Review: The Fall's Grotesque (After The Gramme) is a pivotal yet divisive album in their post-punk catalogue. Released in 1980 as their third LP, it marked a transition to Rough Trade with slightly improved production but retained the signature chaotic elements of the band. The album's rough, repetitive riffs, two-chord jams and Mark E Smith's rambling vocals shape its anarchic sound, which veers between absurdist social commentary and disorienting narratives. For longtime fans, the abrasive, unpolished approach solidifies Grotesque as one of The Fall's best. Smith's lyricsiranging from cryptic absurdities to cynical diatribesidemand patience and interpretation, while the band's anti-musicianship serves as a critique of conventional rock. Tracks like 'New Face in Hell' and 'C'n'C Mithering' show the raw, ragged rockabilly edge of The Fall, punctuated by moments of manic energy and surreal storytelling. Grotesque impresses listeners who embrace its unique blend of repetition and chaotic invention. Its scathing portrayal of class and industry through an almost deranged Northern lens is The Fall at their most quintessentially unsettlingiand endlessly fascinating.

Review: The Fall's latest record takes shape in the form of Grotesque (After The Gramme) Live!, a compilation of 1980s live Fall tidbits not yet celebrated in the light of day. Curated by one small section of the ever increasingly mountainous pile of former members of the band, Grotesque was put together under the aegis of Popstock Records, an outfit run entirely by this ragtag, somewhat happily jilted group. Following up the first record of its kind, Slates Live!, Grotesque Live! culls and curates hundreds of hours of live bootlegged, somewhat ramshackle live recordings of the Fall taken from a two-year period beginning in the 1980s. With liner notes by Henry Rollins, this is yet one more record to capture Smith and co's captious, caustic sonic societal menacings onstage.

Review: In 1993, The Infotainment Scan, The Fall's 15th studio album, delivers an unpredictable mix of post-punk, glam rock and electronic experimentation. Mark E Smith's distinctive vocals and cryptic lyrics were paired with tracks like 'Ladybird (Green Grass)' featuring Steve Hanley's rumbling bass and the infectious glam stomp of 'Glam-Racket'. A standout cover of Sister Sledge's 'Lost in Music' provided an unexpected yet dazzling disco twist. The album also featured the chaotic energy of 'A Past Gone Mad' and the menacing dirge of 'The League of Bald-Headed Men'. Though initially intimidating, the album rewards perseverance. Tracks like 'Why Are People Grudgeful?' stand out as quirky pop gems in an otherwise abrasive, genre-blurring collection. It's an essential entry in The Fall's vast, ever-evolving discography, showing off Smith's unique ability to fuse disparate influences into a cohesive, challenging listen. Reaching number nine on the UK charts, The Infotainment Scan continues to fascinate and confound today. This set of CD's combine the original album, the BBC sessions, 2 live concerts where they performed many of this albums songs plus a CD of bonus tracks. This is a fantastic look into the Fall's overall music around the release of Infotainment Scan.

Review: Alternative icons The Fall were of the most out-there acts of their generation, if not any generation. Now, all new on Bella Union is Stales Live on 10" and CD. Conceived by former Slates-era members of The Fall, it offers live versions of the 1981 mini-LP's six tracks that capture the raw essence of their legendary live shows plus plenty more. With input from band members throughout sourcing, mastering, and design, this release is a long-awaited treat for Fall enthusiasts. Stewart Lee, a dedicated Fall fan, contributes sleeve notes and each song is meticulously curated to showcase its evolution onstage, making Slates Live a must-have for fans yearning for an authentic Fall experience.

Review: By the time Shift-Work came along, The Fall had put out 13 studio albums and been going for 15 years. Apparently ready to switch things up, Mark E Smith sacked guitarist Martin Bramah and keyboardist Marcia Schofield after the Australian leg of the tour for Extricate, cutting the lineup to four, for the first time in the band's history. Then he set to work finishing a record that had been started while on the road. Few would fail to pick up on the difference between here and before. While there's still plenty of those mesmerising, experimental, punk-not-punk goth moments, Shift-Work also embraces more pop sensibilities and seems to take more time to pay respect to rock & roll, or a gritty interpretation of it. Meanwhile, tracks like 'Edinburgh Man' and 'A Lot of Wind' feel introspective than ever.

Review: Originally surfacing in February 1990, the 12th studio album from The Fall came at a time when both the band themselves and Manchester music in general were at a commercial highpoint. Some saw the decision to collaborate with turntablist pioneers Coldcut as a nod to baggy indie-dance culture, but Mark E Smith had already joined forces with the London duo on two tracks on their debut album What's That Noise? In any case, this album's main single 'Telephone Thing' is regarded by many as an all time standout Fall tune, pairing a highly infectious breakbeat/scratch backdrop with some super sharp lyrics about the rise of surveillance culture. The gap left by Brix Smith, who had recently split up with the band's singer, was filled by former Fall member and Blue Orchids man Martin Bramah, who lends proceedings a rockabilly edge that runs through many of the tracks, especially the riotous 'Chicago, Now!'. But the Adrian Sherwood-produced 'The Littlest Rebel' is more like new wave synth pop turned inside out, ensuring there's plenty of variety and experimentation going on here.

Review: The Fall's Mark E. Smith was having a rather torrid time even by his own standards when the band made The Marshall Suite in 1999. He was fresh back from a US tour on which he had been fighting with fellow band members on stage and was later arrested after carrying on the shenanigans back at the hotel. The album itself builds on the techno sounds The Fall had explored on the preceding album Levitate but also with something of a return to the rockabilly-influenced sound from earlier Fall line-ups. Cuts like 'The Crying Marshal' are as strange and complex as they come with thumping jungle drums powering it along.

Review: Glittering is not really a word that comes to mind when you think of legendary experimental outfit The Fall but their career was certainly just that. This special live album certainly shows that and comes with some special liner notes as well as being pressed up to nice heavyweight 180g vinyl. It includes tracks from across their whole discography and all served up with that realness, rawness and sense of spite and visceral energy that defined the band with tracks like 'Lie Dream Of A Casino Soul' and 'Why Are People Grudgeful?' sounding as good as always.

Review: We're pretty sure our catalogue is full of albums by The Fall which we describe in gushing terms. More fool us for using all the words before this re-issue of the band's seminal live record arrived, because it really is that good. Laid down at shows in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Houston, and Memphis, to put things in no uncertain terms it bangs in the best possible way, offering the kind of unashamed gutter punk we find ourselves sorely lacking in most rock 'n' roll today.

Of course, back in 1982, when this first landed, critics were torn as to whether they wanted to demand more from Mark E. Smith, et al. And back then perhaps that was a valid point. Speaking in today's terms, though, A Part of America Therein 1981 represents a moment in time when authenticity was far more commonplace, and the impact of hearing that is nothing short of profound.

Review: Demon Records have embarked on a project to put out four new vinyl reissues from Mark E. Smith and his cult band The Fall. The Infotainment Scan album landed back in 1993 on Permanent Records and went on to be the outfit's highest charting work, entering the UK charts at a frankly unbelievable #9. That said, it is the most accessible of all their records with its cover of Sister Sledge's 'Lost in Music' as well as tunes like 'Paranoia Man in Cheap Sh*t Room' and 'Glam Racket'. This is the first time it has been on wax in almost three decades.
