Review: It's been a while since we heard from R&S Records, so we're more than chuffed at news of this latest EP, which this time hears them extend their prolific, ravenous taste for new music ever-further, into what could be described as halftime drum & bass. This time the productions come courtesy of British producer Quartz, and perhaps a name like 'Deity Spear' tells you all you need to know; this is an angelic, synaptic, rapturous EP. Megadeep subs underlie snappy, endlessly-varied hat combos on the openers 'Lilac Cobwebs' and 'Deity Spear', which recall the contributions of Djrum or Lone to the label in recent years, with their cavernous space and extra attention to detail. 'Cosmic Horror' and 'Switchable Groove' refuse to let up on this overarching atmosphere, but lend it a new light altogether, fleshing out evermore sinister contours.

Review: Direct drumfunk from the Russian whizzkid S Kid! UK jungle imprint come forth with two unapologetic slap-abouts. 'Document' plays good cop/bad cop as the cosmic pads and arpeggios and classic vocal sample give you a warm hug while the drums come in hard with all kinds of accusations. 'Guidelines' follows with a similar strong sense of contrasts but more of an old school foundation hardcore type of feel; non-stop drummage and a universe of synth flurries overhead. Sublime.

Review: Canadian producer Sixteenarmedjack is well-known for his extremely satisfying liquid jungle explorations, with 'I'm Ready' being no exception to this well-established rule. Coming to fellow self-appointed breaks scholars Amenology, the four tracks on this EP are as functional as they are rambunctious, spanning multiple moods and eras. 'Skin Out' in particular has a sort of early jump-up vibe, with a Demons-Thematic smattering of sound effects peppered with an overarching blue-noted jazz texture.

Complementing his rapid fire chats with equally thundering amens, it's got reload written into every red groove. Flip for more smoky sonic sermons as they take on another spark-up standard "Herbalist" with such authenticity you could easily be convinced it's 1992 again... Review: The quality d&b landing on Okbron just doesn't let up, as the prolific label turns its attention to Gen & Ryde, a new collaborative project between Mark Wilson and Ryan Miles. Mark Wilson is mostly associated with early Fokuz Recordings output from around 20 years ago, while Miles was dropping heat on Good Looking sister label Looking Good around the same time. If you love silken atmospheric d&b with a jazzy tint, you'll be more than satisfied by these immaculate conceptions, from the hazy funk of 'Low Frequency Satellite' to the smoky mood of 'Tian Fire'.

Review: Undercurrent is an artist based in LA and a New Palm resident who shows his studio skills across a trio of new cuts here. 'Beliefs' is a loopy breakbeat roller with jittery rhythms that lock you into their loops and keep you there. 'No Data' is similar but more punchy, with real edge and drive in the breaks while fat bass stabs power things along from below. The same track then gets a remix from Charlie Edward that is more spaced out with searching synths and a more rubbery bassline. Last of all is a floating ambient cut that eventually has a jungle breakbeat rise up through the mix to take you into the next dimension.

Review: Drum & bass liquidator and Spearhead Records founder BCee returns for a Fokuzed, four-track liquid slab of sloshers. Wildly punchy and watery, as if attending a fantastical rave in a magical-natural mineral water spring, BCee amps up the sound design and depth here, with basses and impacts on the likes of 'Water Hole' and 'Rain' playing up the more eternal-live-giving capabilities of drum & bass. Review: Audio Soul Project returns with fresh vinyl here in the form of their Simurgh EP, which is named after a mythical Persian bird. Across the tunes you'll find a fusion of dub, d&B, house and even r&b to make for an alluring sonic trip. Opener 'Deliver Me' brings the warmth and soul with balmy chords over raw, woody drums with a big diva vocal up top. Things are paired back for 'Azizam Dub' which has a subsonic bass line bump and synth stabs bringing the energy. 'Internal Vybrations' is d&b powered by monstrous bass with hi-hats, shakers and maracas detailing the rhythm, and last of all 'Celebration Dub' brings a funky and summery house vibe perfect for outdoor dancing. This is as varied an EP as you'll hear this season.

