The Sun Is On Fire (Gilb'r Fire dub)
Review: The always debonair Versatile present this Gallic dust up of epic proportions, serving up the first single from the debut album by Aladdin. If you've not checked the LP yet, "The Sun Is On Fire" is a perfect demonstration of the fuzzed out new wave sound that streams throughout. This twelve is all about the remixes however, with both I:Cube and Bot'Ox on hand with the former's take on "Mass Confusion" revelatory! We're big fans of I:Cube here but would never have guessed he would deliver the driving, psychedelic, motorik goth disco monster that you just picture Sir Weatherall destroying a Dalston basement with. In contrast, Bot'Ox draw on the darker undercurrents of the same track for a rubbery, analogue electro noir refix that builds expertly.

Find Myself (dub mix)
Review: First single from the upcoming, highly rated album by Phil Asher (aka Focus). This uniquely gifted musician and DJ who has been one of the most prolific UK producer soloists and with his Restless Soul family gives another demonstration of his versatility. The A-side features the classic Restless Soul vibe, a deep vocal house track worthy of Ron Trent or Osunlade. Whereas "Spaceship" on the B-side is a hot London mix up: dub, reggae toasting and break-beat intertwine naturally on this mesmerizing track as if both Jon Cutler and Maurice Fulton were behind the decks.

Remembering Mr K Alexi Shelby
Spaghettidisco
Review: The Cave Bear Cult is a new producer on Versatile coming from Berlin with his first release, "Keep On Keepin' On". Behind this mysterious moniker we find Jorg Ehlert, who discovered electronic music 15 years ago through labels and artist like Basic Channel, Axis, UR, Carl Craig and Dance Mania etc. The a-side start with the real floor filler, "Keep on Keepin' On". After a deep intro this track gets huge with its hypnotic synth. "Catch The Worm" continues in the house vein, but with a nu disco touch. A perfect link between all NYC producers, from Mr V and Masters At Work to Metro Area. "Remembering Mr K Alexi Shelby" sounds like a perfect tribute to all Chicago masters while with "Spaghettidisco" the Cave Bear Cult get back to the 80's with a warm Italo track.

Review: "Les Vampires" was a series of 10 silent film episodes by French director Louis Feuillade. Almost banned upon it's initial release in 1915, the film became a huge success, influencing Fritz Lang for Dr Mabuse among others. for the DVD release Gaumont asked Chateau Flight to do a 40 minutes soundtrack which is presented here as a CD. It combines the synthetique influences of I:CUBE ( Kraftwerk, Maurizio, Steve Reich etc ) with the hypnosis of krautrock and the plentifulness of psychedelic music. a perfect companion to the phantasmagorial and pre-surrealism picture, the music beautifully bridges the gap between experimental movie and electronic music.

Chichi Devils
Review: The Chateau Flight duo of I:Cube and Gilb'r pull a Richie Havens on "Chichi Devils" and go back to their roots referencing early Chicago house and the latter days of the cold wave movement with resolutely impressive results. Currently finding favour in the peak time sets of Mr Erol Alkan, "Chichi Devils" delights with a raucously raw approach to production, eschewing any attempts at polishing up the sound. A burning synth stab wrapped around the singular thud of a kick drum is the core thrust around which subtle floating sonics bubble away deep in the mix, whilst metallic bass textures add the requisite menace. Magnifique!

Review: French outfit Chateau Flight have spent two years in the studio making music, playing around and experimenting and now the fruits of that work are presented on this new album La Folie Studio. It is full of the sound of analogue machines conversing and the artists themselves speaking through their darkened basslines or eerie pads. Occult worlds are crafted, ambient soundscapes are cooked up and leftfield cosmic explorations occur throughout a journeying album full of a wide range of emotions. This lovely record features guests on the odd track such as Johnny Nash on guitar, Cosmic Neman mumbling on 'Mange', John Cravache playing 'his special organ" and Bony Bikaye singing on 'Esika Molimo Ezali'. It's an occult world of left of centre sound that will keep you coming back for more.

Persian Surgery
Desert Of Ice
Review: Versatile offer something a little different from the norm here, as they present the results of a collaboration between label regulars Chateau Flight and French ensemble Le Cabaret Contemporain, who came together to record two live covers of pieces by minimalist composer Terry Riley. Recorded in the Vogue Studio in Paris, both "Persian Surgery" and "Desert Of Ice" were recorded in a single live take, and capture the hypnotic quality of Riley's originals whilst adding contemporary electronics which straddle the line between the dancefloor and the experimental realm. Surprisingly good stuff.

