Review: Appearing as both a standard edition and purple-coloured 'Nightmare Edition' - going for a trademark 'corona effect' with variant artwork - Alt-J here present their most emotionally harrowing and difficult album yet, dealing directly with a series of traumatic experiences experienced by the band's members both in childhood and over the course of the recent pandemic. Hooting, flatuing and honking comes the lead single 'U&ME', in which Joe Newman sings of personal oppression and stress - "pressing down on my face" - to the tune of woodblocks, metal pangs and strong bass licks. Watch out for this Blood Records exclusive edition.

Review: 2012 feels like a very long way back indeed. Nevertheless, we still remember when An Awesome Wave dropped and took the UK, and later a good chunk of Europe, by storm. Alt-J's debut album remains a call to arms for outsiders to take on the mainstream, and a case of setting out your stall to show exactly what you're made of, and how much business you mean.

Straddling folktronica, electronic pop, art rock, and indie, while merging genres and distancing oneself from standard tropes is in itself nothing new, it's the elements that were picked to stay, and those that got removed from each of the styles that made this stand out. The result is a complex, innovative mix that stops short of oppressive intellectualism, and instead just sounds really original.

Review: Australian folk-indie-pop set Angus & Julia Stone, appropriately led by brother and sister Angus and Julia Stone, have been making waves Down Under for almost 20 years now. One listen to their output is enough to convince you they're a cut well above the rest, and the panel charged with deciding on the ARIA Awards obviously agree. They've now won lots, and received nominations for countless more.
Life Is Strange certainly reflects their oeuvre quite accurately. Somewhere between contemporary country, blissful indie and romantic, soft and sweet artsy indie, the project itself also reflects their forward-thinking attitude, with this one of a growing number of video game scores that are actually albums in themselves, rather than the kind of straight up soundtracks we're mostly used to.

The Drugs Don't Work (5:37)
Review: It's been three whole years since we last encountered a new album from the man like Richard Ashcroft. The guy who once told us how the drugs no longer worked, only to then explain how lucky he was. In many ways, Acoustic Hymns Vol.1 is an extension of all that, a record that has come along at a time when he's clearly ready to reflect on the heady days of the Britpop and UK indie explosion detonated in the 1990s.

Whether you'd call this album a covers collection or original, new work is definitely down to opinion. Ashcroft has opted to turn his hand back to tracks released with his seminal band The Verve, and a few of his own solo bits, only reimagined and reappropriated. The latter word is the most accurate, though. Here genuinely new life is breathed back into the likes of 'Bittersweet Symphony', which, considering the scale of that particular hit, is no mean feat.

Review: Melbourne funk and soul talents The Bamboos have now been blazing their own trail for almost a quarter of a century. This Is How You Do It makes their 11th studio album and shows the nine piece collective still has plenty to say for itself. Although at times this hints at a new direction, the album also bares all the hallmarks fans have come to love and expect from the group with Lance Ferguson's soulful production and effortless groove paired with the potent vocals of Kylie Auldist. Guest MCs from the US (Ozay Moore and Ohmega Watts) feature as do some boogie and disco tinged singles like 'Ex-Files'.

Review: Iconic English rock band Black Sabbath's third studio album Master of Reality gets the full treatment for this year's Record Store Day. Pressed up on nice purple vinyl with an embossed sleeve in limited quantities, it was released on 21 July 1971 by Vertigo Records. Weirdly, at the time, the album only got a lukewarm reception from critics. Over the years though, that perception has changed and now it is often considered one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. If sales are anything to go by, that must be true, as it went double platinum and sold over two million copies.

Review: RECOMMENDED
How can heavy metal-ers not get excited about this one? While sporting a pretty serious price tag, this Super Deluxe edition of Black Sabbath's seminal fourth album is certainly one for the collectors, who will delight in the 11 additional studio recordings featured in the huge amount of bonus material here, which include snippets of studio dialogue, false starts and more rough around the edges nuances that bring the work to life.

