See That Girl (6:46)
Die Die Die (6:59)
Review: It's no wonder there's a nu-gaze movement bubbling up at the moment and showing no sign of dying down - the quality of the godfathers of the genre is just staggering. And you can count Chapterhouse as a key component of the transcendental and viscerally thrilling first wave of shoegaze. This collection features four songs that the Reading-based band recorded in January 1989 - including one that has never been released before. The track in question, 'See That Girl', is as good as any of the more direct songs that bands in their scene released in the 90s. It's their equivalent of Ride's 'Vapour Trail' and strong enough in and of itself to warrant getting the whole EP.

A personal triumph for Charles, the album also tells a larger story that draws on material from various commissions and projects. It brings together key members from his Creole Soul band and mixes up rich musical traditions with innovative arrangements. The album is a vibrant celebration of Caribbean culture and Charles's musical journey which extols his skill as both a composer and bandleader. This is a record that is full of dynamism and cultural depth so is well worthy of your ear.

Review: Tanika Charles has long paired throwback soul with incisive songwriting, but this latest release feels especially raw. Now four albums deep, the Toronto-based artist pivots inwarditrading the usual tales of romance and heartbreak for something more fragile: the fallout of early family trauma. 'Don't Like You Anymore' and 'No More' snap with funk-driven defiance, but it's the quieter moments that linger. 'The Lament' and 'Talk To Me Nice' lean into vulnerability, while 'Win', a duet with Quebec's Clerel, glows with understated uplift. Charles leads a tight teamiScott McCannell, Kyla Charter, and Chino de Villa shape the grooves; Monophonics' Kelly Finnigan adds the rougher edgeibut the clarity here is hers. Her voice, resolute yet tender, is unafraid to ask difficult questions and even braver in leaving them unanswered. There's growth in every chord, as the arrangements span lilting r&b, classic soul, and easy-stepping slow jams. From Polaris nods to JUNO nominations, Charles has long commanded her placeibut this is something more personal, more courageous. Soul music as a form of release, not just rhythm.

Review: A compelling epilogue to the already legendary Brat, an exploration of sub-mainstream pop stardom, delving into anxieties around commercial success via tracks like 'Rewind' and 'Sympathy Is a Knife'. Musically, it's a diverse and experimental space, as Bon Iver, Jon Hopkins, The Japanese House and more take on remix duties, and although the songs are pushed into unexpected sonic territories the influence of a key producer remains clear. Glitchy electronica, pure pop moments and surprising combinations create a dynamic listening experience - the collaborations on tracks like '360' and 'Girl, So Confusing' are particularly effective.

Review: A key figure in Jamaican music who first gained recognition with The Uniques before branching out as a solo artist and producer. By the late 60s, he'd honed his skills in arrangement and keyboard-driven reggae, culminating in Reggae Is Tight and Reggae Charm. Reggae Is Tight bursts to life with the insistent chant of '5 to ', riding a thick organ groove. Charmers reinterprets The Uniques' 'Watch The Sound' as the flowing piano instrumental 'Follow This Sound'. He transforms classics like 'Blue Moon' into reggae gems, while 'Psychedelic Reggae' leans into dubby echo effects. The album thrives on tight, dancefloor-ready rhythms, with 'Stronger' capping off the set in style. His deal with Trojan Records led to Reggae Is Tightia stunning example of his keyboard prowess over driving, fast-paced rhythms. Blending infectious organ grooves with classic boss reggae energy, the album captures the golden era of Jamaican sounds. Now reissued as a limited edition on orange vinyl, Reggae Is Tight remains an essential listen for vintage reggae enthusiasts, highlighting Charmers' innovative touch and deep influence on the genre.

Review: Chase Atlantic's fourth album offers a more mature sound than previous LPs while exploring themes of loneliness, depression and fear. The title reflects the paradox of being in an ideal place yet feeling miserable and the music showcases the band's evolution into a fusion of pop, rock and r&b in their signature genre-defying style. The lead single quickly gained popularity by amassing millions of streams and views and follow-up 'Doubt It' continues the trend with addictive melodies and fresh sounds. Although Chase Atlantic pushes boundaries here, their original fans will still remain happy with the signature energy of this album.

