  1. Au Velodrome 141 (5:17)
  2. Glasfabrik (4:41)
  3. Capataz (2:51)
Review: Dark Entries has been at the forefront of the coldwave and synth revival that has slowly taken hold over the last decade. Next up they turn their attention to a reissue of an out of print EP from 1988 by Jordi Guber and Krishna Goineau as Velodrome. Villalobos has been known to drop cuts from it, which should give you a good idea of its musical style: freaky 80s electro built on steppy drums, with taut and twanging synths reverberating around the mix, as exemplified by the opener. "Glasfabrik" is a hyper-speed cut with a tongue in cheek vocal, while "Capataz" is the most well-known joint with its acid bass and crashing hits.

Golden Taurus EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: COTF 11. Rel: 31 Oct 16
  1. Golden Taurus (5:47)
  2. Topaz Fear (7:02)
  3. Death Wish (6:50)
  4. Golden Taurus (Heinrich Dressel remix) (5:52)
Review: Crimes Of The Future is the kind of label you can trust, no matter who is at the controls. The same could be said for Giallo Disco, and certainly the two labels orbit a similar space for lurid soundtrack-inspired hardware jams from the Italo age. Vercetti Technicolor is one half of the Giallo team alongside Antoni Maiovvi, and here steps out with a perfectly bombastic range of compositions that revel in B-movie brilliance. "Golden Taurus" is the perfect slow-burner, those mono bass notes warming like no soft synth ever could, while "Topaz Fear" brings a more action-driven sequence into the mix. "Death Wish" too opts for a pumped up club scenario, while Heinrich Dressel smokes out "Golden Taurus" into a seedy slow-jam.

  1. Hard Pill (6:26)
  2. Tenebrosity (5:17)
  3. Voice Of Darkness (4:46)
  4. She Does (7:50)
Review: Label co-founder Gianni Vercetti Balopitas aka Vercetti Technicolor returns to Giallo Disco after the Black September LP. Here he presents the soundtrack to 'the psychedelic neon-soaked slasher short' Hard Pill. Directed by Daniel Freedman, Balopitas' Fulci meets Digweed score takes you from Mainetti to Martinez. Drugged out club hits and tense shadowed corridor atmospherics. The title track's dark romance is epic suspense and moodlighting reminiscent of the great John Carpenter while B side electro cut "Voice Of Darkness" goes down the same gothic brooding path as Visonia. It all comes to a thrilling climax on the slow burning closer "She Does" full on rich vintage synth flar, ricocheting Linn drums drenched in gated reverb and the most razor sharp arpeggios you'll ever hear. Alongside Timothy J Fairplay's LP on Charlois, we'd rate this as one of the 2017's finest offerings for new wave Italo fiends and retroverts.

Maritime Tatami (12" + lyric insert)
Cat: DE 055. Rel: 13 Jan 14
  1. Maritime Tatami
  2. A Game Of Despair
Review: Having released over fifty records since their foundation back in 2009, Dark Entries use the widened exposure afforded by that excellent Patrick Cowley compilation released in the last quarter of 2013 as a springboard to launch a new dedicated 12" series. Retaining their archival approach, the first release focuses on the short-lived Italian act Victrola; formed as a four piece combo in Messina, Victrola slimmed down to the synthesizer and guitar-based duo Antonio "Eze" Cuscina and Carlo Smeriglio and moved to the fertile music scene growing in early 80s Florence. In 1983, the pair issued their one record-shaped contribution to the early 80s Italian synth scene in the shape of Maritime Tatami, a two-track 12? issued on the Electric Eye label. Recorded using the Roland TR303 and TR606 at a time when these models had only been made available, so this reissue of Maritime Tatami from Dark Entries offers a chance for people to assess a slice of analogue experimentation at its most nascent.

