Nimbes
Nimbes (Yair Elazar Glotman Ember mix)
Nimbes (Eric Holm 10/50 mix)
Review: Nimbes is the soundtrack to a 15-minute audio visual piece of the same name by filmmaker Joanie Lemercier and Emptyset's James Ginzburg. The music itself is a collaboration between Ginzburg and Yair Elazar Glotman, a Berlin-based sound artist who recently released an album on the Italian ambient label Glacial Movements. Subtle Emptyset snarls lurk in the background of the title-track, with rumbling double bass, cellos, plucked strings and dramatic drums taking up the foreground in a cinematic piece of sound design. Glotman provides his own version of "Nimbes" that's devoid of much bass, instead overcast atmospheres and blustery orchestral movements dominate. Eric Holm, who earlier this year released his debut album on Subtext, delivers a clanking, industrial remix, somehow adding even more tension to a record best described as foreboding.

Serena Butler - "Fertile Fancy" (3:50)
Estrato Aurora - "Icnita" (7:21)
Vera Logdanini - "Vplanet" (6:53)
Review: Following fine EPs from Healing Force Project and Mesak in 2017 and 2018, On Board Music flips the script on its first and only vinyl release of 2019. "Point A" is the Berlin-based label's first mini-compilation and it's well worth a listen. Lanoche kicks things off via a spot of ultra-deep dub techno/ambient techno fusion (the wonderful "Love Fall", before Yugen doffs a cap towards the hypnotic, synthesizer-driven sound of late 1970s Krautrock on the suitably cosmic "Phantom". Serena Butler's "Fertile Fancy" is an immersive drift through enveloping ambient, Estrato Aurora's "Icnita" a bubbling deep techno epic and Vera Logdanini's "Vplanet" an acid-flecked trip into locked-in electronic hypnotism. In other words, this is a very fine collection of cuts.

Motor City (Quiltland remix) (3:44)
Innercity Haze (1991 remix) (6:53)
Review: Martin Herterich aka Stockholm's Sand Circles "Motor City" gets the remix treatment. Originally appeared on Los Angelino imprint Not Not Fun back in 2012. These fine revisions are by fellow purveyors of Scandinavian underground electronics. Northern Electronics main man Abdulla Rashim's take on the title track is even more haunting and emotive than the original while Swedish trio Yen Towers take on "Endless Nights" is rather savage in its restraint and quite chilling, truth be told. Finally Astro:Dynamics affiliated Quiltland's remix of "Motor City" retains the old school charm of the original in a great modern synth-pop interpretation.

Fine-Tuning Problems (5:44)
Getting Closer To An Unknown Goal (7:53)
Review: Icelandic techno veteran Yagya enjoys a release on X/OZ that celebrates both new and old material. The tempo is noticeably ramped up on "One Weak Light" but never at the expense of that dark and mysterious Icelandic hue. "Existence Is Weird" is no slouch either, but Yagya shapes out his atmospheres with such a refined touch that you barely notice how quick the tracks are running. "A Very Long Daydream" is a gorgeous ambient track dug out of the archives, while "Getting Closer To An Unknown Goal" sees the re-release of a track Yagya released as Rhythm Of Snow back in 1999.

Rigning Sjo (original)
Rigning Sjo (Mark E remix)
Rigning Sjo (Dennis Kane E-Train mix)
Review: With his approach to music hugely informed by the landscape around him, Yagya is a shining example of the thriving electronic music culture that emanates out of Iceland. With previous form on albums for Force Inc and Subwax, he now sidles up to Adult Contemporary for a sublime offering in the shape of "Rigning Sjo", which comes on as a masterful demonstration of floatation tank ambience and submerged techno tropes with an ethereal, orchestral beauty. Mark E follows up with a rubbery bassline and salvo of storm samples on his remix, taking a more mechanical approach than the artist is more commonly known for. Dennis Kane then finishes things off with a more taut disco-sizzling version that keeps the dreamy atmosphere but piles in the hooks.

The Other Side Of Despair (6:51)
Distorted Dualism (6:41)
Standing Still In A River (6:41)
Two Moments (6:53)
Review: With releases on Delsin, Subwax and A Strangely Isolated Place it's plain to see that Icelandic dub techno don Yagya is facing the right direction. So it's fitting his most essential release of the lot lands on A Strangely Isolated Place, his own label. If you're going to deliver the apex of your recent work, best do it on the platform you have complete control over. Or at least that's what they (someone?) should say.