With 2022's God's Country, Oklahoma City sludge metal/noise rock manglers Chat Pile took the underground music scene by the throat and dragged it through the twisted drug addled, decrepit, destitute annals of modern middle America. Returning two years on from their major glow up that saw them land on numerous end of year list that usually wouldn't touch their brand of hubris sonics with a ten foot pole, their sophomore endeavour Cool World trades the initial narrow view of the woes of their home country for the rotting globe at large, taking religion, politicians and narcissistic everyday people to task for their ignorance, malice and docile attitudes which are leading to a culmination of no more cool world for any of us. Expanding their sonic scope to draw on more melodious grunge and sultry goth-rock, while tapping outside production help this time around to make their heaving industrial-tinged noise-sludge bombast even more stomach churning, LP2 makes bad on all of Chat Pile's initial, unsettling promise, with a nauseating feeling that they'll be narrating our end times for as long as there are ears to listen.

Review: With their 2022 debut LP God's Country, the herald of the true face and voice for modern middle-American malaise came in the form of noise-rock/sludge metal purveyors Chat Pile. Broadcasting from their muted home of Oklahoma City, their deformed sonic mutations pulled equally from The Jesus Lizard, Acid Bath and Korn, while vocalist Raygun Busch (that is his credited moniker) appalled and harrowed with his spoken-word nightmare poetics touching on everything from homelessness and the opioid crisis, to real-life recounts of botched robberies and first-person narratives from horror film characters such as the mother of Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th. Expanding their scope both conceptually and compositionally, Cool World takes aim at the entire planet with classism, the horrors of war and genocide, the very real potential for abuse stemming from toxic masculinity, capitalist lies and the nihility of existence all as topics of discussion, while still making time for backwoods journeys into serial killer's isolated farm homes. Musically continuing to pummel with industrial abrasion and hypnotic groove, sonically the band have begun to embrace their sludge-core tendencies while channelling nuanced elements of alternative metal and goth rock, offering new painstaking modes of vulnerability to drive home their despair-laden character studies. Mark our words, there isn't one single other metal/punk/alternative album in 2024 that slaps this hard while instilling such a cold feeling of visceral dread and fear for our ever-despondent cool world.

Featuring songs that blend pop, r&b and dance beats, the album showcases the talents of the Cheetah Girls themselves aka Adrienne Bailon, Sabrina Bryan and Kiely Williams as they take on new challenges in Barcelona. Highlights include the upbeat 'Strut' the empowering 'Cheetah-licious Christmas' and the catchy 'The Party's Just Begun'" The soundtrack perfectly mirrors the film's themes of friendship, self-expression and following dreams as well as being full of infectious tunes.

This album was a follow-up to Complete Communion and blends the same famously passionate improvisation with subtlety and shows Cherry's exceptional ability to balance intensity and restraint. It is rather frenzied but also well-controlled and is maybe Cherry's most gratifying work for Blue Note.

Review: A previously unreleased recording of the sensational and controversial Turkish theatre play by James Baldwin and Engin Cezzar, Istanbul 1970, is set to make waves. This recording has been licensed by Gokhan Akcura, who was entrusted with the master tape by Engin Cezzar, captures the intensity of a play that was banned by Istanbul authorities in 1970, despite being seen by 30,000 people in just 60 days. The audio has been meticulously restored from the original tape, and comes accompanied by liner notes from Zeynep Oral, Gokhan Akcura, Okay Temiz, and Erinc Guzel (Caz Plak Istanbul). This release brings to light Baldwin's groundbreaking play about gay relationships in a 1970s Istanbul prison. Jazz legend Don Cherry contributed music to the project, enhancing the play's dramatic tension. This lost free jazz gem, part of Caz Plak's Turkish Jazz Trilogy, is finally brought to a wider audience, thanks to this pressing.

Review: The Chicago Gangsters, a family-led group originally from Akron, Ohio, span multiple genres from gritty funk to smooth soul. Despite that name, their work largely embodied a mixture of raw disco grooves and emotive ballads. Their 1976 sophomore release, which includes a memorable rendition of Eugene McDaniel's 'Feel Like Making Love' and the title track 'Gangster Love,' stands as a key part of their legacy. This track, notably their first 12" single, hints at their influence in shaping the disco funk sound of the era. While they recorded under the Gold Plate label, they later transitioned to RCA and Heat, producing tracks that resonated across the decades, most famously sampled in LL Cool J's 'Mama Said Knock You Out.' Their energetic performances and varied discography left a lasting imprint on both the funk and early hip-hop scenes.

