Review: Julien Baker's debut 'Sprained Ankle' garnered critical acclaim on its release last year for its impressive writing. Considering Baker's age, at only 22 years old she's already creating worlds of stunning dream-pop with a craftsmanship that could stir envy in more experienced songwriters. 'Turn Out The Lights' showcases her talent even further, exploring a melancholy world against a backdrop of sparse echoing instrumentation. The moments of subtle intensity are striking, such as the album's cinematic opening 'Over', whose stirring strings and sparse piano pour seamlessly into the next track 'Appointments. Baker's voice is controlled and her harmonies are arresting, and she uses expansive vocal layering to build intensity, pulling back just before it overbears the listener. This impressive second milestone in Baker's work is heartfelt, cathartic and more than impressive.

Review: Band of Horses' debut "Everything All The Time" was one of ten finalists for the Shortlist Music Prize (equivalent to the UK's Mercury prize) and received rave reviews in NME, Uncut, and a slew of other music mags. Their new LP, "Cease To Begin", is a strikingly beautiful record. It has honesty, sincerity and passion and proves to be truly inspiring.

Review: Jillian Rose Banks' debut 'Goddess' wasted little time in rendering her a name to be reckoned with in contemporary R&B on its release in 2014, its emotionally engaging cadences being as slick as they were seductive. 'The Altar' however marks her stepping up a gear whilst maintaining her inimitable style, the sophisticated sheen of her sound juxtaposed against a rawness of delivery and frankness of subject matter. Past relationships bad and good are eviscerated, not to mention Banks herself, her honeyed tones dealing frankly with matters of the heart and the psyche with trademark scalpel-sharp intensity even whilst lost in a distinctly sultry sound-world.

Review: The poker-faced, jeans-wearing trio Bar Italia are back. Thus far, and across a sparse and steady stream of largely digital singles and albums - with grainy, Photo Booth and MS Paint-style visual editing to boot - they've managed to summon a strange form of mysterious, but relationally sad Britishness in their music. In our opinion they're often mis-touted as a shoegaze act, so we hope their latest LP and first-time Beggars release Tracey Denim here dispels that myth. Whether getting at the just-out-of-reach noughties blindspot nostalgia of Tracey Beaker, or nodding to the depressive relic-making of Tracey Emin, one fact remains: this is Bar Italia's most refined work yet, taking their increasingly emo sound to its most logical conclusions, while demonstrating mastery over the same boxy, warped naivete that has always defined them.

Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett returns with a third solo album that makes another assured leap forwards. The artist here sounds truly relaxed and comfortable in herself and with her art. She serves up an exquisite world of sound that is intimate and inviting thanks to the fine production work from Stella Mozgawa, who is known for her work with Warpaint, Sharon Van Etten and Kurt Vile. This most intimate and personal work has alluring groovers like 'Before You Gotta Go' and the optimistic 'Write A List Of Things To Look Forward To.' It arrives on a lovely limited gatefold blue vinyl with a spot-varnished sleeve.

Review: If you're even close to 35-years-old, the initialisation "MTV" and the word "Unplugged" likely conjures images of peak-hype Nirvana, arguably the most defining and revered of all this format's many moments. Nevertheless, Courtney Barnett's electric-free contribution to the series, recorded live in Melbourne, may well be the best conceived in the episodic series. Rather than going down the usual "Unplugged" route - hits, covers of classics and a few from the new album, sans power chords, - Barnett confirms what those paying close attention have always known to be true. Yes, she's an inspiring and inspired artist, as work like "Nameless, Faceless" shows (here turned into a duet even more resonant and chilling than the original). But she's also a community leader, a gifted collaborator who has nurtured peers - and with half this album reimagining others, she's clearly still determined to let them shine.

Review: On her new album, End of The Day (Music From The Film Anonymous Club), Courtney Barnett opted to score music to the candid documentary she made about her personal travails and hard-fought triumphs. It documented her journey from the bottom to the top of the indie rock scene over the course of the last ten years and follows a classic redemption arc with the score adding all new levels of emotional intensity and narrative. Alongside collaborator Stella Mozgawa, she made a series of instrumental improvisations which have been reworked into one impressionistic sound-art collage.

