Review: As a member of the legendary Flipmode Squad, Rah Digga's rap is bouncing off the walls on this cover of the Marvin Gaye classic "Sexual Healing". It takes the song to a whole new level! The remix is already causing proper dancefloor damage around the globe by all major players on the circuit.

Cramp Your Style (2:13)
Cramp Your Style (Conomark & Hong Kong edit (brew)) (3:41)
Review: All The People was a Florida-based soul act who joined vocalist Robert Moore Jr on this highly sought after '45. Moore was the master of a singing style known as 'soul scatting'. His career later took him to Miami, where in 1979 he joined a group headed by Herb Reed, one of the original Platters. He stayed with Reed until 1993. Originally released on Blue Candle back in 1972, this much sought after classic has been reissued thanks to Japan's Ultra Vybe with an edit on the flip by Conomark & Hong Kong, which retains the original's big band style of soul music in the tradition of the legendary James Brown.

Review: "Cramp Your Style" by All The People surely belongs among the canon of all time funk standards, sampled aplenty over the years, included on numerous compilations as well as being the recipient of cover versions from Breakestra and Killer Meters. Originally issued on the Blue Candle label back in 1972, a newly remastered edition of that 7" is now available for any funkateers out there without the 45 in their collections already. Red - "The Nuts" (original mix)
Homecut - "Time Difference" (feat J-Live - Marc Mac remix)
Kidkanevil - "Good Morning, What's New?" (feat Andreya Triana - Capstone re-version)
Review: Ten years deep, First Word showcase just how timeless their output has been by exploring their vaults and repurposing some of their finest classics 10" re-releases. Never press to vinyl before, each of these cuts surges at the very forefront of hip-hop, funk and world music. Each track is a highlight; "African Kings" is quintessential Afrofunk laced with warm keys and undeniable groove infection, "The Nuts" is futuristic homage to Danny Breaks, Marc Mac conjures the spirit of the Steve Miller Band on his Homecut remix and the Capstone remix of the Andreya Triana-fronted "Good Morning What's New?" is a drum-heavy jazz daydream you'll never want to awake from. Here's to another 10 years!

Roger & The Gypsies - "Pass The Hatchett"
Little Buck - "Little Boy Blue"
Lenny McDaniel & The New Era - "Something Out Of Nothing"
Pat Brown - "The Good Got To Suffer For The Bad"
Eddie Bo - "From This Day On"
Review: Blimey....not one single, not two but three 45's housed as a triple pack of essential re-issued releases from New Orleans label Seven B via the mighty Jazzman label. This package picks out possibly the rarest and best tracks from the label which traverses the genres of breakbeat funk, Northern Soul and original Rhythm n Blues flavour. One highlight for us here at Juno towers is the infectious "Something Out Of Nothing" from Lenny McDaniel & The New Era which starts off with a stompy organ and fierce brass section before a thumping bass and fat beat drums take over the proceedings. Elsewhere there's the amazing Roger & The Gypsies jam "Pass The Hatchett" which starts off with a growling bass, picked rhythm guitar before Roger drops those immortal lines.''Let Me Chop It.. Let Me Chop It'' over b-boy drums. Pure gold!

Reece Johnson - "Groove Espresso" (5:44)
Shamako - "Chicco Felino" (6:41)
Joutro Mundo - "Vem Obata" (5:34)
Review: The latest drop of 'coffee shots' from Italian imprint Caffe Cornetto is another impressive affair showcasing re-edits and reworks by a quintet of artists. Label regulars BPlan and Fab-O join forces on opener 'Miscela Segrata', a lightly beefed-up and subtly quantized tweak of a heavyweight disco-funk jam, before rising star Reece Johnson slaps down 'Groove Espresso', a percussion-rich, all-action take on what sounds like a West African Afro-disco smasher from the mid-to-late 1970s. Over on side B, Shamarko offers-up an expert rearrangement of a low-slung, flute-sporting disco workout rich in gritty, funk-fuelled low-end heaviness, while Brazilian favourite Joutro Mundo lowers the tempo on the sun-baked, synth-sporting early evening gorgeousness of languid boogie jam 'Vem Obata'.

