Tracks Volume 1
Tracks Volume 1 (limited blood red transparent vinyl 12" 再プレス)
Cat: CITI 017. Rel: 27 Nov 17
  1. Amato - "Physique" (5:13)
  2. Tzusing - "King Of System" (5:06)
  3. An-I - "Mutter" (6:00)
  4. Broken English Club - "Glass" (5:28)
Review: There's a delightfully celebratory feel about this debut volume of Cititrax Tracks, a new 12" series from Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax. As beautifully presented as we've come to expect, Tracks Volume 1 boasts a quartet of dancefloor-ready smashers from a blend of new faces and label stalwarts. Amato (aka The Hacker) kicks things off with the glistening EBM funk of "Physique" - all restless synth refrains and pounding bottom end - before LIES affiliate Tsuzing go all dark, psychedelic and twisted on the thrillingly intense, acid-flecked "King of System". An-I go all DAF (with a touch of Front 242) on the fuzzy and dystopian stomper "Mutter", before Cititrax regulars Broken English Club delivers a storming chunk of industrial-tinged analogue funk ("Glass"). Bravo!

Cat: GSC45 001. Rel: 27 Nov 17
  1. Summer Time (edit) (3:36)
  2. Punk Funk (edit) (4:01)
Review: BlackCash & Theo dust off two pairs of gloves... First their crate digging gloves to unearth Thrust, the one-off album Ohio duo McNeal & Niles recorded in 1979, then they dust off their editing gloves for two immaculate extensions. If you enjoy anything on Claremont (especially Paqua) then you'll be all over these cosmic instrumentals - notably the soft harmonies on "Summer Time" and the endless, star-gazing guitar twangs of "Punk Funk. You may recognise a few samples here, too... Madlib and Motor City Drum Ensemble are two of many who've enjoyed the fine hooks of Mc Neal & Niles.

  3. My Dear (3:08)
  4. Esa Montana Se Movera (Joaquin Joe Claussell Teenage Music remix) (10:55)
Review: New York City's Most Excellent are back with some of the first ever music put to wax by one the label owner's closest friend, Cesar Toribio. They say it best themselves when they tell us that the music "is honest, vulnerable, and exposes parts of his personality that even those who are fortunate to know him." The Brooklynite by way of Tampa, Florida, is an alumni of Berklee's School of Music and recorded "My Dear" in his college dorm room in 2011. "Esa MontaNa se Movera" was great, but that reinterpretation by none other than Joaquin "Joe" Claussell (Sacred Rhythm: a hero of Cesar's) on the flip, has exactly the kind of life affirming vibes on the dancefloor you could expect at his Body & Soul NYC residency. Second track "Respire" was the real joy on here, reminiscent of classic Ron Trent in all its emotive and sensual glory. Mixed by Phil Moffa.

  1. Luvless - "Vary In Colour"
  2. Long Island Sound - "I Chose You Because"
  3. Tommy Vicari Jnr - "Pacific Stri"
  4. Mara Lakour - "Akoa" (Tribal edit)
Review: For their Sophomore V/A, Brooklyn's Super Tuff Records dig into the batter's box and unveil a roster packed with Varsity-tier heat. At the top of the lineup, we have the Tsuba-famed slugger Luvless, delivering some powerful piano house with his anthemic Vary in Colour. Rounding out the A2 are the fresh-faced, Irish lads Long Island Sound with the soul-sampling I Chose You Because. Batting clean-up, Tommy Vicari Jnr puts one far into the outfield with Pacific Stri"ia heartbreaking tribal house track that's as funky as Mateo & Matos and as wonky as Animal Collective. For the final run, Parisian duo Mara Lakour tap into a pure, blissful piece of deep house with Akoa (Tribal Edit).

Funny Girl (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: DYNAM 7003. Rel: 27 Nov 17
  1. Funny Girl (short version) (3:28)
  2. Dreams (3:26)
Review: Although featured on James Mason's lauded - and recently reissued - 1977 album Rhythm of Life, "Funny Girl" is nowhere near as celebrated as some of the other cuts on that set ("Sweet Power Your Embrace", in particular). Happily, Dynamite Cuts has decided to put it centre stage for the first time, sticking it out on a desirable 7" single. Featuring the super-sweet vocals of Clarice Taylor, the song perfectly encapsulates Mason's loose and musically rich fusion of soul and jazz-funk. Also impressive is flipside "Dreams", a slightly looser and jazzier cut - again, with Taylor on vocal duties - that originally closed out the Rhythm Of Life LP.

Review: The second project from NYC label HOMAGE comes from little known French producer extraordinaire, Chevals - who until this point, has self-released only a handful of songs. His first full length EP contains four absolute stompers spanning disco, house, latin house, and afro house. The Labour of Love EP, if played, will result in an uncontrollable urge to party as hard as humanly possible. Enjoy.

