Horace Andy - "Fever" (3:47)
Im & The Agg - "The Flue" (2:04)
Review: "Fever" is one of Horace Andy's biggest hits. Amazingly, it has never been given its own release so Studio One has done the right thing and put it out on a super loud 12" for the first time. It first landed way back in 1973 before Andy rose to contemporary fame appearing with Massive Attack on five of their albums, but still hits hard. The lush vocals sit well in the swinging drums and bass, and makes it a sure fire dance floor destroyer that won't hang around. Comes accompanied with a Cedric "Im" Brooks instrumental version on the flip.

Melbourne Douglas - "Wheel & Come Again" (3:16)
Review: The Original Gravity label's Reggae Dynamite series sure is packed full of dance floor heat. This fourth volume turns up the temperature once more, starting with Dave Barker's 'Move It On Now' with spoken word mic work over a guitar laced riddim. Woodfield Rd Allstars bring plenty of big horn energy and hints of ska to their 'San Salvario Stomp' then appear again on the flip with the organ-lead sounds of mid tempo wobbler 'Norwegian Wood'. Melbourne Douglas completes the picture with 'Wheel & Come Again', another raw as you like and classic sound.

Crazy In Kingston (7 Inch rework) (4:04)
Review: On the second volume in the GATT edits series, Swedish scalpel fiend Beatconductor once again pairs a previously unheard rework with something sought-after from his catalogue. In the latter category you'll find flipside 'Crazy in Kingston', an early noughties mash-up that adds Beyonce's superb lead vocals (and Jay-Z's on-point rap verse) from the peerless 'Crazy in Love' with a dusty old reggae riddim. It's a simple idea, beautifully executed. The brand-new (or at least previously unheard) cut this time around is 'Finger on the Trigger', a lolloping, life-affirming tweak of a 1970s dancefloor soul number that sits somewhere between the stomping heaviness of Detroit Soul and the proto-disco deliciousness of Philly Soul.

Review: The always well curated Rock A Shaka Japan comes through with another superb 7" here. 'Simmer Down' was the first single released by The Wailers, who were accompanied by the ska supergroup, The Skatalites, with production from the man, the legend, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd in 1963. It was the number one hit in Jamaica when it was released in February and was all about sending a message to violent gangs and crime lords to calm their fires. The excellent and lo-fi 'How Many Times' is a raw, real jam that swaggers to and fro with real spunk.

He collaborated with vocalist Marie Pierre back in the day on this one called 'Groovin', an absolutely uplifting and sun kissed lover's rock number that will hook you from the first note. Bentford All Stars - "Greedy G" (3:40)
Dub Specialist - "Granny Scratch Scratch" (3:57)
Review: For the latest in their series of "giant 45s" - loud 12" pressings of classic cuts from the Studio One vaults - Soul Jazz has decided to offer-up a fresh pressing of Brentford All Stars' 'Greedy G'. Based on James Brown classic 'Get On The Good Foot', the track was famously sampled by Boogie Down Productions on their iconic cut 'Jack of Spades'. It remains a bona fide party classic, adding a bass-heavy, Hammond-heavy reggae spin to Brown's insatiable funk groove. As it did the last time Soul Jazz issued it back in 1988, it comes backed with the deeper and more laidback 'Granny Scratch Scratch', another classic cut from Studio One's in-house backing band.

Review: Annette Brissett grew up in the USA even though she is a noted reggae vocalist. Her influences are the likes of Otis Redding and the Wailers and she also plays several instruments. 'Hard To Find' is one of her most well-known tunes and it pairs electronic reggae with prog rock guitars and her own soulful vocals. It's curious and compelling and has some funk deep in its bones. The version is provided by Wackies Rhythm Force who strip the vocals and make more of the noodling prog guitars and dubby swagger.

