One Way No Replay (Meat Beat Manifesto remix) (5:08)
Stop/Begin Again (Meat Beat Manifesto remix) (3:12)
Review: First released in 2022, post-punk and industrial music legend Stephen Mallinder (half of Cabaret Voltaire for 40 years) returned for another collaboration with Eric Random (a storied post-punk UK musician in his own right) for the short EP 'Deadeye', consisting of two non-eponymous tracks, 'One Way No Run' and 'Stop / Begin Again'. Combining hypnotic rhythms, trembly synthwork and raucous whisper-singing, the songs form part of a series of releases from Eric Random for 2022-23 on the label eMERGENCY heARTS: an anarchist-run, indie collaborative media hub in Austin, Texas, spotlighting post-punk, outsider and non-genre specific music with political and darkwave aesthetics. Now reissued in late 2023 by Greece's very own Kinetik, the new version of the release hears two whopping and unprecedented remixes from Meat Beat Manifesto, who's remained at the bleeding edge of the fusion of said genres, together with IDM and techno, since he started out. The tracks are completely upended; flaymorphosed out from their original broken beaty, clean sensibilities and into far grittier and dirtier sonic gutters, ducts, bung pipes and vents.

Protection Now!
New Purpose (extended version)
Protection Now! (demo)
Want Need (live)
Publicity (demo)
Review: After last year's brooding 7", Regis and Silent Servant return to Minimal Wave with their Sandra Electronics project and to be honest, we couldn't be more excited. Hearing what these two techno leviathans are up to in their more industrial modes is both a privilege and a pleasure to the ear-drums. Exploring the genre-less corners of coldwave and post-punk, this six-track EP is probably one if this year's hottest releases so far. From the crisp, metallic drum twists of "It Slipped Her Mind" to the almost Middle-Eastern sounds of "Protection Now!", and the noisy, Gristle-like bounce of "Publicity (demo)", it's a total winner in our books. You also get a live version of "Want Need", where the duo culminate into total insanity and tie things off in fine style. Are these two going to concentrate on this kind of stuff form now one? We hope so, this is it. Highly recommended.

Carousel (4:18)
Over (3:14)
Levitate (3:57)
Folded Hands (4:47)
Review: It's no wonder Idee Fixe references Synth Britannia in the notes for this debut album from Sauna. Nodding to a BBC documentary that charts the genesis, and subsequent chart rise of synth pop across the UK, while in many ways what's here feels far removed from the retro-futurism of The Human League and peers, there's a DIY atmosphere that more than bridges the gap. Natural talent making raw ideas sound machine tight.

'Carousel' is the perfect example. Opiate lyrical delivery and loose, low-slung rhythm bely the taught framework holding everything together. 'Over' matches for sharpness, taking the tempo down a notch and upping the glittering effects that make this entire record a kind of rhythm & blues-electronic hybrid, only getting deeper and more engrossing on 'Levitate' and 'Folded Hands', like a much more accessible, poppier offspring of Silver Apples.

Review: Schiksal is a project from Rudi Huybrechts, a small-town Belgium resident who devoted the 80s to learning his craft as an electronic dance music producer. He got his break in 1988 when Marc Grouls played his track '24 Hours' at Antwerp nightspot Prestige, and thus this record came to be. It's absolutely of the new beat era, but has a certain unconventional flair which often comes with those from more provincial backgrounds. Mecanica have gathered together the source material and commissioned some fresh remixes to round out this essential package for any lovers of The Sound Of Belgium.

Review: Cult TV buffs will no-doubt pick up on the 'Shatterday' reference here, name of the first episode of the first season of the 1980s reboot of The Twilight Zone. In turn, that borrowed its title from a collection of short stories by Harlan Ellison, which arrived at the beginning of the same decade, which contains the tale 'Jeffty Is Five', once voted as the finest short story of all time. Agree or not, the programme and publication go some way to preparing you for the sounds on this expansive Kinetik Greece release. Still none the wiser? Simply put, these are tunes that have one foot in the future, and another in the past, specifically the last time culture in general was as obsessed with what could be coming in the next half century. 1980s hues saturate many parts of here, somewhere between coldwave, downtempo synth, experimental electro, and movie score.

