Review: Konbini Classics shine a light on the tightest of city pop unknowns, where many an ingenious album and single in the style has thus far flown cynically under the European market's radar. First up on their latest 7" is Anri, with 'Gone With Sadness', a sizzling, pinching funk cut from the Kanagawa-born, LA-based singer's seventh album COOOL. Then contemporaneous 80s superstar Yurie Kokobu backs up the buzz with a much boxier and heavier tune, 'Dancing Tonight', a B-side from her well-mannered debut album, Relief 72 Hours.

Review: Both of these funk gems are taken from a cult compilation Trans Groove Express, which explored the sounds of Express Records and was assembled by MURO. Fourth Wave now serve them up on a superb 7", starting with Maki Asakawa. 'Hohi Hitotsu' is a delightfully gentle and subtle dub with funky guitars adding movement while the sultry vocal soars. Yasuhiro Abe's 'Night Fish' is a brighter and more retro 80s soul and boogie sound with glowing chords and snappy hits. The Japanese language vocal is emotive enough to mean plenty without understanding the meaning of the words.

Review: Japanese trio Cat Boys are busy right now. In February they return with a nice and deep beatdown tune in the form of 'Fly' that came as a couple of remixes by DJ Snuc and now comes this new limited 7" on Cony. It opens with the Brit funk sounds and jazzy grooves of the lush and musical 'Parachuter' which will have you on your toes, then 'Let's Stay Together' channels the Al Green classic but utterly reworks it into an upbeat jam with hard rim shots, raw funk sounds and warming organ tones that all light up the most vibey groove.

Deep House
Review: Rhythm Section International is one of the scene's most influential and therefore respected labels. Its Shouts 2021 compilation has already got plenty of plaudits and for good reason. It is a diverse selection from sure to be star names such as Liluzu who opens with the slow and snaking house of 'Nano.' Elsewhere Nidia brings a richly melodic perspective to some loose broken beats on 'Celebration' and Klein Sage's 'The Sayers' is a superbly vibes, stripped back bit of jazzy basement house with finger clicks to die for and a great monologue that pokes fun at plenty.

Review: From the creative, crate-digging minds of the Supafrico imprint, Supalatino digs deep into rich annals of South American disco and funk to present five previously rare-as-hen's-teeth floor fillers. Highlights include Ray Barretto's extended cover of Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise", Marcia Maria's seductive, off-beat vocal delivery on "Meu Amigo Branco" and the soul jazz fusion of "Sunny", a track that's gave the house scene a very well-known brass sample. Heavenly.

Review: Described by Legere Recordings as a 'widescreen instrumental pop anthem soaked in summer sun', 'She's In LA' sees experienced Welsh musician (and former Colorama front man) Carwyn Ellis daydream about moving to the City of Angels with a little help from Shawn Lee and Andy Platts ALA Young Gun Silver Fox. Authentically Californian in vibe and execution, with Ellis's weary lead vocals recalling the likes of Boz Scaggs and Donald Fagen above a sun-soaked, synth-sporting West Coast groove. It's utterly gorgeous and undeniably life-affirming, as is the vocal-free instrumental take showcased on side B. A future Balearic favourite, no doubt.

Review: If online chatter is to be believed, this tasty 7" from Floating Points' Melodies label is one of the most keenly anticipated disco releases of the year. For starters, the A-side boasts an obscure (but in demand) solo production from Manhattan Transfer keyboardist Yaron Gershovsky. "Disco Baby" is a prime chunk of jaunty, jazz-funk influenced disco-funk, the keyboardist's own jammed-out riffs and solos taking pride of place in the mix alongside punchy horns and a lolloping groove. Arguably even better, though, is Floating Points and Red Greg's flipside re-edit, which plays around with the original version's all-too-short drum break before letting the synths, keys and horns really sparkle.

Review: An airy, artfully curated city pop come funk release centring on the works of Junko Yagami and Yurie Kokobu, two of the defining singers and producers of Japan's golden era. Yagami's 'Bay City' kicks off Volume 2; the lead track is in turn a standout track from her 1984 album Communication, and serves a roomy slice of romantic skylit gateau, against which champagne bottles clink and heads turn. Kokubu's B-side is complementarily back-roomed by comparison, fitting better the lovelorn drama of the afterparty. Released four years earlier than the A, in 1980, the track is a moodier cut for savvier diggers.
