Review: Earlier in the year, U.S disco and house legend Danny Krivit took his scalpel to Emilie Nana's super single "I Rise", a warm and woozy fusion of shuffling beats, visions of Shiva chords, blissful electronic melodies and stylish spoken word vocals. Now Compost has turned the track over to another bona fide U.S legend, Wave Music man and former Prelude remixer Francois Kevorkian. He does a superb job, re-casting Nana's original as a constantly building cosmic house epic on his superb, near 12-minute "Journey Vocal" version. His subtle percussive changes and ear for atmosphere come to the fore on the suitably trippy and head-in-the-clouds dancefloor Dub, while the "Bonus Beats" take sees him layering up the drums and effects with incredibly impressive results.
Review: Germany's Nils Penner is a perfect fit for the Compost Black label, his suave approach to tech-minded deep house instilling yet further credibility into this successful label. He's appeared on here before, along with an appearance on the equally awesome Freerange Records, but "The One" feels like his most musical and accomplished work to date, thanks to the vocal appearance of Emilie Nana in what is a smooth, silky house groover for all sorts of DJs to enjoy. There's a heavier, moodier dub of the title track too, while the flip's "Mercury" goes into more progressive territories, and "Blue" driving an almost jazzy, balearic excursion. Another winner from CBL - recommended!
Review: On Paradise, Siren's Darshan Jesrani and Dennis Kane join forces with veteran vocalist Felice Rosser, who was a key member of New York's experimental "downtown" scene throughout the 1980s. Rosser's breathy, howling vocals sit perfectly amongst Jesrani and Kane's low-slung, delay-heavy production, which sits somewhere between the post-punk dub disco of Fist of Facts, the horn-heavy strut of Konk, and the sparse, proto-house sound of Paul Simpson, Winston Jones and Boyd Jarvis. For those after something altogether sleazier, Gavin Russom has provided a dark, throbbing, ten-minute basement workout that reverberates to the sound of industrial textures and muscular percussion.
