Review: Back in 2014, Kenny Dope's Kay-Dee label released a sumptuous 7" box set featuring killer re-edits of the breakbeats and groove tracks that were originally recorded for Charlie Ahearn's pioneering 1983 hip-hop movie Wild Style. Since that box now goes for serious money online, the Masters at Work producer has decided to reissue two of the set's most potent rework. On the A-side you'll find his version of Fab 5 Freddy's "Down By Law", where impressively deep and woozy synths ride a low-slung post-punk bassline and punchy funk break. On the flip, the Dope one serves up a DJ-friendly extension of Grand Wizzard Theodore's "Subway Beat", where woozy Moog lines wrap themselves around a snappy drum machine beat and rubbery slap bassline.

Review: Following last year's inaugural compendium, Supalatino let fly with five more superb Latino disco joints include two massive cover versions. Louie Ramirez adds go faster stripes to People's Choice "Do It Anyway You Want", Willy Chirino takes Barry White up an octave or two without losing any of the sensuality. Elsewhere we get cosmic on the synth heavy "The Barrel" and conclude with the awesome harmonies and crooning horns of Dom Un Romao's "Escravos De Jo" which you may recognise in the extensive work of Joe Claussell. Supa stuff, don't sleep on this one.

Review: Whilst previous Wack bumpers have come from Smov, The Breakbeat Junkie, DJ Rebel, Daytoner, and more, this 14th edition of tightly wrapped straight up party funk from the label is less forthcoming in the credit department. "Big Bird" is suitably named as it comes packing big drums, big hooks and a big build that's hugely reminiscent of Sly and his fam. Flip for "Heartbreaker" where The Allergies throw down a tweeter-tight rhythm and blues vibe. Super sweaty and highly charged with big claps and bigger riffs. Big indeed.

Review: Absolute scorching stuff from one of the most dominant gospel voices in 60s funk. Originally released on Giant and Calla respectively (and licenced, remastered and released with Shirley's total blessing), "Tell The Truth" is a raw bluesy workout with fired up harmonies and brazen horns squeezing every bit of honesty from our souls, "Because I Love You" hits with a little more soul thanks to the big backing vocals and added melodic layers but strip it down to the bare bones and it's nothing but raw, unapologetic funk... Review: "Huxley's Howl" by Bay-area keyboard savant Howard Wales was originally released as a 7in single in the early '70s on his own Costal Records imprint. Luv N'Haight is proud to present the first official reissue of this classic slice of mid-tempo, instrumental funk, loaded with stabbing horns, explosive Hammond organ and heavy drums with a nice dose of psychedelic vibes to round out it out. The B-side "My Blues" chugs along at a slower pace, with a "bluesier" sound as the title suggests while keeping the same killer psych flavor as the A-side.
Known primarily for his work alongside Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia on their collaborative album "Hooteroll" while also appearing on the Dead's seminal "American Beauty" LP, Howard Wales had already established himself as a talented player during the mid-1960's working and touring with the likes of Ronnie Hawkins, the Four Tops and the Godfather of Soul himself James Brown. A true original and progenitor of the oft-used but mostly maligned "Acid Jazz" genre, Howard Wales paved the way for the psychotropically enhanced excursions of 70s' Jazz, Funk, Soul and fusion.

Review: Disco dub-a-holics will be flipping over this dusty four track chunk-a-funk-a-thon of re-edited grooves. You're a better man than I if you can ID these originals, but this record is spot on for the Rong, Idjut Boys, Moxie and Bear Funk disco-dub-punk heads. Some nice funky retro electro disco on "Shameless Edit" while "125" is a drummy electronic percussive workout with some cool filtered effects. Super Moroder soundtrack-styled action "The Bridge Ain't Over".

As this reissue proves, Weeks' original version is rubbery, heavy and rousing, with the singer's rasping lead vocal soaring above a weighty backing track that sounds like a breezier take on the New York boogaloo sound. On the flip, Voodoocuts tools it up for modern dancefloors, underpinning his club-ready edit with punchy new drums that give the cut more of a breakbeat style swing.