Review: Originally released in 2012, the sophomore full-length from Ipswich emo outfit Basement is still heralded by some more clued up observers as one of the quintessential projects of the 90s grunge revival. Drawing on influences from the likes of Pearl Jam, Pixies, Soundgarden and Jimmy Eat World, the material balances college rock camaraderie with bombastic riffs and melancholic musings, conjuring a new form of hardcore-adjacent alternative rock that continues to be popularised today by outfits such as Turnstile and Militarie Gun. Set to make their grand return at Outbreak Fest 2024, and over half a decade since the release of 2018's Beside Myself, it appears as if a new chapter for Basement is right around the corner. So what better opportunity/excuse to revisit Colourmeinkindness to remind yourself of where it all began?

Review: 10 years on since their smash No.1 hit 'Pompeii', a song that has solidified itself in UK pop history in its own right, British singer-songwriter Dan Smith's brainchild Bastille's Bad Blood X still packs the same punch. It's easy to see why 'Pompeii' was such a runaway success, the insanely catchy hook and the dynamic vocal chants over that thudding drum beat...everybody knows it. To commemorate a decade since this defining record, Universal are producing a limited gatefold coloured LP, that will include a brand new 7" vinyl with two never-before-heard demos, 'RACING HEART' (Laura Palmer Demo) / 'POET' (Dan's Bedroom Demo) both recorded in Smith's parents' loft. Also in the package will be a 16-page 12×12 book featuring new, unreleased artwork, notes from each band member and handwritten annotations and a track list from Smith - as well as a 12×12 double sided insert with an alternative cover and more unarchived art. For Bastille fans old and new this is an undisputed must-have.

Review: Don't believe everything you read - the fifth Bat For Lashes album confirms this girl (or woman) found herself musically and thematically some time ago, freeing up creative energy to explore new approaches to deliver her often mournful, always heartfelt songs inspired by personal crises and private longings. On this outing there's more than a hint of 1980s pop evident in the mix. Shades of Prince ("Feel For You"), Madonna ("So Good"), Bowie's Berlin days and electro-era Gary Numan (the stunning, infectious instrumental "Vampires") cast the record in a nostalgia that suits the sense of yearning that always seems to pervade Natasha Khan's work. Simply name-checking reference points is lazy and unfair, though. This is an incredible collection of tracks moulded in the artist's own image - bold, beautiful and instantly captivating. Then again, it would be surprising if anyone had expected anything less.

Review: "A document created in the shadow of incredible darkness. One from which the creator hadn't planned on escaping and still doesn't. Hence the title of the album. It is the result of an illness that I've battled my whole life. It isn't something that the world has done to me. It's the world I live in, and it's no one's fault."
So says Brian Christinzio, AKA BC Camplight, of his sixth album. As ever, it's a musical masterpiece packing dense layers of instrumental experimentation and theses-worthy lyrical poignance. An artist who has never played by the musical rules, fans of strong juxtapositions will again be in there element, with a tracklist that spans grunge-y garage rock, twisted barroom journeyman stuff, theatrical guitar pop, and plenty more. But the sounds themselves are only one half the genius. When it comes to arrangements, things are as playful as they are innovative, keeping listeners guessing as to how structures will pan out.

The four-piece from East Yorkshire had plenty of plaudits following their debut record and so quickly rode a wave to notoriety back in 2020. But then the classic difficult second album fever struck them and so did lots of conversations with labels. Finally, they got to work on this record and it is a thrilling divergence, a new mix of new influences with lyrics rooted in social consciousness and themes including addiction and mental health struggles. A huge tour is to follow, as will many more new fans and plaudits.

Review: Beach Fossils are regarded as bedroom-pop trailblazers from Brooklyn. They were one of the most influential and well-loved New York bands of the 2010s and manage to find some of that form here on new album Bunny. As inventors of jangle pop, they revisit that with some extra warm and stylish songwriting, lush dream-pop moods and hints of post-punk energy. Lyrical themes include the joys of being a father and other equally brilliant but less noble subjects such as how good it is to smoke a cigarette out of a car window with friends.

Review: Beach House return with another inevitably washed out dream pop pipe-fantasy - and perhaps a magnum opus, being 18 tracks long - 'Once Twice Melody'. We can confirm the LP scales a more minimal and wondrous sound than their career-definer, 'Depression Cherry'. As ever, noir slow jams canopy an ever-ghostlier vocal palette on lead singles like 'Over And Over' and 'Superstar'. Even a live string ensemble was used in its recording. Stonkingly, it comes in various limited-edition formats. One, the "gold" edition, includes a gold and clear 2xLP record in a gold-embossed, hinged box. The "silver" edition is housed in a silver embossed black sleeve. Oh, and there's a cassette version too, for all you indie heads out there.