Review: This is a significant release for Versatile Records. It marks up a century of releases - in their 20th year, no less - and has been described by founder Gilb'R as "probably our oddest release yet". It's certainly eccentric. The album was produced by I:Cube for school friend Cravache, whose dada-inspired poetry and spoken ramblings are dotted throughout the LP. Musically, it's deliciously wayward, offering up a mix of soundscapes - some beguiling and ambient, others exotic and percussion heavy - Tom Waits-inspired fuzz-rock, and tactile synth-pop. It's really rather good, and sounds like the sort of record collectors will be hunting for in 20 or 30 years time.

Review: Killer hookup between Versatile and Sex Tags bosses! In Versatile's own words... "We booked DJ Sotofett a few months ago for a Versatile Party at Rex Club. He decided to stay in Paris a bit more, to work with Gilb-R in the Versatile studio. And here's the result! They jammed with Zombie Zombie, recording the infamous bongos of Cosmic Neman and the modular synths and saxophone of Etienne Jaumet. Then each of them took the parts and did a version on his own." The two cuts here are the first of several planned releases with B Side "Foliage (808 Stax mix)" the standout jammer here!

Review: One of the many highlights of Versatile's output last year was Concrete Guajiro, a 12" hookup between label boss Gilb'R and his Sex Tags counterpart DJ Sotofett that was the end result of some extended time together in the former's Paris studio. It's great to see the pair collaborating again on another record for Versatile and the results sound just as impressive! The pair once again took an impromptu approach to both "Cobra" and "Plantehaelvete" with one recording the track, and the other arranging on the fly. The end product is a perfect match of Versatile's finely cultured flair and Sex Tags unpredictable energy.

Approaching Kether (7:48)
Review: We might be wrong but Le Maitre Des Illusions could be the first solo 12" from Gilb'r since 1997! Seeing as he's been busy collaborating with I:Cube on the long running Chateau Flight and more recently on several 12"s with DJ Sotofett, not to mention overseeing the supreme Versatile Records, we can forgive him. And Le Maitre Des Illusions is a fine record for any self-respecting DJ to have in their arsenal, with the title track a supple, gliding house cut blessed with warm, seductive xylophone touches. It's the musical equivalent of a deep rub massage on the dancefloor. "Approaching Kether" is a more downbeat affair, the sort of cut you'd hear in a Brian Not Brian mixtape and spend hours tracking down. Nice moves Monsieur Cohen!

Review: The brilliant I:Cube album arrives on double vinyl! !"M" Megamix sees I:Cube show himself to be a master of alluring grooves, and he uses that gift to its full potential here. The Frenchman's lack of pretension is one of his greatest strengths; the I:Cube way is a direct and satisfying one. At no point is this LP cheesy or hackneyed, but it never tries to be too clever for its own good. "M" Megamix is a triumphant statement of what a dance music album should feel like. It might not be a comprehensive answer, but it certainly puts paid to all those "collection of singles" efforts out there. One of the year's best LPs - don't miss the chance to grab it on wax.

Review: For these Cubo Live Sessions, I:Cube hooked up his machines and went off the deep end on an unrestricted improvised tip. The resulting recordings have been cut up into the four tracks presented here and they all convey a certain sense of freedom and natural evolution. They also happen to be damn good club tunes. There is slow and snaking acid on 'Session 4', tense bas riffs and trippy keys on 'Session 5' and wonky machine malfunctions on 'Session 6' that are tied to deep bass. A slow motion electro-funk workout brings the EP to a close in fantastic fashion with 'Session 7.'

Review: Before the pandemic struck, Versatile Records veteran Nicolas Chaix was working on a new improvised I:Cube live show to be taken on the road this summer. Sadly, events put paid to the long-serving producer's plans, so instead he sat down with the same hardware set-up and recorded some improvised workouts. It's those - or at least some of them, a second volume may appear in future - that form the backbone of Cubo Live Sessions. In typical fashion, 14-minute A-side 'Session 1' is formidably psychedelic, with Chaix peppering a jacking hardware groove with echoing, alien-sounding riffs, brooding pads and hallucinatory TB-303 motifs. He gets extra aggressive on fiendishly trippy and growling B-side opener 'Session 2', while 'Session 3' is a creepy, slow motion acid delight.