Afro Beat

Afro Beat (3:24)
Afro Flower (3:27)
Review: The library music crate-diggers behind Italy's Four Flies label aren't quite sure when regular collaborators Braen (an alias of composer and multi-instrumentalist Alessandro Alessandroni) and Raskovich (Guillano Sorgini) recorded these two previously unreleased tracks, but it's thought to have been around the time of the 1971 sessions for a psychedelic rock 7" by The Pawnshop. A-side "Afro Beat" is something of a saucer-eyed, Modernist delight, with the duo mixing meandering organ lines and breezy Afro-funk grooves with heavy bass. "Afro Flower", on the other hand, sounds like something that would have emerged from the studio of the Graham Bond Organization during the swinging '60s, which is no bad thing in our book.

Brazilian Boys - "Super Herois" (3:09)
Rubinho E Mauro Assumpcao - "Ta Tudo Ai" (2:28)
Review: We'll never tire of the incredible Brazil45 series on Mr Bongo, which has provided an authoritative window into the rich history of 60s and 70s grooves from South America. Here's a missing joint from the series which took some time to come to fruition - a split release featuring Brazilian Boys on the A side and Rubinho E Mauro Assumpcao on the B. 'Super Herois' is an obscure slice of off-kilter, psych tinged funk from 1975 that has the kind of individual sound which could find favour with a lot of different DJs. 'Tudo Ai' has a more recognisable samba shuffle, but much like the A side there's a subtle twist in the sound which leans towards blues rock and jazz, locking down on the rhythm and creating a low-key party starter in its own unique way.

Review: Get ready for more extended breaks fun with this new edit from the popular Breaks & Beats bootleg 45 series. Unknown cut and paste masters are behind these two special editions, the first of which tackles Brother Soul's 'Cookies' and flips it into a driving funk tune with big, rousing horns and subtle funk riffs. Superstition (5:34)
Shades Of Hades (3:08)
Review: When deciding on tracks to release on '45' for the first time, the Dynamite Cuts team seems to mine a mixture of sought-after sets, familiar favourites and overlooked obscurities. This single falls int the latter category, featuring as it does two killer cuts from Funk In Hell, a 1976 album by library music collective-turned-instrumental funk outfit Button Down Brass (a band founded by trumpeter and arranger Ray Davies). A-side 'Superstition' is simply superb: a down-low cover of Stevie Wonder classic 'Superstition' that sits somewhere between down-low library funk and Blaxploitation movie soundtracks, with a dash of big band funk thrown in. Instrumental flipside 'Shades of Hades' is equally as vibrant, with elongated electric guitar notes, heady hand percussion and spacey synth sounds combining superbly with spy-funk horns and weighty bass.As played by DJ Muro from Japan

Buzz Compass - "Take Me"
Riccio - "We Have Been Waiting"
Funkyjaws - "Picnic"
Petr Serkin - "Spinning Time"
Review: Vinyl-only, 250 copies, no repress... Freedom Sessions certainly know us how to get excited. They've got the vibes to back up their air of exclusivity, too. Each of these four cuts are well-polished deep house cuts the shimmer and shake with the perfect balance of jazz, soul and disco. Native content for the Russian label comes from Buzz Compass (bubbling bass, dreamy chord swoops and a killer loop) and Petr Serkin (filtered bliss that builds and builds). Flying further afield, Italian Riccio dusts off his meanest slap bass while Belarus's Funkyjaws lays down an ultimately timeless lesson in jazz-licked filtered dynamism. Limited and lush... All boxes ticked here.

