Review: After five years apart, Italian composer Eraldo Bernochi and Japanese violinist, electronica producer and current Tangerine Dream member Hoshiko Yamana return with a sequel to their much-loved 2020 album Mujo. Described by the pair's label, Denovali, as "a deeply cinematic experience", Sabi cannily combines the slow-burn, trance-inducing synthesizer sequences of Tangerine Dream, the intergalactic electronic expressiveness of ambient techno, the thematic movements of modern classical, Yamana's emotive violin motifs and the spaced-out ambient iciness often associated with Geir Jensson's Biosphere project. It's a genuinely brilliant album all told, with the pair smartly sashaying between hazy melancholia, string-laden creepiness and picturesque aural colour.

Review: Denovali presents the second cooperation album by Italian composer, arranger, producer and guitarist Eraldo Bernocchi, in collaboration with Berlin-based Japanese violinist, composer, electronic producer and Tangerine Dream member Hoshiko Yamane. Bernocchi and Yamane have come together here for the second time after finding inspiration in the Japanese concept of "sabi" - an aesthetic that celebrates the beauty of impermanence and decay. It is often associated with the simplicity, austerity, and solitude found in nature, and is said to evoke a sense of melancholy, nostalgia, and reverence for the passage of time. The record, to match, is a unique blend of electronic and acoustic music, with Bernocchi's pulsating textures and Yamane's haunting treated violin melodies weaving together to create a captivating and emotional sonic landscape.

Review: Aguieere's next album is a fine coming together of Antwerp synthesist David Edren and Tokyo minimalist Hiroki Takahashi. They make a nice and natural connection it seems as they explore a wide range of subtle electronics, and contemplative synth-scapes and explore the potency of restraint, open space and sonic patience. This is artful ambient throughout with the likes of the first tune 'Dusk Decorum' setting the tone with wide open vistas and twinkling, starry horizons. There is plenty of great synth colorisation in these tunes as they ebb and flow throughout the orchestral lullaby of 'Stalactime', which is a real highlight.

Review: Now here's a rarity for you. Not even many of the most committed megafans know that Brian Eno, Holger Czukay and J.Peter Schwalm, accompanied by Raoul Walton and Jern Atai, performed a secret live music show, outside the esteemed Kunst-und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, situated in the city of Bonn, in August 1998. Forming a part of the opening party of Eno's Future Light-Lounge Proposal multimedia installation, this furtively-recorded album hears an exclusive slice of incidental "high-altitude food music", of course made during Brian Eno's airborne ambient era. Now reissued via Gronland, this five-piece cut of sophisti-ambi-krauttronica makes for a welcome surprise.

Review: A mythical collaborative live album - documenting an appearance shared between Brian Eno, Can's Holger Czukay and J. Peter Schwalm in 1998 - Sushi! Roti! Reibekuchen! is a three-hour ambient kraut improvisation, which first coincided with Eno's then hot-topic multimedia light installation at the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, known as the Future Light-Lounge Proposal. Schwalm prepared ideas for the session and guests ate the three foods from the event and album's title; this provided sufficient, but slow-burning energy to fuel the intense whorls, feedback freakouts, snake-charmer melodies and metrically challenging rhythms that make up its sound.

Review: Drew Sullivan of Slow Dancing Society association and Ludvig Cimbrelius aka Purl are the pair who make up the Hallow Under duo. Both are experienced and visionary musicians who we're told spent four years crafting their self-titled debut album and allowing it to mature and "become ready for the light." Now is its time and we feel it was worth the wait: it kicks off with 'Drift', a slow-burning and heart-aching ambient beauty with yawning pads and grainy surfaces. Plaintive piano notes come into the picture on 'Blossom' while 'Night' is more quiet and empty and 'Drop' is a heavenly place with angelic melody. This is magic and mysterious in equal measure.

Review: The fourth ever solo studio album from the acclaimed electronic artist and composer Laurel Halo, Atlas is intended to guide the listener through their own subconscious mind, coming as an intense sequence of soaring ambiences and beatless jazz montages. Finding its footing in instrumental improvisation by Halo herself, plus featuring artists Coby Sey, James Underwood and Lucy Railton - and then blowing any assumptive connotation with jazz out of the park with its subtly effected vocal processing and electronic tinkerings and washes thereafter - fans can be sure that this is not going to be your stock experimental affair.

