz solos atop a slightly tougher, chunkier deep house groove. Both tracks are, of course, impeccable.

Review: Spencer Kincy takes us back to 94 as part of his four EP series that documents the first run of Gemini EPs on Green Velvet's seminal Relief Records imprint. Still as ahead of their time as they were almost 25 years ago, "The Beginning" is wildly off grid, loose and insanely funky while the rest of the EP gradually morphs into breath taking technoid experiments "Floating" takes a high NRG feel with its looping insistency "Klonopin" and its edited sibling "Klonopinless" offer a full physical sensation with their brazen hypnotic loopiness. Review: As Music and Power hits release number 15, the label serves up a big one from Ron Trent, who presents his Gemini Jazz project across two Longford, spiritually hypnotic tracks. Of course, the sis always how the main man rolls, but even for him these are strong: "Earth Dance" has a lush arrangement that jingles and jangles with streaming piano chords and trilling keys, languid baselines and lithe percussion. "Absolution" is a little deeper, with more cosmic jazz rays radiating from the core. This is soul music that is utterly stirring and intoxicating.

Review: Tre Stickland is the man behind the Generation Next Project and, together with big bossman Big Strick, these two have become important new names from the 313. Stickland is on a solo mission this time, with three effective techno-house killers that'll appeal to fans of Omar S and Theo Parrish in his less soulful mood. "Cascade" is a simple yet full-bodied tune bolstered down by a dusty, mechanical beat flex, which is followed by the relatively more vibrant sounds and tones of the dubby house cut "Vultures". Over on the flipside, "Our Time" is the funk nugget, the track which manages to mix up the best elements of Generation Next's house, techno, and boogie sensibilities into a see minute monster. Recommended!

Review: FXHE fam Big Strick's 7 Days Entertainment introduced us to the 16 year old talents of Generation Next last year, and here he returns with his first full EP in Lamborghini Dreams. The title track comes across like OB Ignitt's recent classic "Oh Jabba" with smooth Rhodes chords and almost cosmic melody drifting across staccato drum machine beats, but the rest show a producer clearly inspired by the simple structures of Omar S' productions. "110" is a devastating piece of trippy, fluttering techno, "Hood Anthem" pairs bright staccato synth textures with curt percussion and "October Oasis" utilises bubbling analogue tones and shrill arpeggio drifts to great effect. The name Generation Next may come with a lot of expectation for someone so young, but on the strength of this release he's already poised to give his established peers a run for their money.

  4. Vanilla Sky
Review: Generation Next aka Tre Strickland - son of Omar-S associate Big Strick - has impressed since first joining forces with his dad on 2011's Like Father, Like Son LP. Here he proves his continued development as a producer with an excellent collection of warm, deep, soul-flecked house cuts for Strickland family imprint 7 Days Entertainment. As you'd expect, highlights are plentiful, from the skittering machine drums, dreamy chords and occasional organs of "Vanilla Sky", to the tech-tinged simplicity of the melodious-but-tough "Chilli Cheese Fries". Best of all, though, is the blazed beatdown feel of "The Tomorrow People", a hazy saunter through rich chords, shuffling percussion and snaking electronics.

  3. Joni (5:06)
Review: Big Stick's 7 Days Entertainment delivers more of the same quality house music from the Motor City that it has fast become renowned for. The Strickmaster's latest release comes from none other than his own offspring, the supremely talented Generation Next, whose Ender 12" will definitely appeal to anyone that checked last year's Like Father, Like Son. Lead cut "Ender" is uplifting and soulful with its tough beat, mesmerising pianos and that bassline! "Dream States" is all dreamy keys and cowbells; what more you want? (its equally as funky!). Closing out proceeding is "Joni" taking things deeper but that 808 beat is absolutely tight!

Juno Jam EP

  1. Juno Jam
  2. Tom Jam
  3. Djungel Jam
Review: Genius Of Time and Running Back seems like such a perfect fit you wonder why the Swedish duo haven't graced Gerd Janson's label before now. It might be because Alexander Berg and Nils Krough aren't exactly the most prolific of duos when it comes to original material with only three EPs to their name since they inaugurated the Aniara project in such sublime fashion back in 2010. Fans of Genius of Time and John Talabot's DJ Kicks mix have added reason to engage in some vociferous rejoicing as the former's sublime offbeat number "Juno Jam" contribution to the latter release is centre stage on this 12". In addition to the A Side bliss of that Berg and Krough slip in two more percussive numbers on the flip which Running Back quite rightly point out would make "Joe Claussell proud".

  1. Feel Yo (4:09)
  2. Where They're From (4:33)
  3. Want You (5:14)
  4. Get Over (5:26)
Review: German percussionist Kolja Gerstenberg makes no attempt to hide his love for the drums on this razor sharp drop for Lumberjacks In Hell, building on his previous outings on Suol and Smile For A While. The drums are sizzling hot on "Feel Yo", tastefully overdriven and embellished with some MPC-style sample juggling that should satisfy those who like their house tracks hot as Dante's inferno. "Where They're From" is no slouch either, keeping the pressure up with a liberal dose of soul poured in for good measure. The keys and live bass on "Want You" add to the feverish mood, and then "Get Over" sends things spiraling out on a Latin-spiced cosmic journey.

  3. Robotalco - "No More Disco" (4:51)
  4. Klubbhuset - "SS0817" (6:11)
Review: The high grade, leftfield approach to house music Lyssna have set out as their MO continues in fine style on this new Colours series, starting with the Yellow EP and a strong cast of characters from the outer reaches. Riciar Ghir opens up proceedings with the tumbling deep house of "Cargo", making the keys dance with distinction and injection a subby rumble where it counts. Minimal Afrika follow that up with a percussive tryst entitled "Drakma Queen" that blossoms into a sumptuous ambient excursion. Robotalco takes a very different approach with some classically pumping sample-powered house music to shake feel-good fists to, and then Klubbhuset finishes up with an impassioned romp through peak time disco licks for the peak of the night.

Review: "We are happy to welcome Ghosts of the Sky in the family, 65th & Lawndale is a deep and strong track sitting in A side, magical chords, stomping bass and lush drums are the secret of this beauty, a future classic. On the other side, Melanin is a bit darker with its flowing pads and acidic bassline, really personnal. Acieeed, like you might imagine is a pure acid jam in its most classical form. A fantastic EP we are proud of."

Cat: TCB 03. Rel: 01 Dec 16
  1. Lights Out (7:02)
  2. High Flames (6:42)
  3. Flash Burn (6:26)
Review: Verona-based Patrick "Twice" Gibin is making a habit of collaborating with nu-jazz and broken beat veterans. Having previously joined forces with one-time Sonar Kollektiv regular Clara Hill, this E.P sees him acquire the services of killer keys-man Kaidi Tatham of Bugz In The Attic fame. The latter's smart, jazz-funk influenced riffs are all over the sweet, gently soulful and wonderfully positive deep house A-side "Lights Out", but can also be heard on the woozy, broken beat-goes-boogie flex of "High Flames". "Flash Burn", another musically rich, organic house groover - this time complete with what sound like eyes-closed guitar solos - completes an excellent package.
