Review: 45Trio is a Japanese jazz outfit comprised of Junichi Sunayama, Masahiko Kubo and Shingo Hirakawa that has been turning out fresh jams since 2013 including an album and several 45rpms. 'Saudade Vem Correndo' is a new funk and soul-infused jazz sound that arrives especially for Record Store Day 2023 on limited edition 7". The A-side original is a nice louche and late-night lounge groove with magical melodies and catchy samba rhythms. On the flip is a DJ Koco edit that brings a hip-hop vibe that reminds of the late great J Dilla.

Review: For Record Store Day 2025, Bloom Japan presents a lovely 7" from the 45TRIO, who reimagine Minnie Riperton's classic 'Inside My Love.' This reinterpretation delivers a lush, jazz-infused instrumental take that honours the original's unique sensuality while introducing a fresh, soulful groove for modern 'floors. 45TRIO's tasteful blend of live instrumentation and vintage tones helps breathe new life into this timeless gem while the B-side offers a stripped-down version perfect for late-night spins or sample hunters. This is one to pick up and drop during those loved-up moments.

Something Blue (3:20)
Review: Helmed by producer and multi-instrumentalist Keisuke Yamazoe, Alfex Combo are a deep funk and jazz-funk outfit whose occasional releases are rarely less than incendiary. Their latest outing - their first for two years according to our records - is another special, must-check missive. Check first A-side 'Intermezzo', a killer cover of the Webster Lewis composition that adds righteous horn motifs and hard-wired sax solos to a bustling, life-affirming deep funk groove. Over on the flip, vibraphone player Masami Watanabe excels on a Latin-tinged jazz-funk number that's every bit as essential as the party-rocking A-side.

Dazzling (4:13)
Etsom Ne (4:07)
Review: A strikingly unique dance music project from Nagasaki producer, DJ and sound director Keisuke Yamazoe, Aflex Combo has always been an impressive project, straddling several EPs stretching back to 2002 - and all centring, in the artist's own words, on "heavy funk beats and obscure jazz and Latin samples", albeit with the aid of live musicians. The intermingling of live-recorded and sampled material is always an exciting prospect, often to the extent that we can't tell the difference. Indeed, on this latest reissue of the artist's first ever track - the 2002 cut 'Dazzling' and the formerly unheard 'Etsom Ne' - we recall two janky, blissful jazzdance cuts, splayed across two spray-tanned sides. The former track hears bowing basses and trilling pianos whirl around the mix, as if lost in a nostalgic Millennium-bugged miasma; the latter is much more muted, its most striking elements being its boxy drum machine and expert flute line, betraying a well-integrated highlife influence.

Review: Japanese stars Akiko and Yukihiro Fukutomi came together to cover SADE's anthem several years ago but it now makes its way back to fresh wax courtesy of Record Store Day 2024. They infused it with dark, mysterious jazz and contemporary influences and Akiko's enigmatic vocals intertwine flawlessly with the minimalist arrangement. On the B-side, their original 'let GO' offers a spiritual journey through dub-techno realms where the synergy between Akiko's emotive delivery and Fukutomi's masterful production creates a captivating sound. This release epitomises the pair's creative chemistry and innovative approach to blending diverse musical elements into a seamless, immersive new realm.

Expansions (4:07)
Review: Los Angeles' Alex Santos Orchestra previously paid tribute to classic jazz-funk imprint Red Clay Records via a 45 featuring covers of two classic cuts. On this follow-up, they've turned their attention to another similarly lauded label, Flying Dutchman Records, offering their interpretations of two tracks associated with one of the imprint's most-loved artists, Lonnie Liston Smith. On the A-side they handle 'Devika (Goddess)', a David Hubbard composition that they re-frame as an atmospheric, bass guitar-led slab of laidback, head-nodding jazz funk full of warming electric piano, flanged funk guitars and hazy horns. Arguably even better is their party-starting take on Liston-Smith's most celebrated tune, 'Expansions', whose familiar bassline and infectious groove never fails to get dancefloors moving.

