Review: Based in London, UK, but originally hailing from Argentina, Malena Zavala is nothing if not disinterested in picking a style and sticking with it. Following on from her 2018 debut album, 'Aliso', 'La Yarara' again sees her combining some bold and often disparate genres, and playing with language - Spanish and English - to dazzling effect. The result being a record that's devastatingly effective and equally original. 'What If I' is a positive, upbeat and hypnotic pop lullaby. 'Compay' is saturated in a bluesy atmosphere, melding this with downtempo electronica. 'I'm Leaving Home' is a lackadaisical, whispered slice of reflective chill out. The title track is South American exoticism, canned and then opened on record. A huge talent diving deeper into sonic possibilities, and following what sounds good rather than familiar.

Waiting For The Light
Review: Past Inside The Present label head and ambient powerhouse zake and Tyresta follow up their recent and well-received The Worlds We Leave Behind with Jade, a companion album that expands on previous themes in three long-form tracks. It's a deep blending of pregnant drones and delicate details that is typically organic and analogue. 'Jade No. 1' layers analogue textures that make for a comforting, melancholic embrace, while 'Jade No. 2' features more fractured melodies and natural sounds that bring a sense of peace and calm. The third cut, 'Waiting For the Light,' is a lofty one with soft synths and orchestral gravitas that with the other two pieces make for a contemplative and reflective listen.

Stay With Me (feat Marine Eyes)
Review: Given the amounts of collaborations he undertakes, Past Inside The Present boss zake is not so much musically sociable as utterly gregarious. He's also one to choose a good theme with which to imbue his musical productions with definable atmospherics. This collaborative effort with T.R. Jordan has water at its heart, with field recordings captured on the coast of Lake Erie - which straddles the US/Canadian border - fed into the mixes, giving them a distinctive psycho-geography. Spread over four slow moving tracks, including 'Stay With Me' with ghostly vocals by the aptly named marine eyes, the arrangements revolve around the sound of traditional and electronic pianos interplaying. That said, all the meticulous detail and sonic trimmings you'd expect from a Past Inside The Present release are in there too, working away in the background.

Review: Past Inside The Present boss zake, Joachim Spieth and Markus Guentner join forces for a collaborative work that flits gracefully down the seam ambient and drone music. The vision unfolds across eight tracks, from the opener 'Elysium' and its almost hymn-like grandeur and the airy swathes of synth on 'Horizon', right through to the super sustained notes of 'Utopia' at its end. A meditational listen for sure, but one with plenty of mood peaks and troughs along the way.

Review: Two of PITP's most prolific producers - between them their releases number well into the hundreds - team up for an exquisite mix of sound design and tactile field recordings. Witness, for instance, how 'Last Letter' weaves the hustle and bustle of a Japanese train station into lush, slowly shifting synth textures, building steadily to an emotional climax. 'Far, Far Away' is another highlight, blooming into view and then shrinking away. Class experiments in ambient territory, grab this limited edition while you can, it's a proper peach.

Review: Certain Path is a serene, piano-driven album by collaborators zake (aka label head Zach Frizzell), From Overseas which is Kevin Sery and City of Dawn aka Damien Duque. This reflective collection of seven pieces invites deep contemplation with tender piano motifs and subtle drones creating a meditative atmosphere. Opening with 'Where Time Slows Down,' the album blends delicate melodies with layered guitar textures. Inspired by Frizzell's wife, the title track offers heartfelt emotion, while 'Avec l'aide de Vincent' honours a close mentor. Throughout, the artists employ nocturnal recording sessions, field recordings and analogue treatments to craft an introspective, evocative listening experience.

Review: Zake and City of Dawn are the aliases of Zach Frizzell and Damien Duque respectively, two Texan ambient explorers with plenty of sizeable lineage in the field. Frizzell in particular runs the highly regarded Past Inside The Present label, and he also has a staggering amount of recorded work to his name. The pair have worked together a lot over the past two years, and now they make the move to Danish label Azure Vista for this blissed out excursion into purest drone abandon, with all the soothing harmonic tones your restless mind could ever wish for.

