Review: Libretto recently unveiled his sixth album, Rusty Bladez, with Seattle icon Vitamin D handling production and lending verses of his own. From the cover featuring his inmate ID, the album delves into Libretto's reflections on his time in the Federal Penitentiary system and finds him vividly recounting his experiences pre and post-incarceration. Vitamin D's masterful production strikes a balance between sombre tones and infectious grooves, and now two of the best cuts from the 17-track full length are pressed up here onto a crucial 7" that provide a cinematic journey crafted by two West Coast veterans.

Surfin' Summer (3:18)
Remember (3:12)
Breeze (3:16)
Review: Cold Busted ventures into downtempo and Balearic territory here with Vanilla offering up a limited but 7" full of hazy and lo-fi beat sketches that make you ache for a sun lounger and a warm day. The gentle beats of 'Pointbreak' are offset by wonky and detuned chords that bring a sense of irreverence and 'Surfin' Summer' then casts you adrift on nice lazy sax motifs. 'Remember' keeps the grooves slow and low and 'Breeze' shuts down with another cathartic and open-skied sonic excursion. A perfect accompaniment to some mental escapism, then.

Never Give Up (5:44)
Never Give Up (Chill Zone mix) (6:03)
You Stole My Heart (vinyl mix) (5:05)
You Stole My Heart (remix) (5:06)
Review: Fans of UK street soul from the mid-80s you need this one in your life as Heels & Souls Recordings returns with its eighth reissue and unveils some treasures by Elaine Vassell and 3rd Zone. In 1993, amidst the rise of house music, UK soul thrived, accompanied by its DIY street soul sibling as perfectly exemplified here by 'Never Give Up' which boasts a raw, breakbeat-driven groove, blending soulful house, hip-hop, and r&b, while 3rd Zone's 'You Stole My Heart' from 1991, later featured on their 1993 EP No Real Reason, offers a tender yet tough underground vibe. Both tracks showcase the era's spirit, proving that creativity trumps big budgets. Each side includes an alternate version for added depth and diversity.

Electric Relaxin (4:55)
Check The Rhyme (4:17)
Cool Like That (5:08)
All Night Long (5:51)
Review: No production outfit keeps a pace of output quite like Vibez '93. The latest four-track record from the shadowy d&b profuser now hears them summon sampled echoes of A Tribe Called Quest and Digable Planets respectively, culling choice acapella selections from the debut albums Low End Theory and Reachin', exegeting the former's titular theory for a hard transpose into sheller drum & bass. 'Electric Relaxation' and 'Check The Rhime' are blown out across a two-side jazzstep liquescence, while 'Cool Like That' and 'All Night Long' make for finer-brushed summer steps.

Review: Vibez '93 top up their seemingly ever-flowing V/A series with a fresh one. 'Return Of The Mack' continues their recent spate of hip-hop flips, with Biggie Smalls, Mark Morrison and Sunshine Anderson adorning the various rollages on display here. Given the historical interplay between hip-hop and drum & bass, the fusion is unsurprisingly neat, though '93 lends things an extra energy we're confident few others could summon.

Double A - "You Can't Front On That" (4:21)
Review: This 7" delivers a double dose of expertly crafted edits that pay homage to iconic sounds. Side-1 features Vitamin D's 'Roger That', a funky, Roger Troutman-inspired masterpiece. With seamless edits of classic elements from Troutman's catalogue, the track is a groove-laden tribute packed with nostalgia and dancefloor appeal.Flip to Side-2 for Double A's 'You Can't Front On That', a clever rework reminsicent of the Beastie Boys' Check Your Head era. Double A skillfully amplifies the track's raw energy, blending its gritty funk and hip-hop essence into a crisp, modern edit. Both sides showcase sharp production and an undeniable love for their source material. Hip-hop and early electro funk heads unite!

Review: The mighty Dez Andres has hooked up with Parisian digger Victor Kiswell for a sublime new double album on Spot Lite that finds a perfect sweet spot between both men's sound. It stems from a party that explores Arabic grooves from Northern Africa and the Middle East and pairs that with low slung deep house beats and hip-hop inspired joints. It's woozy and warm, packed with killer melodies and hooky riffs and is right up there with some of Dez's best work. Highlights include the likes of 'Grand Meze In Gemmayze' with its dusty beats and 'Bounce The Casbah' with Middle Eastern guitars that ring out with great soul.