As for the LP itself, it was something of a landmark moment in the band's journey - shifting the intensity and ferocity up at least three gears and then sticking a brick on the throttle to hold it in place. Perhaps Mojo's take on things puts it best; ""If booze and dope had helped fuel Sabbath's earlier albums, Vol. 4 is their cocaine ... Despite their spiraling addictions, musically Vol. 4 is another ambitious outing". Enough said.

Review: 1995 saw the semi-controversial release of the final Tony Martin-era Black Sabbath album Forbidden, marking their 18th full-length overall. Reuniting the 1990 Tyr-era lineup with the re-enlisting of Neil Murray on bass and Cozy Powell on drums, the project was maligned upon release on both the critic and fan sides of reception, likely stemming from the unusual choice to have Ernie C of Body Count man the desk for production duties with bandmate Ice-T even providing the spoken word segment on the opening track 'The Illusion Of Time'. While in later years, Martin would consider the project a "filler album that got the band out of the label deal, rid of the singer, and into the reunion", based off the fact that guitarist Tony Iommi would reconcile with original frontman Ozzy Osborne not long after, that still doesn't alter the fact that the original lineup reunion effort 13 wouldn't arrive for practically another two full decades. Whatever your deeply held personal beliefs, they are those out there who still fly the flag for this peculiar era from the metal pioneers, so much so that the Anno Domini 1989-1995 box set release earlier in 2024 collates all of the Martin-era albums into one definitive collection while being freshly remastered by Tony Iommi himself in perhaps an internalised effort to undo the production choices many have highlighted as a major point of contention. This limited ultra clear pressing marks the first time since the release of said box set that Iommi's remaster of Forbidden has been made available for individual purchase.

Review: Following on from 1987's The Eternal Idol and 1989's Headless Cross, the very next year of 1990 would see the third full-length from Birmingham metal gods Black Sabbath to feature vocalist Tony Martin. Instructed to tone down the direct, in-your-face nature of the previous project's satanic lyrics, Martin looked toward Norse mythology for lyrical inspiration; a decision initially bewildering to guitarist and primary songwriter Tony Iommi. With the title Tyr, named after the son of Odin and the god of single combat and heroic glory, the band sought to seek out a new sonic identity to compliment the lyrical narratives, leading to what many fans consider to be the heaviest Sabbath album to date, while some bemoan that Cosy Powell's mammoth drumming utterly eclipses all other instruments. With the release of the Anno Domini 1989-1995 box set earlier this year which collates all albums from the Tony Martin-fronted era, this marks the first time any of these LPs have ever been reissued, and now with all albums being made separately available, the newly remastered Tyr does its utmost to restrain Powell's power and amp up everything else from the grooving riffage to the quintessential keyboard sections provided by perennial fifth member Geoff Nicholls. This would also be the last time this lineup would record together until 1995's Forbidden.

Review: Originally released in 1989, Headless Cross would serve as the second Tony Martin-era album from Birmingham metal pioneers Black Sabbath, following on from The Eternal Idol. Notably increasing the occult and satanic aspects to higher degrees than ever before, many heralded the work as a true return to form following the hard rock-centric turn of their latter material with Ozzy or throughout the majority of their Ronnie James Dio fronted run. With hefty, macabre riffage cloaked (and daggered) in shrouds of sonic gloom, the project would be the first to feature drummer Cozy Powell, while being their only full-length with session bassist Laurence Cottle. Marking the dawn of their deal with I.R.S. upon becoming disillusioned with the big major record labels, this criminally overlooked era of the band finally received its flowers in early 2024 with the release of the Anno Domini 1989-1995 box set which collates all the Tony Martin albums onto one fully remastered box set for many of the titles' first time ever made available on wax. This pressing offers the same updated, newly revitalised version, now being individually distributed.

Review: 1975's Black Sabbath album, Sabotage, was written at a time when the band were caught up in an ongoing legal battle with their former manager. That is what gave the album its title and no doubt fuelled some of the more abrasive and angry tracks. The newly remastered reissue is now paired with a complete live show that was recorded during the band's 1975 tour. Of the 16 tracks, 13 have never before been released. As well as a special new booklet with further fan delights, two extra tracks feature on a bonus 7" with artwork that replicates a rare Japanese version of the single.