Review: US ambient maestro zake and vocalist Angela Winter exchanged ideas for a whole year in the course of putting together this, this debut collaboration. It comes as a numbered CD with a download code and is, according to zake, "the perfect orchestration between two individuals at the right moment." We agree as it beautifully navigates a realm between the terrestrial and cosmic with organic drones and ethereal vocals fort and centre. The likes of 'Terminal Sleep' contrasts dynamic drones with introspective moments while 'Advent' offers harmonic pulses and sculpted vocals as Winter's instinctive responses to everyday sounds enrich the album's allure. A perfect soundtrack to quiet introspection, Mid Sky is another gem in a long line of them from this label.

Review: Earlier in the year, Yves Tumor announced the release of this album by releasing 'Gospel For a New Country', a low-slung chunk of post-punk pop brilliance that mixed weighty grooves and emotive vocals with flash-fried guitar riffs amd sampled big band horns. Fittingly, it's this fine track that kicks off 'Heaven To A Tortured Mind', a notably fuzzy, live-sounding set that continues his evolution from quirky electronica maker to alt-rock artist. While there are some electronic sounds dotted across the set, for the most part it's funk-rock riffs, ESG style basslines, organic drums and his own heartfelt vocals that dominate. It could win him many new fans; certainly, it's a very good album.

Review: Your Old Droog emerges with Movie, an introspective exploration that marks a significant evolution in his career. Cloaked in anonymity a decade ago, the Ukraine-born rapper has since carved a niche for himself in hip-hop, showcasing his sharp lyricism and distinctive style. The album's title derives from a nostalgic phrase from his childhood, symbolising moments of unexpected joy. With features from Method Man and Denzel Curry, alongside production from industry heavyweights like Madlib and Just Blaze, Movie is both engaging and emotionally resonant. Tracks like 'A Damn Shame' highlight his vulnerability, while 'Mantra' delves into his immigrant experience. Droog balances introspection with a playful edge, as seen in the catchy 'Yodi Dodi'. His storytelling shines on 'The Sandbox', addressing poignant themes of struggle. Ultimately, Movie stands as a layered masterpiece, affirming Droog's status as a thoughtful artist ready to embrace the spotlight.

Review: Neil Young's return to this 1977-recorded "lost" collection of songs feels like a snapshot of an artist in transition, navigating between the raw edges of his 70s output and the more polished direction he would take in the years to come. Recorded between Florida's Triad Studios and Malibu's Indigo, the tracks resonate with a kind of unforced authenticity that's increasingly rare in modern music. You'll know some of these tunes - the majority did turn up in other LP tracklistings eventually - but re-pieced together it's clear there's a quiet confidence here, as if Young, unburdened by the pressures of commercial expectation, was simply allowing the music to flow out. Opening with the delicate 'Sail Away,' Young sets a tone that's both intimate and expansive, a rare combination that permeates the entire set. 'Lost In Space' follows, its understated melancholy giving way to moments of real tenderness, as though Young was channeling something deeply personal without ever letting it feel too heavy. The rolling 'Captain Kennedy' showcases his gift for storytelling, while 'Goin' Back' and 'Human Highway' bring with them echoes of past greatness, weaving themes of reflection and longing with his signature mix of folk and country. By the time 'Pocahontas' rolls around, it's clear that the collection, though rough around the edges, forms a cohesive whole, a snapshot of Young's restless creativity and unflinching approach to songwriting.

Review: La Monte Young is one of the most important figures in the development of American minimal composition and performance, having explored the science of sound at an atomic level through his use of just intonation and rational number-based tuning systems. His wife Marian Zeeler was also one of his closest collaborators, and in 1974 they released their second album Dream House 78'17" as a demonstration of the ideas they had been proposing in their work. Side A was recorded at a private concert which also features Jon Hassell and Garrett List, while Side B is an extended tonal study via a bowed gong, which was monitored precisely through oscilloscopes for an exacting immersion in harmonic interplay and its physical and psychoacoustic properties.