Cat: C 002. Rel: 27 Nov 17
  1. Head Rejection
  2. Witzelsutch
  3. Creepy PC
  4. Head Rejection (Boot & Tax remix)
Review: Calypso's next EP comes from one of the label's owners, Thomass Jackson. Delivering 3 tracks full of psycodelic guitars, analog synths, soothing percussions and with Italians "Boot & Tax" on remix duties, this Ep covers a broad range of sounds and styles. The journey begins with the westernesque "Head Rejection" sumerging us in a hallucinatory desert full of weird snakes and scorpions. Up next is "Witzelsutch"(a leftfield secret weapon for some djs already) with sublow basses and sharp synths doing all the work. "Creepy PC" is a slow chugger with a trance-inducing vibe aimed to make you close your eyes and let go. Last but not least, Italian super duo "Boot & Tax" delivers a somewhat more straight foward version of "Head Rejection" where a sonic synth makes you forget you are in the desert.

The Nassau Sessions
The Nassau Sessions (40 gram vinyl 7")
Cat: LWKMUS 006. Rel: 27 Nov 17
  1. Jet Ski
  2. Lavender In The Night
  3. Sweet Genius
  4. Shit To Buy
Review: The Nassau Sessions were recorded in Nassau Bahamas in March of 2013 using zero analog equipment. This debut 7" features four sedated, rum-fueled dubs by Double Pelican Man.

The sounds chosen are familiar to the Dub Reggae lexicon. Deep sub bass, guitar chords, synth bleeps and clacking percussion. All drenched in echo and reverb, each ingredient added with careful consideration to the mix. The rhythms tumble and sway confidently. Grooves are proudly extended, while the occasional overdub effect gives each track a paradoxically haunting undertone.

After inhaling these tracks, your perception of time may be altered. Seconds slowing to minutes, minutes drifting towards the open sea and out into the abyss. Suitable for a euphoric afternoon smoke or a back room deal. The Nassau Sessions will be one of the most distinguished dub EP's you will hear this year.

  1. Way Ahead
  2. Croatian Households
  3. Labud Loop
  4. K Stands For..
Review: Strahinja Arbutina is fast becoming one of those artists you need to keep your eye on. With his first vinyl release on New York's industrial label Bank last year, he has no issue with making your ears bleed. Here he dons 4 tracks for Vivod and they're all brutal. First off is Way Ahead, straight up 4/4 industrial techno. A2 is the aptly named Croatian Households, more of a broken piece but still haunting in its rhythmic neg dynamics. B1 is Labud Loop, probably the most accessible track of the 4 as it's nearer to straight up techno, fans of Levon Vincent will like. Closing the ep is K stands For... with a slow burning break beat and vocals screaming incomprehensibly, awesome track, awesome ep. This is the hardest one for Vivod so far surely!

  3. Ritorno (Rodion remix)
  4. Andata (Timothy Heretic Clerkin remix)
Review: "For WS021 we head to Italy where we find a duo by the name of Concret aka Italo-Mexican musician Diego Angelico Escobar and producer Q-pha. Together, they submit a couple of ethereal, stripped-back and driving techno tracks that compliment each other so well they appear to be brother and sister from the same session.

On remix duty we've got another Italian, Rodion, who ads his signature sound to Ritorno and flips it into a laid-back dark groover.
Last but not least is UK's Heretic, aka Timothy Clerkin, who remixes Andata into a classy acid burner fit for a massive warehouse party or dark, sweaty basement.

Review: The London-based trio known as MUX have been building quite a reputation for themselves at the moment; all for the right reasons. They manage to blend such sophisticated genres and sounds with our most primal aptitudes creating a gritty complexion that can't be wiped away in a hurry.

Frenetic, unique, exploratory and imaginative; that just begins to sum up this group. Throw in some stoner rock elements, some electronica and a little bit of flair, only now do you have this incredibly vibrant, diverse backbone to this ever satisfying tribal demeanour.

  3. Floog - "Down Town" (7:39)
  4. Iuly B - "Returns" (7:37)
Review: The latest 12" on RORA offshoot Bleu Ciel is an all-star affair, with a quartet of artists contributing to the imprint's first compilation-style EP for two years. Romanian combo Lisiere Collectif steps up first with "J-1103-14", a typically atmospheric affair full of wonky late night motifs, shuffling percussion and creepy, early morning vocal snippets. Faster delivers a rock solid, beefed-up tech-house roller ("Return of the Gain"), before Floog reaches for the organs on the bumpy tech-house/deep house hybrid "Down Town". To round things off, Iuly B lays down the EP's deepest and dreamiest moment: the becalmed, head-in-the-clouds warmth of deep-tech shuffler "Returns".

Review: Diferit, AKA prodicer Grigoriou Cosmin, has never been the most prolific producer. In fact, this is only his third 12" in four years. It is, though, rather good. A-side "Dreamscapes" is as fluid, colourful and hazy as the title suggests, with gaseous chords and lilting synthesizer melodies slowly rising above a bubbling groove that sits somewhere between deep house and Romanian minimal techno. The producer's low-slung, late night tech-house influences come to the fore on "Timepiece", whose most exciting features are a trippy analogue bassline and punchy machine percussion, while "Dust" is a pleasingly rich and groovy chunk of early morning deep house for those who like their records locked-in and hypnotic.