Review: This is a red hot 7" feature plenty of reggae gold that has never before been served up on this format. First up is a cover of a rocksteady classic from Alton Ellis. Roland "Nambo" Robinson is actually a trombonist but he provides the excellent vocals with driving rhythms from Mikey Lass Starr and a horn section that feature none other than Cedric Im Brooks. Review: Another mighty fine reissue here from the masters of just that in the Original Gravity label. It features distorted organ loveliness here that continues with their practice of putting out new music in the style of old soul 7"s. On this split-flip 45, two of the most eminent soul vocalists out today share a side each. St. Louis singer Raye Cole helms the A-side, with her energetic number 'You Gotta Set Me Free' stomping on forward with a shaker-clapping, horn-heavy blues swing. It's Cumulative Collective who go first with 'Suede Bear', a playful late-night cut with dancing chords and jazzy keys over soul-drenched deep house beats with a funky bass riff running right through the middle. Review: Promoting his limited vinyl series from the 7" league to the 12" premiership, Diesler's Buried Treasure brand provides its biggest beat bounty to date. Charged with a thriving sense of turbo funk and broken beat mischief, each cut screams carnival and peak time perkiness. The tight horn harmonies and percussive textures of "Smokin Jo Crow"; the slower, seductive boogie-based jam "In The Loop"; the tight, jazzed out Bugz-style stomps of "Rokko Loko"; the acid wiggles and tropical riddim of "Lullaby"... Crown Heights Affair - "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" (DJ Vas rework)
Crown Heights Affair - "Use Your Body & Soul" (DJ Vas rework)
Review: Get familiar... DJ Vas was the guiding force of French electronic act Kojak. In their time they were up there with the biggest French exports you can imagine. Now flying solo, he's still got funk oozing from every creative pore as he digs out four formative disco/funk cuts and gives them his own unique twist. Ayers undergoes major loop surgery as Vas teases and pleases us with the instantly distinctive hook of "Love Will Bring Us Back Together". BB & Q get beef in the kick department while Vas leaves their supreme synth boogie flavours almost untouched. Crown Heights Affair, meanwhile, get two Vas facelifts... "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" is stripped back to begin with, allowing the dynamic to build with more grace and impact while "Use Your Body & Soul" is given a fine filter polish and refocus on the vocal phrases that we guarantee will instantly stun any floor.

Review: The Demons Singles Club is back with more devilishly good funk here in the form of Doris Duke's version of Marlena Shaw's 'Woman Of The Ghetto.' It first appeared on her 1975 alum Woman and is a searing take with full-bodied vocals full of fire. The Fantastics! - "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose"
Speedometer feat Ria Currie - "Answer To Mother Popcorn"
Review: Freestyle serve up 2 James Brown tributes as a sampler for the recent Modern Funk compilation. It has been argued that 2007
was the year that the underground funk movement finally started to make its presence known in the mainstream. Huge selling
artists such as Mark Ronson, Kanye West and Amy Winehouse spearheaded a movement towards a more organic and authentic
sound, selling thousands of records in the process and whisking bands, who have been gigging in small sweaty clubs in the UK
for years, off on world tours. The music itself harks back to the golden years of Motown, Watts and Stax, as well as hundreds of
unknown smaller labels, but given the all important production values of the 21st century, making it perfect for the dancefloor -
hence the tag 'Modern Funk'. The a-side finds The Fantastics (previously known as Reverend Cleatus and The Soul Saviours)
getting busy with The Godfather's 'Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose', sticking pretty close to the original but slapping their unique style
all over it. Over on the flip Speedometer and Ria Currie take on 'Answer To Mother Popcorn', originally a Vicki Anderson number,
giving it a update for the dancefloor in 2008.

Review: This Japanese import on Vortex Records offers a brilliant disco-reggae version of a classic tune by Dean Fraser & Robert "Dubwise" Browne. 'Mister Magic' is a mid-paced chugger with oodles of reverb and bass so funky it will tie you in knots. The acoustic guitar melodies are warm and slide up and down the scale and big horns add flesh and fun. Review: Jaribu Afrobeat Arkestra have long been one of Japan's foremost purveyors of Fela Kuti-style goodness, though in the past they've shied away from covering the great man's works. With this must-check "45", the group has finally relented and delivered their interpretation of 'Water Get No Enemy', one of Kuti and Africa '70's best-loved tunes. Their interpretation, which was made in cahoots with DJ Ryuhei The Man, is simultaneously deliciously heavy - all low-register horns and Tony Allen style polyrhythmic drums - and surprisingly light and airy, with a sun-kissed vibe that draws the track towards Japanese spiritual jazz territory. Cro-Magnon collaborator DJ Jin delivers a flipside re-edit the emphasises all the good stuff while utilising a slightly more dancefloor-friendly arrangement.

Review: TRAMP Records' latest must-have "45" is an incendiary double-header of killer cuts. On the A-side you'll find "Candy Man", the suitably obscure sole single from Josephine Jones. It's a lolloping, lo-fi soul affair, with Jones' distinctive vocals rising above the kind of head-nodding breaks, heavy bass and clipped guitar riffs that will get hip-hop DJs hot under the collar. Turn to the flip for another chance to savour Raw Soul's "Just Walk Funky", a track recorded in their home town of Norfolk, Virginia in the early 1970s that went unissued until Put released it in 2009. It remains a tidy chunk of off-kilter instrumental funk rich in intricate guitar licks, booming bass and fizzing drums.

