Review: Bernard "Pretty" Purdie and his Playboys were an iconic funk group of the late 70s who had big hits with the likes of Gil Scott Heron on his seminal 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' single. A year later on the same label, Flying Dutchman, they served up the 'Heavy Soul Slinger' single which gets reissued here. It's driven by big drum breaks and funky hits, with plenty of lush chords and rolling basslines all taking you on a high class and sophisticated trip. On the a-side is Harold Alexander 's 'Mama Soul' from the same era, but with a much more experimental sound rooted in wordless ad libs and frantic flutes.

Review: Matasuna Records take us on a trip back to late 60s Panama, offering up two supremely rare tracks which, on their original pressings, would be a costly investment if you were lucky enough to find them. The A-side belongs to Camilo Azuquita and his joyous 'Borombon', a track bristling with exuberant brass and striking piano. On the B-side, Panama Brass lay down 'Con La Mano En La Biblia', a lively affair led by organist Cristobal Munoz Jr and featuring some of the best musicians in Panama at the time.

Review: Soul Jazz Records' new must-have compilation "Kaleidoscope" does a great job in celebrating the vibrancy of the UK's fast-growing contemporary jazz scene. For some reason the vinyl version of the release omits the two tracks featured here, hence the label offering them up on a limited-edition 12" single that they say will never be repressed or reissued. The A-side features Sons of Kemet member (and renowned tubist/trombonist) Theon Cross's "Candace of Meroe", a bustling affair that riffs on the polyrhythmic Afrobeat sound of Tony Allen and Fela Kuti whilst taking it in a decidedly jazzier new direction. Over on the flip psychedelically inclined duo Pokus delivers "Pokus 1", a wonderfully low-slung and spaced-out affair that adds mind-altering, mutilated electric piano motifs to a deliciously weighty, low-slung groove.

In its original form, "Vibes From The Tribe" is a deliciously warm and hazy chunk of intergalactic dancefloor jazz rich in skittish, post-hip-hop drums, gently rising horns, spacey effects and spiritual spoken word vocals. It's utterly brilliant as is Al Breadwinner's flipside dub, which takes the pair's original version even deeper into space via copious amounts of reverb, tape-echo and traditional Jamaican dub production techniques. We actually like this revision even more than the original, which tells you how good the seven-inch single is. Essential!

Review: Marc Moulin's Placebo band - no, not that Placebo - laid down some killer grooves in its time and WallenBink Records have been digging in the vaults to come up with two long lost recordings which they now present on vinyl. These unreleased outtakes come from the group's second album, 1973. It was first pressed in tiny numbers as a promotional release for Moulin's Sunday night radio show, Dimanche Musique, so is mad rare. They have been taken from the only master tapes that exists and been mastered at Abbey Road studios, so sound superb.

Review: A series of Marc Moulin releases are on the way right now courtesy of various reissue projects and this one is pressed up on nice orange vinyl. The Belgian beatmaker is known for downtempo grooves but shows a different side here with two tracks alongside his band, later known as Placebo but here still known as Kiosk. 'Mona Call' is a busy and jazzy cut with dancing drums. 'Waterproof' arrives on the flip carries on in the same vein, with big horns bursting though the arrangement. These are two of the very many crucial tunes in the Moulin catalogue.

Review: Goats In A Hypnotic State is one of those deep, moving explorations of ambient soundscapes that smudges together ethereal drones, field recording, and mesmerising synth textures. The three-track work evokes a sense of surreal calm as delicate melodies and subtle rhythms build hypnotic atmospheres and each piece unfolds slowly, with layers of sound intertwining to create a vast, meditative space. The organic sounds of nature, such as distant goat calls and wind, ground the work, while the synthetic elements elevate its dreamlike quality. Overall there is no way you can hear this and not be invited into a tranquil, introspective world where time and thought dissolve into the music itself.

Review: Misha Panfilov is an Estonian multi-instrumentalist and producer who is in several well-regarded groups and has put out a rather incredible 18 albums since only 2019. There have been nine EPs in that time and this new one on Funk Night is a real gem. The a-side is cosmic-tinged 60s psyche-funk and campfire rock with tight-as-you-like organic drumming and lush synth work. It's a real delight. On the flip is the more laidback and slow-motion lo-fi funk of 'Jogo', but it still has a nice spaced-out synth side to it that makes it so lush.

