Aphrodite & Amazon EP

King Of The Beats (6:46)
Music's Hypnotising (6:30)
Dub Moods (5:45)
Spice (Of The Gods remix) (5:48)
Review: Heads will know Aphrodite is the no-effs-given 90s drum & bass artist of choice, with the producer's music inevitably occupying any curious digger's wantlist. Aphrodite knows you want it, which is why they're on a massive reissue campaign. Cashing in and all that - they can't resist. 'King Of The Beats' throws back to the dawn of amen break-cutting with a sampled reference to Mantronix, while 'Music's Hypnotising' blends an unusual arpeggiation with techstep motifs and a popular stock vocal sample. 'Dub Moods' and 'Spice' strip things back further, conveying ever-increasing Ridley-Scott-film-set moods.

Review: 1985 Music take their Various Artists' collections very seriously and Atlas 2 is their latest top-drawer offering. Across no fewer than six sides of vinyl - served up in an embossed sleeve - the label platforms a wide range of artists, some of them red hot newcomers, some of the deserving and still relevant veterans as well as plenty in between. From the alluring darkness of Alix Perez & Ebb's minimal 'Shallow Affect' to Trail's haunting 'Velasquez' and Scout's ice-cold 'Meltdown' then is s superb cross-section of the best in stylish and heady drum & bass.

Skybound (5:57)
Theta Phase (6:01)
Leave Us Lucid (5:49)
Review: Russian jungle pioneer Dissident makes his debut on Vivid with four intergalactic tear-ups of the highest order. 'Recover From Solvation' brings the classic Krome & Time vibes - deep space breaks, booming subs and trippy textures. 'Skybound' brings that bounce and those warm feels while 'Theta Phase' takes us deep, deep deep into hyperspace by way of a far away daydream. Last but not least 'Leave Us Lucid' closes on a J Majik style stepper spring. What an EP. If this is the sound of Dissident not quite waking up yet, he needs to stay in bed more often.

Turbo Breaks EP (limited heavyweight vinyl 12")

Temple Of Boom (5:16)
Out Of Control (4:22)
Turbo Breaks (4:50)
Equatorial Bass (remix) (4:57)
Review: Turbo Breaks by name, Turbo Breaks by nature. Diplomat and Beagle are reunited on this powerful new offering with some new tunes and an update of one of their old classics. 'Temple Of Boom' kicks off with fixing, brain-frying synths over relentless drum precision. It's a naggy track to shake up the floor. 'Out Of Control' is another fierce and fast-paced new school workout while the title track mixes up meticulous drum programming with funky brass, slamming bass and melodic patterns that bring the rave. The remix of 'Equatorial Bass' is a mix of floating breakdowns and revved-up drum & bass madness.

Kind Of Sort Of Not Really (5:43)
Nots (5:21)
Pox (4:15)
Review: You can always rely on Analogical Force to come through with the heavyweight goods and dgoHn's Portus EP is just that. This deft four-tracker is a study in the mix of light and dark, heavy and airy. 'Enclosed' manages to float on suspensory synths while the busy drums flap below next to splashy hits. 'Kind Of Sort Of Not Really' pairs pensive, inwardly reflective synths with busier drum workouts and 'Nots' heads into jungle territory but with bass so nimble you can't sit still. Closer 'Pox' might be the best of the lot with its moody bass and chords and kinetic, pinging drums.

Track 1 (6:30)
Track 2 (5:07)
Review: German techno DJ and producer Rene Pawlowitz has kept up their experimental Hoover series going for a solid three years now. A fascinating take on jungle from the frame of reference that is techno, it serves as a pretty perfect example of one genre being 'looked in on' by another. The fifth instalment in the series here sees a further two tunes added to the pot; 'Track 1' reminds us of the scratchy and dry wonk of John T Gast, while 'Track 2' dizzys us with rather mind-boggling breaks cut-ups and restructurings.

Review: Snapping necks, frying minds, taking names - Thuggy Widdz is on an absolute roll this year thanks to his recent album on Western Lore, his release on Hooversound and now this massive four piece on the burgeoning Badlands imprint. You should know the vibe by now; brazen breakbeat choppage and high energy rave flavours across the spectrum. Highlights here include the walloping emotion of 'Whale Song' and pure venom of 'Archetypical'. Savage.

Earshots (extended mix) (4:32)
Review: Sir Hiss and 4AM Kru set up a dialogue between London and Bristol, a stellar dialectic giving rise to a supreme form of lo-fi jungle. 'Earshots' samples a bhangra vocal cry, mixing it up with the scratchy factory movements of cut-throat jungular breaks. It marks a break from Sir Hiss' usual grime parlance, and adds to a refreshingly-named new series handled by their parent label Embrace The Real, called 'No More Mailouts', an explicit callout of PR in the electronic music industry which aims to lead by example. Power to em.