Review: Alpha Games is the sixth studio album from perennial millennial indie heroes Bloc Party. It's been six years since their last record, Hymns, so what has happened to Kele Okereke's band in that time? Notably, the line-up now features Justin Harris and Louise Bartle and this is the first record they had a direct influence on the songwriting. Listening to lead single 'Traps', there's a fierce urgency which positively leaps out of the speakers. The rhythm section rushes, and Okereke cavorts across the top with a theatrical performance which shows off his range perfectly. There's no doubt they'll be lighting up indie dancefloors and festivals alike as they ride the energy of this album into the great wide world this summer.

Review: Swedish-American rockers Blues Pills really don't do things other than on their terms. Birthdays is album number four, and sees the band once again returning to a mainstream rock sound that is very much them. Chart-worthy, but perhaps not quite right in terms of where today's big saleable sounds are, it unashamedly throws caution at the wind and goes all out on everything from emotional quality to musicality. In the end, you've got riffs that wouldn't sound out of place on a Bon Jovi record, vocals that nod to the likes of Pink and Lady Gaga at various points, and an overall feeling that these guys have been doing their business a lot longer than they have. If anyone is looking for where the late-1990s guitar-pop-rock sound is, then we've found it.

Review: Swiss extreme metal pioneers, Celtic Frost, are arguably one of the most quintessential acts of the late 80s scene, who along with the likes of Venom and Bathory, managed to usher in a grim era of the most challenging, abrasive, occult-inspired variety. The Danse Macabre boxset serves as a time capsule of the band's formative years, spanning their early works from 1984 to 1987, including the seminal full-lengths, 'To Mega Therion', and, 'Into The Pandemonium', along with a slew of their early EPs, including, 'Morbid Tales', 'Emperor's Return', and, 'Tragic Serenades'. Complete with glow in the dark vinyl, an additional 7", cassette, as well as miscellanea including a badge, patch, poster, and the 40-page book, 'A Morbid Tale', this is fan service done right, and a restorative gem of the band's early, glorious, evil reign.

Review: Originally released in 1984, the debut EP from Swiss extreme metal pioneers, Celtic Frost, ushered in an entirely new era of malevolence, theatricality and abrasion to a genre in dire need of macabre redirection. Morbid Tales introduced many to the more occult musings the metal scene could ponder, while their hyper-aggressive re-imagining of thrash riffage cast a desolate shadow over the jovial spirit many initially brought to the forefront. Replacing tattered jeans and leather jackets with corpsepaint, and a stoneface seriousness to their delivery, it's little wonder how much of the developing black and death metal scenes would (and continue to) be shaped by this first collection, almost four decades on.

Review: Following their early slew of EPs that would slowly begin to reshape the modern metal landscape, it was 1985's full-length debut, To Mega Therion, that would immortalise Swiss extreme metal provocateurs, Celtic Frost, as the macabre saviours of a scene unaware of the perils that awaited it. Credited alongside Venom's aptly titled, 'Black Metal', as the true genesis of a scene and formula still not altered too greatly in the near four decades since inception, it's little wonder how many classic acts from Mayhem to Darkthrone cite the band, and this project in particular, as an integral influence. Sporting some of the literal greatest extreme metal cuts to ever grace tortured ears, such as, 'The Usurper', and the twisted epic, 'Circle Of The Tyrants', along with the iconic H.R. Giger drawn artwork, this classic can be traced back from the vast majority of black, death, doom and almost any other horrific subgenre of metallic origin.

It has been on hiatus for six years after amassing more than a billion streams before now. On this new album he set out to make music that just felt good, and he has succeeded. Hotel Surrender is playful electronica with swaggering bass, odd sound sources and catchy grooves. Subtle melodies and well deployed vocals range from yearning to loved up. 'I Must Be Stupid' is a gorgeous lullaby, 'It's Not You' is carefree summer pop and 'In Too Far' is downbeat bliss. A grand return.

Review: Dance music stars don't come much bigger or more iconic than Carl Cox. The big man with the big smile and famous gap in his teeth has been at the cutting edge for decades. He plays all across the spectrum with high energy and a really infectious style. Now the legend returns with his first album in over a decade and it comes on BMG. It was written over the last two years at his home studio in Melbourne and takes his sound to a whole new level. It is also being played live by Carl on the road right now.

