Mama Soul
Cat: BGPS 066. Rel: 27 Jan 22
Harold Alexander - "Mama Soul" (3:03)
Pretty Purdie - "Heavy Soul Slinger" (4:16)
Review: Bernard "Pretty" Purdie and his Playboys were an iconic funk group of the late 70s who had big hits with the likes of Gil Scott Heron on his seminal 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' single. A year later on the same label, Flying Dutchman, they served up the 'Heavy Soul Slinger' single which gets reissued here. It's driven by big drum breaks and funky hits, with plenty of lush chords and rolling basslines all taking you on a high class and sophisticated trip. On the a-side is Harold Alexander 's 'Mama Soul' from the same era, but with a much more experimental sound rooted in wordless ad libs and frantic flutes.

Paul Older - "Turkish Lights" (6:02)
C Da Afro - "Nothing But The Funk" (6:33)
Juan Soto - "All Is Full Of Love" (5:10)
Review: Super Spicy's Super Spicy Recipe series is back with a sixth mouthwatering offering and once again it's a super hot outing of party-ready house and disco sounds. First up is the irresistibly colourful disco charm of Birdee with the freewheeling 'Underground' and its groove-infused piano. Label boss Monsieur Van Pratt then adds his own spin to a rare groove classic with a lung-busting soul vocal and Pato Watson is in edit mode as he tweaks 'Ella Fue' to perfection. Italian don Paul Older brings some funky jazz fusion sounds to his steamy 'Turkish Lights, C. Da Afro keeps it a party with his 'Nothing But The Funk' and Mexican Juan Soto slips into a more deep and loved-up funk-house vibe on 'All Is Full Of Love'.

C'est Quoi C'est Quoi (Gimme riddim dub) (5:01)
Review: Bosq's Bacalao label is back with more of that supreme feel-good gear to bring about sunnier days. The artist frequently spotted on Ubiquity knows exactly how to craft a sumptuous groove with a particular focus on Latin music and Afrobeat, and he's doing that with flair and precision on 'C'est Quoi C'est Quoi'. The track features French poet Pat Kalla on vocals, and it's leaps off the 7" primed for festival deployment. If you want to get the crowd locked in and heads down, the 'Gimme Riddim Dub' on the flip may be more your bag, but either way the musicality springs forth from this perfect nugget of globally-minded funk.

Review: The Super Spicy Recipe series comes with its 4th installment with a super strong compilation! A1 belongs to the always trustable Igor Gonya, who opens the record with a track that comes directly from the mid 70's, splashed with some new grooves. A2 is on charge of the amazing italian producer Musta, who delivers an astonishing jazzy track to heat the dance floor. Pisma Deer takes control on A3 with a loopy groove with heavier drums to keep the dance on! On the flip, B1 is entrusted to Disco 86 who delivers a sexy smasher track that has been tested in the dancefloor with sexy results. Finally, B2 welcomes Jet Boot Jack, with an awesome banger worth to close this amazing compilation.

Review: Names You Can Trust cull the three most popular tracks from their Spring digital only remixes compilation and spread them across one lovely 12". Tru Thoughts stalwart TM Juke lays on the funk breaks thick via his remix of Greenwood Rhythm Coalition, whilst Bastard Jazz boss DJ DRM drops a bongo heavy laidback house refix of Midnight Lab Band’s "Twilight Reprise". Review: Possibly arriving from the same source as those Originals seven inches comes the Rare imprint with a Ronseal approach to their releases i.e. this 45 slaps two highly sought after diggers delights on either side. The horn and string heavy funk disco of IMP Express's "8-1" makes a reappearance after Kon & Amir used it on a BBE comp a while back and it's joined by the equally jaunty "Keep On Moving" from Phillip & Llyod. Rita Lee & Tutti Frutti - "Agora E Moda" (4:18)
Pete Dunaway - "Supermarket" (4:55)
Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45's series brings us two Brazilian classics: Rita Lee & Tutti Frutti's 'Agora E Moda' and Pete Dunaway's 'Supermarket'. 'Agora E Moda' from Lee's 1978 album Babilonia is a psychedelic disco-boogie groove highlighted by squelching guitar licks, funk drums, and cosmic vocals. Rita Lee, the former lead singer of Os Mutantes and a key figure in the Tropicalia movement, left a lasting legacy upon her passing in 2023. On the flip side, Dunaway's 'Supermarket' is a rare groove/AOR gem with a standout bassline, swaggering guitar, and lush strings, showcasing his talent as a composer and multi-instrumentalist. This release celebrates the enduring influence of Brazilian music.