Review: At first an obscure library music curio made by Keith Papworth under the aegis of Music De Wolfe - the brainchild of Dutch composer and oboist Meyer De Wolfe - Hard Hitter long flew under the radar as Papworth's unsung instrumental funk magnum opus, that is, until it was reissued in 2022 by Fat Beats, and again now by Dynamite Cuts. We'd wager that it was the Fat Beats reissue that really cemented the legacy of this gem, which placed its intensely sampleable funk breaks in the context of NYC hip-hop culture, cementing its legacy as a favourite sample source for beatmakers, not just a simple and enduring joy in the realm of hard-hitting library funk.

Review: Carol Sawall, Jimmy Ellis, Tyler Mitchell, Usama Pitts and, of course, Paris Smith himself make up the legendary - and much overlooked - The Paris Smith Quintet, and are famed for the infamous Thought Seeds LP that came out on Oracle Records way back in 1983. While they have all done their own thing on the side, this particular album has reached cult fandom in the free-jazz category, and is still referenced by many as the 'one'. Norway's Jazzagression have reissued it in all its glory, and have also put out a single comprised of its tow best cuts, "Thought Seeds" and "Lilith Came". The former is a moody, powerful track with a danceable bassline, while the latter fades the drums and energy into a marvelously placid wave of melodies and harmony. Wonderful.

Review: Dopebrother Records throw it back to 2006 with the reissue of this Latin-tinged funk and soul gem. It's a split EP featuring work from Steve Parks and Steve Marhsall and will cost you a few quid for an original on the seance hand market. 'Sadness In My Samba' has a lovely South American shuffle with happy whistles and silky vocals, 'All In A Day' is a more sentimental tune that moves on a nice rolling rhythm with plenty of organic perc and then comes 'Still Thinking Of You', the most sentimental of the lot. It's a blue-eyed soul tune with aching flutes and then a flute solo instrumental closes things down.

Review: A scorching 7" - it's gritty and it's got that classic-sounding funk and soul feel, kicking things off with 'Driptorch' which exudes fiery energy, crunchy drums, funky guitar and screaming Hammond organ recalling the golden age of soul-jazz. Review: Chicago multi-genre music collective Patchwork Inc. offer a distinct, subtle blend of pianistic soul and cinematic warmth on their latest 7" for Colemine. Elusively cryptic and seemingly not entirely willing to divulge their membership, we do know that North Carolina native Taylor Williams and Chicago journeyman Wyatt Waddell are nonetheless involved: their conjoined hands craft heartfelt ambles through smoothly arranged backbeats and ride-tsking R&B phrases, evoking farewell-bidding moods and last-ditch begs for togetherness.

Review: The soundtrack for Shaft in Africa combines the distinctive talents of composer Johnny Pate who made the classic theme tune, and soul legend Bobby Womack. Pate's orchestral compositions brought a lush, cinematic feel while blending funk, jazz and African-inspired rhythms that very much capture the film's themes of action and cultural exploration. Womack's contributions include the iconic 'Across 110th Street' which gets a funky Soopasoul edit here, with plenty of guitar stabs, splashy cymbals and loose-limbed grooves. The movie stands as a hallmark of 1970s blaxploitation cinema and the sounds from it are still superbly relevant and rewarding.

Review: Johny Pate is a soundtrack maestro who had his work flipped superbly by Archie Shepp here. He pulled off something superb with this one which is a much-loved funk and rare groove breakbeats anthem and made it to 7" vinyl for the first time back in February but soon sold out despite the high price because it was a Japan-only release. It now gets this much-needed reissue, again in limited quantities and is backed with a lovely soul gem from Bobby Womack. Do not sleep on this one cause it might not come around again for a while.

Review: Kellee Patterson's Kellee LP recently got its first ever reissue adn it shifted super quick. Now some fo the great tunes form it are making it onto their own 7"s for DJ deployment. The original album came in 1976 after her debut Maiden Voyage on Black Jazz Records. Both were produced by Gene Russell and this single from it is a superbly seductive jazz and soul cover of Barry White's masterpiece 'I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More, Baby.' On the flip is a busier jazz-funk cut 'Once Not Long Ago' which brings some fire.