Review: Laurel Halo has always forged her own distinctive path from one project to the next, at times toying with the structures of electronic music and at others heading in a more classically-trained, minimalist direction. As such, it's no surprise that her new album Atlas is both unpredictable in its style, and utterly magnificent with it. Playing out as 'a suite of sensual ambient jazz collages', Halo captures something of the ghostly, barely there atmosphere of The Caretaker but replaces the cracked sadness with cosy, comforting mood lurking in the middle distance. It's a hazy, sleepy Sunday afternoon experience with extravagant detail and intention folded elegantly into gorgeously understated music, as compelling as we've come to expect from a standout maverick.

Review: Danish composer Anders Lauge Meldgaard and string trio Halvcirkel rack up a new milestone in their ongoing musical partnership with this collaborative album, Spirit, on the wonderfully experimental label Ar & Dag. Blending acoustic and electronic elements into an intriguing work of intricate string arrangements and Meldgaard's Ondomo and modular synth textures, the result is an evocative, genre-agnostic work. The likes of 'Song Of The Meadow In Bloom' are full of the joys of Spring with an undercurrent of mischief, while 'For Kun Du Ved Hvor Meget Jeg Nod Dig' is a more suspenseful and eerie sound of unresolved oops and sonic chaos. Their partnership began in 2016 through performances with Frisk Frugt and has since evolved into a deep creative bond and Spirit showcases that artistic synergy with real richness.

Review: Big emotions often come in small, intimate packages. Initially at least. Judith Hamann opens her stunning contemporary classical-ambient meditation with the kind of hush that means music and sound creep over you without making themselves instantly known. Before we know it, the transformation - or, perhaps more accurately, transportation - is complete. Using field recording techniques, Hamman augments the electronic harmonies and refrains with au naturel noises, from the hubbub of distant conversation to an asthmatic's whistle, all of which places the plugged-in and synthesised in a very human place. The result is something that feels timeless, as crystalline and clear as it is water-weathered and sepia-hued. The overall affect is mysterious and adventurous, like walking down a serene empty beach only to realise you can't remember which direction you came from.

To match the high art which spills out of the subject matter, the film's producers turned to Polish pianist, composer and singer Hania Rani. Her playing style is minimal and delicate, and she drew upon extended visits and explorations of Venice and its museums to create a fitting accompaniment to the film. Whether you have seen the film or not, this is a compelling collection of piano pieces with subtle modern touches which speak to Rani's accomplished career to date.

It is a majestic work of new age bliss that now makes its first-ever appearance on vinyl. It is something of a low key ambient masterpiece with transportative sounds that bring real depth of emotion. If you listen closely you might be able to join the dots between this and the soundtracks of some cult 80s and 90s video games but if not simply sit back and sink into the lush layers of soothing sound.

Review: The Jon Hassell retrospective series from Ndeya Records continues with 'The Living City', which captures the late composer at his creative peak, performing live at the renowned Winter Garden concert hall in New York in the 1980s. Forming something of an escape from his jazz-influenced ambient works, this performance instead shows off Hassell's interest in the popularity of sampling hip-hop at the time. With influences from Public Enemy to Teo Macero, this is a whirlwind of sampled noise and snippets, which all continually loop and circle back on each other in a mood of mild yet evocative madness.

Review: Jon Hassell's later albums were increasingly influenced by the post-jazz composer's favourite philosophies and thinkers. 'City: Works Of Fiction' - reworked into 'Psychogeography: Zones Of Feeling' here - is a strong case in point. Inspired by the work of French anarchist Guy Debord, who wrote extensively on topics such as surrealism, anti-consumerism and art, culminating in an umbrella philosophy known as situationism, Hassell's later works are perfect hazes, indeterminate ambient jazz storms through which to experience the past via psychic explorations of one's immediate surroundings.

