Review: Sierra Ferrell's third full-length release signals a remarkable culmination of her evolution from itinerant performer to one of Nashville's most beguiling voices. Raised on the road and sharpened in busking circles, Ferrell here folds bluegrass, old-time swing and pre-war balladry into something tender and deeply her own. 'The Sea' and 'Jeremiah' set the tone with sly melodies and gently wayward arrangements, while 'Bells of Every Chapel'-a duet with Billy Strings-waltzes between devotion and delirium. 'West Virginia Waltz' and 'Silver Dollar' nod to her Appalachian roots, but the instrumentation is never nostalgic: saws, toy pianos, accordions and lap steel brush against each other with intuitive charm. Tracks like 'Give It Time' and 'Why'd Ya Do It' showcase her voice's husky magnetism, at once earthy and elusive. Across twelve tracks, Ferrell moves freely through genre and form, backed by a meticulous studio cast including Jerry Douglas, Tim O'Brien, and Sarah Jarosz. It's a record steeped in tradition yet unburdened by it-never flashy, just assured, generous and strange in all the right ways.

Review: Hot Creations gathers four peak-time weapons from across the label's recent catalogue, with an emphasis on upfront UK energy. Manchester's Goosey links with Dope Earth Alien on 'Funky Shit', a wobbly, sub-heavy club cut built around slick swung drums and warped vocal refrains. 'Proper Whopper' from Murphy's Law, Sam Curran and Harry Unsworth fires off booming low-end and pitch-bent sirens with the kind of swagger that suits high-tempo basements and outdoor stages alike. Sidney Charles offers a sleeker counterpoint on 'Disco Bumpin', layering Aleya Mae's melodic vocals over rubbery synths and crisp house drums. Rounding it out is Sao Paulo's nocapz, whose 'Gettin' Heard' throws down fast, bouncy percussion with ravey stabs and a locked-in low-end groove. All four are built to slam.

Review: One of Bob Marley's most acclaimed LPs on reissue here, and it's an album that overflows with funk, poise, and defiant overtones. Marley recorded the album in 1977 after surviving an assassination attempt at his home in Jamaica. Following the attack, he left the country and relocated to London, and it's here that the collection was captured. At times a commentary on the political violence that blighted Jamaica during the era, other times joyful celebration, the music is some of the reggae icon's most potent. The hypnotic groove and chanted vocals of the title track are an obvious standout, as are the feel-good flex of 'Jammin' and the heartfelt vulnerability of 'Is This Love'. Presented as a double pack, all the music gets the groove spacing it so richly deserves.

Review: Originally unleashed in 1993 via Underdog Recordings, 'Fugitive' by Dave Wallace (Aquasky, Mad Dog) and Shaun O'Hara (Aurora) finally returns in its second pressing, this time on black wax. First reissued in 2019 as part of Vinyl Fanatiks' yellow vinyl Quattro series, the much-demanded jungle 12" now lands again after six years, cut from the original DATs by Simon at The Exchange. A cult Bournemouth production, 'Fugitive' gained notoriety after Bukem double-dropped it at midnight during Dreamscape NYE 1993/94, an essential, heads-know moment in UK rave history. This reissue comes com-pressed to 200 copies, and at just one per customer, it'll surely stay a sought-after snapshot of breaks-heavy euphoria from the scene's salad days.

Review: Chicago-based DJ and producer Smith launches his new label, Smooth Edits, with a fiery 7" of house and disco-funk energy. Formerly behind Smooth Agent Records, Smith continues his legacy of groove-laden cuts with 'Dance On The Dub' and 'Good Beat 2025' on Side-A. The former is a party anthem steeped in Parliament-Funkadelic and Kool & The Gang flavors, featuring thick basslines, rhythmic handclaps and swirling synth textures. 'Good Beat 2025' turns up the funk with tight horn arrangements and irresistibly bouncy drum programming, ensuring dancefloor momentum. On the flip, 'Dance On The Funk (Full Disco Mix)' blends early house's stomping four-on-the-floor with silky disco elements. Crisp edits highlight the interplay between funky guitar riffs, swelling strings and a rolling bass groove, all driven by Chicago house's unmistakable energy. Smith's mastery of both classic and contemporary club sounds is on full display here to kick off the new label in style.