Review: Folk-rock legend David Crosby was very nearly 80 when he announced his latest sol album last summer. For Free was a highly anticipated affair and an eight solo album in his long career, his third with BMG after critically-praised 2017 effort Sky Trails and Here If You Listen a year later. This tie out he lays down 10 strong tracks with some powerful collaborations. The title track is a Joni Mitchell cover - Crosby takes off 'For Free' from Joni's 1970 LP Ladies of the Canyon with the help of multi-Grammy Award-winning artist Sarah Jarosz. Crosby's son James Raymond was the producer of the record, and it is another great one.

Review: The first definitive British punk album, Damned Damned Damned, would serve as the arrival of a new form of audible angst, that over four decades later has still managed to maintain its bite and snarl. Originally released on Stiff Records in 1977, National Album Day 2022 has insisted on bringing this highly influential classic to life in a new pressing; teeming with energy, wit and enough proto-genre bending to remind all why The Damned are still an integral aspect of any discussion regarding UK punk and alternative music nearly a half century on.

Review: It's been 17 years since Danger Mouse's last hip-hop album - the epic collaboration with the late great MF Doom. For the first time since 2005, we have a new one, Cheat Codes, to get stuck into following collabs with Daniele Lupi and Karen O and some production work with Gnarls Barkley and Gorillaz. It is a triumph, too, with tough beats uplifting while the rapper lays down endless bars that are free for choruses. It is a mix of the new school and the old school that is utterly, typically, intoxicating.

Review: Originally released in 2012 and serving as the sequel to 2000's The Very Beast Of Dio greatest hits compilation which boasted choice cuts from the metal/rock icon's first six studio albums and live EP, Vol. 2 picks up right where its predecessor left off, covering the final four of the ten Dio full-lengths - Angry Machines (1996), Magica (2000), Killing The Dragon (2002), and Master Of The Moon (2004). Naturally devoid of peak prowess anthems such as 'Holy Diver', this collection is for the completionists, die-hards and those who actually paid enough attention throughout the years to mark the endearing amount of emotion and care that went into all of the output Ronnie James Dio would put his name on, all the way up his final years.

Review: Doing exactly what is says on the tin, Dio At Donnington '87', is a live album from the former Black Sabbath frontman's solo venture, recorded during his iconic Monsters Of Rock (now known as Download) festival performance in 1987. Touring the acclaimed fourth Dio full-length, Dream Evil at the time; the set is peppered with choice album cuts such as, 'Naked In The Rain', and, 'All The Fools Sailed Away', as well as the thunderous title-track. Ample room is still provided for the essentials, with anthems like 'Heaven & Hell', the obligatory, 'Holy Diver', and the momentous closing rendition of, 'Rainbow In The Dark', utterly stealing the show. Allow yourself to be transported back to the golden age of classic metal and relive a truly legendary performance from a one and only.

Review: The ninth full-length from Dio still feels like a recent contribution to the former Black Sabbath frontman's expansive canon, even though we find ourselves celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The first project to feature Whitesnake alumni Doug Aldrich on lead guitar, who would subsequently return for 2004's, 'Master Of The Moon'; Ronnie James Dio would handle production duties himself, while penning a surrealist fantasy vision-quest analysing our increasing reliance on technology through metaphorical encounters with dragons. The project is also notable for its lead single, 'Push', which featured self-professed Dio worshippers, Tenacious D, in the hit music video.

Review: DMA's recorded this gig at London's iconic Brixton Academy after finishing a tour supporting Liam Gallagher. A fitting team, despite hailing from the other side of the world, the Sydney, Australia three-piece clearly call on Manchester's fertile 1990s booze-soaked indie rock days as a point of reference, Timmy O'Dell's swaggered vocal delivery even managing to almost sound like Oasis in full swing at times.

