Creeping Plant EP

Creeping Plant
Unlimited Fun
Lezgo
Snake Venom
Melted
Review: According to Craigie Knowes, this label debut from rising star Fasme is full of "trax to soundtrack your voyage through time and space". It's certainly an emotive affair, with opener 'Creeping Plant' smothering a throbbing, trance style bassline and crunchy machine drums in cascading synthesiser melodies, rushing piano motifs, swirling chords and suitably psychedelic acid lines. Fasme's love of TB-303-powered techno comes to the fore on 'Unlimited Fun' (an accurate title), while 'Lezgo' doffs a cap to the more melodious and progressive end of late 1990 trance. Fasme cools things down on the flip, tiptoeing towards the chill-out room via the head-nodding beats, ambient chords and bubbly bass of 'Snake Venom', before conjuring up some stellar ambient dub in the shape of 'Melted'.

5.34 AM
Reduit
Grindelwald (Summit edit)
Review: It's early days for Jakob Panthel and his Faune alias, but he more than steps up to the plate as London label Ornate Music invite him to present his vision for immersive, techno tinged deep house. "5.34 AM" is aptly named, the undulating chord pulse at the heart of the track aiming for the woozy hour of the dance before dawn breaks through. "Reduit" is a more sprightly affair, using similar ingredients but pushing a brighter line in synths amidst the raw drums. "Grindewald" meanwhile heads out into more ambient techno territory with its plush pads and snaking arpeggios, soothing the feisty club-ready energy of the previous two tracks.

Review: Simona Faraone's label, New Interplanetary Melodies, welcomed Feel Fly for an EP that is "inspired by the ancient and mysterious Etruscan culture, whose peoples inhabited the historical-geographical region of central Italy." He hails from Italy himself of course and has written soundtracks for movies as well as great dancefloor tunes. The tracks here combine dreamy melodies with hurried breakbeats, corrugated acid techno jams and 90s post-rave house sounds that carry you on waves of blissed-out pads. It adds up to an EP that feels steeped in ancient ritual as well as having one eye on the future.

Violet Shift (Mike Schommer remix) (9:04)
Bohts' (6:21)
Violet Shift (7:40)
Review: Rolling into the spring of 2022, Mosaic turns to Berlin based Yorkshireman and co-founder of Tact Recordings, Fletcher, for Mosaic LTDX6 .

Following his impressive "Mechanical Garden" debut LP on Mosaic DTL, 'Violet Shift' focuses on Fletcher's ability to weave magic for the dancefloor with DeepChord's Mike Schommer adding a contrasting touch of class on the remix.

Title track 'Violet Shift' is a trip into the light fantastic: centring around a delicate fusion of deftly programmed beats and continuously shifting filtered chords. Brought together with muted pulses of sub bass and splashes of effects, it's a masterful exercise in restraint and a true delight with repeat listening.

Taking it the other way, Schommer's remix focuses on a four to the floor journey: adding tribal elements and tight percussion that inject more urgency into the mix. A tough but fair take, you wouldn't expect anything less.

Last but not least, the dawn chorus of 'BOHTS' eases you into the mood with a trimming of airy optimism and brushy bounce to the beats as warm chords sweep their way through.

C'mon Get Down (5:25)
Electronica (5:56)
Latenight (5:11)
Euro Pulse (5:39)
Review: We don't know much about Foley, the artist behind this EP on Mulen Records offshoot Oldivibes, but we can confirm that he/she/they has delivered something truly special. It's a nostalgic, retro-futurist affair, with the producer offering up a quartet of cuts laden with references to classic deep house and US garage. 'C'mon Get Down', with its restless bassline, bustling breakbeat house drums, spacey textures, hip-hop vocal snippets and nods to modern tech-house, sets the tone, before 'Electronica' blends early morning deep house tropes with not so subtle nods to bleep & bass and sci-fi techno. Elsewhere, 'Latenight' is a Kerri Chandler-esque bumper featuring killer organ stabs and smooth bass, while 'Euro Pulse' is a trance-inducing early morning throb-job with luscious ambient techno pads.

Bluer Than Blue (Mr G Time To Sweat remix) (8:01)
When Lightning Strikes Twice (Duncan Lost In The Moment remix) (10:06)
Review: Mr G is the sort of artist who pretty much has admiration from all quarters. He has been doing his do now for some 30 years, dancing behind the decks with his own style and laying down perfectly dubbed out rollers that make his dance floras do the same. He's prolific, too, but never lets quality levels dip. Here he appears in remix mode, flipping Duncan Forbes's 'The Next Step' with his Tears Of Gratituded dub into something quick and emotionally steamy. His Time To Sweat remix of 'Bluer Than Blue' is more minimal with grubby and dry drums and effects and hypnotic leads. Last of all, 'When Lightning Strikes Twice' (Duncan Lost In The Moment remix) locks you in a dubbed-out late-night trance.