Review: Detroit rap doyen Apollo Brown brings out Grandeur, which plays back like a victory lap and stress test rolled into one. With 19 tracks and a cast sprawling from M.O.P. to Chino XL to Evidence, it's pitched as his most expansive solo record to date, doing swell justice to the theme of personal magnificence. Also entirely self-produced by Apollo, his soul-laced, vinyl-dust production secures an individuality of mood, though collectivity abounds in the collabs, which clock in at 18 out of 19 tracks: 'Red Pill' and Verbal Kent match his pacing effortlessly, while Evidence sounds razor-sharp on 'There's Always Radio'.

Review: Cinthie's 803 Crystal Grooves offshoot Collective Cuts returns with a sharp four-track group hacksaw, which snips off four freshly sheared sonic swatches from both ends of the Atlantic. Active since 2020 and previously home to names like Kettama, UC Beatz and Anaxander, the sub-label continues its mission of spotlighting idiosyncratic house from the deeper fringes. Nashville's Willy Mikk kicks off with 'Devastate', a tough-edged hip-house workout built on punchy drums, rubbery bass and chopped rap bars, before Luca Olivotto goes disco baller on 'Passion', weaving nimble guitar through dream pads and kicks. 180 degrees over, and it's Batch One's 'When U R Free' with an arpy, pianistic uplift, before Basel-based Spaniard Roque's 'Bring It Down, all clipped vox, dubbed stabs and creeping strings.

Review: From Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley returns with another simmering display of his self-styled Simigwa-funk-part highlife, part jazz, part proto-rap, all unmistakably his own. Still sharp at 77, Ambolley commands a tight ensemble through groove-led declarations like 'Wake Up Afrika' and 'U Like Or U No Like', riding swung basslines and crisp horn arrangements with the flair of a master bandleader. 'God E See You' finds him slipping into a smoky, Afro-soul register, while 'New Simi Rapp' stretches out into hypnotic territory, led by flutes, baritone sax and rhythmic mantras. 'Ochoko Bila' and 'If You Want To Know' are more playful cuts, full of bounce and quick-fire wisdom. The production, split between Ghana and the Netherlands, balances live grit with rich detail-everything breathes, nothing is wasted. As ever, Ambolley's voice is both storyteller and instrument: loose, commanding, and deeply rooted in diasporic sound. This is music that moves and means.

Bjorn Wagner's all-star tropical disco band, Magic Source, loves a cover version. The outfit's first EP boasted, as a bonus cut, a superb (and colourful) take on Tom Tom Club's 'Genius of Love'. On this belated sequel, they've gone one better by re-inventing A Guy Called Gerald's pioneering UK house classic 'Voodoo Ray' as a driving, all-live tropical disco jam. It's cleverly done, with all the key elements being replicated, sometimes in canny ways (the acid lines now become Clavinet lines, the synth-bass is now bass guitar, and so on). It's a fantastic cover all told and one that is far more than a smile-inducing novelty. Also superb is flip-side 'Interplanetary Bounce', a spacey jazz-funk/disco fusion cut rich in fuzzy horns, vintage synth sounds and shuffling drums.

Whether it's the discordant organ furzes of 'It's The New Thing' or the snarled highway punk of '2nd Dark Age', this one's a great distillation of the Fall's sound at a select interval. Culled almost exclusively from the period spanning their Live At The Witch Trials era to the brink of the Hex Enduction Hour, the album compiles ferocious stage renditions of early singles, delivered by a revolving door of members as usual. Yet it was also born from frustration with how other Fall archival material has been handled, and how more recent lineups have been emphasised and represented as immutable over and above classic, yet more unusual suspects. Steered by ex-Fall members Paul and Steve Hanley, Marc Riley and Craig Scanlon, Popstock exists as a corrective, revisiting a pivotal moment with a twist.