None of which is a bad thing, and in an age wherein the up-front, no-nonsense, euphoric but reflective, observational and rousing guitars of the pre-millennium age are scarce, listening to a new band, with fresh material, mastering that seemingly forgotten lagered-up craft is genuinely refreshing. Thankfully, the energy of DMA's live also comes across on record, resulting in a life-affirming and invigorating listen and a record that's a fitting way to capture one of the last performances at the Academy before the pandemic hit

It is a real disco jewel that gets this welcome reissue at the hands of BMG. It comes on limited light green vinyl and when it was first put out on the Salsoul label it hit the Top 40 of the US R&B chart. The title track climbed all the way to number two and other singles such as 'Everyman (Has to Carry His Own Weight)' and 'My Love Is Free' are also enduring dance floor gems. The group's tip top cover of the Four Tops 'Baby I Need Your Loving' is also an album highlight.

It was a broad stylistic work with a wide range of influences from pub rock to funk, disco and early rock and roll as well as British hall music. Most of the tunes are love songs with plenty of evocative character stories and tales of the working class folk of London's East End. It was often thought by fans to be the standout album of Dury's career.

Review: Liverpool's legendary Echo & The Bunnymen add to their 30-plus years of service to music with a new album, of sorts, that in fact delivers two new compositions and 13 other songs plucked from their vast and expansive catalog. Long-time fans will no doubt be pleased to hear the new beatless tinges given to their 1984 classic "Seven Seas", while of course the album is a perfect diving point for new audience to come to grips with the band too. Take, for example, the gnarlyish drawl of "Nothing Lasts Forever" that helps offset the Bowie-like tendencies heard in numbers like "Lips like Sugar" and "The Somnambulist". Sounds like a cliche, but seriously, still as good as it ever was.

Review: It had been five years since fans had received any new, original material from Marianne Faithful by the time Vagabond Ways landed, and it's safe to say the record was worth the wait. Containing both her own work, and re-interpretations of songs by the likes of Roger Waters, Elton John, and Leonard Cohen, if the track list is impressive then the delivery is astounding.

Continuing in her neo-cabaret persona, Vagabond Ways is a theatrical and dramatic piece of work to say the least. Packed with emotion and stage presence, to call this rock would be reductive. More a journey into a kind of surreal, experimental pop realm that's filled with mystery, beauty, and unease, this is an excellent example of how a record can invoke incredibly vivid imagery of your own devising.

Maxi Jazz, the famous frontman, doesn't feature, but Sister Bliss does a fine job of soulful house, squelchy techno and plenty on between. It is a record chock full of collaborations with the likes of Suzie Breaks and Damien Jurado and Nathan Ball and will keep old ravers happy as well as entice some new ones to a more refined sound. Review: American rock band Garbage have done well to stand the test of time. Their seventh studio album has been influenced by numerology and things such as the seven virtues, the seven sorrows, and the seven deadly sins. It is a ferocious record that chews up and spits out issues of capitalism, love, loss and grief, and is, says frontwoman Shirley Manson, "our way of trying to make sense of how fucking nuts the world is and the astounding chaos we find ourselves in." Bold, confrontational and powerful, this is one of the band's most socially and politically aware albums.

Remastered for the modern audiophile inside all of us, there's never been a more ample opportunity to discover some of the more traditional, dare we say, obvious choices such as, 'He's A Woman - She's A Man' (Scorpions), or, 'From Out Of Nowhere' (Faith No More), and audibly witness them at odds with the likes of the bizarre renditions of David Bowie's, 'Space Oddity', The Beatles', 'All My Loving', or perhaps most vital of all, the endlessly entertaining reimagining of 'Lay All Your Love On Me', originally by ABBA. Yes, you read that right.

It is of course bolstered by their most celebrated single, 'This Is How It Feels,' which helped to anchor the band at the heart of the vibrant and world renowned Madchester movement in the early 90s. The group put out three more fun lengths after this one and called it a day in 1995. Review: Much loved UK band and pivotal Madchester players Inspiral Carpets are having their early albums reissued this year. Their debut has already had the treatment and now it is The Beast Inside which gets pressed up on to limited translucent purple vinyl. It was the band's second studio album and came in 1991, just four years before they disbanded. Arriving on Mute Records it was something of a leap forward for the band. The recorded broadened the band's sound with plenty of heavy beats and e-doused grooves as well as some nods to 60s aesthetics.