Review: A year after making its debut, Dig Find Sample Chop Repeat serves up its third 45rpm. each one is a deep dive into funk from across the ages and each one has come from the Alex Santos Orchestra. The Los Angeles outfit has previously paid tribute to classic jazz-funk imprint Red Clay Records and now tips its collective hat to Rene Costa. This two-tracker has the superb, horn-led 'Scrabble' on the a-side. It's also got plenty of sunny flutes and nice loose drum breaks to get you going on a hot afternoon. 'Ostonato Bass' does what it says on the tin on the flipside.

Nautilus (4:13)
Review: Dig Find Sample Chop Repeat is a new US label that kicks off with a fine first release: a tidy 7" on deep yellow w vinyl that features a pair of gems from the Alex Santos Orchestra. It is the collective's debut release and right from the off sinks you into a deep cut funk groove. The tight drum work and rolling bass licks are topped off with some expressive sax work up top that takes you back to the future. On the flip is 'Nautilus', a fresh take on the stone-cold Bob James classic of the same name. The sax stabs up top, the mellifluous keys, the knotted bass all sound super fresh.

Nautilus (4:13)
Review: As the label artwork makes clear, this two-tracker from the Alex Santos Orchestra was made in tribute to Creed Taylor's legendary CTI Records imprint, which during the 1970s released some of the finest jazz, jazz-funk and fusion records ever made. On side A the studio collective gives their interpretation of Freddie Hubbard's 1970 epic 'Red Clay', with the track's most famous musical elements - jaunty sax riffs and mazy electric piano motifs - rising above a funkier, warmer and tighter interpretation of the track's low-end groove. Turn to the flip for their version of Bob James' favourite 'Nautilus', a harder edged cover that combines a faithfully spacey take on the original's electric piano melody with sweatier beats and heavier horns.

Theme From The Godfather (4:59)
Mr Clean (4:52)
Review: The Alex Santos Orchestra is a self-described "orchestra" orchestrated for the express purpose of sanctifying one Alex Santos' lifelong love for jazz and Latin music. Following the much loved 'Alex Santos Y Su Orquesta', 2021's next step in Latinizing said quasi-conceptual ensemble, we've now landed in the project's live ambit. 'The Alex Santos Orchestra On Tour' captures just two live highlights from a much more recent outing (given the mystification surrounding the project, this may or may not have happened). Whatever the case, these recordings span both potentialities, retaining something of a highly-strung Hammond organ come upfront-drumkit drama on the B-side, 'Mr Clean', and an equally stirring version of the main theme from 'The Godfather' on the A.

Sun Goddess (feat Myka 9) (4:40)
Sun Goddess (instrumental) (4:40)
Review: The opening notes of Sun Goddess set the tone for what feels like the perfect soundtrack to a summer afternoon. Track one, 'Sun Goddess (Instrumental)', introduces a playful yet sophisticated guitar riff, effortlessly blending elements of funk and soul. It's the kind of groove that immediately hooks you, a little funky, a little laid-back, making it impossible not to nod along. Things get even more vibrant with track two, 'Sun Goddess (feat Mykah 9)'. Here, the energy is dialled up, offering a soulful twist as Mykah 9's vocals glide smoothly over the beat. The track oozes warmth, combining funky rhythms with a band-like cohesiveness that makes you feel like you're right in the middle of a live performance. It's an immersive experience, with the vocals adding richness and depth to an already bright sound. Both tracks embrace that quintessential summer vibe, blending funk, soul and a touch of band music to create something undeniably upbeat and positive. Mykah 9's contributions, particularly on 'Sun Goddess', add an extra layer of groove, making it a standout. There's an ease to these tracks, an effortless cool that makes them feel timeless, and together, they deliver a feelgood, sun-soaked energy that's hard to resist.

