Review: For their latest dive into the depths of funk history, Athens of the North travels back to 1978 and the debut of John Hawes and Velma Bunch's obscure Hard Drivers project. The record initially appeared on Hawes' own short-lived imprint, and his since become a sought after 7" amongst serious collectors. "Since I Was A Little Girl" is a disco-era funk gem, with guest singer Vivian Lee providing a brilliantly confident vocal to compliment Hawes and Bunch's driving, horn-heavy backing track. On the flip you'll find original B-side "Straight Talk", a touching torch song full of harmony backing vocals, impassioned builds, and lyrics capable of melting even the stoniest of hearts.

No messin' here as Visioneers go straight for the funk jugular with two dope versions. On the A-Side a version of The Shadows classic ''Apache'' gets flipped by Visioneers remake of Johnny Pate's B-Boy bomb "Shaft In Africa". Review: Hailing from Moscow, Valique started his musical career in mid nineties as an arranger and musician in several electronic live projects, gradually shifting from raw jungle/industrial music to diverse forms of deep house, nu-jazz and funk/soul breaks. As an accomplished vibraphonist and percussionist he has recorded session work on various albums and recently recorded an entire album of classical Russian folk and war songs with nu-jazz/funk twist. Being a fan of the Freestyle label from day one, Valique took it upon himself to create two brand new tracks purposely made with the label in mind. We were so impressed we couldn't say no, making him the first Russian signing to Freestyle! Check the disco infused bumping house of "Taking Your Seat", with the tantalizing horns hammering the track into your subconscious. On the flip "Wine Or Vinegar" is more of the same, with blasting horns tied to the funkiest of basslines and a bumping groove.

Review: 'Girassol' has long been one of the hardest-to-find gems in Brazilian great Marcos Valle's vast catalogue of sun-drenched musical treats. It was initially recorded and released as a promo-only seven-inch, with copies being handed out to customers of a Brazilian supermarket chain. This, then, marks the track's first ever commercial release. In its' original form (side A), 'Girassol' is a lusciously short, soft-focus affair - a two-minute chunk of laidback, jazz-funk influenced South American boogie bliss with the kind of high production values that you'd expect from Valle during his successful post-disco period. As with the original 7", it comes backed with the slightly more elaborate 'Playback' instrumental mix, where gentle, eyes-closed saxophone solos come to the fore.

Review: And so begins a new series from Laura Vane where she explains what she can and can't move. After mountains comes lorries (with a killer buildings b-side) and after that she's going to release a picture disc explaining how she can't move those massive barrels of beer pubs use. Not really. In fact she can move a whole dancefloor with her stirring soulful tones. If you're into Alice Russell (or any Tru Thoughts output for that matter) then this double funk-up will move your jacksey from here to next week. "110%" on the B is equally as wiggle worthy.

Review: Anyone who spent the early part of this century cutting their DJ teeth in bars up and down the country will be familiar with the AV8 label that Aldo Vanucci pays homage to on "Tambou8.2". The veteran beatsmith fully demonstrates his adeptness at slicing and splicing samples together in a dizzying procession of house party favourites - perfectly poised for that drunken moment in the night when everyone around you is your best friend. Joining this on the A Side is "Do The Funky Duck" which will be familiar to either fans of early 80s disco funk or perhaps more likely A Trak and Van Helden. On the flip thou shalt enjoy a two tone skank reimagination and a think break infused take on KC & The Sunshine Band.
