All Rapped Up
All Rapped Up (limited clear vinyl 7")
Cat: HDR 003. Rel: 01 Nov 21
All Rapped Up (radio version) (4:25)
Smoke Season (extended version) (5:46)
Review: This clear vinyl "45" dips into the small but perfectly formed mid '90s catalogue of Oakland duo Rappin' Ron and Ant Diddly Dog, whose take on gangsta rap was more laidback and melodfious than some of their contemporaries. 'All Rapped Up', which first surfaced as the pair's debut single in 1994, combines a luscious, laidback, jazz-funk-sampling boom-bap beat with typically descriptive, entertaining lyrics detailing life on the streets of the pair's home city. Over on the reverse you'll find original flipside 'Smoke Season', here presented in extended form. Lyrically it covers similar territory, but musically it's an unashamed G-funk workout full of rubbery bass, smooth synths and P-funk influenced motifs.

Review: This is a new, short and seriously sweet album from Oh No - Madlib's bother - who is famed for being an innovator and mad talented when it comes to the art of sampling as well as rapping and beat making. He has a rich history of exploring a wide world of source material and here it is jazz funk great Roy Ayers in the spotlight. This superb instrumental collection deconstructs the work of iconic vibraphonist and is split into two halves each with its own vibe and all constructed from the early jazz-centric realm. Good Vibes is all about light and vibrant layers beaming in the sun and Bad Vibes is more dark and murky for angrier times.

Review: Jordan Rakei is a real poster boy for the current neo-soul scene. New Zealand-born, Australia-raised artist is hugely popular here in his adopted homeland of the UK, not least because of how much great music he puts out at a regular rate. This is his fourth album in five years - third on Ninja Tune - and he's also turned out a lush entry into the Late Night Tales series. His soulful tones remain a delight on these tracks, which feature elements of dub, house, and dub as well as his aching vocals and fine songwriting. The mood is the most vulnerable yet as a result of things he learnt about himself during therapy over the last two years. Dive in deep.

Review: Aussie soul boy and soothing crooner Jordan Rakei is a profile songwriter, producer and vocalist who has put out plenty of great records in recent times. They have made him a firm festival favourite over on these shores and as such he was tapped up back in 2021 to make his entry into the esteemed Late Night Tales series. As per the MO, he takes a deep dive into his record collection to soundtrack a session back at his once the sun has gone down. It's classy and sophisticated from front to back with jazz, soul, folk, deep house and plenty of his own tracks all adding up to something beautifully escapist.

Review: Freddie Cruger was once best known as 3 Foot People but since 2007 he has done great work as Red Astaire. He is a deep digging DJ with a penuche for neo soul, downtempo, hip hop and soul drenched late night beats that ooze lush vibes. His Nuggets For The Needy series is always a treasure trove of such sounds and the third volume is one of the best yet across two slabs of vital wax. The 12 red hot cuts are influenced by classic reggae, hip hop, R&B, downtempo and dub with standouts like the out of print 'Ghetto Hell' and an unheard version of his classic 'Follow Me.'

Review: Ree-Vo is a powerhouse duo consisting of T. Relly and Andy Spaceland who have carried on the Brsotil trip hop legacy many ears after The Wild Bunch. All Welcome On Planet Ree Vo/Dial R For Ree-Vo is a new eight-track record of fine originals that also features remixes by The Bug, Dalek (Will Brooks), Surgeon and Rob Smith. These are glitchy sounds with paranoid modern production, fixing synths and hefty bass dollops beneath most cuts as well as observational bars and plenty of edgy energy.

Review: Nature's Sounds presents 'NY's Finest' from Pete Rock. Rock revolutionized rap production through ground-breaking studio wizardry. He made
remixes matter more than the original songs. He introduced dramatic, forceful horns to rap's sonic discussion. Pete Rock has notched these
achievements during his impeccable recording, producing and remixing career, one of the most distinguished in rap history and one that includes
collaborations with Nas, Common, Mary J. Blige, Ghostface Killah, Busta Rhymes, Public Enemy and Run-DMC, among many others.