Review: Leeds-based duo Hawthonn express their inspiration from Coil in their artist name (a tribute to the late Jhonn Balance) and it doesn't take long listening to their music to hear that indelible mark on their sound. Earth Mirror marks Layla and Phil Legard's second album for the Ba Da Bing! label out of NYC after 2018's Red Goddess (Of This Men Shall Know Nothing). Weaving a compelling mixture of low, murmuring industrial tones and pastoral folk with an occult twist, the duo move through enveloping, atmospheric spaces. At times Layla Legard's voice cuts through the mist, and elsewhere we reside in instrumental pastures, but the mood remains haunting and evocative from start to finish, not to mention masterfully rendered.

And that certainly isn't mindful background music for turning you, the listener, into the best and most productive capitalist you can possibly be. A world turned upside down, the album presents highlights such as 'Lotus Light', 'Pulse Depression' ad 'Winter Cop', which suggest anarchic themes, while also fastening a sense of jaggedness and tumult, in a style of music that is so incorrectly expected to be neither of those things.

Review: Canadian composer Hecker's movement into scoring for film and television has been a natural progression over the past 25 years and now the artist has perfectly aligned his sound with motion pictures and film. Perhaps not fully intentional by Tim but most fans point to him as an artist whose music evoke emotions that equal the power of what a film could create. Known for his transcendent soundscapes that push ambient music into unclassifiable realms, Hecker collects a series of compositions originally created for projects like Infinity Pool, The North Water, Luzifer and La Tour. While some pieces were left unused in the final productions, their standalone presentation here showcases Hecker's ability to evoke vivid atmospheres. The seven-track EP, released via Kranky, includes the hauntingly beautiful 'Sunset Key Melt', where celestial chimes echo amidst layered, dense melodies. It exemplifies Hecker's knack for crafting spacey, droning soundscapes. Meanwhile, 'Morning' begins as a delicate piano piece before unsettling feedback disrupts its serenity, blending traditional composition with experimental textures. Shards reflects a late-career revelation: Hecker's immersive sound design translates seamlessly to visual storytelling. His work on Arctic psycho-chiller The North Water and supernatural horror Luzifer underscores his ability to merge ice-cold atmospheres with emotional depth. This EP is both eerie and ethereal, showing why Hecker's style is so compelling.

Shards, a seven-track album released via Kranky, compiles selections from scoring projects like Infinity Pool, The North Water, Luzifer and La Tour. Tim Hecker's journey into film and television scoring feels like a natural evolution of his artistic vision. The haunting 'Sunset Key Melt' features celestial tones and layered textures, creating a spacey ambiance that is sure to impress. In contrast, 'Morning' begins as a serene piano melody, disrupted by unsettling feedback that blurs the line between beauty and unease. Each track balances traditional composition with experimental sound design, resulting in a collection that is both eerie and enchanting. This album reveals how seamlessly Hecker's soundscapes translate to visual narratives and the warm, tactile vinyl experience just seems to underline that even further.

Review: Dylan Henner (AD 93, Phantom Limb) returns to Dauw with Performs Raymond Scott's Soothing Sounds for Baby, an album reinterpreting selections from Scott's iconic 1962 work. Available on limited edition vinyl, featuring artwork by Skrew Studio that references the original releases. Raymond Scott's contributions to music are immeasurable and pioneering, with his records remaining uniquely interesting. Viewed through the lens of modern "ambient" music, the meaning of his compositions has evolved. Once revolutionary, they now serve as archival pieces, preserving an era of early electronic music and its technological constraints. In homage to Scott's foresight and genius, Henner recontextualises these ideas within a 2024 musician's mindset and studio, creating a version that aligns with his perception of Scott's music's purpose: soothing babies. Henner revisited the original records briefly, transcribing melodies and noting timbres, before embarking on his own creative journey. This album honors Scott's legacy while infusing it with contemporary sensibilities.