It's a deep package, with four tracks threatening to suck you further into the waves of synth and sub bass. Some would consider the tracks on here to be tools, the kind of tunes that ease transitions, and they'd be right. Providing they understood these are the best types of tools. Heavy but light, sharp but trance-infused, if we move past the labels this is basically what subtle dance music should sound like. So file under 'similar to Substance & Vainqueur'.

Electro Union (4:20)
Commercial Noisy Day (4:23)
Track 4 (3:32)
Review: .It might be the most aptly titled EP you buy this month. Or even this year. Seoul-based Yetsuby has managed to invoke the spirit of a bubble bath with Water Flash, four tracks that feel like they might float away on a breeze, or bounce and bumble their way along the ground, representing a particularly difficult to describe type of new age electronica. Opening on the title track, it's hard not to fall in love with its combination of subtle, staccato drums, wind harmonies and glittering background effects - halfway between classic Detroit techno melody and Far Eastern ambient. 'Electro Union' ups the dancefloor ante, offering a slow mo, broken, warbling workout that feels as fresh as it does retro. 'Commercial Noisy Day' pares things back, focusing mainly on drums and accents of percussion, while 'Track 4' goes for a pure deep listening experience. Press play and you'll know what we mean.

Review: Two years ago, Transmigration decided to dig into much-missed Japanese producer Susumu Yokota's ambient techno work as Ebi, and more specifically an album he released in 1994 on influential German imprint Space Teddy. Here they offer up a belated sequel featuring three tracks from that sought-after set, and two from its' 1996 sequel. "Zen", a languid and unearthly affair featuring trippy, psychedelic acid lines rising above a chugging beat, is especially alluring, though the same could also be said of the intoxicatingly deep, quiet and exotic "Chuu". Elsewhere, "Sei" boasts enveloping, melancholic chords and more twisted acid riffs, while "Kaze" and "Tsuki" successfully throw additional IDM influences into the pot.

Review: Yu Su's eclectic, organic sound is one that has been perfected over every consecutive release, and reaches its yetmost peak with 'I Want An Earth'. As if to make a defiant cry for a habitable planet, this one contains four tracks inspired by the artist's time spent in the deserts of Ojai, California, and the coastal areas of British Columbia, presenting a deeply pad-driven, warm and modular sound to match. A dazzling work of odd-timed cosmickery and varied sonics.

Review: In a collaboration for the ages, we hear German kosmische musician Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Cluster, Harmonia) team up with Japanese flutist Yuko Matsuzaki and Berlin Philharmonic analog musician sound engineer Onnen Bock for a nacreous improv blast. Spanning soft, pearly electronica and neoclassical, Moon Garden comprises five works, incorporating techniques and fragments of songs already released. A mythical aura unfurls through synth koto and organic harmonics; 'In The Forest Of Syrinx' establishes a singing bowled, new age aesthetic, segueing into the purely vocal threnody 'Sapphire Jellyfish'. Bridging electronic washes, piano and female vocals, this is a borderless soundscape of exciting proportions.

Review: The Body Is a Message of the Universe is 35 years old in 2022 and so gets an anniversary reissue courtesy of Subliminal Sounds. It still sounds future now with its cathartic Japanese synths washing over and through you like an aural aesthetic. It was the debut album from Shiho Kabuki who has somehow been overlooked ever since. The new age motifs and lounge-like frequencies are deeply immersive as well as achingly beautiful. You're always afloat amongst the shimmer synths and serene pads whether the mood is heavy, hopeful or heady.

The changing seasons of his native Incline have often been his chief inspiration and that's the case again here on his most dreamy work to date. The record is divided into the distinct moods of Spring ('Vor') and Autumn ('Haust') and is brilliantly escapist and evocative.

Review: Dub techno magician Yagya (real name Aoalsteinn Guomundsson) has been releasing music on other people's labels for almost two decades. Now he's taken the logical step and launched one of his own: Small Plastic Animals. The debut release is an album from the man himself, his ninth in total. Many of the tracks on "Old Dreams & Melodies" are underpinned by metronomic, dub-fired techno and house grooves, but it's the various musical elements layered atop - string quartets, cheery synthesizer melodies, hushed spoken word vocals, fluid piano motifs, delay-laden clarinet lines and so on - that really catches the ear. It's a formula that results not only in a string of fine tracks, but also a strong album that's undoubtedly the Icelandic producer's most accessible and expansive set to date.

Review: Yagya (Adalsteinn Gudmundsson) is one of the foremost names on the intersection of ambient house, dub techno, and dream pop, having achieved international renown for their many icy, mournful and gaseous long-players and EPs for many imprints over the years. 'Faded Photographs' is Yagya's latest, and his ninth album to date, bringing together an interesting dozen of tracks overlaid with vocals from fellow artists Benoit Pioulard and Bandreas, and saxophonist oskar Gudjonsson. While stooped in pop songwriting, every track here locks in a triplet groove on top of 4x4 beat structures, producing a skippy, carefree and lackadaisical effect.