Review: Jungle revivalists Coco Bryce and Tommy The Cat are old pals who've released numerous joint EPs over the years. Here they inaugurate a new series of split twelves - snappily titled 'CocoCat' - on Tommy The Cat's own Cat in the Bag label. Bryce handles side A, delivering the nostalgic jungle-techno thrills of 'You Care Before They Do'. It's a pleasingly energetic affair in which bleep techno style melodic motifs - think LFO, Sweet Exorcist etc - and shimmering futurist chords rise above a sweat-soaked jungle break and weighty bass. Over on the flip, Tommy The Cat doffs a cap to the early days of deep, jazzy d&b, successfully cloaking a punchy, Amen-driven beat and heady bassline in the dreamiest of chords.

Review: Wots My Code has been back on our shelves recently with some of his most seminal EPs getting reissued. His self-titled effort from 1992 came back in October, as did his All Seasons EP also on Kiteforce, both of which sounded as good as they did back when first crafted. Now his The New Dubplates EP drops on Just Another Label with 'Dubplate' kicking off as a remix by Bay B Kane that takes no prisoners. A Sikka remix then tweaks the energy level and on the flip is 'Pass Me A Dubplate (92-3)' a short but sweet closer.

Review: In the words of Lisa Stansfield, some of us live for the future and some of us wonder. Others, meanwhile, just love to bash out the rave bangers. Others like DJ Kos and his pals Billy Daniel Bunter, Sanxion, Karma Krew and Dubious. All of them delivering premium euphoric goods on this limited coloured vinyl. Following Bunter and Sanxion's hair-raising remix and Kos's timeless original come two more weapons. The mysterious Karma Krew go for the feels with sweeping pads and skippy beats on 'Cracking Up' while Dubious's 'Heartbreak' takes another classic vocal sample and hurls it several decades into the future. Review: Roffa than ruff! Netherlands craftsman Mike Redman (AKA Deformer) unites local MCs Bigman Scep, Swift and Dart for this big singalong skank-out. Tailored for festivals, it pays homage to the roots with big party energy. Meanwhile on the remix front we're bombarded with an all-star cast as UK OGs Bizzy B and Ed Rush both get stuck in alongside Mike under his Deformer alias. Bizzy is all about the modern rave twist while Ed Rush gets an old Bad Company style and Deformer goes all-out breakcore. Elsewhere on this double 12" opus we see Mackadena get the breaks on, Rotterdam Terror Corps go full hardcore and Akira teasing us with a little twist of gabber. High grade Dutch business.

Review: Those with their ear to the drum & bass underground will know that Hugh Hardie has been dropping slick tunes on Hospital Records for many years. The Cambridge-raised producer made a move to Solvent Records recently though and now is back with his third album, Jukebox. It is his best yet with early singles 'Blush' featuring Zara Kershaw and 'Face Off' with PAV4N of Foreign Beggars already winning plenty of plaudits. He shows his widescreen sound off in all its glory here - there are soul drenched rollers, lush vocal tunes and collaborations with the likes of Footsie, Degs, Killa P and more.

The clue is in the name, as the shadowy crew behind the imprint continue to explore explicit crossovers between roots and dub with modern breakbeat science. 'Observer' marries deep, swimming echo chamber skank with a crisp, rolling rhythm, while 'Love Is The Key' has a brighter, bouncier demeanour helped no end by the infectious bump of the b-line and the mellow piano chops.

Review: Did you know that Iceland had its own rather influential rave scene back in the 1990s? Whatever the answer to that question, you will want to check out this first-ever collection of anthems from that era which is now on vinyl for the first time. This collection came on Thule offshoot label TMT Entertainment as a CD in 1992 and features memorable and timeless tracks from back then, many of them now with cult status. It's called Alsaela, which translates as "ecstasy" and gives you some idea of what to expect from it. It features a non-stop selection of old school rave alongside some lost and previously unavailable classics by Agzilla & DJ L.S.K and some unreleased gems from AJAX. A great bit of history that still does the trick.