'Koliko' is a potent blend of late 60s African rhythms and upfront hip-hop swagger, with K.O.G's vocals adding a raw energy and shamanistic intensity. His lyrics, delivered in both English and his native tongue, explore themes of identity and cultural appropriation, adding a layer of social commentary to the infectious groove, while on the flip, 'God Walked Down' takes a different approach, its soulful melodies and uplifting harmonies showcasing The Allergies' versatility and their ability to craft music that moves both the body and the soul.

Review: DJ Kawasaki fires up his tools and gets to work on a couple of tasty new edits here. The first is a slow disco mix of The Ananda Project's 'Cascades Of Colour' which is lush, low riding and built on loopy drums with silky synths that are finished with some sprinkles of cosmic melody up top. Sublime. Blaze's 'We Are One' then gets a special Fusion Funk Re-Groove mix which has more astral synth work ringing out from a tight and funk arrangement with lush bass lines and nice organic drums.

On the first record, we're treated to 'The Phoenix', a sure-fire funk gem with a super-warm sound - beat is as cool as it gets, with a laid-back and funky attitude sitting beneath a joyous intermingling of sitar, flute, brass and guitar, all performed at expert levels. 'The Kraken', meanwhile, channels a killer groove, strutting at 85 bpm and incorporating a huge brass section which pumps loud, while flute solos and funky Wah-guitar chops take things up a notch.

Review: Several new 7" cuts by our good friends over at Bou Ga Louw have landed in our grasp, the Argentinian label pushing brand new South American funk and soul heaters. Big Jim Hangers' 'Jungle Fever' is a high-octane instrumental ballad clearly dedicated to the dirtiest of acts out there, sex. Moans, groans, organs and drums complete the recipe, and this is an attitude mirrored on the B-side with The Moon People's 'Hippy Skippy Moon Strut'. This is a riotous mix of Afrobeat, funk, and jazz, and a mise-en-scene for free love.

Easebound (4:15)
Review: The latest missive on Agogo Records' nu-jazz-focused offshoot, Oonops Drops, is a debut from Hanover-based jazz collective Bird Moves. There's much to admire across the two tracks, which combine memorable grooves with some stellar musicianship and a wealth of addictive melodic hooks. The pick for club plays is A-side 'Kakra Kakra', a subtly Afro-influenced nu-jazz workout rich in rubbery bass, loose-limbed drums, hazy horns and energy-packed electric piano solos. They simmer things down on the B-side, where 'Eastbound' joins the dots between the languid, sun-down jazz-funk of Roy Ayers' most laidback moments and the head-nodding shuffle of instrumental hip-hop.

Bakteria (DaM-FunK Re-Freak) (4:07)
Review: The Bloto quartet recently marked their return with 'Szlam' and 'Scieki,' their first singles in over two years, released on a limited 7" vinyl via Astigmatic Records. These tracks sold out instantly, leaving fans eager for more. The band now continues their musical assault with another 7" release, featuring a remix by modern funk maestro DaM-FunK from Pasadena, California. This release serves as a prelude to their upcoming LP Grzybnia, set for an autumn 2024 release. Bloto's latest single, 'Bakteria,' draws heavily from classic acid house, offering a sinister and primitive sound that's reminiscent of the harsh resilience of bacteria. Recorded during an improvisation session at Studio Pasterka, the band has abandoned acoustic instruments in favour of synthesisers and drums, creating a raw, infectious track. DaM-FunK's remix, 'Bakteria Re-Freak,' transforms the original's dark atmosphere into a vibrant G-Funk track, filled with sunny synths and a drum machine beat. It evokes a biopharmaceutical bacterium leisurely moving through the streets of Los Angeles, blending warmth with a hint of danger. This release not only boasts Bloto's innovative spirit but also highlights DaM-FunK's ability to reimagine and elevate the original material.