Death Of Decadence (4:29)
Review: Longtime techno innovator Silent Servant finds himself on the cult Hospital Productions to close out this year in visceral fashion. 'Harm In Hand' is many things - dark wave synth and jittery techno and it even has a hint of jerking EBM rhythms. It's a trip back to the future on a pulsing wave of menace. 'Damage' then cuts more loose, with spraying synths and crashing hits trapping you in dystopia and 'Death Of Decadence' bring all manner of raw textures, twisted synth lines and stark drums to a line techno groove.

Review: ** Repress ** If you've been keeping abreast of all things Minimal Wave this year, you'll probably have picked up on Veronica Vasicka hinting at a forthcoming split release from Silent Servant and Broken English Club, the new project from UK techno man Oliver Ho. We've certainly been eagerly awaiting it her at Juno HQ and it's great to see Violence And Divinity live up to and surpass these expectations! Silent Servant mans the A Side with two tracks that will be familiar to anyone that's been lucky enough to catch his live sets of late, indeed it's almost too easy to visualise the flashing strobes as the pummelling EBM lines of "Cut Unconscious" unravel and beat you down. The two accompanying productions from Ho's Broken English Club dovetail nicely, but veer off into more wave orientated territory, with "Divinity" sounding quite like some of the earlier material put out by In Aeternam Vale. In a word superb.

Review: Domestica continues its on-going trawl through the archives of S.M Nurse, an Amsterdam-based synth-wave trio who recorded a serious amount of material between 1980 and '83 before all but vanishing. That's The Body gathers together a quartet of dancefloor-friendly excursions. On the A you'll find the stylized minimal wave/electrofunk fusion of "That's The Body" and wavy, high-tempo thrust of "Off & On", both of which originally appeared on the band's earliest release. On the flip you'll find two previously unreleased versions of similarly vintage tracks: the alien synths, woozy B-52s vocals and tough machine drums of "Mort Automatique", and the hazy melancholy of "Frutta", which boasts a particularly druggy arpeggio bassline.

Review: The truly special thing about a track like 'Tainted Love' is its malleability over time. The original elements touch on New Romanticism, New Wave, electro, and synth pop, creating a twisted and mutated version of the crooning troubadour that smacks of sticky dancefloor heat in subterranean haunts.

With that in mind a remix collection could pretty much go anywhere, and in many ways this one does. Presenting several interpretations of this timeless and iconic tune, these range from the not-so-different instrumental and the strikingly powerful but simple acapella, through to DJ Hell's typically growly stomper, and the groovier, wavier Jack Ford and Jaimieson Hill cut. Oh, and don't forget the very DIY sounding bonus track, 'The Hungry Years', which is a whole different story in its own right, so we'll leave you to discover that one.

Review: The birth point of ecstasy in British music is usually credited to acid house and the second summer of love: a cemented vision of kids sweating and vibrating in clubs, fields and warehouses in 1988, united by universal empathy and mind-popping sounds. However, in 1981, a couple of young men from Leeds went to New York, discovered the drug in its infancy, fused its' gritty synth pop to acid house's squelchy 303 groove and recorded an album - Soft Cell's Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret. The rest, as they say, is history.

Review: Los Angeles-based gothic/industrial label Cleopatra present a cute limited pink 7" vinyl here, featuring Soft Cell's synthpop classic 'Tainted Love' from 1981 - and there's not much else that needs to be said about this golden oldie. But the real jewel here is the lesser known cut on the flip, where Soft Cell's Marc Almond teams up with gothic rock icon Andi Sex Gang on the undergound cult classic 'The Hungry Years', which orginally appeared on The Whip compilation on Kamera Records back in 1983. Hearing this quirky yet seductive low slung groove is worth it for the price alone.

