Review: Japanese live outfit, A Hundred Birds has a thing for creating classic covers. Over the course of their career, they've recorded countless covers, including organic, string-laden interpretations of techno scene staples such as "Blackwater" (originally recorded by Octave 8) and "Knights of the Jaguar" (The Aztec Mystic). Last year they offered up another warm and wonderous cover, this time of Stevie Wonder classic "All I Do". Here it gets a new lease of life courtesy of scalpel fiend Ryu The Man, who has delivered tightened-up, floor-friendly vocal and instrumental edits of the warm, rich, soulful and undeniably summery cover version. Both are rather good, though it's the vocal version that will win over dancers.

Baltra steps up first, combining Motor City style cymbals patterns, lilting chord progressions and punchy drum machine hits on the fuzzy "Never Let Go (Of Me)", before YancityGurl dives deep into the ocean depths via the rock solid kick drums and woozy pads of "We Leave". Flip for a chunk of tech-tinged, ghetto-inspired wooziness from experienced producer Ray Kandinski and the distorted, analogue-rich positivity of Sonderr's "Method". With its ghostly chords, quirky vocal samples, subtle acid lines and spacey chords, the track offers just the right balance between dancefloor weight and head-in-the-clouds beauty.

Review: Japanese trio Cat Boys are busy right now. In February they return with a nice and deep beatdown tune in the form of 'Fly' that came as a couple of remixes by DJ Snuc and now comes this new limited 7" on Cony. It opens with the Brit funk sounds and jazzy grooves of the lush and musical 'Parachuter' which will have you on your toes, then 'Let's Stay Together' channels the Al Green classic but utterly reworks it into an upbeat jam with hard rim shots, raw funk sounds and warming organ tones that all light up the most vibey groove.

Rallying round in support of World Mental Health Day 2020, Shanti Celeste kicks the record off in style with the rapid fire, deep-diving workout 'Fantasma'. OCB keeps the pressure up with the psychotropic techno of 'RS3', while Michelle works up some delightfully freaky synths on playful jacker 'Aesthetic'. Bobby's 'Free Your Mind' is a 90s-tinged, full fat techno production indebted to Detroit, Peder Mannerfelt keeps things stripped and raw on 'Our Levels' and Yu Su weaves a beautiful tapestry of interweaving rhythms on 'Brittney'. Review: The fourth release on Manchester-focused label Ad Hoc brings together a range of outernational grooves from some fast-rising talents. Cervo is aligned with the Banana Hill parties, and also previously released on Black Acre and Lumberjacks In Hell. His "Hesse Groove" takes a mellow, spaced out approach to dusty machine-powered house, while Taurtollo gets into a bongo-heavy jam for the eclectic warm up session. Chambers' "The Gentleman" is a loose and smooth jazzy number that revolves around a few key samples to create its seductive vibe, and then Yadava finishes the EP off with the free-roaming double bass exploration of "Kadampa 125."

Review: It's ten up for the cultured hose label No Fuss here and they hit the milestone in style with underground Michele Chiavarini and his Jazz Codes project. Their innovative 'Jazz Was Dancing' has a monologue about jazz over jazzy keys and live-sounding jazz drums so in a word, it's jazzy. Saison adds some more bumping drums and swinging grooves to their remix and on the flip, Japan's Yuichi Inoue offers a deep house sound that also explores jazz, but in a more seductive way on 'A Night In The Room.' Sebb Junior's 'As One' is last up and slows things down with a more sensuous late-night sound full of heart.

Review: House Running are back with another of their signature compilation 12"s, calling on a host of talented producers keeping the house dream alive. Paris-based producer Colkin is bringing nothing but good vibes on piano chopping, lately bass-ing burner "Central 13". He also gets a second look in with "Gonna Be", which features none other than Detroit breakthrough star Javonntte on impossibly powerful vocals. On the flip, Meemo is on hand with the spaced out funk of "Untitled" while Yoshiko Okabe's "Tree 4" gets a 90s-style, club-ready re-rub from Yamuraka. If you're looking for high grade deep house music, look no further.

Review: Flumo and ANMA Records link forces for this one, a collaborative project between UK-based Contours and Yadava. The music comes from various jam sessions and melds live percussion and floating keys with lush synth arpeggios. Add in drum machine, synthesizers and field recordings and you have a live and dynamic record. The whole thing flows smoothly and takes in beat driven jams that go deep with more scoring, emotionally charged tracks. Elements of the rich UK jazz scene, house, funk and more besides make this a fantastic exercise in musical warmth and soul.