Review: Reissued on Important Records comes Agartha, which forms part of a long wave of easy listening and new age music made popular in the 1980s and 90s. Meredith Young-Sowers joins a class of musicians, from Eliane Radigue to Steven Halpern, who made music as utilities for meditation. Young-Sowers' work, however, may share an aesthetic with these knowns, but otherwise nurtures an eerier vibe. Agartha was originally released in 1986 on cassette, and is made up largely of unnaturally sustained sine tone unfurlings laid in harmonic or minor keys, as if to decouple the unsettling atmosphere of the music from their meditative capacity. Though it sounds like it, the record is not aleatory, rather it is composed expressly to sound like it has been transmitted from an extimate point outside of human consciousness. No wonder it is named after a mythical land said to lie deep below the Earth's crust!

Review: Stepping into the world of Hiroshi Yoshimura is like entering a tranquil garden, where every sound is a carefully cultivated element of the landscape. His music, originating in the 1980s, blurs the lines between ambient soundscapes and composed pieces, creating an immersive experience that evokes the serenity of the natural world. 'Over The Clover' whispers with the gentle rustling of leaves, while 'Flora' blossoms with delicate melodies. Yoshimura captures the essence of specific natural elements, from the unfurling of a morning glory in 'Asagao' to the subtle shifts in air pressure in 'Wind Echo'. He even finds music in the unexpected, as 'Maple Syrup Factory' introduces a surprising sweetness to the sonic landscape. But Yoshimura's work is not simply about recreating the sounds of nature. The Japanese musician and composer encourages a deeper listening experience, where subtle details and intricate textures emerge with each listen, definitely music that rewards close attention.

Review: Following the explosion of Japanese ambient reissues in the past five years or so, certain artists have become household names in a curious combination of favourable streaming conditions and a consistent need for people to slow their lives down via music. Alongside the likes of Midori Takada and Yasuaki Shimizu stands Hiroshi Yoshimura, oddly omnipresent on YouTube sidebars but more importantly universally appealing for his exquisite, wholly natural take on environmental music. 1986 album Surround has been crying out for a reissue for a long time and finally Temporal Drift have done the right thing and brought this stunning record back into reach. Faithfully remastered with the fervent audiophile audience in mind, this is a long overdue celebration of one of Yoshimura's finest releases.

Review: Given his innate ability to craft intensely atmospheric and often fundamentally unsettling music, it seems apt that Thom Yorke has finally got around to producing a film soundtrack. It's fitting, too, that said soundtrack is for Luca Guadagnino's weirdo remake of 1977 Italian horror flick "Suspiria". Yorke nails the brief, delivering a string of chilling, otherworldly instrumentals that not only draw on his well-established love of dark ambient and gruesome electronica, but also foreboding neo-classical movements and sparse, wide-eyed arrangements. There are a smattering of superb vocal moments, too, with recent single "Suspirio" - described by one broadsheet reviewer as "the saddest waltz you'll ever here" - standing out.

Review: Although born and raised in Holland, the duo behind the Yin Yin project "make music for an imaginary tropical Island" based "somewhere between the Netherlands and South East Asia". It's an apt description of their undeniably humid, wide-eyed style, which variously combines elements of surf-rock, dub, psychedelia, ambient, electronica, spaced-out synth-pop and various traditional South East Asian musical tropes. It's a style that makes this long promised debut album a unique, distinctive and hugely vibrant listening experience. While inventive and colourful, their music is also largely dancefloor friendly and highly addictive. In other words, this is one debut album that's well worth picking up.