Review: With 'breaking' making its debut in the 2024 Paris Olympics, it seems an apt time to go back to where it all began and showcase some of the music that first made break-dancers move in the early years of hip-hop culture. Soul Jazz Records clearly agrees, hence this two-disc retrospective of early 'breaker' favourites curated by Arthur Baker - a man who's productions and remixes soundtracked many dancefloor battles in the early 80s. It's a suitably strong selection all told, with dusty funk, soul and funk-rock favourites (Johnny Bristol, James Brown, The Jimmy Castor Bunch, Spanky Wilson) being joined by disco-funk jams (Herman Kelly and Life), extra-percussive workouts (Manu Dibango, Mongo Santamaria, Candido) and a smattering of key Baker productions (Afrika Bambaata and Soul Sonic Force's 'Planet Rock' and his own infectious 'Breakers Revenge').

Much of it is made from live instrumentation with a healthy dose of nostalgia next to inventive new styles.

He comes up with plenty of mega hard to find and expensive musical treasures that have all been painstakingly researched and tracked down. It was a short lived but fertile scene in the underground back in the 90s and if you didn't; know that already you will after one listen through of this - the sounds are highly danceable with silky, low-lit melodies and steamy and seductive vocals for loved up late night dancing.

Review: Finding out that 8 Mile is two decades old is astounding. Take it in, breathe, then decide what to do with that information. Rewind back to 2003, and life was very, very different - not least as Eminem was still considered a young upstart who needed to prove some stuff to the hip hop establishment, with the movie in question going some way to retelling his own story about going up against haters and coming out on top.
Of course, he was already one of the biggest rap artists on the planet by this point, but still fell in line for criticism over the juvenile nature of many tracks. Amalgamating some of the most respected MCs on one track list - all of who evidently give a seal of approval by contributing to this soundtrack - is certainly one way to prove legitimacy. Nas, 50 Cent, Rakim, Gang Starr, and Jay-Z help make this one of the genre's finest scores of all time.

Having built a steady beatmaking operation initially from Studio Ghibli thematics and other anime associations, the group now continue to turn their hand to originals, furthering your capacity to wind down after many a long, protracted cramming sesh. Review: In truth, not all DJs are genuine "tastemakers", but Lefto most certainly is. Like the similarly minded - if far older and more experienced - Gilles Peterson, Lefto gets as much pleasure from introducing people to new and obscure music, as he does from rocking clubs. It's for that reason The Beauty Is Inside, a terrific, lightly blended mix of eclectic, far-sighted sounds hand-picked by the Belgian, is such essential listening. It naturally contains some slept-on tackle from the past - see the cuts by Ethiopian singer Alemayeu Eshete and South African artist Patience Africa - but even more killer contemporary fare, with highlights including the contributions of Qur'an Shaheed, Elisa Bee, fellow Belgians abrahamblue and contemporary jazz hero Makaya McCraven.

Review: If you like Madlib then you will like this - a new and exclusive 28-track collection of the legendary hip-hop icon's best collaborations. Featuring are the likes of A.G., Guilty Simpson, MED, Oh No and Strong Arm Steady, with Karriem Riggins appearing for a Supreme Team session. There is also a special track taken from the Jaylib-era that was meant to be on a second album which never ended up being released. To finish it off, plenty of Loop Digga instrumentals, as well as some textbook interludes and outerludes also help colour this one and make it such a vivid listen.

Review: With a superhero like Spiderman being recognised the world over by those who've legitimately never even held a comic book, it makes sense that any film adaption should rely on the current sounds of the modern era to deliver an entertaining and reliably engaging soundtrack. Where 2002's game-changing Sam Raimi adaptation boasted a retrospectively cheesy bevvy of nu-metal adjacent radio rock with the film's lead single even being penned by Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, the music selection on this latest experimental animated series of films; Across The Spider Verse, turns to the current realms of radio dominating pop-rap. Overseen by acclaimed trap producer Metro Boomin and enlisting a who's who of modern artists such as Don Toliver, Lil Uzi Vert, Future, Nas and A$AP Rocky to name just a small handful, the collection serves equally as an of the time and on the pulse soundtrack, but also as a banging collaborative compilation of some of the best hip-hop acts in the scene today.

