Review: Northentic Records welcome back cult UK rapper Blade for a link up with producer Seek The Northerner that delivers messages of gratitude in arresting fashion . The signature boom bap production of Seek underpins the whole a-side, while he also adds his own verse which pays tribute to his collaborative partner here. World Champion turntablist DJ Woody layers in plenty of scratches to add some old school cool and engineering from No Sleep Nigel ensures it all sounds super fresh. It you want it even more direct and raw, the flip side instrumental has you covered.

Review: Another 5 Boroughs Breaks release means another gold standard hip-hop banger. This one is from
The High & Mighty duo who hailed from Phillie and were active in the nineties. Their 'Dirty Decibels' is a sleazy joint with prying bass and sliding drums that get under your skin. The rhymes flow smooth and the samples are sweet. Flip it over and you'll find where they come from - a rare library music tune by Simon Haseley called 'Hammerhead.' It's a 60s gem with harps, horns and serene strings that make for a luxuriant sound.

Wanawake (B-STOCK)
Cat: SWAMPX 1 (B-STOCK). Rel: 21 May 20
Review: ***B-STOCK: Outer sleeve torn and corner creased, but product in perfect working order***

It's easy to see why Loefah snapped up this single for Swamp 81. For starters, bass-heavy beat-maker Sumgii has already contributed a number of killer missives to the label's digital catalogue, and "Wanawake" contains one of his fattest beats to date - a sparse, warped, sub-heavy affair that sits somewhere between regular hip-hop and 21st century grime. Then there's the fine bi-lingual English/Swahili rap that sits atop it from Nah Eeto, a rising star of Kenya's blossoming underground. Her style and delivery is distinctive and on-point, working in perfect harmony with Sumgii's killer backing track. Loefah naturally supplies the obligatory remix, placing Eeto's vocal atop a crunchy bed of hip-house style James Brown breaks and stirring synthesizer chords.

Review: DJ Soopasoul's last mash-up was an inspired affair that saw him perfectly fuse tracks by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB and the Beastie Boys. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip hop classic "How High" atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from Clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie party-starting floor-heater "Superstitioun". It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the Hip Hop vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonderful jam.

Review: Earlier in the decade, Bobby "S-Type" Perman impressed all and sundry with a series of inspired EPs that put kaleidoscopic synths, chopped and screwed beats and fuzzy bass tones front and centre. Listening to "Beat" - the Scottish producer's first release for four years - it seems little has changed. Its six tracks are as vibrant, thrilling and entertaining as ever, offering a mangled mix of future R&B motifs, recycled '80s synths, stuttering trap beats, off-kilter hip-hop grooves, weighty analogue bass and glassy-eyed, sharply chopped vocal samples. There's little revelatory here, despite a keen sense of adventure, but Perman remains a superb beat-maker whose work still stands out from the crowd.

  1. Dance To The Beat (3:13)
  2. Treacherous Love (3:07)
Review: DJ P and the Breakbeat Junkie have been working together as Second Hand Audio for well over a decade, though this contribution to the Toxic Funk series - the fourth in total, fact fans - marks their first joint appearance on Breakbeat Paradise. In keeping with the series' party-starting ethos, A-side 'Dance to the Beat' sees them cannily combine chunky funk breaks with old school hip-hop snippets, vintage soul vocal lifts and jangly instrumental samples from what sounds like a breezy cover version of the Jacksons' 'ABC' (but probably isn't). The smile-inducing fun continues on flipside jam 'Treacherous Love', a slower, hip-hop-tempo number that peppers a head-nodding beat and funk-rock guitars with vocals from an all-star rap number.

Crate Breaks Vol 2
Cat: DS 702. Rel: 16 Jan 20
  1. Crate Breaks Three (5:02)
  2. Crate Breaks Four (5:20)
Review: Released late last year, Dirty Drum Productions first "Crate Breaks" seven-inch offered up two sides of cut-and-paste drum breaks - with gaps in between - for turntablists to play around with. This second salvo follows a similar blueprint. What you get is a series of celebrated (and in some cases lesser-known) breakbeats lifted from rock, funk and soul records, EQ'd and re-mastered for maximum loudness. These breaks - arranged into loose "tracks" as "Crate Breaks 3" and "Crate Breaks 4" - are clean enough to either sample, or use during turntablist routines. If you buy two copies, you can even "double up" with them and create fresh backing tracks for the MC of your choice.

Review: In his career to date, Jim Sharp has proved to be one of the bootleg remix and mash-up scene's smartest and most successful producers - a man capable of brilliantly breathing new life into a string of familiar favourites. He's at it again here, offering up fresh reconstructions of N.W.A's gangster rap classic "F*ck Tha Police". The killer flip is his A-side "Main Mix", in which he places the L.A crew's iconic acapella over a jumpy, party starting hip-hop beat rich in sampled short funk guitar riffs, snare and kick-heavy drums, James Brown style yelps and tight scratches. It's a great beat - so good, in fact, that the flipside instrumental mix is equally as essential as the club-rocking vocal version.