Slow Fall (6:21)
Eliminate (6:49)
Review: Moscow's Okbron Records are back with a new set of digital halftime bangers by the usually more upbeat drum & bass veteran Bungle. 'Slow Fall' and 'Eliminate' are chillout moods for nightwalks, best listened to when walking down the street at dusk or at 3AM, with earphones in. Off-kilter rhythms and strange liminal zones are evoked on this new white label 12", like cityscapes buckling under the stress of internal conflict.

Review: Sister Candy's lost gem 'Keep Bubbling' has been dug out from some forgotten vault lost in time, and we're here fort. The killer jam was originally released 1984 on Raiders Records. It's that one which has been remastered here under special licence from Sir Lloyd and Sister Candy. It's got the flabbiest of bass ends you can imagine with great ragga vocals up top. The version is a real head twisting, filter heavy workout and the a DJ Sports remix brings a mad jungle breakbeat to blow your speakers apart and end the EP in style.

Minority Industrial Complex (6:10)
Review: Outer Heaven explores a range of tumbling tempos on this exploratory new EP for UVB-76 Music. 'The Observatory' has a grand scale - the drums ping about a wide stereo field, the fizzing synths, groaning vocals and scattered hits all cover a large area with you locked in the midst. 'More Hardcore' is a jungle cut that takes flight on dusty metal drum breaks as vocal apparitions and sci-fi effects dart about above. Closer 'Minority Industrial Complex' is a heavy and industrial dub with great height in the drums and a hint of dystopia never far away.

A Stantz - "Vags Ande" (6:25)
Cracktros - "Deosil" (6:45)
Review: Dead Dreams Don't Die Vol 1 is the first release from the new label Half Grand Records, which we're told will be focused on no-frills, raw talent electronic music. And so it proves on this split EP which brings together a diverse bunch of names. Nimam kick off with the jungliest breaks and fizzing future energy of 'Cilinger Slobs' before Jon Doppler mangels synth modulations and more airy breakbeats on his 'Feel Like.' On the flip, A Stantz brings the darkness with raw, frazzled electro stylings on 'Vags Ande' and Cracktros closes out with 'Deosil' which is a deeper techno cut with star-gazing synth leads.

Review: Brand new Italian label Reflue launches with a remarkable five-track odyssey from co-owner Viola. A heady analog portrait of inner city intensity that ranges from electro to drum & bass - and blurring every possibly boundary in between - Viola's 'Sunburnt' takes us from the most visceral, physical body music ('Il Tek') to the most abstract, far-out head-tickling snapshots ('Yard II') with equal levels of style and sleaze, grittiness and prettiness. A bold opening statement.

Review: All aboard! Original jungle OG Marvellous Cain rifles through his archives with the team at seminal rave imprint Suburban Base to dig out some old classics and upfront gems. It kicks off here with 'Love Train', one of Cain's most soulful and disco influenced cuts which is perfectly remix-matched with Marky who adds his own Sao Paulo magic to the groove. Elsewhere 'Buss Ah Blank' gets all jumpy and aggy while 'Funky To Night' takes the most classic of classic samples and gives it a brand new twist. Roll on Saturday...

Review: Visages are a four-strong crew out of Toulouse who fly the flag for a true-school, soundsystem approach to club music. Their drops to date have spanned labels like Flexor Audio, Impact Music and Dispatch Recordings, but since 2020 they've been building something formidable with Alix Perez's 1985 Music label. Now this build up culminates in the knockout From Lead To Gold, a masterful long player of hard-hitting steppers and snaking d&b workouts which will have seasoned heads and new listeners alike getting giddy. Perez himself lends a hand on 'Black Katana' but really the achievement is all in the hands of these four talented up and comers.

'Reprizal' is a savage piece of breakbeat work that sits somewhere between Repertoire and Samurai in its sound, weight and pure moodiness. Review: German scientist Current Value elevates his 14th studio album to wax status and the world is a better place. Rolling out over two heavyweight 12"s, this particular body of work explores the relationship between drum & bass and techno in a whole rainbow of interesting and uncompromising ways. From the pummelling non-stop 4x4s of 'Greed' to the glitchy, rising frequencies and twisted emotions of the title track, each cut takes a snapshot or a pinch of ingredients, inspects them on a microscopic level and turns them inside out. Elsewhere cuts like 'TNM' melt your face off with thundering beats and momentous energy while other tracks such as 'Deep Mind' go straight for the cranial sensation and fry your brain within seconds. An exceptional exploration. No one does it like Current Value.