Review: Soft Estate's debut album is the 5th release on Gothenburg label 'Mammas Mysteriska Jukebox', released alongside the sophomore Thomas Bush record as the first external records for the label. The band are brand new and information is scarce, with 'Time Is Away's Jack Rollo describing them as so: "Soft estate are a band I don't know. Their songs are here and gone, gauzy, blank and romantic. This record is a brief heady waltz through a hall of mirrors. Drum machines tick past, oil and water synths swirl by and a sleepy solemn voice sings. The reflections of 40 years of art-school electronics are pulled and twisted into new shapes". The hazy female vocals against delayed synths in 'Echo' stick out as a particular highlight - the oscillation of audio like the rolling of the tide.

Too Many People (alt version)

Review: Nothing but gorgeousness seems to characterise the work of the Minimal Wave imprint over the recent years. It's a label that is both unpredictable and continuously elegant in its choice of reissues. This time, it's a wonderful unearthing of Soma Holidays cult-hit, Shake Your Molecules. The Franco-American duo was part of Brooklyn's clique of artists throughout the 1980's, and although their sound is firmly representative of that era, the tracks are still ridiculously fresh and seductive both in their melodies and vocals. The title track is a sort of synth-pop tune gone wrong in a good way, where drugged-up lyrics meets morphing synths and metallic drum machines, whereas the Dub cut could easily be played in most techno DJ sets these days. On the B-side, we have the charming, atmospheric glow of "Too Many People" and "Art Dimension", the top pick in our opinion and one which is screaming to be be remixed into a contemporary house tune.

Review: In 1988, German siblings Ernst and Hans-Peter Stroer joined forces with Howard Fine and Nadeen Holloway to produce Kunstdisco Seoul, an EP of synth-pop/neo-classical/Euro-house fusion. "Night Falls", a cheery tribute to mid-to-late '80s Prince, was arguably the EP's strongest moment. Here, it gets the reissue treatment, with the tasty original version being joined by a trio of fresh remixes. Mudegg serves up two interpretations: the jaunty electrofunk-goes-synth-pop flex of the "Machine Mix" and the Balearic nu-disco inspired "Alpha Wave Mix". While these are both fine, the version that really stands out comes from German boogie revivalists First Touch. Their take - an authentic tribute to glistening NYC synth-boogie complete with vintage synthesizers and clattering drum machines - is almost worth the entrance money on its own.

Review: Minimal Wave are proud to present a 12" EP by UK band, Sudeten Creche. The EP includes their cult song Are Kisses Out Of Fashion? (originally released on the 1982 compilation EP Europe in the Year Zero), as well as an unreleased version of Kindergarten (the original version was released on Illuminated Records in 1983). The songs are from their original tape reels, and they're pure electropop bliss.

Review: In typical Music From Memory fashion, their latest archival release shines a light on one of the UK's lesser-known bands of the early 1980s. The System released a lone single in 1981, followed by a now incredibly rare debut album, Logic, in 1983. Three of the cuts here are taken from that set, including the dreamy, downbeat Balearic-pop opener "Almost Grown" - a wonderfully evocative six minutes, all told - and the far-sighted, spacey, proto-techno shuffler "Vampirella". This EP also includes one previously unreleased track, "Find It In Your Eyes", which was rescued from long-forgotten master tapes during the licensing process.

Review: Japan is well known for its pretty out there contemporary arts and culture, a country that, during the 20th Century, reinvented itself, transforming the outward image from that of a historic imperial power ruled by tradition to a arguably the nation most prepared for the future to arrive. This is evident in many areas, not east children's entertainment, as this rather obscure outing goes to show.

'Computer Obaachan' was originally featured on the show Everyone's Song, whereby musicians, often high profile and rather influential, would make appearances, singing and performing work aimed squarely at keeping little ones glued. In this instance, that name was the legendary Ryuichi Sakamoto, who, among other things, is known for the innovative back catalogue of Yellow Magic Orchestra. Thanks to his involvement, the song, and its B-side made a few years later for a high quality vinyl single release catalysed by popular demand, has become something of a cult collector's item. So here's your chance to collect.
