Notturno Italiano Reworks
Notturno Italiano Reworks (12" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: MT 19006. Rel: 23 Sep 20
Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. Notturno Italiano (Daniel Maunick & Alex Malheiros vocal) (5:55)
  2. Notturno Italiano (Daniel Maunick & Alex Malheiros instrumental) (5:55)
  3. Notturno Italiano (Ron Trent dub remix) (7:28)
Review: Mario Acquaviva's 1983 jam 'Notturno Italiano' is a hugely sought after Italian boogie gem. Mother Tongue have dug it out the archives and enlisted some key names to offer up reworks and reconstructions, with Azymuth's Alex Malheiros and Daniel Maunick going first. They offer vocal and instrumental versions with life-affirming jazz Rhodes and cool, seductive rhythm sections that take you into the cosmos. Eternal deep house hero Ron Trent then does his escapist and spiritual thing on a lush and star-gazing dub that transcends genre. All three of these are irresistible.

Three/Four/Five (12" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: BLACKTONGUE 02. Rel: 28 May 20
Deep House
  1. Three (7:59)
  2. Four (4:48)
  3. Five (5:29)
Review: Late last year Italian artist and self-proclaimed "black belt ninja" Black Tongue debuted with a two-tracker that genuinely set our pulses racing. Here the man or woman of mystery returns with an even more expansive EP, which we can happily report is full to bursting with tasty treats. A-side workout "Three" offers a fine balance between jazz-funk-fired musicality, quietly impressive musicianship and infectious grooves that make the most of some deliciously loose-limbed drumming. The producer's love of classic house is explored on "Four", where the action revolves around snappy, Chicago house style machine drums, warehouse-ready stabs and an undulating keyboard bassline, while "Five" is a colourful take on jazz-funk/electrofunk fusion that reminded us of the combined output of Dego and Kaidi Tatham.

One/Two (12" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: BLACKTONGUE 01. Rel: 11 Dec 19
Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. One (8:26)
  2. Two (4:19)
Review: Not to be confused with the Hull-based doom metal band of the same name, Black Tongue is a debutant artist with links to Italian distributor, label and record store Mother Tongue. We're not sure who's behind the project, though both "One" and "Two" are superb. The former sits on side A and features jaunty, jazz-funk style synth stabs and spacey electronic solos rising above a retro-futurist boogie groove. It's all very warm, loose and languid and operates in similar sonic territory to some of Dego and Kaidi Tatham's productions. "Two" sees the mysterious artist turn his, her or their attention to broken beat, layering intergalactic synthesizer lines and drum machine handclaps atop a sub-heavy bassline and taught, bruk-up beats.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul

  2. Birds Of Prey (3:53)
  3. Strolling Down Degnan (3:57)
  4. Motherland (5:09)
  5. Natadera Spirit Walk (3:11)
  6. Volta Ao Mundo (3:56)
  7. Dreamweavers (3:44)
  8. In Answer To Your Question (3:15)
  9. Kodama Shade (2:56)
Review: Mark de Clive-Lowe is a musical maverick who now comes back to his roots with a new record that explores electro-acoustic sounds steeped in rich piano playing. Two Italians in bass player Andrea Lombardini and drummer Tommaso Cappellato also get in on the action having been constant companions on his live tours for many years. Broken beats, global grooves, the meditative sombreness of Sakamoto and jazzy soulful looseness of Ahmad Jamal all inform this record (which was made on a road trip from Italy to Switzerland) which is as good for dark winter nights as it is warm summer days.

Dreamweavers (transparent blue vinyl 7" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: MT 7002. Rel: 24 Nov 20
Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. Masina (2:23)
  2. Mizugaki (3:49)
Review: Mark de Clive-Lowe somewhat goes back to his roots on this fantastic new electro-acoustic record, Dreamweavers. It features two singles from the album of the same name on a special transparent 7". All his veritable skills as a pianist and composer are on show as he links with bass player Andrea Lombardini and drummer Tommaso Cappellato. There are meditative melodies a la Sakamoto, soulful and playful chords and broken beat rhythms in the drums that all make this an expansive and life pair of standout singles from the master.

Endless
Endless (7" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: MT 7001. Rel: 05 Aug 20
Deep House
  1. Endless (4:03)
  2. Purple (4:04)
Review: Patrick Gibin has signed some terrific records to his Mother Tongue label, so it's no surprise to discover that the Italian imprint's first "45" is a bona fide stunner. It sees sometime Gustosa producer Gary Superfly join forces with Other Lands (AKA Gavin Sunderland, previously best known for his work as Fudge Fingaz) to offer up the kind of sumptuously warm, languid, loose, toasty and organic fare that can't quite decide whether it wants to be jazz-funk, modern boogie or especially hazy deep house. A-side "Endless" is particularly potent, with waves of kaleidoscopic synth sounds and twinkling Rhodes solos relaxing over a chunky bassline and head-nodding drums, though toastier and hazier flipside "Purple" is almost as good.

Cat: MT 7003. Rel: 24 Nov 20
Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. Sexy Suzy On A Sunday (Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah remix) (4:51)
  2. Sexy Suzy On A Sunday (The Forest Is Calling remix by Carlos Nino & Friends with Nate Mercereau & Jamael Dean) (4:31)
Review: California Soul queen Tiombe Lockhart returns to Mother Tongue with a special follow up to her The Aquarius Years album. Both tracks get special remix treatment, first up it is jazz man Christian Scoot who serves up a super pained, late night and spiritual remix where the beats are heavy hearted and the sax beautifully tragic. Intergalactic ace Carlos Nino then works with Nate Mercereau & Jamael Dean on the flip to make the tune into a steamy and sensuous neo-soul lullaby. The vocal harmonies are enough to send shivers down your spine.

  1. Another Day
  2. Binary Funk (extended mix)
  3. The Billy Love Experience (Let Love live)
Review: With this Ep for Mother Tongue Gerald Mitchell really shows what Soul is all about. The first Los Hermanos Ep on vinyl in over a decade brings it back to Church and then some! From the Gospel tones of the dancefloor smasher 'Another Day', to the electric techno-jazz of 'Binary Funk Infusion' featuring Bob Rogue [think of Herbie's Dedication meeting Axis] and finally closing [and melting] with 'Let Love Live' featuring the incredible voice of Billy Love...it was definitely worth the wait.