Review: Childish Gambino's return last year with this album was a bold one showcasing his signature eclecticism and willingness to experiment. The album opens with suspense and builds anticipation before diving into dense vocals and rich rhythms. While the intensity can be overwhelming at times, it's clear Gambino is exploring new sonic landscapes, and thankfully the likes of 'Steps Beach' offer a refreshing moment of calm with Gambino's angelic voice shining through. Featuring artists like Chloe and Jorja Smith, the collaborations add an interesting dynamic that expands the album's depth. The LP concludes on an open-ended note and make this an ambitious and intriguing release.

Review: A refined reimagining of his 2020 album 3.15.20, Childish Gambino's evolution both musically and personally has come full circle. Originally released during the early pandemic, 3.15.20 was a raw, unfinished work, but Atavista polishes its predecessor, adding clarity and finality to Gambino's bold vision. The album retains its experimental nature, ranging from vintage soul to dark, electronic soundscapes, with tracks like 'Psilocybae' (formerly '12.38') and 'To Be Hunted' now more defined and impactful. The refined vocals and instrumentals elevate the emotional depth, while the stripped-down tracklist favors the fresher sounds like the title track and 'Human Sacrifice'. While the album doesn't stray far from its predecessor, the tweaks are significant. Gambino's collaborations with Ariana Grande, 21 Savage, and Summer Walker shine and tracks such as 'Time' and 'Final Church' demonstrate his ability to blend sweet melodies with dark, experimental energy. A powerful prelude to what could be his final album, coming next.

Review: The world lost one of the all-time great indie songwriters when The Chills leader Martin Phillipps passed away in 2024. The New Zealand jangle-pop pioneers started out in the 80s, writing memorable melodies and beautiful harmonies and went on to have a career lasting more than 40 years. They helped coin the 'Dunedin sound' - a catch-all name given to the indie scene in the university city of Dunedin in the remote east coast of the South Island of New Zealand - a place that punched way above its weight in terms of cultural relevance and great indie music for its size. This release comes as a reminder of their greatness and includes a whopping 20 songs (it's a double LP and on gold(!)) from the band's early years revisited. As is often the case with tireless creatives, there's a vault of unfinished work that often never gets completed. Philipps dedicated moments at the end part of his life to fleshing out these song ideas, resulting in their completion nearly 40 years after they were written. 'If This World Was Made For Me' is the first song to be unearthed from this collection and is as beautiful as indie psychedelia gets with Philipps' vocal harmonies transcendent in their splendour.

Their self-titled debut is packed full of squelchy synths, jagged minimalist guitar lines and high-pitched eccentric vocals, paying clear homage to classic acts such as The Slits and Bow Wow Wow. Chock full of bite-sized bangers including 'Neighbourhood Dog' and 'Kiss Her Or Be Her', both of which scoff at the notion of a three-minute track, this is retrofitted throwback dance-punk in the stylised era before it even had such a moniker.

The set moves between frenzied burners like 'Levitate' and serene pieces like 'Sonder.' With surprise guests like BAELY and Regis Molina, NRG 4 is a genre-defying celebration of live collaboration and musical intuition that's electric, ephemeral and deeply alive.

This collection captures two iconic sessions for the John peel show recorded during the early 1980s, showcasing a beloved band at their creative peak. Remastered for a fresh listen, the album highlights their ability to craft memorable melodies and intricate synth-driven soundscapes. The funky, melodic opener boasts a strong chorus and infectious groove, setting the tone for an engaging journey through soulful pop. An upbeat, feel-good gem in 'Some People I Know To Lead Fantastic Lives ' follows, blending frenetic rhythms with shimmering synth textures that radiate warmth and optimism. An important hit for the band, 'Wishful Thinking' demonstrates clever songwriting and a catchy structure that's impossible to resist, solidifying its place as a synth pop classic. The collection also includes a stunning downtempo track with 'Watching The Rainclouds' , rich with soulfulness and unique instrumentation, showing the band's range and ability to evoke deep emotion through delicate melodies and expressive keyboard work. Recorded in 2020 during the pandemic, this hauntingly intricate project bridges personal pain and societal critique with dark, vivid storytelling. The opener, 'Words in the Color of Deat, sets a morbid tone, as Chino - who passed in July 2024 - reflects on life beyond the grave. Tracks like 'Sermon in Crimson' and 'Sepia Files from the Last Supper' blend symphonic and boom bap elements, showcasing his ability to interweave humour, existential dread and sharp punchlines. 'The Red You Deserve', produced by Body Bag Ben, dives into his unmatched lyrical prowess, while 'Byzantium Darkness' and 'Blue Obsidian' examine inner struggles and resilience. Features from Eto and Sauce Money elevate the album's intensity, complementing Chino's visceral delivery. Despite estate conflicts, the album's release affirms Chino's dedication to his craft, giving fans a poignant glimpse into his genius and legacy.

