A Feeling
End Of An Era
Review: Cult electronica artist James Bernard resurfaces on A Strangely Isolated Place with an album that was recorded live at a modular synthesis event in California last year. Bernard performed the five tracks showcased here on a custom rig that apparently included a "Moog Mother 32, custom built filters and various Eurorack modular sequencers, modules and effects". It's actually far more picturesque and beautiful than many exercises in modular electronica, with Bernard offering up tracks that are variously surprisingly cinematic (the poignant and undeniably beautiful "Atwater"), deep and hypnotic ("Hands"), breezy (the cyclical, sun-bright melodies of "Shifting Registers" and breathtakingly loved-up (superb closing cut "End of an Era").

Cold - "Strobe Light Network" (14:52)
James Bernard - "Lapis Lazuli" (6:35)
Review: More split action from STROOM, a label that has delivered some killer reissues of late. Heading up this double-feature is Icelandic producer Isar Logi Arnarsson AKA Cold, who offers us another chance to savour his 1995 Berlin Love Parade anthem "Strobe Light Network" - a 15-minute deep techno epic that boasts a lengthy ambient introduction, hushed and hypnotic grooves, undulating electronic motifs, ghostly chords and glacial, rush-inducing lead lines. Over on the flip, James Bernard takes over. "Lapis Lazuli" first surfaced on his 1997 album "Symphony For A Biomechanical Breakdown" and 22 years on it has lost none of its ghostly, otherworldly charms. A chunk of ultra-deep ambient rich in creepy melodies and psychedelic acid lines, it makes a near perfect B-side to Arnarsson's peerless classic.

Review: 'Fragments + Distancing' cultivates a profound sense of meditative stasis with the use of a Moog Mother 32, custom built filters, and various Eurorack modular sequencers, modules, and effects. James continues his proven and unique efforts in creating ethereal tones on this latest collection of songs. Fragments was created by using a method of composition James has been perfecting, where he takes small pieces of unreleased music that he has written stretching over the last 10 years, and runs them through different modes and methods of granular stretching and FFT processing. In some cases, the original audio source was no longer than 20-30 seconds long. PITP is honored to share this collection of music.

Review: Ambient Etudes For Bass Guitar & Pedalboard is a new album from James Bernard that collates a number of his ambient sketches and improvisations that the artist has made in the last 12 months. The music was made in three different locations and with three different bass guitars, and each time in a live setting, in one take, all captured using the sound-on-sound looping method with a single instrument and a pedalboard. The whole thing is coated in lo-fi fuzz and real-world dust and has a circular nature that means you're always going somewhere but never find out where. It's a perfectly soothing tonic for calming busy minds.

Review: James Bernard has a long and winding history in electronic music production. His story is intertwined with that of seminal UK techno and IDM label Rising High, where he released much of his early 90s work under his own name and as Influx. He's released intermittently ever since, cropping up on various labels and in 2019 linking up with A Strangely Isolated Place. His strain of synapse tickling ambient, electronica and techno sits well on the label - so much so he's now been drafted in for a two volume archive dig which may just introduce a whole new crowd to the mighty fine talents of a true techno believer. Unreleased Works: Volume 1 flies under the banner of Acid Dreams, but don't be fooled - this is a varied affair that uses the 303 sparingly in favour of a handsome assortment of plush synth voices bent to all manner of sonic duties.

Review: California's James Bernard is a much-loved regular on this label as well as being a veteran of the wider ambient scene who has been hard at it for more than three decades. His latest outing on Past Inside The Present with Anthene (aka Brad Deschamps of Toronto) is Soft Octaves, an album that finds them crafting a series of sounds using electric six-string bass. It has a huge range from the deepest depths to the wispiest of highs and each of the tracks here was recorded in one single take. The results are spellbinding indeed and the range of the bass's sonic ability is astonishing as it sounds at times like a cello, at others woodwind and is always intriguing.

Review: Past Inside the Present looks back to a classic ambient work here from James Bernard. His 1994 ambient masterpiece, Atmospherics, has been newly remastered and paired with a fresh track-by-track reinterpretation by bvdub, a friend and collaborator, for this new reissue. A lot has changed in terms of music and technology (and much more, to be honest) since the original version was made and these new versions were crafted by the timeless musicianship and textural richness still shine through. Amongst those who know, Atmospherics achieved cult status during the rise of ambient music and was created using only a keyboard, sequencer, 12-bit sampler, drum machine, and bass guitar. It was all crafted in real time with no edits and bvdub's tasteful reinterpretations honour the original while exploring new dimensions with a melancholic touch.

Review: Anyone who's cast even the most casual eye over their ever expanding catalogue will have realised that one thing Past Inside The Present do best is bring artists together for unexpected and inspired collaborations. Departing in Descent is the first collaboration between James Bernard and Bvdub but their creative conversation effectively started as far back as 1994 when the latter bought Bernard's Atmospherics album in 1994 when it was "mistakenly stocked" in his local house music store. He says it was and remains his favourite ambient album, so when the pair found themselves crossing paths for one night in LA years later, a collaboration was the only logical conclusion. The results are more organic and friendly on the ear than some ambient offerings, with real instrumentation meshed with walls of woozy synths and delays, but no less fantastical and ambitious for it.

Their collaborative album Flint showcases them all their peak with an immersive blend of their own sounds making for a rich soundscape full of subtle depth and warmth. Beginning with 'Conifer,' the record evokes autumn's crisp air with understated drones and field recordings while the title track layers electronics, bass and guitar into a lush, Fripp & Eno-inspired sound. Together with other widescreen standouts like 'Fir' and 'Thistle' they create a beautifully cohesive and reflective ambient trip.

Review: zake, best known for his work on the prolific Past Inside The Present label that he co-founded, lines up with esteemed soundtrack wizard James Bernard and Marc Ertel, whose work centres on the healing, restorative powers of music. The album for Florina Cassettes boasts five tracks that veer on the grander end of the ambient scale - big, airy, blustery mini-symphonies that blow out the cobwebs, from opening tune 'Protector Of The Night' to closer 'Who Hath Listened'. If there is a moment of respite, it's the midway point, 'Sustained Beath', way more static and calm than the tracks it intersects. It's still filled with drama and emotion, as everything here does.

A vast array of instruments were used including a Fender Telecaster, Meris Mercury 7, Eurorack modular synthesizer, Stingray bass guitar and literally tens more tools and toys and the resulting eight tunes of absorbing ambient are all presented here. It is another mystic and mystifying release from this label that reaches sublime new emotional highs.

Review: What more could you ask for than three highly respected masters of ambient sound coming together to create a piece de resistance of aural brilliance? PITP and ZDR does it again; this time combining an incredible 'trio de force' consisting of zake, Markus Guentner, and James Bernard. Introducing 'Pyramiden'; a declaration of ambient excellence that will no doubt be held with the highest regards for generations to come. These eight arrangements take the listener on a journey to the most remote places, finding comfort in the beauty of stillness, awe-inspiring landscapes, and illuminated nights of wonder. The tracklist may suggest a cold, lonely affair with titles such as, 'Polar Night', 'Seafrost', and 'Arctic Choir' but it is quite the contrary. Even in the coldest of times and places, warmth has its place and purpose. Warmth in this case could quite possibly be hope. An incredible array of textures and layers permeate throughout Pyramiden with impeccable beauty and pure resonance.
