Iliads Vol III
Iliads Vol III (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: ODYIL 003. Rel: 25 Sep 24
Beyond Measure (5:56)
Papillon (6:42)
Listen With Intelligence (6:45)
Review: Things don't get more old school than an Iliad, right? But would you expect levels any shallower from the label that originally brought us Source Direct 30 years ago? Of course not. And now into their third volume of this deep, atmospheric series, the vibe, tone and spirit are fully set and getting better with every dispatch. For this particular trio, Andy makes deliberate space for those outplanetary breaks, the overwhelming blasts of jazz and oceanic waves of pads and chords. From the tumbling toms and car chase shimmers of 'Beyond Measure' to the more sci-fi, streamlined spirit of 'Listen With Intelligence', this is another timeless and ultimately beautiful addition to the series.

Knot
Knot (12")
Cat: IMG 003. Rel: 09 May 24
Knot (12:38)
Backing It (7:15)
Review: Massive ambient intellijungle from UK producer One Touch, whose technical itch is evidently a difficult one to scratch. This EP is the third to be released by the mysterious Danish producer, and effortlessly lays claim to a highly respected career to come, dare we say continue. 'Knot' happily rests on a plane of indeterminacy, moving between stasis-echelons of pad and rattle, and bringing jungle back to its earlier, slightly slower-tempo'ed days, when faster pacing wasn't used to mask missed opportunities for flaunting rhythmic tekkers. One Touch pulls no punches on the variation front, with follow-upper 'Backing It' indulging the amen yet evincing no less finesse either.

The Alive EP
The Alive EP (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: SFR 025. Rel: 02 Jan 25
Alive (5:10)
Undergrowth (5:03)
Demon Poetry (5:08)
Keep Things Balanced (6:26)
Review: Silent Force are d&b classicists who always bring the quality with their timeless sounds. And that very much continues to be the case with this first release for the new year. It's a collab between Opal's and Kimbr that opens with 'Alive', a breakbeat lead banger with looping drums and raw snares. 'Undergrowth' is a silky number with a menacing late-night feel in the groaning pads and tense drums. 'Demon Poetry' brings some darker vibes with a prying, distorted, menacing bassline and 'Keep Things Balanced' is another well-controlled, potent drum & bass workout with jungle influences and a dystopian energy to it.

Planet Jazz (limited 12")
Cat: AGN7VN 003. Rel: 10 Nov 23
Planet Jazz (7:07)
Mezzo Forte (8:00)
Backyard Bustle (6:18)
Forward (7:14)
Review: Building on more than 20 years in the game, recent times have seen London-based junglist Opius exploring album formats and deeper strains within d&b and jungle on labels like Silent Force, Time Tunnel and his own Ballpark. Now he arrives on AGN7 Audio with a blistering exercise in experimental d&b that takes a broader look at what a breakbeat can be. The emphasis here is on jazz, as blasts of post bop drumming get sliced and diced into head-rushing constructions that feel as fresh as the first time you heard someone getting busy with an amen.

The Observatory
The Observatory (clear & black marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: UVB76 025. Rel: 23 Nov 22
The Observatory (5:45)
More Hardcore (5:40)
Minority Industrial Complex (6:10)
Review: Outer Heaven explores a range of tumbling tempos on this exploratory new EP for UVB-76 Music. 'The Observatory' has a grand scale - the drums ping about a wide stereo field, the fizzing synths, groaning vocals and scattered hits all cover a large area with you locked in the midst. 'More Hardcore' is a jungle cut that takes flight on dusty metal drum breaks as vocal apparitions and sci-fi effects dart about above. Closer 'Minority Industrial Complex' is a heavy and industrial dub with great height in the drums and a hint of dystopia never far away.