Jay Glass Dubs - "Milk & Honey" (dub) (5:37)
Review: Dennis Brown serve dup a real roots classic when he penned 'Milk and Honey.' It is a dub that still does damage and so has had a nice fresh reamster for 2022. It's an enduring anthem with plenty of praise for Jah. The prodigal comes with Clive Hunt's original 'Bitter Sweet' dub which he made under his Azul moniker. It's full of echoing synths and head melting pads as well as cavernous bass depths. On the B side, Jay Glass Dubs tackles the original with a warped sense of space and time as he deconstructs contemporary dub into something all new. Review: Robert "Dubwise" Browne is a skilled musician who can lay down perfect basslines, lovely keyboard overdubs and excite drum programming. H does all that and more on this super laidback and heartfelt dub for the Japanese label Vortex. 'Tracks of Love' is the sound of a lazy afternoon walk in the park with a new love, without a care in the world and hearts in your eyes. Review: Susan Cadogan's vocals are perfect for lovers' rock. She can go from real innocence to steamy sexuality in an instant and for that reason was quickly swooped up by Lee "Scratch" Perry back in the reggae heyday. On this one she's in a breezy mood, with soaring vocals and crystal clear delivery riding over a nice fresh rhythm. It is a modern reggae sound with digital production and bright synths over the rumbling drums and bass. The first tine is a proudly politically aware tune previously only avialbel on his 1987 album Tiger Born, while the single 'The Morning Show' has before now only been available as the B side of little known single 'I Have Seen Love In Your Eyes.' This one is coloured by disco and boogie with dazzling results. 'Moving On' has big horns over soul-stepping beats and retro 80s drum sounds. They're at it again on their latest "45", which opens with a storming, largely instrumental reggae-soul version of Edwin Starr's 1968 soul classic '25 Miles'. Their version - full of reverb-laden drums, fuzzy organ motifs, mazy solos, warming bass and JB's guitars - is naturally hugely different to Starr's version, but recognisably the same song. Their release 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You' finally changed that when it dropped initially back in 2023 and sold out in quick time so now gets reissued. The A-side reimagines Frankie Valli's classic with a laid-back reggae twist while the B-side takes on Crystal Waters' '90s dance anthem with surprising charm. Review: Breakbeat Paradise has got another one of its fun and functional new 7"s ready for your delectation here. It has a great backstory, too, that involves Berry Gordy taking some of his Motown stars on holiday to Jamaica in 1969. Some of them recorded with local musicians in the upcoming reggae scene but the sessions were though lost, until now. Well, it sounds like that could be true, but it isn't - in fact they are the work of Mako & Mr Bristow and are two crowd pleasing tunes with reggae, soul and funk deep in their bones. 'Uptight Boss' in particular is a timeless classic.

This Time I Know It's For Real (3:20)
Review: Sofia Manari and Inokasira Rangers are not strangers to working together on their own unique covers of some classic sounds, all reworked into fresh dub grooves. This time they turn their focus to 'First Love, which is a lush listen with Manari's soothing and sultry vocal delivery. On the flip is another laid-back dub sound with a constant rhythmic pulse, natty chords and more clean and soulful vocals from Manari making this a sweet little 7" from Japan's finest, Parktone.

Lively Up Yourself (2:52)
Review: For the hardcore Bob Marley collectors out there this is another essential 7" to add to your shelves. The limited edition yellow wax features an a-side that was produced by the late great Lee "Scratch" Perry. The track's lyrical refrain of "soul adventurer" became something of a lifelong motto for the former welder as he underwent his spiritual revolution. It's also one of the tunes that made him a firm favourite amongst musical mystics everywhere. The flipside 'Lively Up Yourself' is another personal ode to empowerment and enlightenment that rides a nice lazy rhythm.

Cora (2:48)
Review: It's time to do the Harlem Shuffle once more here and lock into the rhythms of Ray Martell. His 'She Caught The Train' is something of an early reggae classic that now makes its way onto 7" vinyl for the first time. It was originally released in 1970 on the Trojan sub-label Joe in the UK and then rose to fame once more as a cover version from UB40 in 1983. The original has been on a load of compilations but has never stood alone on wax. When it came first as a single it was backed with 'Tea House From Emperor Roscoe' by Dice The Boss but here the label adds a super rare Ray Martell song in the form of 'Cora'.

Peckings All Stars - "Tribute To Fela" (4:19)
Review: The Peckings label kicks off a new sub-series here with a special hand-stamped 7" that presents a couple of lovely, playful, happy reggae classics. The first is 'Silly Ska' from Gus McIntyre and is indeed drenched in ska influences from the swaggering rhythms to the busy keys that dance about the mix. On the flip side is the magnificent 'Tribute To Fela' which has Afro horns, Afro rhythms and plenty of sunny energy as well as conversational lead trumpets which do a great job of bringing to mind the Afro-beat king.