Review: 'Faded Photographs' is the latest album project by Icelandic producer Yagya. Featuring his usual blend of ambient and dub techno, this one is also among his first to incorporate elements of deep house, pop and classical music, with friends Oskar Guojonsson, Benoit Pioulard and Bandreas cropping up on vocal and saxophone features. Despite the fact that there are over eleven tracks on this opus, every track on the album makes use of 3/4, rather than the bog-standard quantised 4/4, time. The overall effect is a skippier, dreamier, more laid-back queering of techno, contrasting to the straight and unswung vibe of its square forebear.

Travelling through the mind-bending realms of deep, dubby techno and introspective ambient, this generous eight-track journey explores expansive terrains. The first track sees soaring atmospheres intersecting with patient, strolling rhythms and flashes of reverberating sound design. Another standout track, 'Number 4', reaches out to a distant horizon, waves of glittering synths meet the shoreline while rippling flute samples delicately skim the surface of glassy water. This is a soothing balm of a release, drifting delectably between flowing movement and calm serenity - an incredibly multi-faceted EP, suiting fans of ambient and the deeper reaches of techno alike.

Review: Given the hushed tones with which ambient and dub techno fans speak about Yagya's 2006 album Will I Dream During The Process, Japan's Subwax label is taking a risk messing with such a classic. To their credit, they've enlisted a sympathetic producer - namely Detroit-based DeepChord man Rod Modell - to provide the obligatory "redesigns". Happily, Modell does a fine job balancing the shuffling rhythms, yearning melodies and dreamy textures of Yagya's original material with his own dub-powered grooves, stargazing electronics and Motor City-influenced melancholy. Ultimately, it's a blend of styles that makes for wonderful results, from the becalmed melodies and drifting chords of "DeepChord Redesigns 4", to the shimmering ambience of "DeepChord Redessigns 6" and rolling dancefloor shuffle of "DeepChord Redesigns 7".

RECOMMENDED
This is the first album Ai Yamamoto has released for US imprint Past Inside The Present, and it almost feels like an artist finally coming home - albeit a home they never lived in before. A perfect meeting of minds a long time in the making, fittingly the work included here has also taken a while to materialise, with the arrangements presented written and recorded over a two year period, between 2018 and 2020.

Japan-born, Melbourne, Australia-bred, Yamamoto's extensive experience working with pianos, strings, wind instruments and keen attention to detail in terms of textures and timbre is clear to hear within moments of hitting play. Having been making music for the best part of two decades, she's long-since honed her craft and fine-tuned those skills, ensuring Love Me Tender is a hushed ambient beauty you won't easily forget.

Mondo continues to work with Konami on its ongoing Silent Hill soundtrack series. This time they offer up the first-ever vinyl pressing of the final game in the series from the original developers, Team Silent, namely the soundtrack to 2004's Silent Hill 4: The Room. Akira Yamaoka is the composer behind this one while artists Nephemolancer and Ashley Swidowski feature in a mix of anthemic and dark rock cuts, more atmospheric downbeats and even some curious trip-hop moments full of tension and suspense. Another great addition to the racks for fans new and old.

Review: The Silent Hill videogames are among the most venerated in the entire horror genre, and we've no doubt that the soundtracking talents of Akira Yamaoka have a lot to do with this acclaim. Ever since his score for the original game, Yamaoka's soundtracks for the franchise have demonstrated a unique mastery of the abstractly eerie as well as the classically cinematic. Now forming part of a wide reissues bundle of all of Yamaoka's Silent Hill scores, this reissue represses his score for Silent Hill 3, which (being a relic of the early noughties) upped the ante into atmospheric trip-hop, and heard several more ethereal vocal contributions from singer and voice artist Mary Elizabeth McGlynn.

Review: Mondo continues to work with Konami on its ongoing Silent Hill soundtrack series.

Review: It's 2025 and we're writing about the music from a video game. It's 2025, and this isn't the first time we've written about music from a video game. And it won't be the last. The difference is, in 2025 writing about the music from a video game is barely even worth commenting on, with symphony halls hosting live concerts celebrating the best sounds from playable worlds and everything from sweeping orchestral overtures used in epic adventure franchises to chip music accepted into relative degrees of the mainstream. Enter Akira Yamaoka, whose contributions to the pantheons of tunes have helped lay the foundations for taking video game music seriously in its own right. Breaking the mould not just for computer games but specifically survival horror tones with his first Silent Hill score, as you would expect, by the third instalment of the scariest series to ever grace a console this is a finely tuned process, in the best possible way. Eerie but cool, poppy but experimental, ambient, electronic, lofi-rocky and utterly absorbing as a standalone listen.