Review: The third full-length studio album from Singaporean singer-songwriter-producer Nat Cmiel (aka yeule) released to rave reviews earlier this September, following an ethereal rollout with singles 'dazies', 'ghosts' and 'inferno' showcasing exactly what yeule excels at: worldbuilding. 'softscars' is now the 3rd instalment in one of the most exciting album runs in modern alt-pop, shifting away from the glitchy, electronic ambience of predecessor 'Glitch Princess', moving in a more rock-centric, brighter direction. This isn't to say the album doesn't have its soul-crushing moments, opening track 'x w x' closes with a defiant scream of frustration, whilst the drums, guitar and synths fight each other for dominance - bottoming out into a gentle outro sequence. The calm after the storm. We could go on about this album for hours, as a yeule fan it feels so fresh but so perfect with it's oscillating directness in delivery. Whereas 'Glitch Princess' felt like travelling through a clastrophobia-inducing tunnel at time, 'softscars' is that moment you burst out of the tunnel and are hit with a huge green vista. It's my album of the year but, hey, what do I know?

Review: Incidentally sharing the name of a pioneering East End gangster film of the same name - one of the first films to receive an 'X' rating - Yellow Balloon was also the name of this psychedelic "sunshine pop" band from Los Angeles. Filled with brow-beaten jaunts, scatting bops and tambourine shakes, this fab fivesome's first and only album is an excellent foray into the late 1960s zeitgeist, not to mention the enduring talents of the band's leader Gary Zekley.

Review: Following on from 2022's critically acclaimed, Mercury Prize nominated debut LP The Overload, crossing over the bridge provided by last year's absurdist, Black Mirror-indebted eight-minute stand alone single 'The Trench Coat Museum', everyone's new favourite Leeds based post-punks Yard Act are set to capitalise on their momentous winning streak with the highly anticipated sophomore effort Where's My Utopia? Recorded in collaboration with Gorillaz member Remi Kabaka Jr handling production duties, sonically the band have opted to open their playful dynamic to as many sprawling influences as possible, simultaneously leaning into synth-laden new wave territory whilst citing Fela Kuti's political messaging and worldly psychedelia as an integral aspect. As lyrically snide and sharp as ever, the reliable brand of tongue-firmly-in-cheek socio-political commentary reaches ludicrous new heights when unpacking the band's success to date, their self-awareness of being signed to a subsidiary of a subsidiary of another soulless corporation aggressively at odds with the members' personal ethos, and even the increasing admiration/begrudgery that stems from the ascension within the eyes of their supporters. It's all clever, dense, humorous and delivered via an onslaught of razor-focused bangers. In essence, it's Yard Act.

Review: The reissued and remastered CD of XTC's Skylarking, now with added bonus material including a 5.1 mix, revisits the band's dynamic collaboration with producer Todd Rundgren. Released in 1986, the album showed the band's transformation into a studio-only group after frontman Andy Partridge's decision to stop touring. The album featured the band's breakthrough hit 'Dear God' that helped catapult them to one of the leaders of alternative music . This remastered edition enhances the intricate, lush arrangements of tracks like 'Summer's Cauldron' and 'Season Cycle,' highlighting the album's day-in-the-life concept conceived by Rundgren. Rundgren's influence is evident in the album's seamless transitions and cohesive narrative, despite the behind-the-scenes tension with Partridge. The producer's knack for innovative arrangements and Partridge's introspective lyrics blend into a compelling collection of songs. Colin Moulding's pastoral contributions, such as 'Grass' and 'The Meeting Place,' add depth and charm to the album. The added 5.1 mix and bonus material bring a fresh perspective to this classic, allowing fans to experience Skylarking in a new light. From the upbeat 'Earn Enough for Us' to the reflective 'Dying' and 'Sacrificial Bonfire,' the album remains an important piece in XTC's creative growth and Rundgren's visionary production.

Incubus Succubus II

Review: The influential German band Xmal Deutschland are overhead rafters in the great mead hall of goth. Their propulsive successes throughout the 1980s meant the genre likely couldn't've done without them. A large band come music collective, made up of at least eight members at any given time, Xmal's formation in Hamburg and would presell audiences on a stalwart performance rep, thanks to an early tour and gig residency in support of dream pop preeminents Cocteau Twins. Rallied to fame by their goth classics 'Incubus Succubus' and 'Qual', this 2xCD review conjoins two of the earliest and most pivotal albums on which both of said singles were housed - Fetisch and Tocsin - along with tracks from other key releases, such as Incubus Succubus II. Helping blacken an otherwise dreamy time, these LPs highlight the gloomier soils of a superficially bright 1980s soundfield, which otherwise roseated by shoegaze. Photography by Kevin Cummins, Paul Slattery, Sheila Rock and more all capture the spirit.