Crowded City

The Messengers - "Crowded City" (3:00)
Leslie Butler - "Strange Compulsion" (4:12)
Review: Most reggae heads are well aware of the work of the Rock A Shaka label and for good reason - it is a quality label that never drops a dud. This latest 7" comes from Leslie Butler and The Messengers, a busy band who know a thing or two about laying down authentic rhythms. They take care of the A-side which is a relatively uptempo with fat bass and drums sat perfectly in it. Natty riffs compliment the groove as do some subtle string souls, hand claps and vocal effects that layer up vocal snippets while the main vocal soars up top. Leslie Butler's 'Strange Compulsion' offers a summery reggae sound with spaced-out effects.

Impersonators - "I've Tried Before" (2:40)
Review: 'John Jones' dropped in 1968 on the Big Shot label after being produced and co-written by Derrick Harriott. It soon became a cult hit on the UK skinhead scene, its relentless rhythm and sharp lyrics making it an obvious anthem that was further cemented by its inclusion in the Tighten Up series. Impersonators then step up on the B-side with the yearning vocal reggae of 'I've Tried Before.' It's a lo-fi sound with hissing hi-hats and bubbling rhythms full of earthy soul. Rarely found in clean 7" copies, this one, so don't sniff at it.

You Think I'm A Fool

Hemsley Morris - "You Think I'm A Fool" (2:07)
Ernest Ranglin - "Heart Beat" (2:06)
Review: 'You Think I'm A Fool' is an original rocksteady heater from back in 1968 by Hemsley Morris. Produced by Clancy Eccles, it has become one of the most sought-after nuggets of its kind in the year since and now for the first time since its original release it is served up next to the instrumental version, 'Heart Beat,' by Ernest Ranglin. The a-side has super lo-fi sounds and muted organ stabs next to noodling bass and ass-wiggling drums, all topped off with an aloof vocal from Morris, while the version is a little more light-footed and airy. A crucial pick-up for your collection.

Review: In 2024, over 30 years after its release, Incognito's 1991 hit 'Crazy For You' has been reimagined by ONEGRAM with a stunning new arrangement. It brings out the soul with gorge vocals and lazy dub drums providing a perfect counterpoint. The B-side brings a vibrant twist featuring a groovier rhythm, ONEGRAM's signature horn section and lively steel pan melodies that blend Caribbean disco and reggae vibes. Adding to the fun, the ET Edit on the B-side is tailored for DJs and enhanced with tasteful effects for an energetic finish. This fresh take breathes new life into a beloved classic that showcases ONEGRAM's infectious sound.

Review: High Note/Onlyroots head back to 1978 for when The Paragons, a Jamaican vocal group mostly known for rocksteady tracks, linked with Jah Stone and Tommy McCook And The Supersonics for two scorching reggae tunes. On the a-side is 'Riding High' a nice earthy and authentic roller with a pained lead and lush backing singing that gets you in a vibe. Flip it over and 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy' is a subtly tweaked version that gives more weight to the vocals. Both are well worth copping.

Track 2 (3:04)
Review: Inokasira Rangers aka Park Rangers laid down this curious festive reggae rhythm in 2019. It was written by American musician and song writer Todd Rundgren who could do everything from pop to soul to metal. Here his tune 'I Saw The Light' gets flipped into a real curio with harmonica leads, rolling drums that are tropical and exotic and a good time vibe that is fun and playful. 'Track 2' sounds like a DIY dub with naive chords and natty melodies that are good for the soul.

Reggae Music (instrumental) (5:55)
Review: This 12" on Kalita marks first ever official reissue of the highly sought after Michael Paul reggae-soul-disco gem 'Reggae Music.' It is something of a megabit that never was after first coming on the New York-based Revolver Records. Since then it has been hard to find, and even if you do find a copy, many are said to have some real sound quality issues. Either way it is now a bit of a grail for a certain sort of DJ so to have it here, remastered and nice and loud, is big news. As well as the languid and steamy original, there is a killer dub version on the flip.