Review: There's always some magic in the air when you receive and start to unwrap a new I:Cube release. One of the lesser sung but undisputed legends of the French electronic, house and dance music landscape, his rise through the Parisian underground in the mid-late 1990s has informed a stylistic diversity throughout his oeuvre, and in his club sets, meaning you could be about to hear almost anything, but it's definitely going to be amazing. That's certainly true of studio album seven (under the I:Cube solo moniker). Eye Cube is another trippy triumph, calling at pitstops like the beguiling downbeat synth jazz dream of 'Kaszio Plus 1', the heavy, immersive and slightly shamanic tones of 'La Grotte Aux Fees', and the raw, Silver Apples-esque hypnotic dance floor business of 'Vantableu', among other destinations. A gripping ride we implore you to take.

Acid Tablet
Un Proton Pour Toi, Un Neutron Pour Moi
Danse De Saint Guy
Review: After his former album "Live At The Planetarium", I:Cube left the stars to come back on our good old Earth with his new single "Acid Tablet" EP. The two first tracks are the product of studio tests. The kind of tracks that come intuitively after a long day in the studio listening to the same loop, or after an all-nighter DJ set, when you are over satiated with electronic beats. The first one, "Acid Tablet" is a real acidulated saraband: somehow it sounds always the same but gets better and better as the Cube pulls his subtle dancefloor tricks. Cosmic choirs that slowly rise from the mists of the horizon, a hypnotic beat and the right break. A record that should be played with caution, unless you are seeking hypnotic control and spiritual influence over the innocent party goers. "Un Proton Pour Toi, Un Neutron Pour Moi" starts off with a tenacious acid loop that remains through the entire track. The right material to drive the dancers bezerk in the most vicious way. This track is a one shot studio session recorded on CD! "Danse De St Guy" proves that with I:Cube, there’s no B-side: a most improbable track that sounds like some over pitched ska recorded in Cuba with spooky choirs remindful of Diaro Argentos Giallo. By the way, the syndrome of St Guy (or Huntington’s Chorea) is an illness that impairs the nervous system and provokes uncontrolled movements of all members. That's all we can wish you when you listen to the track.

Pazuzu
Review: I:Cube doesn't fit into any boxes. One of the main pieces of the Versatile puzzle - the name of the label couldn't describe his style in a better way. After the 'Archives Cubistes', old tracks which could have been new, here are some fresh cuts from I:Cube, of which some might have had a first glance of on his latest mix compilation, (with Gilb' R) 'Body Language vol.5'. Two electro-house bombs for the modern clubber. 'Prophetization', with its electro rhythms, cosmic synth notes and fat bass, is more suitable for night-time or right before the sun rises, when you're lost in space with the bright strings calling from afar and bringing hope, the light shining at the end of the tunnel. 'Pazuzu' on side b is a mixture of bleeps and atmospheric pads sustained by a housey beat, chugging along to a dubby sub bass. Perfect for those early mornings lost on the dancefloor in a state of trance.

Review: One of the most glaring misconceptions regarding I:Cube's excellent fifth album M:Megamix was its format of swiftly veering through the 26 tracks was allowing Nicolas Chaix to lazily avoid the task of actually producing full tracks. This is clearly not the case, with Chaix and Versatile choosing to release extended DJ friendly versions of the album tracks over a series of EPs, with with "YOUROCK", "Popular Electronics" and "In Alpha" featuring on this latest edition. The three tracks are a nice primer of the smorgasbord of sounds to expect on the album for those yet to indulge, with the bleep infused techy chug of "YOUROCK" complemented by the EBM thump of "Popular Electronics" and the new romantic disco glisten of "In Alpha."

Review: The Cubo Rhythm Trax 12? sees the Versatile stalwart end nearly two years of radio silence in style, with inspiration coming from Jive Rhythm Trax's Volume 2, an eight-track tape of electro first released in 1989. Named after their BPMs like the original, I:Cube's techno-take on these retro productions also come with a throbbing Pilooski edit of "Makossa Suspens" taken from the producer's "M" Megamix album from 2012, which although unrelated to Jive, provides a complimenting bonus to two jangly, metallic, tribal drum tracks.

Review: France's Versatile Records is a truly impressive label. They've been going string for over twenty years, and everything on its wonderful catalogue is worth a listen, whether you're a house fanatic or a jazz-funk head. They've been busy releasing vinyl EP's of this year's comprehensive 1996-2016 compilation, and this latest nugget forms part of the most recent years, where they've teamed up particularly closely with the likes of Sex Tags' DJ Sotofett. The opener is I:Cube's masterfully punchy and supremely executed "VVV" house bomb, followed by Sotofett's and label boss Gilb'r's "Foliages" - remixed here by Sotofett into a loose and jazzy version. I:Cube remixes John Cravache's "Le Desir De Rester Petit" on the flip under the Cubo name, the producer conjuring a dark and hypnotic tune, and Zombie Zombie make an appearance with their fuzzy electro house monster take of "Blue Monday" by New Order, entitled "The Beach". Solid.