Review: The third LP in the Chypho series from Jahbulon Records, Episodes in Oceanography, features striking cover art that helps make it another collector's gem. Chypho hails from Huntsville, Alabama and the music here does what it says not he tine - profiles an underwater world in painterly and immersive ambient tones. There are plenty of microscopic details that drift by, shimmering sun rays that piece the surface and implied rhythms that sway to and fro like the shifting sands of the ocean floor. It's a real soother for the soul but a great bit of nourishment for the mind.

Review: Chypho is on a roll with this super trio of albums on Jahbulon Records. The second album in the Episodes in Oceanography series, is another must-cop for ambient lovers and it is enhanced by striking cover art and great mastering. Hailing from Huntsville, Alabama, Chypho's music vividly explores an underwater world through immersive ambient tones and this edition captures subtle, microscopic details in deft melodies, with bright keys breaking the surface and supple rhythms swaying like ocean currents. It's a soothing journey for the soul, offering both relaxation and nourishment for the mind, and is a tranquil, yet thought-provoking place to get lost. Very nice indeed.

Review: Andrea Cichecki - a German DJ, music producer and audio engineer based in Dresden - presents her debut LP for Castles In Space, building on an intense reflection on her past. Having been brought up on the precipice of countryside and woodland, Cichecki is a lifelong adherent to what she called the "edge effect", thriving on the boundaries of things both metaphorical and actual, rather than sticking within them. Bringing macro-cosmic scale to Moogish synthesis, each track weaves a personal story of an implicit, instrumental nature, unalloyed by words, and incorporates field recordings from the Ore Mountains and the wild, valleyed landscape of Saxon, Switzerland.

Rooted in modern classical, it blends ambient, jazz and global orchestration with piano-led compositions intertwined with synths, Afrobeat drums, East Asian zithers and Ethio-jazz keys. This global sound is effortlessly fused and inspired by film scores that evoke Fellini's moody cinematic excellence. Despite its complexity, the music feels light and playful here and is driven by improvisation. Cinema Royal thrives on deep creative flow and is enriched by contributions from close collaborators.

It was recorded in just one inspired April weekend with Cisi leading a stellar quartet of Dado Moroni on piano, Nicolas Thys on bass and Jorge Rossy on drums. The full emotional range of the genre is on show here with swing, blues and spiritual depth rising up through the tracks which range from reimagined standards to soulful originals like 'Pharoah's Message'. Throughout, the album honours jazz greats such as Coltrane and Lee Morgan with Cesare Mecca guesting on trumpet and it all adds up to heartfelt performances rich in discovery and style.

Review: Civilistjavel! returns with a seven-track exploration of melancholic soundscapes, further developing the sonic territory charted in Brodfoda. Tomas Boden's work, released on FELT, continues to weave together beauty and dread, employing a deliberately slow tempo that conjures a sense of isolated, arctic air. This LP builds organically upon the foundations of Brodfoda. 'XIII''s unsettling hum transitions smoothly into the dusky textures of 'XIV'. The dewy ambience of 'XV' precedes the hypnotic, shadowy dub of 'XVI'. 'XVII''s windswept, acid-tinged interlude then segues into the introspective drones of 'XVIII'. The collection concludes with 'XIX', where Thomas Bush's crooning vocals offer a hint of dawn, intertwining with organs, guitars and subtle sound design. A powerful emotional impact through minimalist means, skilled storytelling at its best.