Review: Here comes a special double vinyl box set edition of Beach House's latest album, Once Twice Melody, which was the first one the band themselves have ever produced in its entirety. It was recorded in three different locations - Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, United Studio in Los Angeles, and Apple Orchard Studios in Baltimore. The band used a real and full live string ensemble for the first time, too, and David Campbell took care of arrangements. It is a double album that features 18 songs presented in four chapters that take in many different sound and structures centred around acoustic guitar, some around drums, and some around electronics.

Review: It may be debatable whether B-sides still exist in the here and now, yet beneath the very slightly prosaic title of this compendium lurks the work of an outfit who - despite having essentially surfed along a very definitive wave of sun-dappled languour since their inception - are capable of delivering offcuts that are every bit the equal of most folks' hits. True, the Spinal Tap insult of 'the musical growth rate of this band cannot even be charted' could be applied to Beach House, but when their catalogue over the ten years of their existence esentially consists of a variety of themes on opiated bliss, we're only too happy to embark on the ride.

Review: Long-time indie darlings and American dream pop duo Beach House barely ever put a foot wrong, and you won't find a misstep on this, their fifth album, either. Depression Cherry was co-produced by the band with Chris Coady and first came back in 2015. It was written over two years before that and saw the band return to a more simplistic sound with fewer instruments, tunes constructed around a main melody and live drums featuring less than in the past. This was in response to having enlarged their sound as the venues they played grew ever bigger, but dialing it back in was a good move if you ask us.

Review: "Hyperspace" sees Beck venture further down the pop road, drafting in a wealth of high profile, stadium-filling collaborators to realise what's arguably his most synthesised work to date. Full marks to anyone who, upon blind taste test, immediately jumped to the conclusion this was indeed Beck. Fear not, that's less a result of his iconic and infinitely listenable voice not shining through, and more down to what else is in these arrangements. Working with legendary studio genius Pharrell Williams (who co-produced and co-wrote), you'll also find Coldplay's Chris Martin and Georgia, US rapper and drummer Terrell Hines involved here, amongst others. Together with these names we're taken into a soaring, immersive and glittering world of sophisticated but chart-friendly anthems, from clap-a-long number "Die Waiting", to the epic space-rock closer "Everlasting Nothing".

Review: There's always an awful lot to talk about with Beck - an American rock icon whose enigmatic character is defined by the fact labels like 'American rock icon' are way too simplistic. Hyperspace couldn't be a more useful example, a record that turns its attention to a sci-fi R&B pop sound that's an immediate giveaway of Pharrell Williams' involvement as producer on more than half the album.

All of which would be jarring if this weren't Beck, a proper shapeshifter. Pulling it off with far more than aplomb implies, it's a warm, sexy evening ride through the e-funked up streets of LA on a warm night exceptionally juxtaposed with a lyrical flavour that's sorrowful and reflective, the product of both the artist's failing relationship at the time of writing and his well-documented understanding of the human condition.

Review: Sunshine Hit Me is the debut album from the British band The Bees. A testament to summery jovialty and DIY ingenuity, the album is as raw and earthen as it is soulful, with the band at the time only made up of founding members Paul Butler and Aaron Fletcher, who wrote, performed and recorded the album alone using a home studio in Butler's parents' garden on the Isle Of Wight. Don't be confused by the LP's normative categorisation as "indie rock"; deft listeners can hear everything from reggae to neo-soul in this one, flaunting the pair's impressive musical education going into its making.

Review: It's been a turbulent four-year period leading up to the release of 'No No No' for Zach Condon, including a divorce, a breakdown and a period in hospital in Australia for exhaustion. Yet surprisingly, he appears to have arrived at the other side with what may be his most uplifting and direct record to date. Far from the orchestrated, nostalgic laments of his earlier work, 'No No No' evolved from songs written as a piano-led trio, and is a short and sweet work dominated by understated '70s pop style arrangements, representing a reinvention that strips back to the radiant melody that was always at the heart of his music.