The Electric Harpsichord
Review: Further Selections from the Electric Harpsichord is a profound rediscovery of Catherine Christer Hennix's early masterwork, offering a mesmerising, never-before-heard recording of her 1976 opus. This long-lost piece, originally debuted at Stockholm's Moderna Museet, further solidifies Hennix's unique contributions to minimalism, combining precise just intonation with electronic experimentation. Like her contemporaries La Monte Young and Pandit Pran Nath, Hennix's work transcends traditional boundaries, using carefully retuned synthesisers and feedback loops to create a hallucinogenic soundscape that manipulates time, space and perception. Released shortly before her passing in 2023, this recording stands as the most comprehensive version of The Electric Harpsichord to date. Extending the previously released 26-minute fragment, this new edition spans 47 minutes, immersing listeners in sustained, shimmering waves of sound. Henry Flynt, who championed Hennix's work in the 1970s, described the music as "hallucinogenic/ecstatic sound environments" and this recording lives up to that description. The spellbinding oscillations and drones, accompanied by Hans Isgren's sheng, evoke a deeply meditative and otherworldly experience. Hennix's polymathic background in mathematics, poetry and philosophy enriches the composition, making it as intellectually rigorous as it is emotionally transformative. A landmark of minimalist music that will excite new audiences, reaffirming Hennix's lasting influence on experimental sound and the transcendent potential of her artistry.

Solo For Tamburium
Review: Since the late 60s, Catherine Christer Hennix has been exploring innovations in minimal music, computer programming, poetry and more besides, and Blank Forms Editions has been on a mission to document and celebrate her work. The Swedish artist created a custom instrument comprised of a keyboard interface controlling a suite of 88 recordings of precision-tuned tambura, and the results are a mesmerising display of harmonic interplay. Heard in unison, these tambura become a drone-like mass with constantly shifting qualities - a fantastic display of Hennix's exacting and insightful methods, but equally a beautiful listening experience.

Review: Labyrinthe! stands as a singular achievement in Pierre Henry's illustrious career, showcasing his ability to craft music even when deprived of his usual sonic resources. The sounds for this piece were supplied by GRM collaborators, each bringing their own unique qualities and textures. Despite not being his own material, Henry's distinct voice and musical vision quickly come to the forefront. Through this intricate soundscape, Henry constructs a maze of audio, focusing intently on the development and manipulation of the sounds provided. His clarity of purpose and deliberate approach is evident throughout, as he shapes the contributions of others into something unmistakably his own. The piece is built upon the interplay of disparate elements, all meticulously woven together into a cohesive sonic journey. Henry described Labyrinthe! as a collaborative venture, a fusion of 58 sound fragments from seven different composers, forming a work that feels both expansive and tightly intertwined. His harmonic sensitivity ensures that the diverse sources never clash but instead create a complex, interlocking sound world. Labyrinthe! is a brilliant testament to Henry's mastery of electroacoustic composition and his remarkable ability to turn limitations into creative triumphs.

Review: The 20th Anniversary Edition of the Beyond Good & Evil official soundtrack offers a revitalised take on the game's original music. The soundtrack features a full orchestra which manages to preserve the intimate, improvised feel of the original compositions while adding new tracks recorded with unconventional instruments. Christophe Heral, the composer, speaks of the balance between modern orchestration and the quirky, spontaneous creativity that defined the 2003 release in the accompanying notes. With additions like a broken guitar and unique tuning, this anniversary edition celebrates the artistic spirit of the franchise and offers a fresh yet faithful homage to the original music.

Review: The latest in our film soundtracks pot comes from the wondrous Matthew Herbert, the house music producer and musician who's turned his creative focus to making film scores in recent years. 'The Wonder' complements the latest film by Sebastian Leilo of the same name - a recent addition to the mainsteam Irish film canon, it's about a miraculous young girl who has managed to survive without food for 11 months. To bolster the context of the Great Famine, Herbert's music is spectral, pure and sensitive, pushing the outer limits of what a 'cinematic' ambient soundtrack can be conceived to be.

