Review: On limited yellow vinyl comes the latest LP from the elusive ambient moniker known as Abul Mogard - impossibly distant, impossibly close - this time made in collaboration with equal and match, Rafael Anton Irisarri. Having made friends serendipitously at the sold-out opening of the SoundSet Series at Madrid's Condeduque cultural center in 2023, at which they performed together for the first time, the duo's encore that evening compelled them to get their heads down and commit to a collaborative studio session. What followed was an intense, modular-synthetic jam that, in its final studio-polished incarnation, unfurls and ripples like dark pond water. Both tracks, most notably 'Waking Up Dizzy on a Bastion', slow-burns into the heights of glory and tearful sentiment, as if capturing the feeling of time slowing down when confronted with death in the heat of fortressed battle.

Review: Ambient legends Abul Mogard and Rafael Anton Irisarri team up for new album Impossibly Distant, Impossibly Close. Unfolding naturally after being booked to play at the same show in Madrid in 2023, the two ambient artists' dazzlingly warm, slow-progressing approaches to ambience fuse neatly together here. Just two long pieces, 'Piece Of Forever' and 'Waking Up Dizzy On A Bastion', titularly grasp at the theme of eternity, determinism, historical peaks and troughs: the supporting atmosphere is equally as impressively arresting, seeming to urge the listener to 'give over' and move with the flow of time, less than the flow of will. Such a paradigm shift can indeed serve to make distance and closeness seem irrelevant.

Review: On limited edition green vinyl comes the deluxe edition of Abul Mogard and Rafael Anton Irisarri's latest, two-suite full-length collaborative record, Impossibly Distant, Impossibly Close, released through Black Knoll Editions. This gut-wrencher of a record unfolded after a chance kinship following a show at which both ambient legends appeared. Despite this seemingly irreverent origin story, 'Piece Of Forever' and 'Waking Up Dizzy On A Bastion' are anything but throwaway, each entrancing the listener with up to 20 minutes per side of awestruck sonic bokeh and tidal dronework, producing an overall tactile and warm, fully audiophilic experience.

The album also sees the duo return to Parlophone, the label which released their iconic and massively successful material spanning between 1985 and 2012.

Review: Deep techno lovers Hypnus have been showcasing the work of Paul Roeleveld aka Rambadu for some time. Only back in 2021 was he a newcomer with a sound that belied that status and now a few years on he has kept impressing. 'Yatra' is slow and deep, menacing and full of paranoia as snaking synths slithering along a desolate landscape. 'Nadi' has a dubby undercurrent and percolating grooves that gurgle and spit like molten lava, and 'Reis' is utterly stripped back to deep space pulses and a subtle, barely-there rhythm that is full of suspense. 'Setu' shuts down with more unsettling and otherworldly deepness and alien sound designs.

Review: Angatu is a new label out of Brazil that uses the occasion of its first release to shine a light on plenty of next gen talents going from the South American hotbed. Word is that Claus Voigtmann and tINI have already been rocking joints of this EP so you may well be familiar with them. Minority Retort opens up with a slinky and futuristic pair of tech house tunes that are sure to get the seasoned duo plenty of attention over here in Europe soon. Review: Gidge has been at the heart of the Atomnation sound for a while and now the duo reinforces that status with a new EP that again explores the bratty of bittersweet musical landscapes. 'Gausta' kicks off with some plaintive, heartbreaking chords and heavy rhythms and organic touches, while 'Grit' has acoustic strings and moody chords. 'The Fells' picks up the mood a little with a subtle sense of hope in the drums and sensitivity in the strings. 'Bleak' has another brilliantly forlorn vibe with indie and electronica meeting somewhere in the middle and last of all is the painterly synth mastery of 'Whiteout'.

Review: Wiremu popped up back in 2018 on Pathway Traxx, and now the wriggly minimal upstart is back with another crafty workout for those who like their stripped-down club gear a bit on the wonky side. 'The Subtle Hustle' has a springy, playful funkiness which calls to mind the mid-00s era of labels like Trimsound and Minibar, where there was space for a little jazziness in the miniscule samples darting around the drums. It's a quality which follows through the whole of this standout EP, which is teeming with detail and soul in equal measure.

Review: Keinemuzik return for a fresh split 12", co-starring production peers Alan Dixon and Arabic Piano on the long-burner that is 'Thandaza'. A brooding progressive cut that glides through sun-upped vocal chants and shuffling percussive elements, the track is a veritable exciter, with Piano's vocals coming off especially charming. Dixon's signature piano line abounds in the breakdown, giving images of cocktail-glassed refractions of beachside fires backclothed by a deep blue ocean.