Review: Earlier this year, Latvian label Micronica Records made its debut on wax after years spent serving up digital-only delights. Here the Riga-based imprint delivers a second limited-edition vinyl sampler. Blurring the boundaries between deep house, minimal house and tech-house, all four cuts are well worth checking. Costin RP sets the tone with 'Kiss This', where sci-fi bleeps, modem noises and spacey synth sounds rise above a chunky, hypnotic tech-house groove, before Yansima delivers a tougher and more thickset tech-house workout in the shape of 'Jisula'. Venda's 'Underwater' is a deep, dubby, head-soothing minimal house box jam, while DIN & CKB's 'Duby' brilliantly blurs the boundaries between dub techno, ultra-deep house, and smooth European tech-house.

Review: The Uducha label showcases its fifth release with a various artist EP housing cuts from a mixed bag of names. Alex Danilov, Brother G and Yuri Shulgin team up for a triple collab resulting in the track "Untitled", a swerving and fruity mix of flutes, chimes, pads and dusty drums. A5 makes use of some Ray Manzarek keys, sampling the Doors "Riders On The Storm", layering some noisy electronics over the top, while Kurvenschreiber keeps things psychedelic with some Krautrock styled synthesis in "Leitweg". Trueman then debuts on Uducha 5 with a whimsical and cool summer sounding "Odyssey Saga".

Review: Demi Riquisimo's 'A Lifetime On The Hips' sublabel returns to make it a hat-trick of releases for 2023 with the impressive 'Body Move' V/A, featuring eclectic club cuts from Dreamrdreamr, SY, Papa Nugs, Elfenberg, Absolute. & Ysanne. Dreamdreamr's emotive 'Zone 4 Booty Call' kicks off the A-side; it's a track that effortlessly fuses elements of deep house, trance, and r&'b, setting the the tone perfectly for an EP not bound by the borders of any genre. The titular 'Body Move' by SY is up next; a no-nonsense house chugger with flourishes of Italian 90s progressive and acid - a perfect modern interpretation of a foundational strand of club music. The A-side wraps up with one of 2023's most exciting prospects Papa Nugs and the vocoder infused, percussive, twisted jam 'Loosey Goosey'. The flip picks up right where the A-side left off with Elfenberg's 'Solarplexus', a cosmic, evolving and psychedelic interpretation of house. After, UK mainstay Absolute offers a 'Devastating Rhythm', a peak time techno floor filler that sounds like a Frankenstein mix of seminal imprints Dance Mania & D'jax-Up-Beats' output - proper gear. Finally, drawing the curtain on the 'Body Move' V/A is Ysanne's 'Tisno Tango'; a slightly more introspective cut, but with more than enough groove to make you dance, a perfect closer.

Review: Croatian duo Eddy Meets Yannah are no strangers to the Compost empire and their return to the Compost Black sub label sees tracks from the duo's recent album "Fiction Jari"remixed by some serious house heads. Rainer Truby teams up with Danilo Plessow aka Motor City Drum Ensemble to transform "This Is Love" into a late night jam replete with excellent vocal effects. The same track is given a sparkling jazzy house gloss by Restless Soul type Bopstar. On the flip "Follow Me" gets a squelching tropical house retouch from Dominican producer Ezel.

Review: FTP001 marks the debut of a freshly minted label, FrieTanzPlatten. There's little other info to impart, so we'll head straight onto the music, which is gleefully eccentric and wonderfully hard to pin down. There are references to classic jungle and hardcore material all over the place - see the Vincent Price-sampling, dubwise movements of Edward Mudwasser's brilliant "Shivers (DJ Normal 4 & 4 Boom Hombre Lobo Mix)", or the rush-inducing rave revivalism of Son Of A Loop's "TnJ Loop" - but also a range of tracks that stick two fingers up at convention. Check, for example, the deep space explorations of Mood Ring's "Where R U Now", which surprisingly features a very weary male vocal, and the wayward acid madness of DJ Groov's "Energy Ensemble".

Review: Remake Musique's original and almost humorous label approach is back again for their ninth vinyl release that sees four well known artists contributing pretty much whatever they feel like behind a veil of disguise! As usual, Remake goes for dancefloor killers, upbeat house and disco tracks that scream of good vibes. "Party Girl" from FLP & DNI featuring YVN is just that with sexy vocal snippets, a hooky bassline and plenty of floor breaking opportunities. Sam Clarence and "I've Got Soul" go for a more techy feel with strong kicks and up tempo beats. Flip over and Charly Deloin's "Joker 1" plucks groggy guitar strings and rapid hats into a comical and sexy female house vox. The highlight of Remake 009 goes to Dora though, with "Who's Pimping Who". A really original cut, it intelligently mixes hip-hop, funk, disco and house music in a most insouciant way.