Sour EP (12")
Cat: MNQ 049. Rel: 03 Sep 14
  1. Sour
  2. Sour (Vanzetti & Sacco remix)
  3. 20-20
Review: Initially a duo responsible for a sole 7" release on Blind Prophet, Void Vision re-emerges here as the sole project of Shari Vari on this sublime 12" for the excellent Mannequin Records. The three track Sour precedes a debut Void Vision LP for the Berlin-based operation which is apparently due later this year and we cannot wait based on the sounds explored here. Lead track "Sour" is a ripe and muscular Italo track which is profoundly danceable and wholly erotic, whilst the accompanying remix from Bordello A Parigi pair Vanzetti & Sacco does a splendid job in magnifying more dancier elements of Void Vision's production. The full throttle instrumental thrust of closing track "20/20" will please fans of Void Vision's earlier work though we are more focused on what she's going to do next!

  10. Foot & Mouth - "I Want My Mummy" (4:15)
Review: An intriguing confection put together by two Antipodean crate-diggers with an ear for the eccentricities and heroic creative travails of a generation of yore, 'Midnight Spares' chronicles a predominantly '80s era in which bedroom musicians took a post-punk DIY sensibility to create work that still rings out with originality and ingenuity decades on. Collected from manifold unusual sources, this compendium takes in early synth-pop, menacing lo-fi soundtrack work, a stray emigre member of The Flying Pickets, and even an early foray into recording from the members of legendary Ozpunk scamps God. Lurking somewhere between the spirit of John Peel and the world of outsider art, the resulting assemblage is a must-have for chroniclers of the weird and wonderful.

  11. Fad Gadget - "Back To Nature" (5:51)
Review: With the renewed attention surrounding industrial and EBM in the last few years (and its influence on techno, again), it's important that someone with credentials gives the new generation a decent history lesson. Fitting that Berghain resident and MDR boss Marcel Dettmann curates a compilation of classics from the sound's heyday: here's someone who actually lived through it. As part of Amsterdam imprint Dekmantel's Selectors Series, these gems from yesteryear should certainly set the record straight and provide solid reference points for new school retroverts. Highlights (and there's many) include: Belgian EBM legends Front 242 with "Don't Crash", Philadelphia industrial underdogs Executive Slacks' "So Mote It Be" and the mandatory Cabs track comes in the form of "Low Cool" (the Marcel Dettmann Edit, no less). It wouldn't be a proper industrial comp without a bit of Wax Trax! would it? Label staples Ministry appear with their 1982 song "Same Old Madness", a period in the band's history that some consider their finest.

Review: When it comes to compilation making there's probably no two safer names in the art than Strut Records and Optimo's JD Twitch (and maybe the one Trevor Jackson too). This time around though, surprise surprise, Twitch collides a choice selection of oddball rarities and mythical classics from Germany's original post-punk and DIY scene, and in the process gives the behemoth Vinyl-on-demand label a dashing run for its money. There's a staggering amount of music to be discovered here that will send your mind running down one of Berlin's dank strasses or a Dresden ditch, but after hearing tracks like "Your Turn To Run" by Malaria! or Twitch's own edit of Christiane F "Wunderbar" you may be left wondering why you've been listening to Talking Heads and "Eisbear" this whole time.

Review: Originally out in 2012, Cliff Martinez's soundtrack to Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive was a smash hit. While this might not seem out of the ordinary, that is actually no small feat in this day and age; soundtracks have all too often become dispensable and it is rare for people to talk about one with the same sort of praise as this particular thriller. The lead tune is, of course, Kavinsky and Lovefoxx's "Nightcall", a song that is still getting significant playback these days, and one which makes for a strong contender to the best material from electro-pop acts like Daft Punk. "A Real Hero" by College has also made it into the big league since the film's release, along with a number of absolutely timeless, pop-infused r&b ballads like "Tick Of The Clock" by The Chromatics. Cliff Martinez's own material features prominently at the tail-end, of course. A hotly recommended 2 hours of music to accompany any sort of mood.

Review: When they were asked to put together the latest volume in the "DJ Kicks" series, Mount Kimbie boys Dominic Maker and Kai Campos drew influence from their recent gigs DJing in support of Actress. As a result, their hugely enjoyable 9-track mix tends towards the experimental and off-kilter. The pair touches on a myriad of styles, including ambient, industrial-era experimentalism, South American influenced tropical drum jams, spacey modular techno, raw-edged peak-time jams, mind-altering acid weirdness and intergalactic electro. Highlights are plentiful, from the hypnotic intensity of Object Blue, to the skewed warmth of Severed Heads and the dream-like weirdness of their own exclusive contribution, "Southgate".