'Sugar' is the kind of colourful, bass guitar-sporting, synth-powered electrofunk goodness that would once have featured on legendary label Solar System - all squiggly lead lines, rubbery bass, tight machine drums and soulful lead vocals for the ever on-point Esput. The quality - and authenticity - of the trio's early '80s sound comes through loud and clear on the flipside instrumental version, which also includes added musical motifs and dub style drops. A genuine neo-boogie banger!

We Like It (Caserta Lime Ricky dub) (5:08)
Review: Boston's A-grade record digger, funk and soul boffin and master edit maker Kon is back with his Gang for this tidy 7" that also features Rick James. It is once again an edit aided by Kon's long time engineer Caserta, with slick, life affirming jazz tinged and super funky production. Soul Supreme is on keys, the knotted bass comes from Xander Vrienten and together they all serve up a real late summer jam that could be 50 years old. The dub is just as delicious on the flip, with more room for the lux and authentic production and very real musicianship to shine through

Get Up Featuring Vanessa Freeman (DJ Kawasaki 45 edit) (4:11)
Get Up (DJ Kawasaki Roy Vibestrumental mix) (3:35)
Review: Kyoto Jazz Massive's most recent album, the critically acclaimed Message From a New Dawn, was packed to the rafters with highlights, with their surprise collaboration with jazz-funk legend Roy Ayers, 'Get Up', arguably being the best of the lot. Here the track gets a deserved single release, albeit via two 45-friendly re-edits from Japanese scalpel fiend DJ Kawasaki. He subtly snips and chops the track on the A-side '45 Edit', finding room for both the various instrumental solos and vocal sections while keeping the original's focus and energy in-tact. Over on the flip he chooses to showcase Ayers' superb vibraphone solos, jettisoning the original version's vocals on an all-instrumental revision that's a genuine jazz-funk-goes-disco treat.

Let's Dance Vol 1

Lay Far - "Never Ever Edit" (4:53)
Admin - "Moon Trippin'" (6:28)
Rahaan - "Gonna Get Ya" (5:55)
Delfonic - "Let's Dance The Spank" (5:41)
Review: Funkyjaws Music launches a new edits series here with four absolute dons of the form on one vital 12". It's Lay Far that kicks off with 'Never Ever Edit' which is all horn-led excitement and upbeat disco claps and kicks before Admin's 'Moon Trippin' takes a more slow and soulful approach. When it comes to edits few are more essential than Chicago's Rahaan who kicks off the B-side with 'Gonna Get Ya', a leggy funk number infused with cosmic synth rays and warm piano chords. Delfonic shuts down with the loose percussive jumbles and jazzy vibes of 'Let's Dance The Spank'. A fine start to the series with volume two already in the works.

Review: Batov Records have proven themselves juggernauts in their ability to stick to a theme; since 2016, they've kept up their Middle-Eastern grooves themed 45's series for a spate of over 13 releases. Les Dynamites and Radio Trip serve up their latest. Hailing from Jerusalem and Israel respectively, both bring influences from dubbed-out Mediterranean bass, Yemeni folk and trip-hop to each tracks, different in style but reconciled by these influences. What's more 'Oud Two' and 'No Oud' are intended as invitations to dance, with both bands intending their respective tracks as rallying calls for Israeli belly dancers and breakdancers.

Marcia Maria - "Meu Amigo Branco"

Eddie Palmieri - "Spirit Of Love"
Paulinho Da Costa - "Love 'Til The End Of Time"
Yambu - "Sunny"
Review: From the creative, crate-digging minds of the Supafrico imprint, Supalatino digs deep into rich annals of South American disco and funk to present five previously rare-as-hen's-teeth floor fillers. Highlights include Ray Barretto's extended cover of Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise", Marcia Maria's seductive, off-beat vocal delivery on "Meu Amigo Branco" and the soul jazz fusion of "Sunny", a track that's gave the house scene a very well-known brass sample. Heavenly.