Review: Jim Sharp slows things down a little with a pair of edits from the American South. Early West Coast gangsta hit "Dopeman" is the subject of side a with original drums but extended breaks designed to get the floor pumping. On the flip is a dirty south classic with prickling 808 kicks and hi hats that hit hard. It's super sweet soul music with raw grooves that can get any party started topped with vocals from Willie Hutch finishing things off in real style.

Review: SimonAyEm has been collecting records and generally immersing himself in rap for a quarter of a century. He makes his own beats, held a rap show on Swiss national and here one of his homemade demos is presented on Burning Sole. The first version was a raw, made in the kitchen jam with rough drums and noodling keys next to a heady whistle, while the flip side is a more refined lounge version with a fuller, richer, warmer sound and more steamy chords, as well as a hook sung by the producer's own young son. Nice.

Review: Terry Slingbaum was once a little-known ghost writer and session musician. Now, thanks to this all-star debut EP, he's now one of the most talked-about debutant artists on the planet. The Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist has pulled out all the stops on his first EP, opening proceedings with a startling chunk of creepy, unsettling, jazz-flecked electronica that boasts sublime lead vocals from Erykah Badu and D'Angelo ('Rehoove'). The track that follows, 'Strangers', is fronted by FKA Twigs and boasts a brilliant mixture of deep, languid instrumentation, jazzy guitars and horizontal trip-hop beats, while B-side 'Morphine' is otherworldly opiate soul featuring great vocal turns from Damon Albarn, Bilal and Syd. It's a genuinely surprising EP for sure, but also borderline brilliant. Don't sleep!

Here the track is given a 2020 makeover courtesy of hired hands DJ Spinna and Jazz Spastiks. Spinna naturally opts for a distinctively "Golden era" vibe, laying the Motor City crew's raps over a relaxed, head-nodding beat rich in jazzy double bass samples, crunchy snares and woozy electric piano chords. The jazz Spastiks up the tempo on their flipside version, delivering a revision that's closer in tone to Slum Village's original while offering all manner of subtle differences and dancefloor-focused touches.

This is the fourth "45" pressing in an ongoing series that also includes similarly must-have golden-era hip-hop gems as "Bucktown" and "Sound Bwoy Bureill". "Wontime" was first released in 1995 and sees the NYC duo spit typical thoughtful, on-point rhymes over a beat crafted from little more than the James Brown "Funky President" drum break, some deep and drowsy chords and occasional snatches of Spoonie G's early hip-hop classic "Spoonie Rap". That deep, head-nodding beat can be heard in full on the accompanying flipside instrumental mix.

Review: Smoove returns to his hip-hop roots via a brilliantly simple but wonderfully crafted tribute to Del La Soul's "daisy age" era and cut-and-paste pioneers Double Dee & Steinski. 'De La Smoove' is a simple idea that has been expertly executed. Subtitled 'Lesson 1', it sees Smoove stitch together snatches of tracks sampled by De La Soul (or more specifically, Prince Paul) on the peerless Three Feet High and Rising album, throwing in all manner of well-known vocal snippets previously used by Steinski and others. He flips the script on B-side 'Hall & Soul', sneakily blending elements of De La Soul classic 'Say No Go' with one of the tracks that it sampled, blue-eyed soul favourite 'I Can't Go For That'.

The edit titles say it all; Muro's vocal edit really flexes Mike Serrette's vocals right down to the iconic gutsy 'huh!' chant and the big backing vocal rhythm while his instrumental version lets that groove run loose as the plucked bass walks cut through with charm and the keys spiral out of control in the best way possible. An stone cold classic.

The Far East Quality EP acts as a showcase for the producer's work, gathering together previously seven-inch only tracks and unheard remixes. It's universally excellent, though our highlights include the bustling, string-drenched excellence of 'No Love Lost' featuring Diamond D, the boom-bap brilliance of Large Professor hook-up 'Jewel of the Day', and both versions of 'Laced With Tragedy', Sasaki's collaboration with Tragedy Khadafi.

Review: Stetasonic was a short lived American hip-hop group who managed to put out three strong albums in their short time together. It was a remix of their 'Talking All That Jazz' by Dimitri From Paris that resurrected interest in the group in 1998 and now this 7" continues to shine a light on the often forgotten group. '(Now Ya'll Givin' Up) Love' is a hard hitting beat with a tense atmosphere. The crashing hits and reverberating drums break only for big stabs to light up the groove, all the while the biting rhymes keep on coming. An a cappella is provide don the flip for more adventurous DJs.

Review: Method Man and Havoc have a rich history of collaborating that goes back almost a quarter of a century. They've been at it again recently and have a full length on the way, but before that is this new 7" slice of gold with another long-time affiliate in the Street Life crew. The A side is a pudding, deep cut beat with crashing hits and some of those spooky yet soulful keys that have long defined this style of rap. An instrumental on the flip seals the deal and makes this an essential pick up.
