Review: Having appeared on several EPs throughout the late '70s and early '80s on labels like Westbound and Capitol, most people think of Erasmus Hall as one person. Rather, they were actually a collective of artists that were given the name by grandmaster George Clinton of Parliament / P-Funk. This might not be immediately audible on the gentle waves of "Just Me & You", but the song does contain a certain air of oddity and conniving funkiness that rendered that period of disco just so damn enticing. The flip contains "Your Love Is My Desire", another gentle heart-warmer to stick on in those more intimate moments... What a delightful little 7"!

Review: Expansion is pushing the boat out for Record Store Day 2020. Chief among the label's must-check RSD releases is this 12", which offers up fresh re-edits - courtesy of an un-credited re-editor - of two sought-after cuts by late-'70s and early '80s West Coast fusionists Halo. The headline attraction is undoubtedly the fresh edit of the ultra-rare extended mix of 1981's 'Let Me Do It', a warm and groovy modern soul/boogie jam primarily known for its' familiar "let me do until you're satisfied" vocal refrain. The band's shorter original version is also included in the package, alongside a shorter re-edit of their sparkling, synth-heavy 1988 single "Life". In keeping with the more celebrated A-side, it's an energetic, life-affirming earworm.

Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Naturally Japanese jazz outfit Quasimode are an ideal remix choice. Known for their wildstyle riffage and signature switches, they've paid the utmost respect to Hammond.

Review: Northern Soul devotees have long been captivated by unreleased Motown gems, and this one may be the best yet. Written by Chester and Gary Pipkin, 'Stuck-Up' was crafted to replace Mary Wells after her departure from Motown. Although Oma Heard recorded extensively, including a duet with Marvin Gaye, she was dropped for not fitting the label's image. The song was then given to Shirley Gunter, whose 1966 version on Tangerine Records became one of the rarest Northern Soul records, often fetching over 500 quid. Recently, the original Oma Heard version surfaced on a Motown unreleased CD and has been hailed as a classic by Ian Levine. Now, for the first time, it gets released on vinyl by Motown's V.I.P. label.

Review: American singer Thelma Houston started her career in the mid 60s and waited until1977 for her biggest hit. That was of course the timeless 'Don't Leave Me This Way', which won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in that year and catapulted Thelma to global stardom. As recently as 2020, Thelma has been working with artists like British singer Morrissey' on his single Bobby, Don't You Think They Know?' but her older material will always be the best. This 7" from Expansions serves up two such soul fuelled gems.

Review: Indeed, it is sometimes not possible to stop a man in love, but that depends on what he's doing. The romanticization of the relentless male pursuit of love - "stopping at nothing to get what he wants" - was rife in the 1970s, and this was of course made manifest in all avenues of pop culture. The late soul singer Reuben Quitman Howell added to the trend with this originally 1973 release, first out on Motown, with the song pressed on both sides. Whatever your take on the song's lyrical matter, it's a jiving soul strut, replete with swooning backing vocals and swinging, finger-clicking hi-hats. It's now reissued on Expansion records, and rightfully topped up with a just-as-lovely B-side, 'When You Take Another Chance On Love'.

Review: This more than handy 7" single brings together two classic disco-era cuts from soul legend Willie Hutch. A-side "Easy Does It", which was originally featured on 1978's In Tune album, features Hutch in full-on Curtis Mayfield mode, singing passionately over a jaunty, jazz-funk influenced backing track laden with swirling strings, choral backing vocals (think Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" album) and Dexter Wansel style synthesizer solos. It's undoubtedly one of Hutch's finest moments and deserves to be in any serious soul head's collection. Flip for 1979's "Kelly Green", a sumptuous soul slow jam in which Hutch pines over a lost lover.

Review: Detroit native Bobby Hutton made history by performing on the first nationally televised Soul Train episode in 1971. His journey in music led him to record with Phillips, producing many sought after tracks.
The two tracks on this 7" were originally released back-to-back in 1974 on the ABC label. Both songs were co-written and produced by McKinley Jackson, who played a significant role in crafting hits for Lamont Dozier, Freda Payne, and The Four Tops at ABC during the early to mid-70s. Grammy Award-winning Reggie Dozier, Lamont Dozier's brother, also contributed as a co-writer. This 7" has not been reissued in 40 years, and original copies are highly prized in the UK. Northern Soul music is one of the most in-demand genres for rare 45 diggers. This is a great example.

Review: Before finding success in the disco/boogie era under the One Way alias, Al Hudson & The Soul Partners produced a string of brilliant soul jams for Atco Records. While these have long been popular amongst soul collectors, they've remained strangely under-celebrated in the dance music world at large. This collection from Expansion attempts to change that by gathering together every track from the seven singles they released for Atco between 1975 and 1976. Review: The 1973 album Piece of the Action by Bobby Hutton has been reissued on vinyl for the first time since its original release. Hailing from Detroit, Hutton began his career after winning a talent show at the 20 Grand nightclub and went on to perform on the inaugural nationally broadcast Soul Train episode in 1971. Influenced by Jackie Wilson, he transitioned from writing under his birth name, Harold Hutton, to adopting the stage name Bobby Hutton, encouraged by Billy Davis at Chess Records. Hutton's journey through labels saw him eventually land at Philips, where he created the Northern Soul classic 'Come See What's Left Of Me,' famously played at the Stafford All-Nighters in the mid-80s. With standout contributions from Patti Hamilton, Jean Plum, Mikki Farrow, and Frankie Karl. The Gary Wright-penned 'Lend A Hand,' championed by DJ Colin Curtis in 1974, remains a defining track, marking a high point in Northern Soul history.