Review: Pete Rock is widely hailed as one of the most important producers in hip-hop history, and with good reason. From his early groundbreaking work with CL Smooth onwards, he's brought a heavy sound steeped in the East Coast style, but with a sharp approach to production which makes his beats land crisper than most. His Petestrumentals series reaches back to 2001, when BBE deemed it necessary to shine a light on his next-level tracks. This fourth volume takes you back in on the expert touch of a grandmaster, with a clutch of productions so vibrant you never even imagine an MC riding on top.

Review: There are few beatmakers as essential and pioneering as Pete Rock. His albums often take the form of collections of his beat-strumentals and they make for compelling listening that covers a wide variety of hip-hop joints. This Record Store Day Black Friday 2022 special is another cat in port that finds the American talent gaming out on his trusty SP1200, an iconic drum machine and sampler combo that very much defined early rap and hip hop. He gets the very best out of it once more here over classic boom bap sounds, more edgy late-night beats and plenty of steamy rollers.

Review: The reissue of Pete Rock & CL Smooth's Main Ingredient reminds hip-hop heads what a timeless masterpiece it really is. The record has a sure place in hip-hop history and has since it was originally released in 1994. The album showcases the duo's famous and unparalleled chemistry, with Pete Rock's soulful production and CL Smooth's smooth lyricism blending seamlessly on tracks that continue to resonate with listeners and very much capture the essence of 90s hip-hop while still remaining relevant today. 'Sun Won't Come Out', 'The Main Ingredient', and 'Get On The Mic' all demand to be played loud and proud

Review: Jameszoo and Niels Broos are Rolrolrol and Music is their first album. They describe it as "a puttylike exercise in pop, modern jazz and electronica" and it builds on many years of working together on the likes of Brainfeeder and Alpha Pup. The whole thing is doused in vivid and vivacious synth work that brings life and colour to every groove, whether a broken beat or a future hip-hop workout, an experimental cosmic house cut or an infectious bit of boogie. Amongst the magnificent melodies are guests like Jamie Woon who bring real soul to 'Surprise', and it all makes for a playful but triumphant record of brain-cleansing electronic sound.

Review: Questlove's legendary The Roots have put out some of hip-hop's most crucial albums, with socio-political wordplay and timeless live grooves. It is those classic instrumentals that now get served up on four sides of vinyl for this limited pressing, and all have been remastered since last time. 23 years after this album first dropped, these beats are still hard to beat and range from dusty boom bap to more sunny neo-soul and plenty in between. A vital addition to any hip-hop head's collection.

Review: One of the most iconic groups of the eighties music scene was Run-DMC, no question. They blew up the world of rap with their raw, swaggering beats and impactful lyrical insights, which often came with a tag-team delivery between numerous band members. Their self-titled album remains a high water mark for the band, and the genre at large, with singles like "Rock Box" and worldwide smash "King Of Rock" still resonating today. This landmark album was the first rap full-length to achieve Gold status, and the band kept the pressure on with two even bigger follow up albums in the years after.

Review: Undoubtedly, one of the most influential groups to emerge from the eighties music scene was Run-DMC. With their bold beats and insightful lyrics delivered through a tag-team style among band members, they revolutionized rap music. Their eponymous album stands as a pinnacle not only for the band but also for the entire genre, boasting timeless singles like 'Rock Box' and the global hit 'King Of Rock'. Remarkably, this album was the first rap full-length to attain Gold status, solidifying their impact. Artists from across the diaspora have all been called upon and results in a real pool of fresh talent adding their own unique perspectives to the originals. They have put pout a wealth of sensibly titled album that remain firm favourers and always sell out. The latest to be reissued is Run The Jewels 3 on this limited edition and coloured vinyl. Review: Following the release of Jim Jarmusch movie Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai in 1999, many hip-hop heads were keen for the RZA's immaculate soundtrack - his first movie score - to get a release. It did, but only in Japan. Finally, the RZA has put that right, and now the soundtrack, which features a number of contributions from the Wu-Tang Clan, is available around the world via this new pressing. Largely warm, light and airy, much of the material mixes traditional instrumentation - electric piano, various Japanese instruments, guitar - with head-nodding hip-hop beats and the kind of obscure, Blaxploitation-era funk samples that have long been a staple of the RZA's work. It's a great set of instrumentals, with just enough forthright vocal cuts to keep things fresh.