Fatdog - "Jaffa Cakes" (6:12)
Review: Fatdog Records returns after a break, offering contributions from 3 artists new to the label - The Rutan, Tom Mc Connell and Mark Hand. FDR003 offers a development from the deep house template on the last EP, this time taking us further into deeper Detroit territories. Mark Hand offers us Drexciyan techno in the form of 'Cold Feet'. The Rutan's 'Fable' sits somewhere between Vakula and some of Henrik Schwarz's earlier dub-house experiments, while Fat Dog takes us to the murky back alleys of his mind with 'Jaffa Cakes'. Finally Tom Mc.Connell's 'Juniper' takes us into wonkier groove Rhodes stylings which rounds off the EP very nicely indeed. Mathew Jonson - "Diamond Eyes" (13:27)
Freedom Engine - "Rain In Kyoto" (11:19)
Review: Matthew Jonson's 2019 album as The Freedom Engine, A Box Full of Magic, may have been pretentiously marketed (the press releases sent to dance music media were needlessly academic), but the set itself was one of the most entertaining things he's done, in part because it saw him repurpose old sounds and craft ear-pleasing epics from live studio jams. You can hear that on this 12", which boasts one of the highlights - the '90s IDM, meditative ambient and melancholic techno fusion bliss that is 'Rain in Kyoto' - on the flipside of this 12". More club-ready is 13-minute A-side 'Diamond Eyes', a cut released under Jonson's given name that wraps bubbly lead lines and bleeping electronics around a swinging house groove and jaunty bassline.

Review: Feel Fly is the production alias of Italian DJ and producer Daniele Tomassini, co-founder of Afro Templum. He presents his second album Sacrificio which comes out on Florence-based imprint New Interplanetary Melodies, featuring six heady and atmospheric cuts in the same vein of material that's seen him release on the likes of Internasjonal, International Feel and Too Romantic. The tumbling breakbeats that underpin the celestial pads of the title track could almost pass for drum 'n' bass, while 'Hypnopedia' nails that mental strain of techno - "Sound Of Rome" style. Over on the flip, you'll be elevated to a higher state of consciousness on 'Afro Trance Amnesia' followed by the breathtaking ambient soundscape of 'Etoile Romance'.

Review: With nearly 40 years experience as a producer, having collaborated with everyone from Holger Hiller, Moritz Von Oswald and Juan Atkins among others, Swiss legend Thomas Fehlmann presents Los Lagos ('The Lakes'). It's his seventh solo full-length (and fourth for Koelsch institution Kompakt), following his Berlin inspired 2010 LP Gute Luft. The multi-talented composer and long standing member of The Orb embarked on a deep journey of soul searching while recording the album - and in the process incorporated elements of art, disco, minimalism, jazz and funk. A collection of glacial and textural dub introversions as best exemplified on "Lowenzahnzimmer" or "Morrislouis", but he also makes room for moments of pulsating hypnotic dancefloor dynamics ("Triggerism") and moments of lush ambient bliss reminiscent of his work with Dr. Alex Patterson on "Geworden".

Review: Four Tet is back with a new album of shimmering wonderment on his own Text label. As ever, it's the way that Kieran Hebden tugs at the heart strings so artfully that makes him so well-loved, and he's not holding back one iota as "Sixteen Oceans" opens up with the ineffably pretty "School". There's some advanced garage ruminations on "Baby", classic ambience on "Harpsichord", and so the eclectic and extremely soul-cleansing vibes continue across three sides of wax. In addition to this wonderful new album, Hebden has also held back the fourth side for a bunch of locked grooves so satisfying you could get lost in them all day.

Review: The last time we heard Fred P under his FP-Oner guise was for an album, the minimally named 5, which came out on Japan's powerful Mule Musiq stable. As such, FP-Oner returns with 6 for the same label, carrying a similar load of molecular deep house music coated in a distinctive sci-fi kinda feel. This is what Fred P does best; that is, constructing intricate patterns of sound and giving them a shape through house. In other words, each of these eight tunes tell a much more interesting story than the dancefloor and, instead, they force the listener to enter a world of its own, guided by airy, mystical synths and plenty of electronic manipulation. Excellent, as always, Mr P.

Review: Here's something guaranteed to ensure a rush of excitement in deep house heads everywhere: a brand new album from much-loved U.S producer Fred P. It's the first under the previously unused F.P-Oner alias, and his first studio outing since 2013's Black Jazz Chronicles set, Codes & Metaphors. Unsurprisingly, the simply titled 5 is as inspired, sumptuous and melodious as you'd expect, with gentle dub house, jazz and - in the case of the wonderful "Infinite Love" - Detroit techno influences. While much of the album is slinky, sensual and ultra-deep (see the fabulous "Visions of You" and "Sleepless in Shibuku"), there are a couple of thrillingly percussive moments to get the pulse racing, including the African-influenced tribal workout "The Realm of Possibility".

Review: During the early-to-mid 1990s, Nurmad Jusat released a string of now sought-after singles on Likemind that showcased an emotive, far-sighted take on techno that still sounds timeless all these years on. This fine collection features various recordings he made - but never released - as Nuron and Fuge back in 1993 and '94. As inspired by the techno sounds of his native UK as the far-sighted brilliance of purist Detroit techno and the dreamy soundscapes of Larry Heard, it's a genuinely brilliant collection of long-lost gems. Our picks include the subtly clonk-influenced opener 'The Coded Message', the skewed deep electro shuffle of 'Another Way', the sci-fi techno brilliance of 'Contrapoin (First Version)' and the out-there ambient soundscape that is 'Dialectic Confusion'.

Review: 'Emotive techno' eschews the term ambient techno on this new archival release from Nuron and Fugue, figureheads of the '90s subscene that took the world by storm. Lifted from archives of DAT tapes that were, as the story tends to go, inevitably found in some attic somewhere, these tracks are nostalgia-tinged jams that carry with them the hiss and saturation of 1993; but of course, stylistically, they belong in 2993. Nuron's 'Interior World' is a scratchy and restless early highlight, while Fugue's 'Contapoint' has a proto-dubsteppy angularity seeping off it.