Review: This CD edition of X Mal Deutschland highlights the Hamburg formed band in its infancy. The band started making music in 1980 and this compilation gathers their first two singles worth of music along with two special tracks off other compilations they were featured on. The band sound is unqiue and powerful - goth rock, experimental and new wave are just a few styles the tracks can verge into. In just the two years that make up this CD, you can hear the band growing from a raw experimention with sound and structure to a powerful goth rock band. A special shout out to the Sacred Bones label for trusting in their music enough to release this.

Review: A compilation of tracks from past albums, collaborations and formerly unreleased cuts by XL Middleton, G-funk-master extraordinaire from LA. Compiled specifically for XL's recent Japan tour, this release comprises the bulk of remaining copies, which, we can vouch, flew largely off the shelves, and fast. The sole focus on G-funk, albeit in his own signature style, has proven so far effective for XL; his production style tends towards the unmistakably steezy and squeezy, and it also borders on West Coast crunk and DJ Mustard-esque ratchet at points. XL entertains wonky 808s and smooth 2-stepped blears, effectively conveying the mood of "layered back", best enshrined in the happily system-conscious track 'Unemployment'.

Review: 25 years have now passed since Liverpool legend Pete Wylie and his long-term backing band released Songs of Strength & Heartbreak, which marked the post-punk era combo's return to action after 16 long years. Something of a triumphant return, the set flits between raucous punk energy ('Never Loved as a Child'), Oasis-ish riffs on mid-late period Beatles ('Sing All The Saddest Songs', 'Disneyland Forever'), riff-heavy post-Britpop indie-rock ('I Still Love You', post-punk headiness ('Loverboy') and all manner of orchestrated, reach-for-the-ceiling sing-alongs ('Hey! Mona Lisa'). To mark the album's birthday, Chrysalis has served up this expanded 'deluxe' edition. Unusually, this time round CD1 boasts the album as it was originally demo'd and produced in 1998 - including a slew of songs that were subsequently shelved - with the 'released' version (2000) nestled on CD2.

Review: Fresh from appearing in Bob Marley biopic One Love (as one of the early, lesser-known members of the Wailers), 30-year-old Jamaican J Written (real name Jason Wright) drop his debut album - a set produced by legendary American reggae mixer Doctor Dread and featuring a stellar line-up of backing musicians (drummer Sly Dunbar included). Sitting somewhere between classic lover's rock and digital roots-reggae, the album's focal point is undoubtedly the artist's rich, soulful voice. While he does 'toast' in patois at times (see 'West Indies'), for the most part Wright showcases his full vocal range. The results are undeniably impressive, with the tender 'We Alright', ska-influenced 'King Kong', vibrant opener 'Work To Do' and exotic 'Keep People Poor' (where sitars and electric guitar solos catch the ear) standing out.

Review: Bernie Worrell's posthumous release Wave from the Wooniverse emerges as a brilliant example to his enduring influence and creativity. Hailing from Asheville, NC, Worrell, known for his groundbreaking work with Moog synthesizers and his tenure with Parliament-Funkadelic and Talking Heads, left behind quite a bit of unreleased material upon his passing in 2016. Curated and completed by a stellar lineup including Sean Lennon, Bootsy Collins, and Buckethead among others, this CD collection breathes new life into Worrell's compositions. From funk-infused grooves to ethereal synth landscapes, each track showcases Worrell's lyrical keyboard prowess and musical versatility. The album's diversity reflects Worrell's eclectic career, blending genres seamlessly while maintaining a cohesive sonic narrative. With contributions from original P-Funk members and contemporary collaborators, Wave from the Wooniverse resonates as a fitting tribute to a visionary musician. Whether you're drawn to deep-fried funk or introspective instrumentals, this release is a stunning CD for aficionados of innovative and soul-stirring music.