Review: This fine compilation from Regis' Downwards label has been trailed as a kind of "family portrait" of where the imprint stands in 2019, offering a slew of exclusive tracks including a heap of cross-generational collaborations. There is plenty to set the pulse racing throughout the collection. "EBM supergroup" You Hung impresses via the moody and clanking, mid-80s industrial vibes of "The Truth Was Different (Live)", while Obelus' "Scale Reference" sounds like Richard D James after a particularly potent bong hit. Simon Shreeve's "The Space Between Cultures" is a creepy slab of ambient/noise fusion, Layne's "Raising Up, Removal" is a delightfully out there journey into metallic electro headiness and DVA Damas' sub-heavy cut "People Say I'm Cool" is as stylish and, let's face it, cool as the title suggests.

Review: Stroom's latest chunk of left-of-centre brilliance comes from Jan Van Der Broeke, an artist active since the 1980s who's arguably most famous for his work under the Absent Music, June 11 and The Misz aliases. 11,000 Dreams is his first career retrospective and draws on 30 years worth of self-released cassettes and CD-Rs. It's a sublime set, all told, pulling together dreamy, evocative, melodious and soft-touch tracks that blur the boundaries between ambient, skewed downtempo pop, blissful warmth, spoken word laden cheeriness (the odd but brilliant "My Lesbian Girlfriends") and spacey cuts laden with exotic instrumentation and whistling synthesizer melodies.

Review: By now, we should all know the story of Tony Wilson's ultimately doomed Factory Records imprint; the rags-to-riches-to-rags story of the design-conscious Manchester imprint, excesses and all, has been written many times over. Strut's initial FAC. DANCE compilation, curated with love by walking dance music encyclopedia Bill Brewster and released last year, also documented the label's attempts to court the dancefloor. The first FAC DANCE collection told its story well, focusing not only the hits, but also the underground records that became anthems at the Hacienda and beyond. For every "Love Tempo", "Dirty Disco", "Love On A Hilltop" or "Reach For Love", there was something a little odd, usually from either the Durutti Column or Biting Tongues. It was hardly exhaustive, but then condensing a decade of influential and inspired releases onto two discs is nigh on impossible. It's for this reason - and, we assume, the commercial success of that first volume - that Strut have decided to put together a second volume of Factory dance classics and rarities, FAC DANCE 02. This time, the script is altogether different. With many of the more familiar post-punk and straight-up Factory dance releases previously featured in the first collection, FAC Dance 02 needed to dig deeper. To do that, Strut have recruited former Factory Benelux boss James Nice, a man who knows more about the ins and outs of the Factory back catalogue than most. Over the last few years, his LTM label has lovingly reissued a number of classic, long-forgotten Factory albums from the likes of Quando Quango and A Certain Ratio. FAC Dance 02 might be lacking in stone cold hits or accessible hooks but those seeking these should already have invested in the label's inaugural retrospective or perhaps stick to "Blue Monday". It does however contain some thrilling and genuinely historic music, presented in consummate fashion by an expert on the subject. For that reason alone, it should be essential listening.

Review: The guys over at Stones Throw did us a massive favour this year by compiling these long-forgotten experimental pieces form the 80s and 90s. This is the second chapter and we couldn't have expected any better from Peanut Butter Wolf's imprint. There's plenty of rarities and gems here, starting with with the opener by Hard Cops, "Dirty" an italo-influenced electro stomper with an unmistakable 80s edge to it. Philippe Laurent's "Distortion" is another massive track, with those wavering lyrics falling apart over the grinding beat beneath it; "HSTA" by Das Ding is also unmissable and worthy of any collectors shelf. To be honest, there isn't a single average piece here and if you haven't got this compilation already, you're making a huge mistake...

The Bay Area Retrograde series from Dark Entries and this second chapter particularly, showcases San Francisco's buzzing post-punk and noise scene of the early 1980's, so we're talking real pioneering stuff here! There's everyone from Factrix to the legendary Tuxedomoon, but also some lesser known and more obscure names such as Chrome - a truly badass outfit if you ask us. Dark Entries couldn't have done a better job and this is the leftfield pick of the week from us!