Review: A reissue of a 1995 release from Texas songwriting great Guy Clark, this one gets a new mix from original co-producer Miles Wilkinson, restoring warmth and space to ten gorgeously plainspoken tracks. Clark's delivery is unhurried and unadorned, leaning on lived-in detail and dry wit, whether on the fiddle-laced resolve of 'Stuff That Works', the aching 'The Randall Knife', or the breezy storytelling of 'Baby Took A Limo To Memphis'. Cameos from Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Emmylou Harris and Darrell Scott add gentle texture, while the arrangements remain spare and acoustic-led, grounded in Clark's dry baritone and fingerpicked guitar. A quietly luminous return to one of Americana's most humane voices.

Review: Kelly Clarkson's latest and eighth studio album Meaning Of Life is a powerful statement for the longtime Nietzschean pop singer, being one of her first to be explicitly influenced by American soul and r&b. Aiming to bring back the vivacity of certain vocal greats like Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin - memories of whom are now crystallized into the American subconscious as intractable parts of the nation's history - Clarkson aims to summon a rejuvenated spirit for an otherwise divided, turbulent, bitter country.

Review: After recording sessions for their legendary fifth LP Combat Rock would come to a close at the end of 1981, punk heroes The Clash embarked on a six-week jaunt across Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Thailand (where they shot the iconic cover for their forthcoming record) and Hong Kong. Hitting the city of Kowloon on 25th February only a few months out from record release, this was an era when Hong Kong was still a colony of the British Empire (the last existing dependency of any significance at this time) and enjoyed less government interference in personal freedom, yet there had never been an act as bold as The Clash over to visit. With a setlist that reads today more like a greatest hits including the signature opener 'London Calling' along with bangers galore from 'The Guns Of Brixton' to 'I Fought The Law', '(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais' and 'Jimmy Jazz', with the band even treating the crowd to an early earful of Combat Rock lead single 'Know Your Rights' more than two months before official release (a time when no one had smart phones to film and throw up on YouTube or include on Setlist.fm as "New Song"), this performance and tour would also be one of the final to feature drummer Topper Headon, who would be fired due to his heroin addiction just a few months down the line, marking the end of the original line-up.

Review: Following the end of recording sessions for what would become their iconic fifth full-length Combat Rock in December 1981, punk legends The Clash would embark on a six-week tour of Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand (where they would shoot the cover for the upcoming album) and Hong Kong. Captured in Kowloon on the 25th February three months before record release, and during a time where the city enjoyed less stringent government oversight, there had still never been an act as rambunctious and declarative as The Clash to hold court. Delivering a set that now reads like a greatest hits from the obligatory opener of 'London Calling' to bangers such as 'Tommy Gun', 'The Guns Of Brixton', 'I Fought The Law' and 'Jimmy Jazz', while even unveiling Combat Rock lead single 'Know Your Rights' two months before studio release, the performance and subsequent tour is also noteworthy for being one of the last with the original line-up, as drummer Topper Headon would be fired due to his heroin addiction only a couple of months later.

Taking the stage at the Nakano Sunplaza in Tokyo on the 1st February, Joe Strummer and co would rip through a setlist that reads today more like a greatest hits collection including the signature opener 'London Calling' along with an array of quintessential bangers such as '(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais', 'This Is Radio Clash', 'Tommy Gun' and 'Jimmy Jazz', while the band would be joined by bassist Paul Simonon's wife Pearl Harbor (aka Pearl E. Review: Dutch-born American jazz pianist and composer Gerald Clayton is back with a sixth album, his second on Blue Note. Ones & Twos is another exploration of jazz, hip-hop, neo-soul and raw improvisation that is all rooted in a deep conceptual framework. Featuring standout collaborators like Joel Ross, Elena Pinderhughes, Kendrick Scott and Kassa Overall, the album moves effortlessly from groove to abstraction and is inspired by turntablism, which is why Clayton created two sets of tracks that can play individually or simultaneously, blurring the line between harmony and dissonance. As rich as the sonics are, there is also real philosophical intent here, making it both a visceral and cerebral listen with layered commentary on collaboration, coexistence and creativity.