Crewdson & Cevanne - "Let Me In" (2:31)
Review: Matthew Herbert's score for Starve Acre is an atmospheric blend of tension and subtlety, perfectly complementing the film's eerie rural setting. Known for his innovative soundtracks - as well as his innovative house productions - Herbert delivers a composition that merges traditional orchestral elements with unsettling electronic soundscapes. The result is a haunting mix that mirrors the film's themes of grief, folklore, and the supernatural. Throughout the score, Herbert balances delicate, pastoral melodies with darker, more ominous tones. Tracks swell gently before giving way to deeper, more unsettling layers, capturing the oppressive sense of dread that permeates the film. The inclusion of two renditions of 'Let Me In' i one performed by actor Matt Smith and another by folk-electronic duo Crewdson & Cevanne i adds a folkish, melancholic edge to the soundtrack. Each version offers a distinct interpretation, with Smith's stripped-down approach contrasting with Crewdson & Cevanne's more textured take. Overall, Herbert's minimalist yet powerful score elevates the haunting atmosphere of Starve Acre, turning it into an unsettling sonic experience. Fans of atmospheric soundtracks and experimental compositions will appreciate the subtle craftsmanship on display.

It starts with him looking for the largest possible animal skeleton to explore though music. He settled on a full size horse and from that made flutes from its thigh bones and bows from ribs and hair. Gut strings stretched over the pelvis feature in the mid-section and even more bizarre than that is the fact he travelled to ancient cave paintings of horses in Northern Spain to record reverb at their door. Brilliantly bonkers as ever.

Review: Here's something you don't see very often: an admirable attempt to combine classical music and turntablism, with cheeky deck magician DJ Yoda joining forces with the Heritage Orchestra to perform a brand-new score from classical composer Gabriel Prokofiev. It's an interesting fusion that works well, mainly because the various scratches, juggles and doubles are not only performed using recordings of orchestral instruments, but also because they're an integral part of the classical performance. The set also contains 11 remixes of elements of the five-track score, all of which subtly take the source material in new directions via the addition of beats, electronics and experimental production techniques.

Review: While awaiting the release of her album Pripyat, Catalan composer and producer Marina Herlop found herself feeling emotionally unmoored and uncertain about her music career. During this period, she visualised herself as a gardener tending to her inner landscape by expelling negative emotions through purple weeds. This imagery became the foundation of this record which is filled with her warmest, most positive sentiments. With experimental touches still present, Herlop's voice shines with hope and energy while weaving intricate acoustic instrumentation and electronic elements. Nekkuja is a celebration of perseverance and creativity that blends abstract sounds with themes of growth, light and renewal.

Review: Studio Ghibli is an animation studio in Japan that has put out some of the genre's greatest movies. It also releases the soundtracks which are just as exceptional on vinyl, as is the case here with another classic from the one and only composer Joe Hisaishi, who is behind most of them. Castle In The Sky was released in 1986 and tells the story of an airship carrying orphaned girl Sheeta that is attacked by a gang who seeks Sheeta's necklace. The drama and emotion of the movie were perfectly captured by this glorious soundtrack which is a perfectly fitting one for what many Japanese people have voted as one of the best-ever anime films.

This is a first ever vinyl release for 'Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea', which is another from legendary composer Joe Hisaishi. Review: Joe Hisiashi's original scores for almost every Studio Ghibli anime film are being released on vinyl in quick succession. It should have been taken as a given that the most ubiquitous of them all, Spirited Away, would now land in our mitts. From its emotional piano waltzes to its weighty string passages, it would be difficult to guess that wyvernal dragons, masked spirits and steamroom spider demons exist among the characters of this historic colossus of a film. It goes to show that Hisiashi's fandom is well-deserved, effortlessly showing off his penchant for combining surrealism with melancholy.

Review: Studio Ghibli are still reissuing the entire back catalog of their original scores by in-house composer Joe Hisiashi. Having made it through all their most conspicuous greats (Spirited Away, Princess Kaguya et al.), we now land on the lesser-known great Porco Rosso. The film is an enduring example of the animation studio's early obsession with aircraft and adventure, blending elements of fantasy and realism through such ingenious ideas as air piracy and an anthropomorphic pig starring as the main character. Hisiashi's score for the film is fittingly emotive as ever, drawing on blue, jazzy cinematics and noir swells.