Review: Fokuz Recordings has been one of the leading drum & bass labels in the Netherlands for some time. Now well into triple figures when it comes to catalogue numbers, the label is still turning out interesting sounds as evidenced by this new purple-marbled 12" from Spearhead bossman BCEE. There is a beauty in the way ever so delicate one-finger piano notes are draped over the relentless bass of opener 'Alpha' that soon wins you over. 'Dogs Behaving Badly' is deeper, more soulful, more tender and insular and then 'Days Like These' is a fluid roller with well-treated string sounds before 'Overleaf' layers dub vibes with jump-up drum goodness.

Why Must It Be This Way (6:00)
Review: Previously spotted linking up on Blueskin Badger for their 'Rising' EP last year, northern junglists Duburban and Jahganaut return to the scene of the crime with two more foundation fire-ups. Both nodding at that classic emotional early 90s palette of shades and emotions with wry snippets of vocals and heavy breakbeat craftsmanship, 'If You Want My Love' is all about those meat cleaver edits thundering down and narrowly missing your neck while 'Why Must It Be This Way' is more about that subtle 4x4 rolling beneath the breaks and those epic chops and switches. Show some love.

'Adams Rib', meanwhile, rains down the breaks on a biblical level while ice cold pads stir up the sinister flavours in the background. You ain't ready for these ones.

Traversing classic rave, breakbeat, minimalism and jungle, '858 ASS' is a wide-armed and deep-diving exploration... 'Azimuth Circle' is a pristine technoid roller with shimmering percussion and hypnotic momentum, 'Orissarre' is a stark slice of jungle futurism, 'Inslandsis' takes us back to the halcyon early 90s acid house era while '5AM At Circle K' hits with bassline fire and dynamic, sparse ice. An exciting mission statement for what the French platform has in store moving forward.

Review: For whatever reason. Part 3 of this EP series from Bungle on Moscow's Okbron Records dropped before this one, Part 2. Either way the drum & bass veteran has won us over again with two of his signature laidback rollers. They come with nice synth sequences and silky smooth drum breaks that manage to be powerful but comforting, certainly on 'Memory Lane' which also has the hint of nostalgia you would expect. 'Sun Step' is more stripped back, with smeared chords and more frosty textures up top and low, booming bass down low. Both are high-quality cuts.

Review: Andrea opened this sophomore album Due In Color mostly during 2020 and 2021. You may reverb that those times were slightly crazy due to the small matter of a pandemic which is what lead the artists to explore a world of more hazy and experimental jazz sounds. That in turn inspired him to use more acoustic sounds in his music and so this is a record that turns its back on dark and booming club spaces and heads instead towards blooming fields of expansive downtempo, textured ambient and dreamy soundscapes.

Typhoon (3:47)
Review: Forever flipping through the tempos and the styles, Artikal bossman and all-round legend J:Kenzo has the honour of being the launch artist on Alternate Recordings - a brand new label from longstanding Bristol party crew. Hot on the heels of his Metalheadz release, Kenzo keeps things d&b with both of these raffish, rugged cuts. 'RawZ' bashes and bumps in all the right places, aided by shimmering percussion and a sweet vocal stab placed at all the right moments. It's backed up by the sultry, sexy 'Typhoon' that flexes on a halftime groove for most of the track and features a smouldering vocal you'll instantly recognise. Stunning.

Level Up (5:41)
Big Up All (5:54)
Operation Drag N Drop (4:57)
Feed The Cat (4:18)
Review: As heard smashed on Vision Radio by Noisia on several occasions, original US junglist UFO! gets real on the beautifully named Psycho Bummer label. Four cuts of chaotic choppy-choppage and Amen splinters, this represents everything that's exciting about modern jungle right now. 'Level Up' and 'Big Up All' are all about the bashy bumps and shunts, 'Operation Drag N Drop' is a lot more nostalgic with its jazzier drums and emotional pads while 'Feed The Cat' tickles the whiskers with big drums and a mystical charm. Impeccable work, our advice is to identify this flying object as soon as you can!

Review: Our love for Coco Bryce is well-documented on these pages. To get news of a new album from the legendary Dutch drum & bass producer, then, is, well, music to our ears. Computer Love is a double pack on his own label MYOR that explores downtempo sonic landscapes, deep drum & bass and occasional forays into UKG and breakbeat. It's a kaleidoscopic listen with meticulous craft in each tune and overflowing with fresh melodic ideas as well as his famous smart samples. Previously released singles 'Night Safari' and 'Trust Issues' are standouts amongst a slew of other more left-of-centre sounds.