Review: Outside In return to the fray with a fresh EP from rising star Strange Haze, whose recent contributions to the minimal techno have earned him much credo of late. 'Temple Of Truth' is no less out-of-this-world than EPs prior, with each of its tracks seeming to evoke a mystical acid outerzone, with the likes of 'Mystery Traxxxx', 'Outer Body Experience' and 'Nihilistic Sedation' drawing on ideas of spacetime, space navigation and opiate hallucinations.

Review: Global techno temptress recorded the original version of 'Tarde' in her bedroom back in 2020 and then sat on it until she felt the time was right to release it. The time came last year and predictably it became an underground hit. It's an intimate tune about love of the kind "that is so strong it could almost break you". Now it has been remixed by some serious talents and pressed up to this pink 12". There is hyper-speed trance-techno and broken beat on the A-side, then two types of bouncy hard techno on the flip, all with seductive Spanish vocals.

Review: Here's a proper genre fusion for the dancehall heads. On his latest reissue, Robert 'Dubwise' Browne testifies to over 20 years of hitmaking with a standalone 7" edition of his remix of Ramsey Lewis' 'Sun Goddess', first released on Vortex in 2023. Whereas Lewis' original 70s funk version is a sweet and sunkissed headboard-licker with a simple backbeat, Browne prefers to cant things dubwise, swapping the aforementioned out for a phat dotted stomp. Clock the new pairing with Browne's version of Grover Washington's jazz-funk classic 'Mister Magic'.

Review: Oblivium's third vinyl outing finds Carlo Di Roma laying out some meticulously designed minimal sounds for those who like deep cosmic trips. For us, the fluttering tin foil snares and pulsing synths aired with paddy drums on the A1 really takes some beating - its both deft and subtly craft but sure to lock you in for as it grocers along with a great sense of cool. Elsewhere 'Oblivium' is a dubby and acid laced bubbler, then 'Big Fuking Surprise' gets two remixes - the first from Chktle is a nice deep house rework with splashy hi hats and cuddly drums and the second from Franco Cinelli is more driven.

Review: The Don is the man born Maryvn Don. He has been seeing up cultured house and tech sounds since the early 00s and some of them have been getting welcome reissues of late. We have another here in the form of 'Remember' which is seriously high quality and designed purely for dance floors. Up first is 'Remember' which is an intense mix of bleeping synths and sci-fi designs over hurried drums and bass. 'What If?' then rides a classic 90s tech house groove with snappy snares and wispy little pads macing for an intriguing late night vibe that will get floors locked right in.

Review: The more nerdy out there will know that Keepsakes has featured on Perc Parc before having contributed to the Forever 2 various artists' release back in 2020, but now he makes his full debut with this fierce solo EP. 'Scene Analysis' is just that, a heavyweight takedown of dance music bullshit with no-frills drums and rattling percussion all topped off with a dark monologue. Label head Perc remixes and makes things even more caustic and ear-splitting, then 'Industry Anthem' does manic things with the word 'money' over taught, twanging synths and slamming drums. 'Prey For Hype' is the final potent offering, again with brash sounds and rusty textures, hard drums and no-nonsense de-humanised vocals.

Luca Lozano is the one who takes the reins for the big 12" and serves up some electric sounds for peak-time deployment. 'Number One Difficult Man' is noisy, intense, acid-laced tech house and 'FRe-Mix; is full of edgy breakbeat energy and bouncing synth sequences with knick-snapping hits. 'Save Me From The Rave' is our old school action with retro stabs and pummelling drums so get your gun finger at the ready. Review: Mother Tongue pushes on with more sounds from the constantly evolving creative mind of Julion De'Angelo. His vibe is soulful, modern yet proudly Black, and always has a big focus on the dumps. This debut for the label carries on that tradition with opener 'NOWnormal' built on a rugged rhythm and laden with percussion and off-grid chords. 'NotAnotherCafe!!' (with Deon Jamar - Turmeric Latte mix) has more sunny synths and a percolating low end reminiscent of Theo Parrish and 'MyzticBounz' rides roughshod on broken beats and busted synths that bring a raw sense of soul.

Review: The Netherlands has always excelled at electro, particularly on the West Coast. As such it has a wealth of labels that are always go-to for proper electro heads no matter the day's prevailing trends. Frustrated Funk is one of them. 214 lands on it here but doesn't hang around for long, instead taking off to the cosmos on some enthralling rhythms and edgy synth patterns that flash and dash about the mix. Review: Zodiak Commune has become a tried and true outpost for edgy electro in recent times, and they've been incubating the talent of Dima Gastroler across a run of releases in 2024. The run of form continues as Gastroler locks in with 'Zero Tolerance', an icy blast of machine funk with strafing synths in the classic electro style. There's similar movement sweeping across 'REConnection', albeit with more pronounced acidity in the lead lines.