Review: The Clean are one of the most important indie bands to ever come out of New Zealand. Their EP 'Boodle Boodle Boodle' (1981), recorded on a four-track, had an instant lo-fi appeal and became the Flying Nun label's first major success. They were shaped by the likes of Syd Barrett, Velvet Underground and The Stooges and have gone on to influence the likes of Pavement and Yo La Tengo. The band were on hiatus for the majority of the 80s, but came back to release three albums in the 90s and two in the 00s. This is their second album and the first time this title has been in print on vinyl since its initial release. With more budget to record than when they were cutting their teeth in the early 80s, it's a higher fi record and of their post-reunion releases, this is the closest in feel to their early material. 'Linger Longer' is a haunting piano-led cut full of poignance and psychedelic feel. 'Secret Place' shines a spotlight on The Clean's iconic stripped back drum style and 'Something I Need' has a Lou Reed and Mick Jagger feel to the vocals as folk-y acoustic instrumentation prevails beautifully underneath. A staggering band.

Review: Clemo's seventh studio release is an emotionally charged journey through a father's response to his daughter's serious illness. The album blends spiritual minimalism, electronica and jazz fusion to create haunting soundscapes that explore the depths of fear, darkness and disorientation, while also capturing the eventual joy of recovery. The compositions, such as the intense 'Stalker' and 'Maze', give way to the serene 'Rest' and celebratory 'Dawn', offering listeners a visceral experience. Clemo's work is characterised by intricate textures, where drones, brass, woodwind, strings, guitar and piano combine with hypnotic rhythms to evoke deep emotion. Collaborating with musicians like Arve Henriksen (trumpet), Theo Travis (saxophone & flutes), and Emily Burridge (cello), Clemo employs a unique process of 'blind' improvisation and meticulous editing. The result is a rich, multifaceted album that crosses genres, blending experimental rock, Krautrock and jazz fusion. With his visionary approach to sound design, Clemo has cemented his reputation as a pioneering figure in contemporary music. His past work, such as his Dream Maps multimedia project and collaborations exploring music's healing power, continues to disrupt familiar boundaries, offering fresh perspectives on the intersection of sound, emotion, and environment.

Review: Chicago rock band Wilco's guitarist - a highly prolific jazz maestro in his own right - brings us his latest full length album. A hypnotic groove anchors the lead single, propelling a hard-driving yet fluid interplay between guitar and saxophone. The composition brims with urgency, each phrase unfolding with elegant harmonic tension and a deep jazz sensibility. The quartet's chemistry is undeniable, balancing structured intensity with moments of free-flowing improvisation. Echoes of classic Blue Note recordings by Andrew Hill and Eric Dolphy surface in the phrasing, while the interplay recalls the front-line dynamism of Joe Lovano and John Scofield's collaborations. Yet, the sound remains singular, shaped by a deep appreciation for Brooklyn's improvised music scene. Across the album, the group explores a vast emotional and textural rangeiat times bracing and kinetic, elsewhere delicate and atmospheric. The rhythm section locks into compelling grooves, allowing melodies to breathe and evolve organically. The guitarist's mastery is evident, seamlessly shifting from shimmering chord voicings to fiery, exploratory runs. This is a love letter to both jazz tradition and the limitless potential of improvisation, where every note serves the collective momentum.

Review: Imagine a world where the pioneers of hip-hop and electro reign supreme, their sounds echoing through the neon-lit streets of a futuristic metropolis. This is the world that Clipping creates, their music a heady blend of gritty beats, razor-sharp rhymes and dystopian soundscapes. 'Dominator' and 'Change the Channel' set the tone with their raw energy and infectious hooks, while 'Run It' and 'Go' showcase the group's lyrical dexterity and knack for crafting intricate rhymes that weave tales of technology, alienation and social unrest. Collaborations with Aesop Rock, Nels Cline and Cartel Madras add further depth and dimension to the album's sonic tapestry, each artist bringing their unique flavour to the mix. Tracks like 'Simple Degradation' and 'Mood Organ' delve into the darker corners of this dystopian world, exploring the anxieties and uncertainties of a future dominated by technology. It's not for the faint of heart, but it is a thrilling ride through a world of futuristic sounds and thought-provoking lyrics.

Review: Even if you're a big fan of shoegaze jangle indie fuzziness, with waves of beach rock, Club 8's latest might have passed by unnoticed when it landed in December 2024. That's no slight on you. Or them. The reality is, this duo - known to some as Karolina Komstedt and Johan Angergard - are about as restless as they come. Trying to summarise the sound of their back catalogue is impressively challenging, with preceding records touching on Afro-pop, electronica, synth rock and trip hop. A Year With Club 8 is both a departure from those previous chapters, and a firm recommitment to the chameleon-like aesthetic. What's so remarkable, though, is their seemingly unending ability to keep hitting the nail squarely on head with each sound they choose to play with next. For all intents and purposes, this might be the best intimate-yet-epic rock & roll album of last year.