Everybody Loves The Sunshine (instrumental)
Review: Is it possible for us humanoids to tire of this Roy Ayers funk bomb? We really don't think so. Such a distinctive, dreamy riff, instantly affirmative lyrics and eternal groove, it's what we call in the record shop game as a 'classic'. This version from French Afrofunker Medline pays respect well; different enough to bother with (faster, interesting synth sounds, a super-tight groove) but authentic enough to sizzle your synapses with shudders.

Midnight Express - "Danger Zone" (3:47)
Robbie M - "I Need Good Lovin'" (5:15)
Review: DC-based label Peoples Potential Unlimited aka PPU is a real favourite for us here. It's got a signature lo-fi funk sound and deals in perfectly ageless sounds with a big heart. Robbie M has been a frequent name in the label's catalogue and is back on this new 7" next to Midnight Express. The latter kicks off with big cosmic disco synths, hip-swinging claps and great vocals. Robbie M's brilliantly boogie-fried 80s electro-funk then appears in the form of 'I Need Good Lovin'' with its seductive vocals and catchy broken beats.

Take It Personally (feat Desmond Foster) (1:30)
Take It Personally (Exclusive unreleased instrumental) (1:30)
Review: Mukatsuku's latest must-have release offers another opportunity to own early Freddie Cruger AKA Red Astaire favourite "Take It Personally". The wonderfully dusty, smoky and life-affirming hip-hop-soul cut first appeared as a Swedish only CD single in 2001, before later being included on the Stockholm stalwart's 2006 debut album "Soul Search". This time round, the inspired original - all head-nodding beats, sumptuous strings and sugary-sweet vocals from guest Desmond Foster - comes accompanied by a previously unreleased instrumental take. This vocal-free version is superb, offering listeners a chance to wallow in the quality of the Swedish veteran's bumpin' beats and intoxicating, head-in-the-clouds production. In the record box of Danny Krivit,DJ Spinna, Kid Koala and more! Only 300 hand-numbered copies and strictly no repress. Juno copies come exclusively in additional hand stamped kraft paper inner sleeve and branded card outer sleeve. Don't sleep !

Cliff Nobles - "My Love Is Getting Stronger" (2:47)
Russell Evans & The Nite Hawks - "The Bold" (2:21)
Review: Cliff Nobles's northern soul gem 'My Love Is Getting Stronger' is a vital part of the cannon that gets a welcome reissue here by the good folk at Matasuna. It is an empowering tune with some hugely impressive drumming, plenty of big horns and a big bongo bridge that builds the vibe. ON the flip side is an equally essential but rather different tune, 'The Bold.' It is a funky, jazz tinged workout with cosmic chords and more exceptional stick work. Both tracks were initially released in 1966 on Atlantic Records but have since become hard to source. Do not sleep.

Review: Born To Shine fly down under for the first time for a dangerous pair of collaborations from Melbourne's Amin Payne. Teaming up with fellow Aussie Roughsoul, "Bad Juice" lives up to its name as it quenches our thirsts with refreshing looseness and meaty, deviant boogie dynamics. German troupe First Touch tag-up on the B as "Wait A Minute" offers a dreamier departure with layers of keys and vocodered soul weaving in and out of the lolloping groove. Majestic.

For the 007 release we're treated to a wild jazz excursion as Pleasure and Rusty Bryant get the treatment. Review: A unique smashing of worlds between funk and hip-hop, this fantastic, vibrant, red-and-black splatter 7" brings together a host of collaborating greats, all of whom have contributed in major ways to both sounds over the years. With Dan Ubick on guitar (Breakestra, Big Daddy Kane), Julius Augustus on bass (The Sandollars), Dan Hastie on organ (Orgone, Alicia Keys), Steve McCormick on dobro and Professor Shorthair on the cuts and edits - and mastered by Dave Cooley (J Dilla, Madlib) - this is a mournful yet masterful example of live-recorded battle breaks.

Review: Cover versions don't come much sweeter (or respectful) than this epic two part homage to the Babe Ruth classic. Part 1 sees the Japanese funk band laying down the foundations, paying deference to the original with their own upbeat twist. Part 2, however, is where they really let loose with each instrumentalist taking lead on the solos. With Hammond-hammering and screaming horns galore, QASB have delivered something very special here.