Review: Polish group Bloto are emblematic of the adventurous spirit which drives Astigmatic forwards as a label. There's a strong, instrument-oriented jazz backbone to the music, but it equally functions as daring, inventive club music. Drop the needle on 'Szlam', the A-side of this new 7" from the Wroclaw-based outfit and you'd think you were hearing some DMZ-informed soundsystem pressure. That's as much about the looping flute refrain as the breakstep roll of the drums and one note bass drops, but there's still the scintillating energy of a live band powering the sonics. B-side workout 'Scieki' is a moody strutter with a dash of acidic snarl in its stomping bassline and some eerie keys on top, coming on like horror jazz for dimly lit dancefloors.

Review: If you've not found yourself enthralled by Bluey, the Australian animated kids series about the anthropomorphic six-year-old Blue Heeler puppy, Bluey, her family, curiosity, energy and imagination, then where have you been for the last seven years? Praised for its razor sharp depiction of modern family life in the Western world, it deftly straddles the line between children's TV and adult comedy, hitting both nails squarely on the head. In Rug Isand, Bluey and Bingo discover that a pack of felt tips can be anything - like a snake, or a campfire, or a banana. A perfect example of the creative minds of youth and heir ability to believe in things that grown ups might struggle with, the fact that Dad needs to engage his inner child and suspend disbelief before the episode ends speaks volumes. In musical terms, think fantastical, dreamy and typically witty instrumentation and spoken word, on record.

Review: Earlier in the year, Robert 'Dubwise' Browne followed up his superb, soft-focus reggae-soul cover of 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' with 'Love Has Found Its Way', a fine hook-up with vocalist Maya Hatch that effortlessly joined the dots between samba, lovers rock and sultry downtempo soul. On this "45" he delivers two instrumental revisions of the cut, both of which make superb use of the glistening, fluid jazz guitar solos that only made a brief appearance on the original release. The A-side 'Guitar Instrumental Version' sounds like a future Balearic classic, with his Peter Green-esque solos tumbling down across a shuffling samba rhythm. The flipside 'Dub Guitar' version explores similar sonic territory, amplifying the bass a little while making good use of reverb and delay effects. In a word: gorgeous.

Review: Casquiat - a mysterious production moniker, and clear play on words of the name of a famous New York neo-expressionist artist, punned with either a casket or casque (we're not sure which) - lays down an equally mysterious but also supremely effective edit of the infamous Boyz II Men tune, 'If I Ever Fall In Love Again', re-baptizing it 'Lady Friend' and lending two alternate takes on the rerub (whether 'Bad Self' or 'Lady Storm' are artists or mix names, we also can't tell). Whereas the original track's bittersweet barbershop tones exist purely as an acapella - unusually, in their case, it was an original acapella, not recorded for a produced pop song - Casquiat lays down two, boxy contemporary breaks / hip-hop mashups here, one operative at 90bpm and the other more at 70bpm, and both bringing unusual dubby flavours to an otherwise pure R&B hit.

Chronixx - "Black Is Beautiful" (feat Sampa The Great - remix) (3:34)
Raiza Biza - "Trouble" (feat Oddisee & Zenyth) (4:38)
Review: Sampa The Great is one of the most exciting artist to have broken through in recent years. She's put out two stellar albums, appeared on Jools Holland and how gets called upon for a guest spot on this split 12" on Low Key Source. She appears on the A-side, where muses on the power of blackness on 'Black Is Beautiful' while Chronixx layers up nice broken beats, wood block hits and earthy melodies. Flip it over and Raiza Biza's 'Trouble' is a pained hymn about poverty, struggles and racial tension married to a mid-tempo hip-hop beat. Both tunes are powerful, thought provoking works.

Midnight Magic (DJ Kawasaki 45 edit instrumental) (5:00)
Review: Cro-Magnon's 2010 album 4U has plenty of stunning pieces on it, but of course a collaboration between Japan's eminent jazz funk outfit and grandmaster Roy Ayers was going to be a particularly special moment. DJ Kawasaki has taken the track for a ride and pressed the results onto 7", keeping the vibe intact but eking the track out with blissful results. For those who just want the groove, there's the instrumental on the flip so you can trip out on Ayer's stunning vibraphone playing.