Paul Morley - "Lost For Words" (part 4 - Exclusive Spoken Word Piece) (10:13)
Review: Joe Mount of lovable scuzz pop outfit Metronomy mans the latest volume in the long running Late Night Tales, a series who always seem to get the best results out of an unexpected cast of participants (Belle & Sebastien, MGMT, Trentemoeller and Midlake being recent inductees). It's hard not to get sucked in from the sugar sweet opening of Outkast's "Prototype", which is the first of several tracks that demonstrates Mount has a penchant for slow bumping R&B and outsider hip-hop with Tweet, Sa Ra and a Dr Octagon classic also appearing. A typically far reaching approach to genres applies here with the cosmic jazz of Chic Corea happily mingling with Autechre and Two Lone Swordsmen, and American synth oddities Geneva Jacuzzi and Appaloosa mingling for attention with The Alan Parsons Project and Herman Dune. The de-rigueur cover version arrives with a Metronomy rendition of Jean-Michel Jarre's "Hypnose" while Paul Morley ends the selection with a spoken word piece. This vinyl edition has 18 of the tracks spread separately across two plates as well as the mixed CD and a booklet!

They have made him a firm festival favourite over on these shores and as such he was tapped up back in 2021 to make his entry into the esteemed Late Night Tales series. As per the MO, he takes a deep dive into his record collection to soundtrack a session back at his once the sun has gone down. Review: Smoove props up his rep as a highly consistent big beat, funk and disco crossover producer with a freight-class shipment of 'Heavy Goods'. Somersaulting out from his Geordie soul group Smoove & Turrell - on top of his sought-after multi-track vinyl re-edits, as well as his remixing prowess across hip-hop, soul, and funk - this Jalapeno Records follow-up continues Smoove's recent favourite postal theme. Indeed, the postal system is what keeps us afloat (and cue the boundless irony of Royal Mail's latest sale to a Czech billionaire, the name of whose LLC is, apropos of online music retail, "EP Group"). Betty Black & The Family Fortune, Emma Noble, Kraak & Smaak, Izo FitzRoy, The High & Mighty, and Bahama Soul Club, all are all loaned Smoove's Pygmalion hand, honing a musing work of art from many a die-cut classic. Whirlwind D's 'Labels', Izo Fitzroy's 'Blind Faith' and TGH Collective's 'Higher Collective' are special versions too. Assuming you didn't already know the songs in question, you really wouldn't be able to tell the edit jobs from the originals. Mint condition!

Review: Pat Van Dyke - presumably no relation of trance overlord Paul or owner of the most terrible English accent in the history of cinema, Dick - builds on 2018's Hello, Summer LP with a new album full of funk, bounce and rich harmonies. Falls To Pieces is part hip hop, part jazz, part fusion album with gentle keys washing over the dusty drum breaks as rock-solid bass lines underpin the lovely rhythmic guitar work. Here, more than ever before, Van Dyke shows himself to be a maturing composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who has developed his sound without losing his signature.

Now we're being given an authoritative view into the label's world with this expansive compilation, Soon Come. Review: Soul Jazz Records' Boombox series is back with another crucial installment, this time focussing on the early days of hip-hop, electro and disco rap. These multicultural scenes have their roots in community centres, block parties and street jams that were appearing back in the Bronx. It's another fine and fulsome collection across six sides of vinyl and features some of the many innovative names from between 1979 and 1983. All of them are rare, classic and obscure tracks that come with stunning photography from Sophie Bramly who got rare access to document the early days of this scene in New York.

This is an unashamed collection of what the label thinks are the biggest tunes and most classic joints from across the years all on one triple vinyl set. Some unpredictable inclusions are the likes of Radiohead's otherworldly hymn 'Everything In Its Right Place' amongst standouts like Snooze's 'The Chase' (Revisited By Fila Brazilia).

Review: Who remembers when Hip Hop was a force for good? A happy, colourful sound brimming with positivity and realness, rather than the blingy boasts of studio gangsters? Whether you do or don't, this new Daisy Age compilation by Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley is a timely release that shines a light on that small but golden era back in the late 80s. Key protagonists like Jungle Brothers and A Tribe Called Quest, as well as De La Soul, whose "3 Feet High and Rising" album was at the centre of this micro-movement, all feature alongside Pop and R&B with a similarly positive outlook. Essential.