He's at it again on "8 Regards Obliques", variously opining on the threat of nuclear war over a chugging beat ("Nuclear War"), layering jaunty Afro horns over deep space electronics ("Unity"), showcasing his deep and electronic take on jazz-house ("Theme De Yo Yo"), laying down mind-altering jazz ragas ("Spiritual"), and escorting us to some far-off galaxy (the astonishingly good "Ma Revelation Mystique").

First up is Die Wilde Jagd, a new production endeavour from Dusseldorf fixtures Sebastian Lee Philipp and Ralf Beck who call on the kraut spirits of the German city for a fine reimaginations of Jaumet's title track which sounds like Neu drenched in all manner of loving delay. Low Jack attacks the same track and his remix could not be more different, a thrilling soupy ride through the dub wasteland - such a talent this guy! Review: We've noticed that it's always a special surprise from France's Versatile, and more so in the last few years since the label has truly began to diversify into countless genres, themes, and acoustic selections. This time we have a more worldly release from Gilb'R and the rest of the crew, one which sees the label boss team up with Abu Sayah and King Ghazi for "Houran", an Eastern meditative swarmer with a deeply mystical air running through its pipes. The dance aspect comes through the remixes: Gilb'R himself adds a bundle of drums and sequenced bass to the Middle-Eastern acoustics of "Shamaleh", Versatile veteran I:Cube spins "Houran" into a brooding techno slitherer, while SEX TAGS kingpin DJ SO-PHAT reinterprets the same tune under a much stringer dose of opiates. The uncredited dub version adds extra juice to an already sublime release. So very much recommended!

The A-side is largely given over to beatless waves of warm melodies, oscillators and filters turning at a glacial pace while a healthy amount of bleeps and squiggles pass through delay units for a perfect new age meltdown excursion. On the flip side a coldwave disco edge creeps into the synth, although keeping anything as precise as a beat subdued underneath a fulsome bassline and plenty more textural decoration.

Review: Versatile's new Uprooted project, masterminded by serial curator and long-time label contributor Vidal Benjamin, has an intriguing concept. It focuses on the 'duality' of musicians who grow up in one place, then move to another and absorb that culture. The two tracks on release number one were picked by Vladimir Ikovic, who has selected a track a piece from Belgrade, the city of his birth, and Dusseldorf, his current home. On the Serbian side, he offers up 'Track 1' by Rex Ilusivii, Goran Vejvoda and Milan Mladenovic, a trippy, slow-motion slab of dubbed-out, Eno-influenced slab of post-punk experimentalism from 1984. Flip for some rough, powerful, mind-mangling proto-techno from 1981: the stylish, lo-fi and pleasingly intense 'NBKE' by CHBB. Inspired obscurities that are well worth a listen.

Review: Versatile has undergone a serious resurrection over the last few years. For a label that was once heavily rooted in France's early noughties house scene with artists like Pepe Bradock at its core, the label has now expanded and moved on to much broader musical landscapes. Zombie Zombie have already released on the label, most notably on an EP containing a dangerously abrasive DJ Sotofett re-shuffle, and they now drop an absolute stomper of an LP for DJ Gilb'r's label. Ranging from nutty, quasi-house tracks such as "La Danse Des Ombre" to more improvisational synthesizer experiments like "Le Dernier Bain" or "Chuchotements", this LP has it all. There's a prominent Eastern influence in there, too, for all you Acid Arab fans!

Review: France's Zombie Zombie are perhaps the most representative outfit of Versatile's wet and wild discography, and the duo have served up some real fire power on the label over the years. Two years on from their last album, Etienne Jaumet and Cosmic Neman return with a new full-length offering that originated as a soundtrack to Elsa Guerin and Martin Palisse's abstract Slow Futur juggling performance. "Hyperspace" opens with a soft-spoken tribal groove, a sublimely hazy and dubbed-out opener to let those synths warm up their muscles before the electro-leaning buzzes and low-ends of the quirky space-house jam that is "Slow Futur". "Blue Screen" is as majestic and hollow as it is cosmic, and its airy groove made of blocky synth rolls is mightily refreshing, while "Extra Life" goes back to an 80's flex thanks to its metallic drum pattern and deep, far-reaching synths. A glorious return to action from the cosmic brothers!