Review: Minimal Wave present their first double vinyl selection since their breakthrough Minimal Wave Tapes compilation released in conjunction with Stones Throw a few years back. This time Veronica Vasicka and company switch their focus to the cult mid 80s Swedish synth cassette compilation Orgelvark. The 23 tracks spread across the two heavy weight 160g slabs of vinyl give a newly remastered look at the multifaceted music which surfaced from the underground tape scene in Sweden, bridging the gaps between outright synth pop, industrial music and more. This vinyl edition includes five unreleased tracks, along with a rather enlightening letter from the compiler Tor Sigvardson as well as detailed band notes across the gatefold sleeve. It makes for an enlightening peak at the fledgling beginnings of Swedish synth based music, a genre which these days is stronger than ever.

Before restrictive genre definitions saw different modes of expression streamlined, the options were wide open in the lawless surge of post punk and industrial culture. This finely curated compilation from PIAS provides an excellent overview of some of the deadliest operators from this wildly creative time - the names involved are integral to the development of electronic music in the 80s. Throbbing Gristle, DAF, Cabaret Voltaire, Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Meat Beat Manifesto - just some of the legendary names shown in their best light on this essential collection.

Review: New wave archivists Medical Records continue to trawl through the epic back catalogue of Survival Records, which was one of the UK's leading alternative electronic imprints during the 1980s. The label's combination of far-sighted, left-of-centre synth-pop, eccentric instrumentals and rougher, dancefloor-focused fare is much in evident in this fourth retrospective compilation. Highlights include, but are not limited to, the dark, slap bass-propelled wooziness of The Limit's "Shock Waves", the arpeggio-heavy, Mascara-clad throb of 13 At Midnight's "Other Passengers" and the deliciously cheery, lo-fi synth-pop/electro-funk fusion of "Surface Tension" by Analysis. Throw in a couple of killer cuts from NYC legend Richard Bone and you've got an essential collection of quirky, early '80s electronic cuts.

Review: If you're into your '80s cold/no wave filth then Medical's Electroconvulsive Therapy series are the tickets for you! The fearless reissue label have put out seriously definitive collections of the post-punk era, ranging from vocal-led synth-pop to more industrial and cavernous proto-techno beats, and this third chapter of the ET branch - an RSD 2015 special - is another gorgeous ten tracks of rare-as-hell experimental music from the golden era of creativity. You can hear shreds of Joy Division's massive influence on 80's music in tracks like "Who Cares" by Leidenschaft or "Betrayal" by Secession. However, there's also plenty of disco/boogie-filtered action on cuts like "Look!" by VUD and "The Cities Of The Red Night", another track from Leidenschaft. It's a compilation for romantics, a sector of society who is in love with that era's sense of bittersweet melancholia. Lovely.

Review: Domestica presents a vinyl version of Oscar's X-mas Carols. For this album's tracklist, Jordi Serrano and Oscar Smit made a personal selection from the three previous cassettes which were originally released on Christmas Day 1984, 1985 and 1987 respectively by Smit's imprint Noel Tapes in Holland. The 15 tracks here are a selection of the best tracks of these three cassettes, mastered from the originals by Ruud '66' Lekx. It also features a cover painting by Max Kisman, laminated translucent sleeve and is hand stamped. Complete with dossier including liner notes by Smit, band bios, photos and download code, it's allegedly the only experimental Christmas compilation ever published.

Review: Over the last two or three years, New York's Minimal Wave outpost has focussed on releasing plenty of new music that fits in line with their unashamedly 'cold-wave' approach, and this has opened them to a whole variety of listeners and DJs. However, in our opinion, where they truly shine is in providing the underground masses with compilations such as this latest The Bedroom Tapes: A Compilation Of Minimal Wave From Around The World 1980-1991, a glorious snapshot of all the very best slices of lo-fi that has largely gone unnoticed to the modern eye. Of course, the majority of these tunes are now expensive in their original formats, but we're taking about a small crew of Discogs sharks who are upping the prices. Here, you're able to properly - and peacefully - enjoy some of the very best minimal machine-drum soul from peeps like Karen Marks, Vorgruppe, Perfect Mother and Aural Indifference, among others. This truly is a feast for the modern digger. Excellent.