Review: For the first outside of the US and Australia, the World Party best of is released. The band, led by late, great multi-instrumentalist ex-member of The Waterboys Karl Wallinger, who remains one of the finest musicians in British pop history. The group, which included Robbie Williams' musical director Guy Chambers for some time, dealt in the best kind of pop music, borrowing from such a diverse pool of influences to create something timeless. A standout hit on here is as relevant now as it was back in the 80s when it was first release: 'Ship of Fools' is about the greed of our leaders and is depressingly apt. Meanwhile, 'She's the One' was famously covered by Robbie Williams and it's testament to the underappreciated genius of Prestatyn-raised Wallinger that it's one of Williams' best known songs. He's a monumental talent whose legacy will resonate for generations.

Review: New York's Billy Woods is not just a rapper but a confronter of disavowed, barbaric truths, where the sordid, postcolonial gluts of American oligarchy are refracted through an excoriating, critical and surreal lens. The prognosis has always been dire: Woods' lyrics - whether on his debut History Will Absolve Me (2012) or the more recent Haram (2021) - are prophecies against the sputtering machine-regime of racial enmity, where the Other is misconceived an essential cog in societal works. Golliwog ramps up the bad trip factor, suggesting an eerie mix of negritude and irresolution, with a supporting cast of musicians ensuring a wonky production prowess: Kenny Segal, Conductor Wiliams and LA jazzists Human Error Club. Frantz Fanon is proclaimed a zombie, as licentious lyrics run amok on 'Misery'.

Review: According to the band themselves, the Wombats' new full-length - the long-serving trio's sixth studio set in total - is their most "sophisticated and sonically adventurous yet", exploring lyrical themes of "socially awkwardness, internal strife and everyday LA life". It's certainly a musical departure, with the Liverpool-born band and producer John Congleton (best known for his work with St Vincent and Death Cab For Cutie) largely eschewing the synths and indie-dance influences of old in favour of a sound rooted in British "beat music" of the late 1960s, jangly 1980s indie-rock, and the Britpop era. It's a notable change in direction, but it works really well - as the bold, beautiful and undeniably catchy songs 'Can't Say No', 'Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want To Come' (a future anthem for socially anxious misfits everywhere in the same mould as Pulp's 'Mis-shapes') and the surprisingly funky 'Blood On The Hospital Floor'.

Review: The name Wolf Alice is derived from a story by Angela Carter, and appropriately enough this savage and infectious debut does have more than a little of the fairytale gone macabre about it. The band's indie-rock sound veers in a myraid other stylistic diversions, taking in delicate folk-pop, kraut-tinged groove and My Bloody Valentine guitar scree whilst Ellie Roswell's charismatic whisper-to-scream presence remains fervent and compelling at the mic. Moreover, these songs not only have claws but know how to use 'em, rendering 'My Love Is Cool' more than a mere zesty reinvention of grunge yore, but somewhat akin to the sound of a major new talent taking their first blood.

Review: Wire's formative late-70s run gets the 7" treatment with Nine Sevens, a box of nine vinyl singles spanning 1977 to 1980. Remastered from original analogues, the set pulls together six Harvest-era sides, one from Rough Trade, an unreleased 1980 session, plus the hard-to-find 154 bonus EP - all wrapped in replica artwork and housed in a sharp Bruce Gilbert-designed box. We follow Wire's rapid evolution from clipped punk minimalism into stranger, shiftier terrains, where terse, abrasive, and knowingly off-centre master-demos abrade the ears like rusty scalers. Each 7" sees a staggered digital release, but these tracks won't be lumped into any retrospective, making this the only way to get the full physical set.