Review: Hadsel is a first full length record since Beirut dropped their 2019 work Gallipoli. It is the first on Zach Condon's own Pompeii Records label and was recorded on the Norwegian album from which it takes its name. Condon had to cancel a tour in 2019 to focus on getting well after a breakdown and used the process to recover after growing issues around self doubt. The beautiful songs reflect the vulnerability of the artists with gorgeous melodies and layers of subtly rousing chords, supple rhythms and great contrast between light and dark.

Review: Scottish indie-pop darlings Belle and Sebastian are back with a second album in a year. Late Developers is their 10th overall and came as rather a surprise out of the leftfield when it was first announced at short notice. The first single 'I Don't Know What You See In Me' is a big, rousing, infectious pop tune that reminded us that this band is far from done yet. It is a creative powerhouse that comes some 25 years after their first release and is full of the magical hooks this band is so well known and loved for. From big and energetic cut to dance-ready jams via a co-write with young pop composer Pete Ferguson, this is a real doozy.

Review: Talk about starting the year on a positive note. We're barely a fortnight in and this iconic outfit are already bestowing a startlingly good new record on us - startling not least because it arrives hot on the heels of 2022's Top 10 LP, A Bit of Previous. Also startling just because it's plain brilliant, easily rubbing shoulders with its predecessor in terms of quality.

On their latest adventure we don't sit still for long, with a number of styles both familiar and bold fused together. There's high energy rough and readiness on 'Juliet Naked', psyche pop reigns when 'So in the Moment' drops, and jangling guitars do the business throughout 'When We Were Very Young'. Back with a bang, instant return delivered with aplomb, by this point you have to wonder how they keep doing it.

Review: The Boy With The Arab Strap gets a special 25th Anniversary rerub. The third album by Scottish indie popsicles Belle & Sebastian, originally released in 1998, it's one of the false duo's more acclaimed projects, having notably been made in the space of several months (compared to their first two albums which were supposedly each made in just a couple of days). Also more experimental and collaborative than their earlier work, the album dared to indulge spoken-word segments as well as increasing songwriting contributions from different members of the group. A controversy around the LP's name - indeed, perhaps only some among us will know what an Arab strap is - tops it all off. However, we can assure you that the new liner notes and behind-the-scenes photos included in the reissue don't emphasise its connotations, and instead reminisce over the LP's twinkly, sensitive indie-folk image.

Review: This new album from Benny Sings comes in various different formats - a blue vinyl included, while this version is a straight back wax copy. It features Amsterdam-based artist Benny Sings - who recently had his ART album reissued on Sings - returning with an all new and new eighth solo studio album. For the first time, it is one that finds him working with a single producer throughout - and that producer is the well known beatmaker Mr Kenny Beats. It was a partnership that came together after a chat over social media and the pair immediately felt comfortable with each other. Benny instructed Kenny that he wanted to make the biggest record he has to date and that's what they have done.

Review: Bruno Berle hails from the coastal Brazilian city of Maceio, and he charmed the world in no uncertain terms with his 2022 album No Reino Dos Afetos. Berle's music is steeped in the tradition of MPB and Brazilian music overall, but he combines dreamy songwriting with an artful kind of lo-fi production which makes his sound all the more charming. This follow-up record once again finds Berle working closely with Batata Boy, drawn from the same seven-year period of developing ideas while moving from Maceio to Sao Paulo via some recording sessions in Rio de Janeiro. It's diaristic and scrapbook like, but rendered with such conviction it swoops in around your grey matter and carries you off to somewhere very pleasant indeed.

The band hailed from Paris and were hugely popular in the 80s after coming together around frontman and vocalist Francois Guillemot (who, rather fascinatingly, went on to become a researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research as a specialist of Vietnam.) Guitarist Laurent Katracazos also features on the album as do various rhythm machines and later a saxophone, all of which are wrapped around committed anti-fascist and anti-racist lyrics.

It sure did become a classic and so now gets a 30th anniversary reissue, the first it's ever had. The Dutch band's Carol van Dyk and Peter Visser admit that they were "green as it comes" when they record it but that didn't stop them cooking up plenty of infectious hooks and jangling grooves run through with elements of prog, pop and folk. It's a nostalgic trip to tune into this one three decades on, but one that is well worth making.

Review: Bibio's new album explores pain, loss and suffering but has some hopeful and optimistic melodies bring the light. It's inspired by the "vivid yet vague, impressionistic, powerful yet difficult to recall" power of dreams and as such the tracks all shift and smeared, smudge and melt into one another like intertwining musical collages with more structured pieces in between. As always with Bibio there is a rose-tinted nostalgia to this music and shades of Boards of Canada. Standouts include the likes of 'The Clothesline & The Silver Birch' and 'Flesh Rots, Pip Sown.'