Review: We're big fans of Aloha Got Soul and that only deepness when we learn about this new project, Mix Plate. It's a compilation spotlighting fresh music from emerging artists rooted in Hawai'i after the label has traditionally focused on reissuing overlooked gems from the 1970s and 1980s. Now they mark a shift towards supporting today's voices. Featuring artists who call Hawai'i home-some staying, others returning after venturing elsewhere-the compilation celebrates their commitment to shaping the island's contemporary sound. Through their music, they express identity, heritage and experience while also offering a healthy respect for the past.

Review: The Inner Tribe Records crew here celebrate the very best of their works, inviting over four sides' worth of contributions to the label over the years from such friends and associates as Erin Buku, Prozier, JuzzOne, Inkswel and DJ Applejac. Finding a locus of enjoyment in the theme of family, this spicy soul, hip-hop and funk collection aims to flesh out each of their roster-thrall's individual characters; it does so charmingly, in the cute interplay between the Polaroid memorabilia making up the front cover and the well-balanced hi-fi lo-fi moods found inside. Our favourite on the comp has to be Ben Iota's 'Present Company', for its large-surround chords and weighty rap mix.

Review: Don't be fooled by the title of this compilation; this isn't just birdsong pressed to wax. Rather, each artist invited to contribute to 'A Guide To The Birdsong of Western Africa' was challenged to make an original song both using and inspired by an endangered bird from their country. The album, in its ingenuity, was produced to help fund the Nigerian Bird Atlas Project (NIBAP), a public initiative to encourage young Nigerians get into bird conservation, watching and atlasing. Standouts include Lamine Cissokho's kora imitate the 'Yellow-casqued hornbill', and the lilting call of the 'Nimba flycatcher' included in a warming voice-and-guitar bossa nova piece by Ruth Tafebe.

Review: Landing several months after it was presumably intended to be released (we blame the inevitable vinyl pressing delays), this bustling triple-vinyl set is a sequel to Parisian imprint LoFi Records' Halloween-themed compilation of 2023. Featuring fresh artists delivering spooky-themed tunes - coded with liberal use of sustained organ sounds, jaunty melodies and frequently head-nodding beats - it's a largely instrumental affair packed with tracks that are frequently as melodious and ear-catching as they are horror-tinged. Highlights include the post-air trip-hop shuffle of 'A Pumpkin's Farewell' by Frances The Mute v Lenny B, the DJ Cam-esque headiness of Swink's 'Bloody Night', the sring-laden folk-horror-goes-hip-hop flex of Alto vs Lenny Loops' 'Hollow' and the haunted headiness of Solar Body's 'Hocus Pocus'.

Review: Soul Jazz Records' Boombox series is back with another crucial instalment, this time focussing on the early days of hip-hop, electro and disco rap. These multi-cultural scenes have their roots in community centres, block parties and street jams that were appearing back in the Bronx. It's another fine and fulsome collection across six sides of vinyl and features some of the many innovative names from between 1979 and 1983. All of them are rare, classic and obscure tracks that come with stunning photography from Sophie Bramly who got rare access to document the early days of this scene in New York.

Review: Portland's contemporary music makers and the city's historic Black music community come together on this new remix project which draws from the Albina Music Trust's archive. Across the long player, the artist reinvents the sounds of Portland's Black musicians with a modern beat-based sensibility, all of which subtly pay homage to the 1968 "Soul Assembly" program by the Black Student Union which educated audiences about Black Portland's cultural identity. Among many standouts are reimagined works by Jonny Cool, Jumbo of The Lifesavas and Tony Ozier who do a fine job of bridging generations and highlighting Portland's rich heritage.

Review: New Jill Swing is a vibrant throwback that captures the essence of late 80s and early 90s female r&Bb, offering a refreshing take on the male-dominated New Jack Swing era. This collection shines a spotlight on the talented women who matched, if not surpassed, their male counterparts, delivering smooth, soulful tracks that defined a golden age of R&B. From SWV's infectious 'I'm So Into You' remix to Karyn White's upbeat 'The Way You Love Me,' the album kicks off with undeniable energy. Gems like En Vogue's 'Lies' remix and Xscape's 'Love On My Mind' keep the groove going, blending attitude with vocal finesse. The compilation also includes lesser-known but equally powerful tracks like Ex Girlfriend's 'What I Will Do To You' and Chantay Savage's 'Betcha'll Never Find,' adding depth and variety. Each song is a nostalgic journey, perfectly curated to remind listeners of the era's distinctive sound. Overall, New Jill Swing is an enjoyable and well-crafted homage to the women who helped shape R&B.