Review: Akira Yamaoka, Marcin Przybylowicz and PT Adamczyk's original soundtrack for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners hears original OST numbers written for the award-winning anime series set within the futuristic dystopian world of Cyberpunk 2077, which originally spawned as the offshoot of the video game of the same name. Fitting for the music's breathy progressive house and electro oeuvre, which is interspersed with more traditional expressionist orchestral climaxes and builds, the Edgerunners series centres on a crack team of cyberpunk renegades, as they traverse the beastly underbelly of Night City, located in a futuristic vision of LA, navigating a world replete with corruption, gang violence, and cybernetic addiction. A note for fans: this vinyl edition includes unused, never-before-heard tracks composed by Yamaoka for Edgerunners, but which does not appear in the series.

Review: The music from Michael Ondaatje's Booker Prize and 12-Oscar-winning film encompasses the original score by Gabriel Yared with the haunting vocals of Marta Sebestyen and Fred Astaire. It is a story which has successfully made its mark on every medium that counts a - a classic to beat all classics. It's a cathartic journey that explores identity, fidelity, and fate amid the chaos of World War II. Shot against the majestic backdrop of the Northern Sahara and Italy, Yared's score blends Hungarian folk tunes, baroque themes, and romantic orchestration and mirrors the emotion of the film's characters without relying on visuals. Period tracks by Fred Astaire, Ella Fitzgerald and Benny Goodman complement the emotional depth of the story.

Her recent album My Star, My Planet Earth won "Best Electronic Album of 2023" at the Korean Music Awards and now the NTS host follows up with a debut on Seb Wilblood's All My Thoughts label, which is a heartfelt mini album that explores deep emotions with real sonic alchemy. The six tracks range from the mesmerising opener 'Who Swallowed the Chimes at the Random Place' to the soothing 'The Sublime Embrace - Losing Our Way Is Not Wrong'. Both blend intricate rhythms with lush vocals and elegant brass to create celestial, immersive sound worlds.

Review: In Li Yield's Chinese homeland, the title of this album translates back to English as 'childhood' or 'dishevelled hair'. Both are fitting. The London-based multi-instrumentalist and composer follows on from 2021's spellbinding OF with a second full-length record, and this time looks to try and immortalise the experience of growing up young, seeing the world through wide open eyes and learning by engaging with it. The technical back story is impressive - Nonage is packed with outtakes of old Chinese TV shows, mechanical toys and instruments that were made by the artist for this project. Yilei's own childhood piano jams, and half-memories, are also interspersed. In the end, it's a beguiling listen, intriguing and curious, and consistently hazy, just like those recollections from when you were only just able to reach the counter top.

Review: Balmat is an A-grade ambient label that welcomes a similarly well-regarded performer in Ylia for this album of soporific sounds. Susana Hernandez aka Ylia impressed back in 2020 with her debut Paralaxe Editions and once again explores a calming spectrum of synth music that is well-detailed with fingerpicked acoustic guitar, flutes, clarinet, soprano sax and piano. It is an album rich in melody and melancholy, a sense of eternal stillness that is well-informed by Japanese culture and often strips back to just the raw acoustics.

Review: Re-issue of highly lauded year 2000 album by Japanese artist Susumu Yokota, also known under aliases Ebi, Stevia and Frankfurt-Tokio Connection. That same year it was named album of the year by The Wire. Yokota passed away in early 2015 aged 54. An amazing body of work spanning a variety of moods and styles from ambient, jazz, trip hop and exotic instrumentation. This re-issue is one of a series of ten landmark albums, reissued on vinyl to celebrate The Leaf Label's 20th year. LP includes original CD album in miniature Leaf 20 design card wallet, Leaf catalogue inner sleeves and spot varnished Leaf 20 logo on front cover.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Surface mark on the back of the record sleeve***

The late, great Susumu Yokota made many terrific records, though few are quite as revered as 2004 set Symbol, which up until last year had only ever been available on CD. It got a limited vinyl pressing in Japan in late 2021 and is now available worldwide thanks to this white vinyl pressing from Lo Recordings. The album itself is simply stunning: a perfectly pitched fusion of neo-classical orchestration, melancholic piano motifs, ambient textures, sampled vocal refrains and beats that variously touch on instrumental hip-hop, IDM and soft-focus Latin grooves. Atmospheric, evocative, melodic and impeccably produced, it remains Yokota's most musically expansive and cinematic release. It's the sort of set that everyone needs in their life, whether or not they're a confirmed admirer of the Japanese artist's other work.