Review: Originally released in 2005, and considered to be the second solo full-length from nine-fingered metal guitar pioneer Tony Iommi, Fused celebrates its 20th anniversary just a tad early with these revitalised remasters pressed to wax for the first time ever. Written in collaboration with vocalist/bassist Glenn Hughes (former Black Sabbath frontman during the mid-80s who would assume vocal duties on 1986's Seventh Star; released under the band moniker but long perceived as Iommi's first solitary creative endeavour), and legendary session drummer Kenny Aronoff (The Smashing Pumpkins, Bob Seger, Willie Nelson, John Fogerty, Bon Jovi etc), this limited translucent cobalt blue vinyl 2xLP pressing comes complete with three sporadically dispersed bonus cuts finally locked down onto own complete home.

Review: You have to hand it to Japan - the English new wave band, not the country. Despite only having released two (admittedly very successful) albums before 1979's Quiet Life, the group really knew what they wanted by this point. So much so they enlisted the legendary disco creator Giorgio Moroder to produce standalone single 'Life In Toyko', setting out a new stylistic blueprint moving from glam rock to synth, only to drop the revered producer before hitting the studio to make this record.

In the end that duty fell on Paul Hunter (Roxy Music, Slade) and Simon Robert Napier-Bell (Ultravox, Marc Bolan), and the result was a Gold record selling well over 100,000 copies upon release. Now forming the centrepiece for this epic special edition box set, which boasts a host of remixes, live versions and Moroder's take on 'Life In Tokyo', you'd be crazy to miss out.

Review: Legendary co-lead vocalist of punk rock band The Clash Joe Strummer had plenty of success when he went solo. This special album is a live recording of one of his shows at Music Millenium, an indie store in Portland. He played the gig in 1999 and it was an intimate set captured via a soundboard recording. Up until now it has only ever been passed around on bootleg copies but has still managed to become a revered listen amongst fans. Now you can enjoy it in all its original glory on fresh wax.

Review: American singer-songwriter and two-time Grammy Award winner Rickie Lee Jones is a real album specialist with this, Pieces of Treasure, being her fifteen overall in a career that has lasted over four decades so far. This one takes aim at the great American songbook, with ten covers all served up in ultra-smoky and seductive fashion. It finds Jones working again with Russ Titelman, the producer who was behind her 1979 self-titled debut album and the follow-up in 1981. The album was recorded over the course of just five days at Sear Sound studios in Manhattan and is one of her best of recent times.

Review: Miles Kane's fourth album came together after a chance recording session with "no frills" with psych-rock pair Sunglasses For Jaws in their Hackney studio. Taking inspiration from those collaborative hours, the record is a real joy, not least when the unexpected guest and Grammy-nominated singer Corinne Bailey Rae pops up for a duet on 'Nothing's Ever Gonna Be Good Enough'. Kane himself is full of his usual swagger and lyrically draws on the intense period of self reflection from which the record was born. Motown, soul, and original R&B all colour the tracks next to hints of glam and classic rock.

Review: Six albums in and Madness had firmly established themselves as part of the British pop firmament when they released Mad Not Mad in 1985. It's a divisive album which captures Suggs' Camden Town likely lads in a period of transition as the 80s wore on and musical styles shifted. Moving on from the chirpy ska of their early days they moved into a more polished pop sound which landed them a billing on NME's 'Greatest Albums Of All Time' just weeks after its release. With the singles 'Uncle Sam' and 'Sweetest Girl' nestled amongst some of the bands' most introspective tracks (see 'Mad Not Mad') it's an important part of the Madness legacy, handily repressed on 180 gm wax for your listening pleasure.

Review: Johnny Marr is of course best known as having been a part of The Smiths, still one of the UK's most influential and acclaimed bands. But since then he has gone on to be part of various other bands from The Cribs to Modest Mouse to The The and work with soundtrack composers like Hans Zimmer. He has also had a fine solo career which has seen three of his albums make the charts. His latest studio full length reflects his multi-faceted past and has an expansive sound that takes in all different aspects of everything he's ever done across four sides of vinyl.
