Review: Mr Bongo are enacting a thorough revisiting of some of the very best soul, funk, MPB and boogie gems to stud their catalogue over the years; at this rate, the tagline "back by popular demand" has become a motto. This careful pairing of mutually constitutive Hanna and Almir Ricardi tunes made up the label's 54th release. 'Daixa Radar' comes first as the initial "rediscovery" of DJ Koco, whose Brazil 45's mix was the functional tipoff. Ricardi's 'To Parado Na Tua' is a similar midtempo boogie cut, produced by the legendary duo of Lincoln Olivetti and Robson Jorge, whose singularly timbral slap-drums are to die for.

Review: Discos Martos is a new division of Rocafort Records. The imprint takes its bow here with a cultured single from soul singer Glen Anthony Henry who is originally from Los Angeles but now based in Spain. His vibe is to blend the best bits from classic soul with a modern edge that hits different. The A-side, 'Thankful,' is an upbeat tribute to love and friendship featuring a catchy hook and an Al Green-style drum groove. The B-side, 'Fade Away', highlights Henry's falsetto in a deep, introspective ballad. Both tracks are produced by Oscar Martos using full analogue recording so they capture the warmth of 70s soul and make for an exciting start for Discos Martos.

Review: Second time around for Hudson People's most celebrated single, 1979's obscure and suitably hard to find 'Trip To Your Mind'. The track was originally released on a couple of different labels, and mixes from both 12-inches are featured on this reissue. The 'Hit House' version, which we think was mixed by the band's leader and in-house producer, is a superb dancefloor jazz-funk epic rich in disco-funk licks, a driving groove, jammed-out electric piano lines, punchy horns, occasional vocal refrains and duelling rock and jazz style guitar solos. On the flip you'll find the breezier and arguably more club-focused remix by UK jazz-funk legends (and Funk Mafia members) Chris Hill and Robbie Vincent, a version that dubs out the vocals a little, prioritises the percussion and adds some superb sax solos.

Review: When it comes to hunting the very of best library music cuts out there, De Wolfe's discography is likely the best place to start, and finish. The British music production company were the first to license such music exclusively for film and TV and thus single-handedly popularised the now DJ's favourite genre. Here on this reissue, Aussie producer, musician and double bassist Johnny Hawksworth (one of two famous library musician "hawks", only once removed from the perhaps more eminent Alan Hawkshaw), prizes open both falcon's eyes and auriculars: 'Bite Hard Breaks', the star, makes for an unfathomably cool piece for the playing of seductive games. Unsurprisingly, but with this fact not known to many, this record has been much sampled by hip-hop titans, from Beyonce to Drake to Jay Z to Madlib.

Review: A rare reissue for one of the most sought-after records in Finnish jazz history: the sole studio album by electric piano wizard (and bandleader) Heikko Sarmanto's short-lived quintet. Recorded and first released by EMI Finland's jazz department in 1971, Counterbalance remains a unique and hugely enjoyable album that joins the dots between warm and largely laidback contemporary jazz, jazz-funk, more pastoral folk-jazz fusion, and more high-octane, spiritual jazz-inspired improvisations. It also boasts some genuinely life-affirming flute and guitar solos amongst the rubbery double bass, loose-limbed rhythms and Sarmanto's inspired keys-work. Helpfully, this edition also boasts an insert with extended liner notes telling the story of this inspired cult classic.

Review: Finnish fusion five-piece the Heikki Sarmanto Quintet recorded and released their sole album, Counterbalance, way back in 1971. Brought together by bandleader and Rhodes electric piano wizard Heikki Sarmanto, the band burned brightly briefly before vanishing into obscurity. Svart Records has - wisely, given its cult status - decided to reissue the album, this time on translucent green vinyl and accompanied by extensive liner notes. It remains a unique and hugely enjoyable album that joins the dots between warm and largely laidback contemporary jazz, jazz-funk, more pastoral folk-jazz fusion, and more high-octane, spiritual jazz-inspired improvisations. Review: Joe Henderson's synergistic 1973 sax record first came to Milestone Records amid the musician's long and storied fusion-crossing-into-free-jazz period. With a Warholian front cover and a punch-packing cast of talents behind him - from Larry Willis to James Blood Ulmer to Dave Holland to Jack DeJohnette - this is indeed a milestone, charging terminals of funk, blue jazz and Afrobeat, and crossing into both the spiritual and the atonal. Mid-record high-point 'Song For Sinners' almost certainly takes after Sun Ra with its trembling saxophones above a distended groove, while 'Turned Around' is a lot freer and easygoing and yet far more determined in the rhythm section.

Review: Featuring the vibraphonist in peak form while interpreting seven jazz standards with remarkable interplay, this newly reissued vinyl celebrates the album's 40th anniversary, bringing fresh attention to an overlooked gem. Hutcherson's quartetifeaturing pianist George Cables, bassist Herbie Lewis and legendary drummer Philly Joe Jonesidelivers a session filled with warmth and dynamic expression. The set kicks off with Thelonious Monk's 'I Mean You', immediately showing the group's cohesion. Hutcherson's phrasing on 'All Of You' is adventurous and his delicate touch on 'Spring Is Here' highlights his lyrical sensitivity. The brisk tempo of 'Star Eyes' adds energy, while 'If I Were A Bell' features an engaging solo introduction from Hutcherson. Cables shines on 'Summertime' and the album closes with an exhilarating take on 'Autumn Leaves'. Hutcherson's vibes function much like a lead horn, evoking the spirit of classic jazz quartets. Cables' piano work is exceptional and an intricate yet fluid accompaniment. Jones, whose drumming, delivers an impeccable performanceihis crisp, swinging touch is a masterclass. Review: Brazilian artist Hyldon's 1981 album 'Sabor De Amor' is a Latin classic that is well overdue this reissue by Jazzybelle Records. It was the fourth from the soul man, singer and instrumentalist who was, with equally celebrated peers Tim Maia and Cassiano, at the very heart of the Brazilian soul revolution of 70s. This may be his most consistent album with its more than accomplished backing by Azymuth musicians including Alexandre Malheiros on bass, drums from Ivan "Mamao" Conti and Hammond jams from Sergio Carvalho amongst others. The bass is funky, the arrangements are sophisticated and full of sun with noodling jazz melodies and Portuguese vocals all oozing summer magic. From mellow moments like the title cut to more dazzling and upbeat dancers like 'Amor Na Terra Do Berimbau' this isa joyous listen.