Review: Talk about universe building - Coheeed & Cambria have written their own science fiction odyssey, realised it visually, and then used this as inspiration for their music. Creative self-indulgence or self-dependence, either way it's made for a compelling back catalogue of prog-leaning post-hardcore and emo-infused heavy rock bordering on metal. The Father of Make Believe is the latest episode this epic journey. And it's fully fledged Coheed & Cambria - so instantly gratifying there's a case for this as rock-pop, the slow jam 'Corner of My Confidence' perhaps taking that idea to the furthest point, although even the main stage juggernauts like 'Someone Who Can' seem to be equal parts geek-out six string solo and polished to perfection. In other hands, this might feel plastic, but the skill with which they pull their sound off is nothing but authentic.

Review: Mr Bongo look back to the damn fine Latin funk and rock-infused soul sounds of Coke's 197 self-titled opus for their next well-chosen reissue project here. It is their only album, sadly, but is a brilliant mix of Miami Latin-funk, psychedelic garage rock and gritty soul sung mainly in English. It blends bright funk drumming, flavourful organs and zesty horn with Paul Garcia (guitar), Ariel Hernandez (bass), Ruben Perez (drums), Jose Rubio (keys) and Peter Fernandez (vocals) all produced by Mato. The record was popular in Miami but faded due to limited promotion and a Coca-Cola trademark dispute but was later rediscovered by collectors, with standout tracks like 'Na Na,' 'Got to Touch Your Face' and 'Te Amo Mas' all became staples of Latin sets.

Review: This is Coldplay’s tenth studio album and delivers in being an album that can help lift you when you’re feeling down in the dumps. Chris Martin and band have tapped into something that helps listeners transcend and feel connected on a higher level. There’s an array of top-tier collaborators involved, including the mighty Jon Hopkins and Louis Cole, so it goes on a spectacular journey sonically. ‘We Pray’ (featuring Little Simz and Burna Boy among others) taps into Afrobeats and is one of the most cutting-edge major pop singles. And 'AETERNA’ lifts its backbeat from Brainfeeder signee Louis Cole’s ‘Weird Part Of The Night’, which is a great touch and indicative of an expertly A&R’d album that lifts up so many great contemporary musicians.

Review: Coldplay's debut album, Parachutes, receives a well-deserved reissue on vinyl, marking its enduring significance in the band's discography and modern rock history. Originally released in 2000, this album propelled Coldplay to international acclaim with its introspective lyrics, melodic guitar lines, and Chris Martin's emotive vocals. The vinyl reissue maintains the album's original warmth and intimacy while enhancing the listening experience with the format's rich sound quality. Tracks like 'Yellow,' 'Trouble,' and 'Shiver' were instrumental in showing Coldplay's ability to blend alternative rock with heartfelt songwriting, capturing themes of love, longing, and self-discovery. The album's timeless appeal lies in its ability to evoke both nostalgia and contemporary relevance, appealing to longtime fans rediscovering its magic and new listeners with its raw emotional depth. Review: Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head back in 2002 was a move on from their debut that showed deeper emotional and sonic complexity. With Chris Martin's distinctive voice at the helm, the album features anthems like 'Clocks' and 'The Scientist' which blend atmospheric rock with introspective lyrics. Tracks such as 'God Put a Smile Upon Your Face' and 'In My Place' highlight the band's ability to fuse melodic hooks with poignant themes and the album's exploration of love, loss and introspection, supported as always by grand and dynamic arrangements and epic production, remains a standout in the band's catalogue.

Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe returned here to bring the unique sounds that made Volume I a Latin music classic. For this one, Colon and Lavoe were joined by renowned cuatro player Yomo Toro and legendary percussionists Milton Cardona and Jose Mangual Jr. Together, they crafted salsa versions of beloved Puerto Rican Christmas songs while mixing traditional musica jibara with Cuban guaguanco, son montuno and African-American jazz. It delivers on all fronts with vibrant, festive blends that bring real Puerto Rican authenticity to salsa fans worldwide.