Review: Susumu Yokota's venerated 1994 classic Acid Mt. Fuji is reissued in expanded, deluxe fashion, as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of the label that originally released it. Japan's Musicmine - specifically its electronic subsidiary Sublime - released the album on June 29, 1994, simultaneously with Ken Ishii's Reference To Difference, as their inaugural joint offering. Tantamount to a fusion of ambient acid/rave - then still nascent in Japan - with new age music, Susumo Yokota was likely the best man for the job at the time. With his first album, The Frankfurt-Tokyo Connection, he'd not yet established his electro-pastoralist style, yet it was Acid Mt. Fuji that divined the latter-day emotes of Sakura, a new age so adroitly fused with electronica yet emulable by few. Though the later years of Yokota's life have been couched in a good deal of privacy and mystery, Acid Mt. Fuji certainly betrays a fittingly shrewd and introspective character on the part of the artist, one that served him well. Its long, drawn-out nature soundscapes - tempered by the piquant sounds of modern synths like the TB-303, which animistically, pseudohallucinogenically blend with the animal sounds themselves - recall something like an alpine augur's waking dream.

Review: Following the explosion of Japanese ambient reissues in the past five years or so, certain artists have become household names in a curious combination of favourable streaming conditions and a consistent need for people to slow their lives down via music. Alongside the likes of Midori Takada and Yasuaki Shimizu stands Hiroshi Yoshimura, oddly omnipresent on YouTube sidebars but more importantly universally appealing for his exquisite, wholly natural take on environmental music. 1986 album Surround has been crying out for a reissue for a long time and finally Temporal Drift have done the right thing and brought this stunning record back into reach. Faithfully remastered with the fervent audiophile audience in mind, this is a long overdue celebration of one of Yoshimura's finest releases.

Review: Up until his death in 2003, Hiroshi Yoshimura spent decades offering up immaculate albums that blurred the boundaries between ambient, new age and minimalism. For those not versed in the Japanese ambient pioneer's vast catalogue, 1986's "Green" - which is here reissued by Light In The Attic - remains one of his most impressive works. Created using a minimal number of instruments (mostly synthesizers and electric pianos), the set is as quietly jazzy as it is relaxing. Highlights include the meditative, Terry Riley influenced bliss of "Feel", the pulsing organ stabs and blissful electronics of "Sheep", the garden-ready musical hug that is "Green" and the swelling opener "Creek".

It also comes with a full reproduction of the original jacket and liner notes in both Japanese and English which add context to what is a key album from an underrated master of ambient. Yoshimura is rather under-known outside of his homeland despite being such a key figure in the scene there. This is the first time the album has been reissued outside Japan and it has been done so with Hiroshi's widow Yoko Yoshimura. More of his works are to be reissued soon, so this is a great primer.

He came to create his first masterpiece, 1982 debut album Music For Nine Postcards, following a near 10-year spell exploring the early potential of computer music. The album has long been considered a "must-have" for ambient collectors, despite high second-hand prices and very limited stock. Thrillingly, Empire of Signs has decided to reissue it on vinyl for the first time. Entirely performed and produced by Yoshimura, it features a series of impeccable compositions rich in slowly unfurling electric piano motifs, spacey synthesizer chords, delicate organ lines and, on rare occasions, the musician's own voice routed through all manner of outboard effects. Simply stunning.

Review: 34 years after Hiroshi wrote these seven startling compositions for a Tokyo fashion show, they are finally given the vinyl status they've always deserved. Previously only available on cassette, Pier & Loft has become a cult body of work for all ambient fans. Driven, melodic and laced with a sense of energy that the genre often misses. Sci-fi chamber music, if you will, the playful counterpoint between the keys on the brilliantly titled "Wavy-patterned Ice Cream" and the smouldering unwitting proto house dynamics of "The Sea In My Palm" are just two of the many beautiful, timeless highlights.

Review: In the widespread revival of Japanese ambient music, Hiroshi Yoshimura's music has been cast as some of the most cherished and reissued. Albums such as Music For Nine Post Cards and Green have enjoyed high-end editions in recent times, and now comes the turn of 1986 masterpiece Surround. It's been fervently pined for by the new wave of Far East ambient aficionados, and for good reason. This is Yoshimura at his best, delicately placing elegant musical figures atop oceanic pools of synth and leaving ample room for the mind to cast adrift. That might sound like a very generic way of describing an ambient release, but Surround's qualities transcend the formulaic trappings of the genre to become something truly magical.