Review: Studio Ghibli's entire series of scores reissues continues with this new one of the OST for The Wind Rises. One of few, if the only biographical Ghibli film out there, the sublime anime tells the story of the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the designer of the first ever low-wing monoplane flighter aircraft to enter service in war. Noted for its emotional heaviness (perhaps even more so than many of Ghibli's more surreal works), this is an effect markedly achieved by in-house composer Joe Hisiashi, whose simple statement of just eight songs hears him make use of tremolo'ing strings, accordions, symphonic structures and sad string plods.

Review: Joe Hisaishi, and Studio Ghibli, need no introduction. A partnership made in heaven, Hisaishi is a huge reason why Ghibli has become a household name internationally in a career well into its fourth decade. The Studio Ghibli movies have been welcomed into people's hearts and all-time best lists, throughout the years ever since 1984 and the release of 'Nausica of the Valley of the Wind'. Hisaishi as a composer and storyteller is unmatched, creating the most memorable soundtracks ever created, and it is fitting that his varied and decorated career has been receiving the premium vinyl treatment recently.
The latest in this vinyl pressing process is 2013's 'The Tale of the Princess Kaguya', based on the Japanese Heian period tale of Taketori Monogatari (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter). 37 tracks spanning 52 minutes paint such a vivid picture of the story of the movie it's as if you can see the hand-drawn frames in your mind as the short, masterful orchestration blends into one another. Pressed on two clear pink pieces of vinyl, referencing the pink garb Kaguya wears in the movie, this record is a must-have for Ghibli fans.

Review: Howl's Moving Castle is one of the more surreal films in Studio Ghibili's towering filmography, boasting such fantastical characters as a talking fireplace, a hagraven, a half-dreamboat-half-avian love interest, and of course, a giant moving castle. What is gained as the moral of the story is left largely down to the viewer; such a self-interpretive outlook is of course a mood that is provided above all by the film's soundtrack by the legendary in-house composer for all of Ghibili's films, Joe Hisiashi. With pieces ranging from soaring uplifters to intense edge-of-your-seaters, not to mention the famous solo piano piece 'Merry-Go-Round', this is a masterclass in bringing out boundless emotion in an otherwise free-associative genre.

Review: It is at this point a given that every Joe Hisiashi / Studio Ghibli soundtrack should land on our doorsteps. Hayao Miyazaki's latest film, The Boy And The Heron, is the very latest anime fantasy film to be released through the esteemed film franchise; described as a 'big, fantastical film', it follows a boy named Mahito Maki who moves to the countryside after his mother's death, discovers an abandoned tower near his new home, and enters a fantastical world with a talking grey heron. Whereas many of Hisiashi's other soundtracks deal in wide variegations of whimsy and heart-warmth, The Boy And The Heron skews purely to the latter, working in the bare but endlessly affecting mode of solo piano, and evoking the lonely but ultimately revelatory internal process that occurs during grief. Befitting of Miyazaki's controversial decision for the film not to pander to audiences or spell out meanings, so too does Hisiashi's contribution find reams of expression in a spare, single instrument.

Review: The beautiful music of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata's Studio Ghibli films is explored and showcased on this new album from Joe Hisaishi. It is based on the official piano score of the original composer of those films with pianist and Steinway and Sons Artist Nicolas Horvath playing them all. He is known for his interpretations of the works of the likes of Philip Glass, Franz Liszt, Claude Debussy and Eric Satie and this is a complete overview of the work of the famous animation studio. The vinyl edition has 24 tracks on two slabs of wax house in a lovely gatefold sleeve.

Review: Joe Hisiashi's incredible career as the scorer for all of Studio Ghibli's animated films (among other endeavours) has lent him an almost godlike status in the world of film music composition. Now, what better way to celebrate is there than to have him stop by for a unique 'versions' release of all the main themes from his scored films, and release them on a well-known indie label? A Symphonic Celebration hears Hisiashi revisit and recompose all the main themes from the likes of The Wind Rises, Mononoke and Spirited Away, putting fresh ears on his spirited, lifelong collaboration with director Hayao Miyazaki.