So & Slow It Grows (4:18)
Review: After Robert Grey's 1990 exit, Wire morphed into WIR, a project designed to wrap up their Mute Records contract with a stripped-down, sequencer-led approach. Graham Lewis took lead vocals while the band reworked their own back catalogue. A chance to reflect on what had been, as opposed to what was yet to be, WIR's lifespan was brief, with only a handful of shows and two conceptual events dubbed I Saw You In Clapham (April 1992) and Vienna (February 1993) rolled into the ensuing campaign. On the Vienna trip, they recorded a sprawling 25-minute session for Austria's ORF, curated by Peter Rehberg of MEGO fame, released by Touch in 1996. This 2025 remaster adds a fresh take on their darkest pop moment, 'So & Slow', reimagined in a live-inspired arrangement with a nod to Taylor Swift's re-recording style.

Review: As you may well be aware, the Winstons' most significant contribution to musical history was the righteous drum break featured on their 1969 single 'Amen, Brother', a breakbeat that has since become the backbone of countless hip-hop, hardcore and D&B tracks. Yet as good as that break is, there was always much more to love hidden in their catalogue, particularly debut album Color Him, Father. As this surprise reissue on CD proves, it is a genuinely brilliant collection of loved up East Coast soul songs - both dancefloor-friendly and downtempo - which on this edition has been expanded via the addition of a quartet of previous single-only cuts. This, then, is the definitive version of a vitally important soul album.

Review: Adam Wiltzie is an American-born, Belgium-based ambient composer, sound designer, film soundtracker and one half of A Winged Victory For The Sullen. His latest album-length suite was inspired by two things: a recurring dream in which people die after listening to his music, and a fascination with sodium pentathol, a barbiturate routinely used as a general anaesthetic. It's a kind of musical exploration of - to paraphrase his label's accompanying press release - tiptoeing between beauty and oblivion, or sleepiness and wakefulness. Mixed by Loop man Robert Hampson and featuring strings recorded in Budapest, the album ebbs and flows majestically, with billowing orchestral moments nestling side by side with creepy ambience, immersive and dream-like soundscapes, simmering melodic motifs and the kind of arty but enveloping fare that reminded us a little of the Orb and Robert Fripp's mid-90s FFWD project.

Review: Former Porcupine Tree founder member Steven Wilson has packed a lot into his career since the early 1990s - not least being a leading light of the post-progressive movement - but until last year he had never written or recorded a Christmas song. He was challenged to do that by a friend and, with a little help from collaborator Randy McStine, conjured up 'December Skies' - a suitably nostalgic, dreamy, progressive rock-tinged affair that touches on some of the usual Christmas single tropes while steadfastly refusing to revert to cliches. It has a pleasingly timeless feel, sounding like a largely cheese-free echo of the mid 1970s. On this limited-edition 'deluxe' CD single, you get both vocal and instrumental versions and a trio of Christmas cards based on the song's animated video.

Review: Vanessa Williams' Survivor marks her return to music after a 15-year break, where she focused on acting and other ventures. In this album, Williams seamlessly blends the many facets of her career, from pop and r&b to jazz and theatre. The lead single, 'Legs (Keep Dancing)', is a bold, confident dance track that reflects her enduring energy, while the house-pop track 'Bop!' entertains her fanbase with cheeky humor and vibrant beats. The album's range includes pop standards like 'Junk Man' and the jazzy 'Zaz Zuh Zaz,' where Williams showcases her sultry, polished vocals. Her love for classic music shines, especially on 'Come Dance with Me' and 'Being Good Isn't Good Enough', where she brings an elegant, theatrical touch. With thoughtful production, Survivor revisits Vanessa Williams' signature sound while incorporating fresh elements. Despite its familiar themes, the title track carries a personal resonance, illustrating her journey and resilience. Williams' versatility and her ability to evolve while staying true to her roots, proving that she's still a commanding presence in music. Review: The Will Gregory Moog Ensemble's debut album, Heat Ray, is a riveting exploration inspired by the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes. Recorded on analogue synthesizers alongside the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the ensemble - led by Goldfrapp co-creator Will Gregory - brings together up to 14 talented players, including Portishead's Adrian Utley and Mute's Daniel Miller. Heat Ray fuses spirals of melody, circular structures, and intricate patterns, drawing inspiration from Archimedes' mathematical principles. The album's genesis during pandemic lockdowns reflects Gregory's deep dive into Archimedes' life, sparked by online lectures. With a lineup boasting instruments like the Minimoog and Prophet 6, the ensemble weaves a stunning superstructure of sounds, guided by Gregory's effervescent spirit of discovery. The result is a splendid blend of ancient history and modern innovation, where musical exploration converges with mathematical curiosity. Heat Ray not only pays homage to Archimedes' legacy but also propels listeners towards an endlessly fascinating future.