Review: Big Boys are punk visionaries from Austin in Texas and they sure made a big bang with what they described as their "debut, sophomore, and final album." This bunch of renegades came up in the late 1970's Austin scene. The band was led by the dynamic Randy "Biscuit" Turner, alongside Tim Kerr, Chris Gates, and various drummers like Rey Washam. They infused their music with skate funk, which means they somewhat deviated from hardcore norms at the time. Their diverse sound touched on post-punk akin to The Minutemen and inclusion in Thrasher magazine's cult "skate comps" catapulted them to fame among 80s skate punk enthusiasts. Renowned for engaging their live audiences like few others, they fearlessly explored new musical realms, even tackling Kool and the Gang covers at one point.

Produced and mixed by Margo Broom (Goat Girl, Fat White Family), the new project showcases an expansive push in every sonic direction; embracing the lo-fi, fuzzed out din of their Nirvana and Husker Du influences with increased abandon, while the strong pop sensibilities are more flagrant and emboldened this time around. A balancing act between grungy dance-punk, and wistful yet authentic pop, elevated by razor-sharp wit and earnest vulnerability, 2022 appears set to be the year that Big Joanie become a commonplace name in all the right circles.

Fans will know the music is rooted in Adrianne Lenker's songs and "paints in vivid tones the process of harnessing pain, loss, and love, while simultaneously letting go, looking into your own eyes through someone else's, and being okay with the inevitability of death. " Heavy stuff for sure and the music is indeed emotion with Buck Meek on guitar, Max Oleartchik on bass, and James Krivchenia on drums all bringing it to life.

Review: Diane Birch returns with that spellbinding voice - a transportive powerhouse packing a timeless quality that resonates through her music. The American recording world doing what it has always done so well, creating huge, heartbreaking, hopeful, and captivating mini operas disguised as pop. Or, if you want to get technical here: soft rock, country, folk, r&b and soul. OK, so there are elements of funk and jazz, too, and the result is a heady brew that's pretty inescapable. Harking back to the balladry heydays, with shades of Dolly Parton, Whitney Houston, and Carly Simon, to name but a few - in delivery and performance, if not necessarily tone - no matter where you're listening from it's going to be hard to forget this one.

Review: Raincoats' bassist Gina Birch may have delivered the alternative rock 'n' roll song of the year in 'I Play My Bass Loud', title track on this, her debut album, and the record's opener to boot. There's always something to be said for saving the best for a little into an LP track list, but when you're making such bold and unforgettable statements of intent we also appreciate the need to dive right in. A low slung - and fittingly bass heavy - downtempo plodder that oozes cool, swagger, pithy observations and witticisms, it almost feels out of time with today's world, invoking the stoned end of 1990s garage heroes in all the best ways. From thereon in, it's hard to fault anything here, with songs ranging from the weird, jerky 'I Will Never Wear Stilettos' to the ultra-minimalist experimental offering 'I Am Rage', dub wise 'Digging Down' and tortured soul grit of 'Wish I Was With You'. A phenomenal release you need in your life.

Review: Providing continual evolution to the greater aspects of how original folk music can be heard, sung and played, Andrew Bird's run of album's since Echolocations (2015) sees his character and sound venture in a world hallowed only by the likes of Father John Misty; that echolich ability to notate the sweet spots in notes with pangs of nostalgia. Alongside strings of country refrain and minimalism, folk guitars and dandy whislisture, there's a code to be cracked within the thematic of the album, putting paid to suggestion that Andrew Bird's latest work might actually be his best.

Review: "Another Bjork album?!" cry the naysayers. But little do they know they've been duped into thinking the Icelandic legend's last full-length, Utopia, was a recent affair. Actually, it's already been a good five years since the singer's flowery flabbergaster, and collab with experimentalists Arca and Doon Kanda, came to be. Fossora, by contrast, is a much more mournful LP: it's a meditation on generations, and was in part inspired by the death of Bjork's mother. It also contains collaborations with her two children, Sindri and isadora. A homelier affair, revisiting Bjork's upbringing in Iceland, on which she hadn't reflected on record since she was 16.