Rita Lee & Tutti Frutti - "Agora E Moda" (4:17)
Pete Dunaway - "Supermarket" (4:52)
Review: Time for some Brazilian psychedelic boogie straight from 78. Erstwhile lead singer in Os Mutantes, with a personality thrice as big as the soaking wet bassline on "Agora E Moda", Rita Lee is no stranger to her motherland - even now. Flip for a huge soul injection courtesy of Pete Dunaway. Sounding English in every direction (from his name to his lyrics to the stunning, string-coated arrangement) he's actually Sao Paulo born and is a renowned multi-instrumentalist. Check this and you can tell in an instant. Stunning.

Barely Breaking Even (Louie Vega Boogie mix - radio edit) (3:33)
Barely Breaking Even (Louie Vega Boogie instrumental mix - radio edit) (3:31)
Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: an all-star re-recording of Universal Robot Band's boogie classic "Barely Breaking Even" that brings together Masters At Work man Louie Vega, original vocalist and arranger Leroy Burgess, iconic disco producer Patrick Adams and an impressive backing band of hired musicians including Michael Kelley (better known in electronic music circles as Metro Area collaborator Kelley Polar). While there are plenty of audible nods towards the early '80s original - extensive use of cowbells, that oh-so familiar synth sound - the re-recording is altogether warmer, fuller and a more contemporary sounding affair rich in sweeping orchestration and tactile synth bass. Both the edited vocal and instrumental versions are superb.

The Meters - "Same Old Thing"
Pete Rock & CL Smooth - "Good Life"
Review: Originals label pay homage to the fine art of sampling once again with this ace 7" dedicated to The Meters. Responsible for some of the best breakbeat contributions of all time, here we find their 1970 classic "Same Old Thing" (taken from their Struttin album) in all its bass-thumping, organ-slapping glory. Meanwhile on the B we hear just how it inspired Pete Rock and CL Smooth with the still-fresh "Good Life". An unmissable celebration of classic funk and hip-hop where the Originals imprint continues to impress.

Igor Gonya & Crack D - "Two-Piece Orchestra" (6:34)
The Funk District - "Watcha Gonna Do" (6:11)
Paul Older - "Love" (6:35)
Review: Super Spicy is a new Mexican label committing some serious heaters to wax. Helmed by Monsieur Von Pratt, the label boss himself sets the tone with opening track 'Forever Funk' on this various artists 12". The vibe is clear from the outset - classic disco-flavoured house music with oodles of soul and good vibes by the bucketload. Igor Gonya & Crack D get busy with the filters on 'Two-Piece Orchestra' and The Funk District take a more delicate edit approach to stomping peak-time burner 'Watcha Gonna Do'. Paul Older's 'Love' is the perfect swooning closer to the record, romantic and triumphant in equal measure for a proper hand-waving release of energy.

Peter Yamson - "Everybody Dance" (3:51)
Tala Am - "Get Up Tchamassi" (3:11)
Review: Mukatsuku's long running "Afro Funk & Disco Gems" series has always been a reliable source of obscure, high-quality dancefloor material from the African continent. This tenth edition is another must-have - on the A-side you'll find the synth-laden, boogie-era sunshine of "Everybody Dance", one of the undisputed highlights of Peter Yamson's in-demand (and notably hard to find) "Son Of Africa" LP. With wonderful vocals, glistening guitars, lolloping drum machine beats and some stellar synth work, the track ticks all the right boxes. Over on the flip there's a chance to own Cameroon legend Tala Andre Marie's 1981 classic "Get Up Tchamassi", whose snaking sax lines, elastic slap bass and dreamy chords are nothing less than sensational. As played by The Allergies, DJ Koco, Joe Claussell,Smoov,Kalita, Faze Action,DJ Moar etc

This Way (4:53)
Breathe & Stop (Abstract Blend) (4:00)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: New York producer P-Sol has hit on a super effective formula for starting the party, stitching together a selection of familiar samples and hooks, adding some beautifully dusty breaks and adding a final sheen of shiny production skills. Both sides of this 7" have a touch of raw 'two turntables' action about them, while remaining impeccably constructed and tight, with the A-side 'This Way' proving to be the slightly speedier and slightly more funk/r&b-flavoured, while 'Breathe & Stop (Abstract Blend)' is the one for the pure hip-hop heads. Both, however, are dynamite in the box, needless to say.

Sad Party (4:02)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: New York's P-Sol steps up to the PS7 label in soulful form. 'Brooklyn Interlude' opens up with some brilliantly buttery vocal harmonies over a lazy and seductive deep funk and soul groove. The drums have hints of hip-hop and neo-soul and are sure to warm through any Autumnal dancefloor in style. Flip it over and you will find the distinctly festive-sounding 'Sad Party' which has some warming drum breaks and lush feels, swirling wordless vocals and glowing melodies that all give off a rather Christmassy feel. A great outing from P-Sol, then.