Review: First released on streaming platforms last summer, Wilco's 'Hot Sun Cool Shroud' EP was uniformly praised by critics. Much more than a stop gap between albums (it arrived roughly 12 months after the outfit's lauded 13th studio full-length, Cousin), the six-track set bristles with inventiveness while flitting between styles and tempos. So, opener 'Hot Sun', a sticky slab of Americana-tinged jangly indie brilliance, is followed by the reverb and solo-laden alt-rock squall of 'Livid' and the gentle, string-laden swoon of 'Ice Cream'. And so it continues, with the fuzzy positivity and weary vocals of 'Annihilation' being joined by the pleasant, impossible-to-pigeonhole experimentalism of 'Inside The Bell Bones' and the twinkling, heartfelt melancholia of 'Say You Love Me'.

Review: The most eminent British rock opera of all time, The Who's Quadrophenia, released in 1973, hears Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Roger Daltrey conceive and narrate the angst of a young postroom worker, Jimmy, living in post-war Britain amid the schismatics of the mods and rockers, as they warred in converse step. Exploring rebellion, let-off steam, and alienation through music, the record firmly set the stage for the 1979 film adaptation of the same name, which popularised the thoroughfare connecting London-Brighton as a vital identificatory artery for a certain angst-ridden generation. The album features standout tracks like '5:15' and 'Love, Reign O'er Me', and remains one of The Who's most celebrated works. It's now reissued through Bespoke Editions, with two CDs of Pete Townshend's demos, and a 5.1 DVD-A remix of eight tracks, plus handwritten lyrics in a book and a 13,000-word essay from Townshend.

Review: German guitarist and bandleader JJ Whitefield, known for his authentic, timeless sound, delves into 'spiritual jazz' on his latest album, The Infinity Of Nothingness. With a career spanning over three decades, Whitefield's journey began in the early 90s with Poets Of Rhythm, pioneers of the Deep Funk scene. Since then, he has explored various musical styles, including funk with Karl Hector and Ethiopian Jazz, West African highlife, Kraut-rock, and ambient music under his Rodinia moniker. The Infinity Of Nothingness is a set of mature, meditative orchestrations, drawing inspiration from Sun Ra and Pharoah Sanders without becoming mere tributes. The album weaves subtle elements of hip-hop, library music, and avant-garde into its sound, creating a unified, trance-like feel. From the sparse opener 'Nothingness' to the three-part 'Infinity Suite' - 'Time', 'Space' and 'Energy' - the album reflects Whitefield's exceptional ability to craft music that resonates deeply with its influences while standing the test of time. As with his early work, Whitefield's latest project continues to set a high standard in musical exploration.

Review: Though prolific since emerging at the dawn of the millennium, White Denim have refused to settle into a specific sound, with main man James Patrelli flitting through styles, influences and inspirations (and band members) at a rate of knots. On the simply titled 12 - yep, the band's 12th album to date - Partelli and company subtly switch focus once more, this time with the help of his latest co-writer (and the band's synth player) Michael Hunter and a broad range of guest musicians. The results are bright, attractive and thoroughly enjoyable, with notes of tropical guitars and the work of highlife legend Ebo Taylor rubbing shoulders with nods to bossa-nova, Southern soul, jangling indie-rock and The Beatles circa The White Album.