Review: The tenth studio album by Bjork, released in early 2023, hears the Icelandic singer include increasingly conceptual approaches to making music, a trend which has continued at least since the mid-point of her career at large. Fossora is a concept album about the life cycle of fungi, exploring themes of decay, regeneration, symbiosis and transformation. With cameos from El Guincho and Arca, as well as vocal contributions from Sindri Eldon, isadora Bjarkardottir Barney and the Hamrahlid Choir, it's an ethereal, organic-surreal foray into darkroot gardens and moonlit quasi-fungal butterflies, and the perfect follow-up to the album released five years prior, Utopia.

Review: Nominated for a Grammy Award upon release, Bjork's tenth studio album was a true masterpiece and proved that the Icelandic enigma is far from out of ideas. Aesthetically - both in terms of the visuals and music itself - it's surreal and rich, and this 2023 version adds more to the brew, with additional vocals and extra effects on three of the tracks, including an appearance by her daughter, I?sado?ra Bjarkardo?ttir Barney, and bonus production on 'Ovule'.
Those who missed it first time should know this is one of her least compromising outings - if not the least compromising record she's ever done. Centring on two main sources of inspiration, bass clarinet and gabber music (up there with the most Bjork ideas you've ever heard), despite what that sounds like the LP is all mayhem, warehouse parties and weird woodwind accents. A thing of resolute beauty and visionary ideas, again, our only advice is to take a listen rather than let some writer attempt to explain what's here.

It's Great When You're Straight... Yeah contains ten catchy songs, most prominently the album's preceding hit single 'In The Name Of The Father', with influences from indie-pop, alternative, funk, disco, with rough guitar, rapping all glued together and produced by American Danny Saber. Review: It's only been two years - well, actually, not even that - since we last had an album from The Black Keys. No matter which clock you're looking at, though, fresh work from the Ohio duo can never get here soon enough, and from where we're sitting it sounds like Ohio Players is up there with the greatest records the band have given us. It also proves they're capable of constant reinvention, without risking that clear blues-garage identity. With guest appearance from rapper Lil Noid, legendary guitarist Beck, and Brit-indie icon Noel Gallagher, there's no disguising myriad influencing factors are at play. Yet, across the 14 pieces here, there's something wonderfully, unmistakably Black Keys happening. A thing to savour and submit to in equal measure, then.

Review: Somehow it has now been a full decade since The Black Keys served up their still standout album El Camino. To mark the noteworthy anniversary, here comes a super deluxe edition across five slabs of wax with a poster, insert, photo book, and, um, an air freshener, just in case you own a ride as vintage as the one on the iconic cover. Musically you will know what to expect - indie licks and Americana references, anthemic vocals that are ripe for singing along to and plenty of wry lyrical wit. Listening back now, it's fair to say the album has aged well.

Review: The Black Keys are back with more of that raw, bluesy-soaked rawk they do so well. The duo of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney wrote this new album in the studio, laying down initial ideas in Nashville before expanding the sessions to include collaborators such as Billy F. Gibbons, Greg Cartwright and Angelo Petraglia. Everything you love about the 'Keys is right here, and lead single 'Wild Child' has all the hooks and ear-snagging chorus lines you could wish for, with that dirty, overdriven guitar sound that has been their calling card since they first broke through 20 years ago.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

It's been a solid five years since the epic sounds of America's best plugged-in rock duo last electrified our ears. And be it a reference to the Rolling Stones or even Scorsese, the album turns it up from the start with "Shine A Little Light". Big time rhodes and bluesy folk mentalities are then wrapped up in a low-slung ballad that is "Walk Across The Water". Some fans may still be yearning for the raw energy that catapulted the duo into the limelight with Magic Potion, however high voltage sounds can still be found on tracks like "Under The Gun" and "Lo/Hi" - with gospel elements in this case edging to the fore. Overall there's a slight dance element protruding from this LP in comparison to previous records, begging the question: Can you dig it!

Review: James Blake's rise from outsider electronic producer with signature falsetto vocals to major label darling was remarkable. For his next trick he slinks back to his roots with 'Playing Robots Into Heaven' via Polydor/ Republic harking back to earlier long players like 2013's 'Overgrown' and 2010's 'Klavierwerke'. Lead single ''Big Hammer' has glitchy post-dubstep low ends and eerie synths up top over a skittish and stripped back beat full of grime. This album will be accompanied by a headline international tour later in the year.