Heartaches & Pain (2:19)
MACK (2:32)
Review: Suncut's latest release offers up an affordably priced reissue of obscure US outfit, Pages' "Heartaches & Pain", a sought-after seven-inch single from 1979. Given that copies of the Sunstruck Records original regularly change hands for several hundred pounds a time, you could argue that they've done soul and funk DJs a massive service. The title track, which was apparently recorded in 1971 by producer Travis Biggs and the obscure Pages, is something of a breezy soul treat - a two-and-a-half minute slab of sweetness rich in attractive vocals, rising horns and a bustling bottom-end groove. Arguably even more impressive is Blaxploitation funk style flipside "Mack", where flanged guitars, punchy horns, sample-ready drum breaks and down-low vocals combine with devastating effect.

You're So Fine (2:57)
Sweetest Thing On This Side Of Heaven (3:45)
Review: This excellent 7" single from Athens Of The North boasts more desirable deep funk business. This time dusty-fingered digger Euan Fryer has secured the rights to a sought-after seven from Papa Bear & His Cubs, a long-serving combo whose sole "45" has long been a sought-after item amongst serious soul and funk heads. "You're So Fine" may sound like it was recorded in a cement mixer on a cheap portable tape recorder, but musically it's soul bliss - a wonderfully languid, loved-up song blessed with a superb lead vocal and languid instrumentation. "Sweetest Thing On This Side Of Heaven" is, if anything, even more dewy-eyed - a seductive slow jam whose saccharine lyrics are delivered with heartfelt passion.

Punkin' Funkin' (4:38)
Review: It would be fair to say that Paris Holley is not one of the best-known purveyors of 1980s funk and soul, though the handful of releases he put out in the decade tend to be cherished by serious diggers and DJs. 1984 jam "I Choose You", which is here reissued for the first time since the '80s, is undoubtedly one of his standout moments. Hazy, super-sweet and laidback, the cut sees Holley adding his soulful, high octave tones to a blissful backing track rich in fluid piano lines, sun-kissed guitars and mazy synth lines. Arguably even better is synth-funk B-side "Punkin' Funkin", a fizzing workout that sounds like a more soulful, talkbox-free take on Zapp man Roger Troutman's trademark sound.

Summer Madness (4:01)
Review: Sometimes known as Inokasira Rangers, Park Rangers are a Japanese band who have spent much of the last decade releasing inspired but unlikely instrumental reggae covers of massive rock, pop and disco hits. This 7" single boasts two of their most popular covers, starting with a ridiculously cheery and almost hilariously cheeky version of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Built around a 1960s style rocksteady riddim, it's instantly recognisable thanks to the band's choice to track the tune of Cobain's lead vocal (which naturally isn't present) with a Hammond organ solo. On the flip you'll find a deep reggae-disco cover of Kool & The Gang classic 'Summer Madness'; it's good, but nowhere near as fine as the surprising A-side.

It has been remixed by the legendary Tom Moulton from the original multi-track tapes, and in the words of the label themselves "this is another tough forty five." Arctic sure has some quality recordings to unearth and the tastemakers at Brewerytown Beats have made it their mission to present these records to the public once and for all. Review: The Acid Jazz label opens it archives to turn out this magnificent slice of northern soul from the legend that is Dean Parrish, a man who sold over a million records and worked with the likes of Jimi Hendrix. It's 10 years old but still bangs and is maybe one of the best records of his career. The psychedelic 'It's Time - Purple Mountain Majesty' is a hard hitting tune with layers of percussion, amour nines, bendy guitar riffs and soaring vocals that have female backings for extra richness. The version on the flip is more tense, steamy and rousing.

Review: Patchouli Brothers and GMGN combine their forces on this double a-side 45 which packs some serious disco heat. Patchouli Brothers go first with the searing and full flavour 'Burnin'' which is a cacophonous brew of bristling percussion and jangling rhythms that will fit right into one of the sets of someone like DJ Harvey. GMGN then takes care of the flip with the much less noisy and intense sounds of 'A Little Bit' which rides a rickety groove and is embellished with some nifty horn arrangements and lung-busting vocals plus some deft synth flourishes.

Elusively cryptic and seemingly not entirely willing to divulge their membership, we do know that North Carolina native Taylor Williams and Chicago journeyman Wyatt Waddell are nonetheless involved: their conjoined hands craft heartfelt ambles through smoothly arranged backbeats and ride-tsking R&B phrases, evoking farewell-bidding moods and last-ditch begs for togetherness.
